Every time I hear Stevie Marriott sing, it breaks my heart he died so young and in such tragic circumstances. Quite simply, the greatest rock and soul voice I've ever heard in nearly 60 years. God rest his dear soul. They must be making some sweet music in heaven right now.
Saw him with Humble Pie in 1971. He was among the most charismatic performers I ever saw. You couldn't take your eyes off of him. And the best pure rock voice I ever heard.
He is a Brit, with a British accent. He's a great talent. Been around since the mid 1960s. One of the greatest voices ever. We miss you Steve. How about "The Blackberries" singing back up.
Steve was a Great guitar player singer, Humble Pie Live, unbelievable. Yes, the Ladies were there. Wailing sent chills down one's spine. 1972 LA colosseum.
Steve Marriott was the best rock singer of all time as far as I'm concerned. 30 days in the hole is a good one, I don't need no doctor also. There's a video of Beth Hart doing I don't need on Doctor where I swear shes channeling Steve Marriott.
Yes, a huge contributor to their sound/feel/everything - also, the similarities in Frampton's/Marriott's voices helped create the band's ott chemical reaction
Frampton was co-founder., and yes, so damn sad. Just read an article, he is with his guitar he wrote Baby I love..constantly, even having it in bed because he knows playing will be over soon....damn, damn, shame.
Thanks a lot for posting this song. Steve Marriott, The "small Giant" of rock and soul music. And thanks for demonstrating that music transcends beyond generations, cultures, races or religions.
Thank you very much Modern Renaissance Man for posting this. I am 60 and live in the UK. Remember seeing this on television when it was first broadcasted in 1973. Love the Blackberries in it as well. I bought Black Coffee and had it as a single record on vinyl. Earlier today I posted Black Coffee on my facebook page to mark the birthday of the late Steve Marriott.

Venetta Fields is the middle backing vocalist who is a very famous session vocalist .Last time I saw she was living in Australia and backed a guy called John Farnham on his big hits
John Farnham who is basically the second guy known and Little River Band with the big hits from 1980 on Glenn shorrock and gram gold were the two big guys that got the big Little River Band power heads up through lonesome Loser however John Farnham has been with the Little River Band for almost four years now keeping it alive in the legacy
There is another fantastic singer fromEngland, Steve Winwood. He was in Traffic and Blind Faith and solo. In fact, he was touring the US in September this year. John Barleycorn is an old English folk reinterpreted it’s great. Steve Winwood has been going since the mid 60’s.

Steve Marriott was a fantastic blue-eyed rock/soul master. RIP, Sir. Humble Pie had some great music, even with Peter Frampton who was not in this video. Early Rod Stewart with The Faces had a similar vibe and is well worth checking out. Try Humble Pie - I Don't Need No Doctor and The Faces - Stay With Me... or I'm Losing You at BBC Live.
This is the kind of music that brings different people together. Whenever there's a police beat-down and tempers start to get dangerous, they should just get a kick-ass "mixed" band like this to play all day in the public square and remind everybody we're all in the same boat.
Modern Renaissance Man , This guy first hit the stage at 13 years old (1960) playing the Artful Dodger in the West End London production of the musical "Oliver'". Mid to late 60's he fronted an extremely successful (top ten) band called The Small Faces. He left the band to join Peter Frampton and Humble Pie was formed. This clip in the video was just after Frampton left. I first got to see Steve in the mid 80's when, a little disillusioned with the business. he was back doing HIS thing HIS way, fronting a trio called Packet Of Three. Easily one the best acts I've ever seen and I've seen easily over a 1,000+ bands in my 50+ years going to gigs . It's worth checking out 'Steve Marriott' on Wikipedia to see where his influences are and 'Packet Of Three' here on UA-cam to hear his still very soulful vocal and guitar work. A very sad day for me when I heard the news in '91. Another British treasure gone but through his amazing talent, he's still with us through his music.
This is an Ike & Tina Turner song, written by Tina. The middle background singer is Venetta Fields, she was an Ikette, a background vocalist for Ike & Tina Turner.
Chris Newton That’s a great one! Live at the Fillmore was one of my favorite albums from that era! U can really hear how Robert Plant was influenced by Steve
Stevie was one of a kind, for sure. Never disrespected, by anyone. Accepted, by all. And, why the hell not. We're all in this together. Music always brings people together. Why can't everything else, do the same. Rock forth.

