Grand Funk is one of the most underrated bands I can think of, and Mark Farner one of the most underrated frontmen. NOBODY could own a crowd live quite like them.
And a underrated guitar player, they have always been my favorite band since I first heard them in early 70's. My parents got so tied of hearing i'm your captain. Dam did he get the bad end of stick, but glad someone is starting to recognizing him. Amazing, Amem

So in sighning with Terry Knight the 3 (4) of them formed " THE PAC" 1968 to early 1969..From a rail road box car they seen wile waiting on a train. They seen GRAND TRUNK on that box car.. Boom GFR Came to Terry's or Don or Marks mind..free from a bad record lable and a contrat with holding...The went a sighned with CAPITOL RECORDS. the rest just blossomed!! UNTILL..The IRS had Audited Terry Knights booking earnings..The bands contract was illeagle and seriously short changed Mark Don &Mel..but leaving the TAX onus on all 3 band members. Terry corrupted the contract and RIPPED THE OFF MILLIONS. Finely after firing TERRY ( and he served jail time ...presumably) Don found a new manager ( HIMSELF) ..Lasted for 3 more years..1973-76. Don called it quits..and shut down the band..FIRED MARK FARNER..Mel went his own way..Don got with Bob Seager.. Mark was starting a family...They all still had the tax burden . 10 to pay off...other factors only every very briefly mentioned, played a rool too.
When I heard about the break up I thought how could the other guys do that to Farner. If they did it for no other reason than greed everybody knows who then deserves the lions share. I have no idea why so I will say no more -- L.A.Forum July 20 1970 GFR the warm up band that completely suprised me. They did steal the show and I still dont believe how good it was.
Met and played with Mark Farner ar Rock Camp. One of the most sincere, genuine people I have ever met. Spectacular, talented musician. When I asked how how he got so good, he responded, “God-given and practice...slept with guitar in my hands.” When prodded about GFR, he would not say bad thing about other members. He is too classy. Many do not know Mark’s son was paralyzed in a tragic accident. His spirit and faith carries him. God Bless Mark Farner. He made such an impression upon me. Thanks for reminded us how important he is in rock history.
There really are no words for how exceptional this band was. Mark Farner is a once in a lifetime talent. So underrated is this band! Everyone should know these guys.

John Easler John this was one of my favorite bands of all times period,,,living in Ohio and being a drummer playing their music was a treat,,at 64 now at karaoke I sing Mean Mistreater it's probably one of my best! I feel young when I hear them, music was over the top then,,🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🍻👍👍

MARK was GRAND FUNK, Wrote 90% of the music and no longer allowed to use the name GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in his concerts...Screwed over by the other two! ....I have a TON of photos from the mid 80s till today....He sings as good as ever, guitar licks still on the money!
It's so cool to hear your love and respect for Mark, I agree with you 100% that Mark was GFR, you knowing the man rather than just the musician is awesome. Continue working for and keeping Mark safe, after all the hurt he's endured, his love of life and patriotism he's a role model that 99% of the selfish children in the music world should model themselves after. You can tell him that the Troops, of which I was one in the mid 70's, absolutely loved GFR. The band was on every barracks party tape created, ALL their work. Even today as we have reunions those of us from the mid 70s still pull the music out. Thanks to all of them, especially Mark, for keeping us entertained when we were young and a long way from home. 😘💕
Mark said Heartbreaker was the first song he ever wrote when he was about 14 years old. I was at the Shea Stadium concert in 1971 when Humble Pie opened for them. Mark said he flew overhead in a helicopter while Humble Pie was on and said the entire stadium was bouncing. Two first rate bands at one fantastic concert; it is all the proof you need to see why it was a great time to be a teenager in the early 1970s.
I saw them on that tour in 71 at the Forum in LA, a band I hadn't heard of call Black Sabbath opened for them. Needless to sat it was an epic night & one I will never forget.
Dave Wray I was there! Wyndorf and I already had the first two Queen albums memorized. Queen kicked ass but Mott were pure magic. Uris theatre - the entire week!!

@@zeppelinfan9360 I think currently the most glaring omissions to the R&R HOF are Jethro Tull and Rory Gallagher. The HOF has become somewhat of a joke at this point. They inducted Alice Cooper and Deep Purple only in the past few years...they should have been in many years ago. Also, they're electing rappers now. Ridiculous. After being inducted two or three years ago, Steve Miller slammed the HOF for making the inductees pay for their own expenses. When the Sex Pistols were elected, they didn't show up, and called the HOF "piss in wine". Screw Jann Wenner and the directors of the HOF.

