- TransPennine Overcrowding whilst Freight Delights at Carlisle
24 March 23
TransPennine Express have been responsible for the service from Carlisle to Edinburgh in the first week after the Carstairs blockade and whilst only the line towards Edinburgh is open. Avanti have run hourly trains to Glasgow with reversal at Midcalder Junction.
s most people realise, Fridays are usually busy especially in the run up to Easter. TPE's service is every two hours between Manchester airport and Edinburgh alternating with a two hour frequency as far as Carlisle. On Friday 24th, the Edinburgh trains were reported Full and Standing before reaching Carlisle in both directions! On one train potential passengers (fortunately they were heading south) were left behind.
On a happier note the regular freights were running. DRS's engineer's train was of added interest when it took empty Point & Crossing transports south to Crewe, presumably after taking points components to Carstairs.
GBRf ran cement empties towards the S&C and Clitheroe.
Freightliner brought a 66 from Tyne Yard presumably for use on engineers trains over the coming weekend.

Great video Les, you have been capturing some interesting runs up there recently. Regards Peter
Thanks!
Great video les really enjoyed watching
Glad you enjoyed it
just came across your videos and channel Leslie fantastic to watch keep up the good work.
Many thanks.im glad that you like them
Great to see cement train back and crew change nice one les👌
Thanks! Not only is it back but with fewer wagons available it's running twice a week
Another awesome video thanks for sharing it😊
Thanks!
Always find your videos to be fascinating. There's something special about Carlisle station.
Thanks, it's a special place.
Transpenine really do need to get their act together, as they are just as bad for overcrowding and timekeeping on the other side of the Pennines.
Great footage as per Les, thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Colin. Overcrowded or cancelled.
Brilliant video Leslie. I understand Avanti are running to Glasgow via Mid Calder junction. That will entail a reversal en route.
Thanks Euan. Yes, thats happening on weekdays.
You sure know how to deliver interesting videos.
Late last year on a trip from Oz, I only had one cancelled trian in a month in the UK, a TPE from Preston to Manchester but fortunately there was another route I could use.
Annoying for passengers BUT terrific to see so many using rail - true when I was there as well, and I covered a few thousand kilometres. I gather TPE lacks sufficient drivers?
Especially good work photographing the freights that are different: we don't have rail-carrying wagons arranged like the ones you depicted. Love the softwoods (?) train and great that you photographed the train examiner's waybill. Very well done: you have an eye for detail.
I hope thousands more view your videos as they sure are good.
Thanks. I really appreciate that!
TPE sadly lack decent management of their operational and staff planning. The lack of drivers excuse wears thin! You were fortunate in that Preston to Manchester is well served by Northern with their frequent Blackpool services and Airport to Barrow and Windermere services.
Thanks Leslie, lot of bodies here there and everywhere.
Thanks for sharing. Love seeing the different equipment that you have over there vs what we have in the states. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks John, it interesting how GM and GE interpret their American products for the UK.
Les,we were there too ,you caught us taking photo of the jubilee 66 ,we had just got off the Leeds train, also we were on the air force one to Lancaster.
Well there we are! Hope you enjoyed the trip around the coast.
Yes thanks,we always do ,the Windows could have done with a clean they were disgusting
@@BarbaraMoore-rs2xm I was discussing that after a trip on the settle and Carlisle line today
Very interesting trains and equipment. You get some really nice views from the platform Leslie! (Dave).
Thanks Dave. I think it's good seeing the differently routed trains passing through a single place
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Your very welcome. Agree with you.
Some serious tonnage in a couple of those freights Leslie..nice one, all the best.
Thanks Tim. It takes patience to get them but at least the loads are always different
Hey Leslie, great video as ever. I drive the A702 frequently and there's a section of it runs parallel to the WCML at Abington in South Lanarkshire. One of the days I was driving along it 66 080 was parked up on the Main Down with the very same wagons it was towing in your video. I saw it parked there about 10am and it was till there at 3.30 when I was going the other way. This was during the time when the line was closed for works at Carstairs.
Thanks! The DB working from Carlisle to Crewe actually originates at Millerhill, Edinburgh. It brings Network Rail engineering wagons which have been concentrated at Millerhill from various jobs in Scotland down to Carlisle and then runs on to Crewe, returning that night northwards! So your observation doesn't surprise me!