Steve Marriott had an incredible voice. He started out with The Small Faces in the 60:s. He nearly got to be the singer of Led Zeppelin. But his manager stopped it. Humble Pie has some really good music in their catalog. My recommendation for the next song to react to from them is "Stone Cold Fever"
I saw Humble Pie around 1975 and met Steve Marriot. He was a great guy. Also, the guy at the end was "Whispering" Bob Harris who hosted this show called "The Old Grey Whistle Test" whom I have also met.
Loved humble pie. This is mike’s mother doing the comments. I’m 79 loved the mills brothers please do caravan it was from a movie& cab driver. One brother played guitar but they did musical instruments with their voices also. Love them so much
Man I love that intense soulful voice of Steve Marriott's and he could jam on that guitar at the very same time. Listened to his music since the early 70s as a young teenager and still listening here in my early 60s. Love it! 😎👍
This song in my jam. You cracked me up talking about there being some half and half! I think I started listening to Humble Pie because of Almost Famous.
Man,..... I am so glad you played this song. The comments about 30 days in the hole are right on. The song is on the Smokin Album, which I'm playing right now.
Steve Marriott was also in a group called the Small Faces before this group. They had some good songs, too. Itchycoo Park, Sunday Afternoon and Tin Soldier are three examples.
Kinda sad bit of info about the singer Steve Marriott. He went out one night with his wife and another couple. They had all had a lot to drink, so Steve's friends said stay at ours rather than getting a cab. But at around 1.30 in the morning, Steve woke up and without waking his wife, or telling anybody, he called a cab and went home alone. He went to bed and fell asleep with a cigarette burning. The house was burnt down and Steve was found hiding in a cupboard dead. He had a brilliant voice. If you listen to him in his other band The Small Faces Itchycoo Park, it's a classic.
His death was a direct consequence of his behaviour, by that time he was deep into alcohol and other stuff, sad cause he was a great musician and one of the finest voices to come from uk.
This song was written by Ike and Tina if my memory is correct; and these backup singers, named The Blackberries, also performed as Ikettes from time to time. The girl on the right, Clydie King, worked extensively with Bob Dylan and just passed away less than one year ago.
One of my most enduring early '70s faves; glad to see Humble Pie transcending generations - for me, for one thing, their tone never grows old - still a potent combo of British blues, hard rock & lyricism. Hope you're ready to hear HP's take on I'm Ready - it smokes!
... good man MODERNRENAISSANCEMAN is really digging himself into this song recorded back in 1973 by HUMBLE PIE .. he knows and loves good music when he hears it no matter who does it ..
You pretty much reacted the same exact way as I did when I heard this, many moons ago. This live version is stellar. Your reactions are f'n priceless. Great to connect. Thanks for bringing happiness into a nutty world.
Steve Marriott was a huge fan of black American music and had a huge collection of discs from the states when he was 14. He came from the same area of East London that I grew up in. A hugely talented guy. Probably the best white soul voice to come out of the UK, not just my opinion but some of the top frontmen of the era.
The Middle backing singer is the very famous Venetta Fields who is a very famous session singer who has sang vocals for lots of greats.Steve Marriott the vocalist was in the Small Faces who wrote the song TIn Soldier .If you see this clip live in the studio Steve has PP Arnold another famous singer lending her vocals as well (great stuff)
All I had to see was "Black Coffee" and your face on the thumbnail reacting and I already knew I'd like it. Then I saw the basses and guitar in the back and I KNEW I'd like it. SUBSCRIBED, my friend.
I saw Steve Mariott at the Royal Standard pub in East London about 30 yrs ago. I was leaning on a pillar about 6 feet from him and it blew me away. I'd just gone out for a drink with my mates down the pub and saw they had a band setting up, I had no idea what was about to happen.
These ladies and more soul sisters were in high demand back in these days to ROCK IT on the background vocals!!!! Just a little fact for ya Clydie King the lady to the far right sang back ground vocals along with Merie Clayton who is not in this video! Sang on Lynyrd Skynyrds Sweet Home Alabama!!!!! Rest in peace Steve Marriot
And in the middle of the girl singers, one of the best back up singers of all time - Vanetta Fields. So proud to tell people that she has called the Great Southern Land her home since the early eighties. So, as people of my generation would say - "She's a good sort!"