Thanks for showcasing GFR and especially the incredibly talented Mark Farner. As you so rightly pointed out, Farner's vocals are superb. He is easily one of the greatest frontmen ever. Great Guitarist - Great Singer - Great Song Writer - Great Physique - Great Hair. Grand Funk were one of the few American bands from that early to mid 70's era that could compete with the massive onslaught of British bands that dominated the scene. The live recording of 'The Rail Road' is one of my all time favourite epic power rock ballads. That Grand Funk is not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is a mind numbing travesty.

Steven Tyler of Aerosmith said it: the rest of the band is usually insanely jealous of the frontman because he gets all the media attention and the best groupies! This has been shown to be very true, whether it's GFR or Chicago when they dumped Peter Cetera or Fleetwood Mac when they dumped Lindsey Buckingham. Jealousy is a horrible sin and wrecks many millions of insecure dopes. Sadly, the fans suffer when people can't be mature.
I am 72 years old and when I "grew up" I was basically a Motown/ soul- blues person, and back then, we bought 75 RPM vinyls and 8 track tapes. And when Grand Funk came I bought an 8 track of them and I immediately loved them and expanded my music! They were, as you said amazing! Loved them, still do!! Thanks for loving them too!! 😘🌹
First concert I ever saw. I was 14 years old. I saw them at Madison Square Garden with Wet Willie and Suzi Quatro opening up for them. They were amazing. Mark Farner is an amazing player and individual.
If I recall correctly Mark Farner said in an interview he only had a couple of guitar lessons so he is one of those self taught guitar players. I think those who are self taught are the one's who develope a "style." GFR also got caught in that transitional period in early 70s where the 15 minute songs weren't happening anymore and music was becoming more commercially oriented and thus they started churning out the 3 minute songs like Locomotion and We're An American Band. New Jersey Exposed , what impressed me is he was self-taught on the guitar, he could play the piano, harmonica, he worked his amplifiers to create the sounds he wanted. Singer/songwriter epic performer and showmanship! He is a Rockstar! Highly underrated, indeed! He’s turned 70, and he’s still rocking!
Scott Greer it was in the very beginning. When they were still with Terry Knight. They were originally Terry Knight and the Pack. He was their manager/lead singer. But, he didn’t have the group’s best interests at heart. They pulled out of that situation and pushed Mark out front to sing. Renamed themselves, and there they were! I personally think that’s when they were their best. Then, creative differences, egos and jealousy emerged. GFR began to self-destruct. It’s a crying shame. They were their best together. 😢💔

Just absolutely amazing. I was in the navy and at Sea for a good bit of three years, through the peak of their greatness. We used to blow up speaker systems listening to these guys aboard Ship. It was a great way to chill out.... Mark, Don, and Mell !

I actually grew up with the band. I grew up in Flint, MI and went to school with Jason Frost - Craig Frost's kid brother. Craig is the keyboardist. I became a pro musician in part because of these guys. I gigged with Scott Frost, Craig's younger brother, for years. Craig joined Bob Segar after Grand Funk broke up in '76 and has been with him since...
I'll never understand why Mark's solo career never took off because he obviously had/has mega talent to sing, play, write, dance and be the best all around entertainer. But thank God we have great video footage of them at the height of Grand Funk✌💗💕💗💕💗💕💗💕

In '70/'71, they were one of the 'biggest' bands on the planet. They broke the Beatles Shea Stadium attendance record, and the concert sold out faster than the Beatles did. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" from that concert is incredible. Apparently the band is still touring with Don, Mel, and Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss) on lead guitar. Without Farner, it's just not Grand Funk Railroad. Kind of like Kiss was without Ace and Peter.
Peter - They were worried that Shea stadium would collapse with those concrete slabs visibly bouncing up and down from the weight of the fans jumping up and down...
My first concert ever was 1970 with Grand Funk Railroad. They were tight, entertaining and explosive. I worked up a sweat just watching them. My ears rang for 3 days. Thanks Fil for your analogy which is spot on.
I was a teenager in this era..The bands of that day were mind blowing in talent.We had so many great groups,Chicago,Tower of Power,3 dog night,humble pie,mott the hoople,Csn'y,traffic,Alice Cooper,the list is endless..I believe in my heart we will never again witness an era where every rock band was so electrifying..So miss this era..Just one day let me go back to 1970✌
I grew up on these guys having grown up in Michigan, over the years I have listened and witnessed live a lot of bands but I have never seen a 3 piece band do what these guys pulled off. Simply amazing music. Mark Farner is an absolute GOD musically speaking. Genius song writer, and his skill of the guitar and his voice, what a voice! Such a shame the way Mark has been treated over the years by Brewer, Schacher and Knight. If any band should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this band should!
Hi Fil. I got to see GFR back in their heyday in 1970 in Staten Island, New York. At the time they were just a trio unlike here. They were great. Mark couldn't get any credit for being a good player back in the day. I'm glad he's getting it now at least. That goes for all of GFR. Really good players. You got it - Marc Farner was a mega talent - writing the songs - singing - and playing some wicked guitar - he was a force to be reckoned with. These guys were quite the energy band in their day.