I certainly do enjoy buddy.🚄🙂👍
Thank you!
Hey, Leslie... interesting video. I am liking the new intros a lot, btw. What a mad crush to get caught in. I feel so bad for all the travelers getting messed around. And yet, I sit and stare at those TPEs and Avantis and think about how cool they look. I think I feel guilty. Definitely a good freight day so glad you had some good filming to get in! Cheers!
Thanks Anthony. I think it's more comfortable from the study although camera is resting on a pile of books with a shop lamp lighting the room and me sat on a squeaky chair. It does make retakes easier!
Bom dia leslie movimentação do trem Bom lindo afoto
Thanks!
hi Les great video as always i guess you were pleased to go to the station after all that mix up feel sorry for the passengers that had to stand i suppose the sooner Carstairs is finished the better i look forward to next video pls look after yourself and stay safe my friend
Thanks. I had seen the departure screens warning of the overcrowding but it was only when it was pointed out to me that people were getting OFF the 397s before they departed I realised how bad it was!
Will it, though? The TPE service to EDB is 2-hourly. When the CRS route is open again, it will still be 2-hourly to EDB.
I wondered whether 2 locos with one 'dead in tow' still merited a '0' headcode or a '6', but your comment at 3:10 seems to have answered that one. I don't understand why TPE didn't extend the normally to GLC but terminating at CAR to EDB for the duration of the CRS blockade.
It crossed my mind a few times. I agree that TPE could have run all their terminating trains to EDB but no doubt they'd say no drivers or something .
@@LeslieGilpinRailways No doubt they'd have a plausable, but totally unacceptable to passengers, excuse.
very interesting thanks, does anyone know how I can find a copy of the WCML working timetable for the section Oxenholme to Carlisle as most of these workings pass my house and it would be great to know what is what, I live in an old LNWR railway house about 5O metres from the line !
Steward - they are available on the internet- I managed to find them but cant remember what page. Try searching for Network Rail Working Timetables. CZ03 is the freight WTT for Balshaw Lane to Gretna Jn
Rare to see a 68 hauling freight!! I thought they only did TPE passenger services?
The majority of 68s have always been used on freight. Even more so now that TransPennine aren't using any. Only Chiltern use them on Passenger work I think
Ah okay that’s cool, I just never really noticed them around hauling freight before.
Another awesome video Les some great captures there matey , as for T P E they need to be
oostead imediately not in october when the trial period is up , i just wonder how many of those would be passengers missed there flights. P T E are abysmal, no consideration for the passengers at all . ☹ 👎 yes it was a cracking day for freight Les thanks for sharing
take care and stay safe a t b Syd👍👌
The powers that be should know better! First Group seniors must do a lot of lobbying in Whitehall. Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks!
And thank you!
Wonderful video
Thanks!
I can see why you went there.(Plenty of trains) Even with limited services the station seem's to be packed with a lot of mixed traffic. Strange to see crew change on a busy platform and then freight running slowly down the platforms without stopping. Amazing old school Juntion Station what, if anything, goes down track on the left? Why did they not extend the trains or run a double set? There seems to be a passing loop in the station, light double diesel used it but stopped? It almost seems like the station is a compulsory time stop for all trains.
Considering there arent as many trains to and from Scotland at the moment through Carlisle, the station remains remarkably busy. All passenger stations stop or terminate at Carlisle. nd the lines from several directions connect in to the Anglo Scottish trains. The freights sometimes change crews here rather than running via the yard- its a quicker procedure for the drivers too. The mixed freight are for Network Rail carrying whatever engineering related stuff they are given, and sometimes a loco to tow too. The freights often have to wait for a path behind the faster passenger trains. Sometimes that may mean a 30 minute wait. By line 'to the left' I assume you mean the line towards Newcastle and to the Settle & Carlisle line towards Leeds. The Newcastle line gets 2 passenger trains an hour each way, the S&C perhaps hourly each way. I just don't often film them!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways It sure looks like a steep climb up from newcastle??? I thought that was the main line up the middle. Never the less its a great juction station.
Too think 66s are quite old locos now.
The oldest are 25 years old now
If they hadn’t stopped building the line too Galashiels that would of been finished by now and the perfect diversion route 🙄
Indeed it could be, certainly for Edinburgh. All the focus appears to be with a service to Glasgow and forget the Capital
⭐️👌🦺
Thanks