Always loved Steve Marriot s vocals. With the Small Faces too. He sang like Sam Cook. So did Rod Stewart especially when he was in the Faces which worked out cause he replaced Steve Marriot and Ronnie Wood joined and they became the Faces.
His most famous song is called, itchy coo Park and it was one of the most popular songs of the 1960s. It was great! before he started the Group Humble Pie, his band was called Small Faces. Him and his band members were from England. If you get a chance listen to Itchy Coo Park.
Steve Marriott stood 5 foot nothing and had a voice of a giant. The album HUMBLE PIE PERFORMANCE ROCKIN THE FILMORE the song I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR be prepared to be blown away. btw that's Peter Frampton playing guitar on I don't need no doctor. Whos Peter Frampton? Just some guy that filled stadiums when he played that's all.
Love this video/song and the way he and the "blackberries" (girl back-up singers) played off of (and flirted with) each other. Such great fun! OH -- and you should check out their "30 Days in the Hole" -- One of the greatest bangers of the past half-century!
STEVE PERRY,PAUL ROGERS,LOU GRAMM,ROBERT PLANT AND STEVE MARRIOTT ARE IN MY TOP FIVE NO MATTER WHAT!! STEVE MARRIOTT WAS RAW,SOULFUL AND ORGANIC. A TRUE AND RARE TALENT.
Yes awesome voice and band! Saw them steal the show in Wichita KS from Grand Funk in 1972! Power was lost during a song during their set. No problem Steve went on a 5 minute improv with no mike and absolutely got the crowd dancing and singing! 3rd song into Grand Funk set people started yelling We want Humble Pie repeatedly! Short set for GFR
My God that Stevie Marriott (RIP) could really give it some welly. His soul voice is way off the chart and he's very sadly missed by all those of us who appreciate great rock & soul music, and he was amongst the very best. God rest him. 💔 🙋♂
"Hmble Pie" was founded by the lead singer, "Steve Marriott, who had been a founding member of "Small Faces". There's an excellent video history on youtube about "Small Faces" that will fill you in.
"You see my skin is WHITE But my soul is BLACK!" -Steve just summarized the essence of Rock 'n' Roll in a nutshell! The original genre of music that brought the differet races together like no other had before. Long live Rock 'n' Roll. Black, white it's all right! ✌🏽+♥️+🎸
The 70s is where it was at for music!!!! but I will tell you there is a few ladies making that blues sound happen today, give Danielle Nicole a listen and she is a left handed blues bassist to boot, check out her doing "Goin' Down" and for sure the group Alabama Shakes ''Hold On'' Brittany Howard the singer is awesome!!!
Steve Marriott's voice is the BEST I have ever heard for rock and roll. I LOVE it. We lost him way too soon. Check out an earlier band he was in called Small Faces and a song called "Tin Soldier".
Steve Marriot. Best lead singer ever. He came from the Small Faces. Later the Faces of Rod Stewart fame. Peter Frampton was in the band too. Most Humble pie albums are two songs. Side A and side B. 25 minute or 30 minute songs. They were killer live as you can tell.
Every time I hear Stevie Marriott sing, it breaks my heart he died so young and in such tragic circumstances. Quite simply, the greatest rock and soul voice I've ever heard in nearly 60 years. God rest his dear soul. They must be making some sweet music in heaven right now.

Tina Turner wrote this song. She and Ike recorded it on their “Feel Good” album in 1972. Humble Pie’s cover of the song came out in 1973.

Of Course, MRM, he sounds like Tina Turner! She and Ike Turner wrote the song and sang it first! He copied her!

Old guy here, another great voice from the 70's is a band called Free, "Alright now", "Fire and water" and others.. Helluva vocalist..
Greatest reaction ever.
I saw them in concert back in 1972. Alice Cooper and Blue Oyster Cult played too! Quite the concert!
STEVE PERRY,PAUL ROGERS,LOU GRAMM,ROBERT PLANT AND STEVE MARRIOTT ARE IN MY TOP FIVE NO MATTER WHAT!! STEVE MARRIOTT WAS RAW,SOULFUL AND ORGANIC. A TRUE AND RARE TALENT.
You missed Joe Cocker, but you got a lot of great ones. I would add Chris Robinson as a recent entry--Black Crowes.
Oh Shoot, and John Fogerty in Creedence Clearwater Revival.
@@gregcable3250 GOOD POINT..
JOE COCKER AND JOHN FOGERTY ARE BOTH ROCK ICONS!!
I love your all your reactions, you have done so much music I already love & new stuff I'm just discovering like this!
One of the coolest voices in Rock' n roll, RIP Steve Marriot
His first band was called the Small Faces. So called because all members were 5'7" or shorter! They would be well worth checking out too.
1:58 coincidentally it was originally by tina turner.
This song was originally released by Sarah Vaughan in 1949. There are over 100 covers of her original. Excellent song
Before humble pie Steve Marriott was in the band small faces you listened to a song from that band called itchycoo park. The man is a legend.
Had a lot of soul and Blues I loved it
One of his biggest hits was part The Small Faces the track was “Ichycoo Park”
My God that Stevie Marriott (RIP) could really give it some welly. His soul voice is way off the chart and he's very sadly missed by all those of us who appreciate great rock & soul music, and he was amongst the very best. God rest him. 💔 🙋♂
"Hmble Pie" was founded by the lead singer, "Steve Marriott, who had been a founding member of "Small Faces".
There's an excellent video history on youtube about "Small Faces" that will fill you in.
"You see my skin is WHITE
But my soul is BLACK!"
-Steve just summarized the essence of Rock 'n' Roll in a nutshell!
Alabama Shakes and/or St. Paul and the Broken Bones
Steve Marriott's voice is the BEST I have ever heard for rock and roll. I LOVE it. We lost him way too soon. Check out an earlier band he was in called Small Faces and a song called "Tin Soldier".
A great blues rock band from back in the day.
Humble Pie...Don't Need No Doctor! Give it a Try!
FINALLY I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST IS MENTIONED