I was 8 when this came out...lol...my parents were sooo awesome and turned me on to many great and talented Bands and Singers...from the 50's-70's....I loovveee all genres of music...because, of my exposure, at a very young age, to Bands like GFR, CCR, The Beatles, Cat Stevens, etc. I so love your breakdowns and analysis of Bands, Fil!! “Absolutely EPIC vocals” were the words our very knowledgeable analyst Fil used to describe Farner’s voice. Fil was SPOT ON! Farner’s vocals are indeed world-class! One of my all-time favorite singers, right up there with the likes of Canada’s Burton Cummings of “The Guess Who”, “Journey”s former frontman Steve Perry, “The Eagles” Don Henley, and the voice of California’s “Ambrosia”, David Pack. These guys are the Crème de la Crème in the world of vocalists and Mark Farner is right up there in that category in my book! But Farner as a fully rounded musician edges out the other guys with his additional world-class talents of songwriting and music composition, guitarmanship (a great keyboardist and harmonica man too!), and he’s the ultimate showman! Long live Mark Farner! When he’s gone on to the other side it’ll surely be our loss and he’ll leave a big ol’ unfillable hole in the world of music. But our loss will be a real gain for the choir above. I’m certain they’ve got a place reserved for him in the heavenly band above! I look forward to hearing him perform up there!

@@wingsofpegasus Why you would wonder too limited shots of Mel .He did not want his technique copied. Mel Schocher. Wanted his style leagly offlimits..ie ..He pattened the play style. As you never ever hear Bass Guitar in most songs. Mel let it THUNDER as a Bass should!

Yep I’ll argue that it’s the SECOND best Live album…. Second only to the original LIVE ALBUM from 1970 by GFR which still is a mind blowing concert recording to me. The first concert I ever saw in person was the the very first concert of GFR”s 1974 tour and it was incredible. But the LIVE ALBUM from 1970 still amazes me!!!

When they added Craig Frost to the line up, their live sound just got bigger and better IMHO, and those first 3 songs on the first side all in quick succession work like magic. The "I'm Your Captain" treatment itself is very tasteful. It almost brings a tear to the eye.
I was so fortunate to see GFR 3 times in the early 70s. First in '71 again in '72 and then for the final time in early '74. That was definitely their heyday and I feel so privileged to have seen them in their prime. PS: I saw them in the Sportatorium in South Florida all three times.
They were my first concert at the Spectrum in Philly. The locomotion tour about 73 if my mind is still working. They did an unforgettable show. Thanks for the memories Fil.

Bring back the satin pants! It was so great to be a vocalist in those days. I got to work with lots of beautiful men with long hair, satin pants & spandex too. My women friends were so jealous, but those guys were my brothers..! My eyes never slept!
Finally. About time. GFR and Mark. You need to check footage out of them around 69-71. Especially the B&W footage of the Shea stadium gig and playing "on the inside looking out". Good colour footage of this song too. 11 minutes of magic. IMO by 74 they were slowly going downhill unfortunately. But 70-72 they were one of THE greatest bands on the planet.

And in the early years Mark played the keys live as well. So talented...so underrated. He played every instrument imaginable. And watch him when he walks across the stage especially during breaks and tempo changes...that is the count for those breaks and time changes. I recognized it years ago...I heard an interview he talked about.
I bought all of Grand Funk's albums back when I was in high school and one of my favorite American Bands. Years later in the mid eighties I saw him at a small venue and the music was true to form.
Mark Farner has something that Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, Joe Perry, and Eddie Van Halen don't have, and that is the ability to sing as well as they make their guitars sing! As always, Phil, you are 100 percent spot on in your perception of how special Mark Farner is as an artist

My goodness, that drummer was a bit much. Loud and loud. I admit, grand funk live was my first album, but then i listened to my brothers Yessongs triple live album and no more GFR.
@Wei Chan Vladislov Foghat were great! RIP 'Lonesome 'Dave Peverett and Rod 'the bottle' Price. Dave was touring with the band right up until a few months prior to his death from cancer, and his performances on guitar and vocals remained excellent. It was sad, as he looked emaciated, but was still giving it 'his all'.
Had a few of their albums when I was young. Recently rediscovered them and have purchased several of their CD'S. Great stuff love it more then before. This band has great energy. Good analysis again Fil, thanks.

I saw Mark Farner playing with the “Happy Together “ tour a couple years ago and he blew all the other “legends” ,who were also playing , away. I loved GFR when I was a kid and I’ve got to tell you his voice and guitar playing was every bit as good as I remember on the albums if not better. Absolutely amazing! Fil...awesome selection! I was on the radio for 10 years ('92-'02) and got to play Classic Rock the whole way. The original Grand Funk Railroad lineup created much of my favorite music. Here's what I dig most about your channel: You really dig the music. This live version (and the live album from the '74 tour)...all great. It's sad that they can't seem to get back together for one last great tour. Yes, politics. Mark's still got it, if you check out some of his current videos.

I saw GFR 3 times.They were amazingly tight and precise.They were loud and it made me feel like I was floating on air it sounded so good.I sure miss those days back then I know they will never come back but at least I was there then.
Fil, I really enjoyed that. Grand Funk was the group I listened to growing up. No one has their sound: a blue collar, Midwestern soul. To me, Grand Funk always had a freshness that flowed from their music. Every song seemed to be the product of a group that put everything they had into their performance. Fil, please do more reviews of Grand Funk. They are an amazing band.
As a kid, my older brothers and sisters were huge GFR fans...and I became one too. Absolute thrill to meet the band (albeit sans Mark) several years ago backstage before a show. Don Brewer is still one of my favorite Rock and Roll Drummers.... right up there with Bonzo (in my opinion). Thanks Fil for nailing it once again... Headed to Patreon now... come on there everybody. Same here! Saw them play at in Detroit at the Michigan State Fairgrounds long before they became famous. A very young Joe Walsh and The James Gang also played.
I was 14 in 1971 when I first saw them on tickets donated to our church. They were my first live rock band and I've been Grand Funk Railroad Forever ever since.
So many bands back then were able to play live just like they were in the studio with a lot less of the electronic things they have today it was a great time to grow up in
Yeah, he's a beast. I saw Stanley Jordan once, and his drummer had a set just as small. One less tom but a few more cymbals. He was kicking the shit out of his single bass, actually got a roll going, and stood up while he was rolling it. The crowd went nuts.

When I asked how how he got so good, he responded, “God-given and practice...slept with guitar in my hands.” When prodded about GFR, he would not say bad thing about other members. He is too classy.
Many do not know Mark’s son was paralyzed in a tragic accident. His spirit and faith carries him. God Bless Mark Farner. He made such an impression upon me. Thanks for reminded us how important he is in rock history.

You can tell him that the Troops, of which I was one in the mid 70's, absolutely loved GFR. The band was on every barracks party tape created, ALL their work. Even today as we have reunions those of us from the mid 70s still pull the music out. Thanks to all of them, especially Mark, for keeping us entertained when we were young and a long way from home. 😘💕

Mark said Heartbreaker was the first song he ever wrote when he was about 14 years old. I was at the Shea Stadium concert in 1971 when Humble Pie opened for them. Mark said he flew overhead in a helicopter while Humble Pie was on and said the entire stadium was bouncing. Two first rate bands at one fantastic concert; it is all the proof you need to see why it was a great time to be a teenager in the early 1970s.

They inducted Alice Cooper and Deep Purple only in the past few years...they should have been in many years ago. Also, they're electing rappers now. Ridiculous. After being inducted two or three years ago, Steve Miller slammed the HOF for making the inductees pay for their own expenses. When the Sex Pistols were elected, they didn't show up, and called the HOF "piss in wine". Screw Jann Wenner and the directors of the HOF.

Thanks for showcasing GFR and especially the incredibly talented Mark Farner. As you so rightly pointed out, Farner's vocals are superb. He is easily one of the greatest frontmen ever. Great Guitarist - Great Singer - Great Song Writer - Great Physique - Great Hair. Grand Funk were one of the few American bands from that early to mid 70's era that could compete with the massive onslaught of British bands that dominated the scene. The live recording of 'The Rail Road' is one of my all time favourite epic power rock ballads. That Grand Funk is not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is a mind numbing travesty.

Steven Tyler of Aerosmith said it: the rest of the band is usually insanely jealous of the frontman because he gets all the media attention and the best groupies! This has been shown to be very true, whether it's GFR or Chicago when they dumped Peter Cetera or Fleetwood Mac when they dumped Lindsey Buckingham. Jealousy is a horrible sin and wrecks many millions of insecure dopes. Sadly, the fans suffer when people can't be mature.
I am 72 years old and when I "grew up" I was basically a Motown/ soul- blues person, and back then, we bought 75 RPM vinyls and 8 track tapes. And when Grand Funk came I bought an 8 track of them and I immediately loved them and expanded my music! They were, as you said amazing! Loved them, still do!! Thanks for loving them too!! 😘🌹

First concert I ever saw. I was 14 years old. I saw them at Madison Square Garden with Wet Willie and Suzi Quatro opening up for them. They were amazing. Mark Farner is an amazing player and individual.
If I recall correctly Mark Farner said in an interview he only had a couple of guitar lessons so he is one of those self taught guitar players. I think those who are self taught are the one's who develope a "style." GFR also got caught in that transitional period in early 70s where the 15 minute songs weren't happening anymore and music was becoming more commercially oriented and thus they started churning out the 3 minute songs like Locomotion and We're An American Band. GFR the opening band for Led Zeplin and was kicked off the tour for getting a bigger applause. Another good video Phil. Gunnison Undercover
I think the band made a mistake going top 40ish to attract a larger fan base. They lost that heavy base Blues Rock sound that made them stand out.

New Jersey Exposed , what impressed me is he was self-taught on the guitar, he could play the piano, harmonica, he worked his amplifiers to create the sounds he wanted. Singer/songwriter epic performer and showmanship! He is a Rockstar! Highly underrated, indeed! He’s turned 70, and he’s still rocking!
That must've been very early 70,s when Zep got really big in 72 ,73 they didn't have an opening act.
Scott Greer it was in the very beginning. When they were still with Terry Knight. They were originally Terry Knight and the Pack. He was their manager/lead singer. But, he didn’t have the group’s best interests at heart. They pulled out of that situation and pushed Mark out front to sing. Renamed themselves, and there they were! I personally think that’s when they were their best. Then, creative differences, egos and jealousy emerged. GFR began to self-destruct. It’s a crying shame. They were their best together. 😢💔

In '70/'71, they were one of the 'biggest' bands on the planet. They broke the Beatles Shea Stadium attendance record, and the concert sold out faster than the Beatles did. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" from that concert is incredible. Apparently the band is still touring with Don, Mel, and Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss) on lead guitar. Without Farner, it's just not Grand Funk Railroad. Kind of like Kiss was without Ace and Peter.
Except Grand Funk without Mark is like Kiss without Gene and Paul.

I grew up on these guys having grown up in Michigan, over the years I have listened and witnessed live a lot of bands but I have never seen a 3 piece band do what these guys pulled off. Simply amazing music. Mark Farner is an absolute GOD musically speaking. Genius song writer, and his skill of the guitar and his voice, what a voice! Such a shame the way Mark has been treated over the years by Brewer, Schacher and Knight. If any band should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this band should!
Hi Fil. I got to see GFR back in their heyday in 1970 in Staten Island, New York. At the time they were just a trio unlike here. They were great. Mark couldn't get any credit for being a good player back in the day. I'm glad he's getting it now at least. That goes for all of GFR. Really good players. One of my all-time favorite singers, right up there with the likes of Canada’s Burton Cummings of “The Guess Who”, “Journey”s former frontman Steve Perry, “The Eagles” Don Henley, and the voice of California’s “Ambrosia”, David Pack. These guys are the Crème de la Crème in the world of vocalists and Mark Farner is right up there in that category in my book! But Farner as a fully rounded musician edges out the other guys with his additional world-class talents of songwriting and music composition, guitarmanship (a great keyboardist and harmonica man too!), and he’s the ultimate showman!
Long live Mark Farner! When he’s gone on to the other side it’ll surely be our loss and he’ll leave a big ol’ unfillable hole in the world of music. But our loss will be a real gain for the choir above. I’m certain they’ve got a place reserved for him in the heavenly band above! I look forward to hearing him perform up there!

Yep I’ll argue that it’s the SECOND best Live album…. Second only to the original LIVE ALBUM from 1970 by GFR which still is a mind blowing concert recording to me. The first concert I ever saw in person was the the very first concert of GFR”s 1974 tour and it was incredible. But the LIVE ALBUM from 1970 still amazes me!!!

When they added Craig Frost to the line up, their live sound just got bigger and better IMHO, and those first 3 songs on the first side all in quick succession work like magic. The "I'm Your Captain" treatment itself is very tasteful. It almost brings a tear to the eye.
I was so fortunate to see GFR 3 times in the early 70s. First in '71 again in '72 and then for the final time in early '74. That was definitely their heyday and I feel so privileged to have seen them in their prime. PS: I saw them in the Sportatorium in South Florida all three times.

Good colour footage of this song too. 11 minutes of magic. IMO by 74 they were slowly going downhill unfortunately. But 70-72 they were one of THE greatest bands on the planet.

And in the early years Mark played the keys live as well. So talented...so underrated. He played every instrument imaginable. And watch him when he walks across the stage especially during breaks and tempo changes...that is the count for those breaks and time changes. I recognized it years ago...I heard an interview he talked about.
I bought all of Grand Funk's albums back when I was in high school and one of my favorite American Bands. Years later in the mid eighties I saw him at a small venue and the music was true to form.

@Wei Chan Vladislov Foghat were great! RIP 'Lonesome 'Dave Peverett and Rod 'the bottle' Price. Dave was touring with the band right up until a few months prior to his death from cancer, and his performances on guitar and vocals remained excellent. It was sad, as he looked emaciated, but was still giving it 'his all'.

Fil...awesome selection! I was on the radio for 10 years ('92-'02) and got to play Classic Rock the whole way. The original Grand Funk Railroad lineup created much of my favorite music. Here's what I dig most about your channel: You really dig the music. This live version (and the live album from the '74 tour)...all great. It's sad that they can't seem to get back together for one last great tour. Yes, politics. Mark's still got it, if you check out some of his current videos.

They were a great band. It's a shame that you rarely hear of them...even on classic rock radio staions. They play the same old crap we've heard a million times before! GFR rocked!👍😎🎸🎶

And when they play GFR, they play the Locomotion and other later pop stuff. Their early stuff rivals any band of the time.
In 1972 I picked up my first guitar because of this song. Mark Farner is one of the greatest Guitarists and songwriters of all time.
Man there is nothing like a band that delivers live! Stevie ray Vaughn often out did what he did in the studio, nothing like that live energy that is so tight and loud , I love this video, thx wings, once again I love your agendas!!

This era had some of the most KILLER male vocals....the technicality, the power.....was truly incredible when u compound the hair, spandex, sometimes makeup.... man

I saw GFR 3 times.They were amazingly tight and precise.They were loud and it made me feel like I was floating on air it sounded so good.I sure miss those days back then I know they will never come back but at least I was there then.
Fil, I really enjoyed that. Grand Funk was the group I listened to growing up. No one has their sound: a blue collar, Midwestern soul. To me, Grand Funk always had a freshness that flowed from their music. Every song seemed to be the product of a group that put everything they had into their performance. Fil, please do more reviews of Grand Funk. They are an amazing band.

As a kid, my older brothers and sisters were huge GFR fans...and I became one too. Absolute thrill to meet the band (albeit sans Mark) several years ago backstage before a show. Don Brewer is still one of my favorite Rock and Roll Drummers.... right up there with Bonzo (in my opinion). Thanks Fil for nailing it once again... Headed to Patreon now... come on there everybody. Show Fil some support!

Such a shame what the other 2 did 2 him..just saddens me deeply & how so many others feel, as well 😥. Glad Mark is still performing on his own, tho. They were all SO very talented...

Same here! Saw them play at in Detroit at the Michigan State Fairgrounds long before they became famous. A very young Joe Walsh and The James Gang also played.

I was 14 in 1971 when I first saw them on tickets donated to our church. They were my first live rock band and I've been Grand Funk Railroad Forever ever since.

So many bands back then were able to play live just like they were in the studio with a lot less of the electronic things they have today it was a great time to grow up in

Yeah, he's a beast. I saw Stanley Jordan once, and his drummer had a set just as small. One less tom but a few more cymbals. He was kicking the shit out of his single bass, actually got a roll going, and stood up while he was rolling it. The crowd went nuts.
also I bet he's pretty hot in that shirt. It makes me think of Seinfeld's "I don't wanna be a pirate" line.
