- Deltic 55009 adds to the Carlisle Variety!
55009 Alycidon, plus classes 56, 57, 66, 68, 70.
27 & 29 March 23
Over these two days I recorded DRS 68027 twice with the afternoon engineer's train to crewe. On the first day it was hauling a DRS Class 66 dead at the head of a train of track and spent ballast. On the second day it took a SB Rail Kirow 250 crane.
Class 70s, as usual, hauled both the Logs and the Land Recovery trains on both days.
A light class 56 passed through, en route to Leeds Balm Road.
But the highlight was surely the arrival of Deltic 55009 Alycidon on a test run from Carnforth, and return. Unfortunately the presence of a TPE 397 in Platform 1 blocked a good view of the departure but the arrival is stately. The train was tailed by a West Coast class 57.

Fantastic Video Les ,Great combination of Multiple units ,Diesel and Classic Thrash ❤️ To Goods and Railfreight to video ❤️,Just amazing 😍
Thanks!
A superb video from Carlisle Leslie with a nice variety of trains. The Deltic was a real treat. Very enjoyable viewing. Jeff.
Thanks Jeff
Another good one Leslie!
Happy memories in regards to the Deltics as a child they used scare the life out of me that sound
Its strange how sounds had such effect and memories. For me they always meant York!
Very good video, I managed to see the deltic at Carnforth.
Thanks! Glad you actually got to see it
Great video les. Keep up the great work. 👍👍👍
Thanks
What a fantstic sight Alycidon makes as she glides into Carlisle. Absolutly superb catch Les, thanks for sharing, Have a great week, Colin.
Thanks Colin. I wish I could have seen here head south but there we are
Awesome video Leslie
Thanks!
It was nice to meet your today.
As you said, there wasn't much happening at Carlisle, but at least I got to see a few Avanti West Coaat pendolinos, which don't come over to my side of the country, the ECML.
Regards from sunny Whitley Bay
Nice to chat Brian!
What a great mix of classes Les .The Deltic sounds so powerful and unlike any other diesel. 👍👍
I stood next to it last time it was in Edinburgh. My hearing has never quite recovered!
Whatever happened to MK1 coaches going to be banned, years ago, or did I dream that?
@@hoffwell their use is pretty limited to excursion trains.
Great video 👌
Thanks
Hi Leslie. Nice to chat to you today at Appleby..Kev
And you Kev. Hope you both got some cool pics and vids
Lovely mix of locos Les, fantastic to see a Deltic out and about!
Thanks! The Deltic was certainly a bonus
hi leslie very good duncan
Thanks
Brilliant to see the old along side the new locomotives. Love the sounds of the diesel engines. Thanks.
Thanks.
G’day from downunder. Subscribed for a while now. Always a diesel fan and it’s great to see what is happening in other parts of the world. Your videos are great. Keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍.
No other sound like it Leslie. Love the Deltics. Great 30 mins. very enjoyable. All the best.
Thanks Tim. Recognisable sound even if you can't see the loco
As always you don't disappoint with the shoots. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Thanks Mike
Time for a new mic for the intros Mr. G! Great video as always. Many thanks.
Working on it! Thanks
Seeing 55009 reminded me of the never to be forgotten times of the prototype Deltic hammering through Hatfield, Herts. It was so impressive and different to everything else.
Now sir I am jealous that you saw the prototype in action!
Great compilation Les, plenty of variety there with the highlight being Alycidon, great to see a Deltic back on the WCML, cheers 👍
Thanks Nige. It was good to see.
Hi Les Another great mix of traction in this one, as ever the Deltic is impressive although my favourite bit was the 70 on the Land Recovery boxes viewed from the footbridge, personally I do like to see whats in the wagons..lol. Thanks
Thanks Peter. I agree at seeing into the wagons but have a thing for Deltics!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Hi Les I think we all have 'a thing' for Deltic's...lol
hi once again Les again a good mixture of freight and passenger movements and amongst them 2 great locos the Deltic you cant miss and one of my favorites a 56 dont see or hear much of them now hope they both will keep going for a while yet well look forward to your next video pls look after yourself and stay safe my friend
Many thanks!
Bom dia leslie lindo afoto trem
Thanks
Great video as always Les, it was lovely seeing the deltic out and about, could tell she’d been working hard with all that oil down the side (normal for deltics it’s the lubricating oil), the twin napiers sounded so good that even the camera struggled to pick it up well!
Thanks! The guys accompanying it seemed worried about that oil. I'm still playing with my new mic.
What a classic to catch! Nice one along with the expected beautiful, busy bastions of British railways, but a working Deltic... that's rare on video for me!
Thanks Anthony. Their sound is unmistakable and for a passenger loco they look like powerful brutes!
Great Video Les i thought the Deltic would have had a tail lights on as it is a rule
Thanks. Not sure about your observation, as I've seen other shunting moves where it hasn't happened.
Solway Steam is on my shelf where I live in Dunblane. My late mother owned 12 Eden Street Silloth. When we stayed there when I was a boy my bedroom overlooked the bowling club and the station, sidings etc. Thanks for your videos' Les.
Wow that's great to know. I regret not going there until after the station building was demolished.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways A few tales to tell about Silloth and the railway from when I was a boy and teenager. I'm 70 now to give context.
I remember my mam would take us to Carlisle on 'Western' buses Black and White, as I called them, coaches from Victoria bus station to Glasgow. Dropped off at Citadel early doors. Probably about 05:45am and the railwaymen spotted us.
I've never forgotten they invited us into the staff canteen, fed us and wouldn't let mum pay!
Over the footbridge to platform 7 or 8 and first train to Silloth. I remember a DMU from which passengers and driver were separated by a glass panel. I do know the approx dates and details but a bit tired tonight.
Had fun naughtily and manually shunting wagons about Carr's mill sidings. And wonderful memories of jumping off grain ships into the hold of Russian boats.
Better stop now. Thanks Les.
@@m1klgordon living at the other end of Cumbria and then being only 5 when it closed, I'd never had the opportunity to get to Silloth. And now you would struggle to spot the trackbed in most places.
Can't say we're starved of variety, even the weather looked marginally better.
Thanks Andy. Full range of weather those days
It was good to see the Deltic out after so long I hoped to get it leaving the yard but they did not hang about turning the train and it was already away when I got there. Even so a good day out and I saw it pass through Crewe the next day. Trans Pennine 68's on engineers trains and Poppy was on a Trans Pennine the other day
It was. I'd hoped to get a better going away shot but there we are. It was meant to go into a siding at London Road before going to Upperby but headed to Upperby and Carnforth instead
@@LeslieGilpinRailways It was so quick I wondered if they turned round but have seen video of it heading back and know it did have the Deltic leading. Ah well walking keeps me fit.
Great video Les as ever loved it , i must say 68027 pulled away very gingerly out of p3 was it on thunderbird duties for some reason 🥺 the big beasty deltic sounded nice but not so happy about the oil leak down the side prob a turbo leaking ? pleasd the weather was an lmprovement for you, nice to see the sun getting through a bit . awesome vid Les thanks for sharing take care matey A T b Syd 👍
Thanks Syd, weather still variable but that blustery wind still ruins the sound. DRS have been using 68027 for some days now up and down to Crewe. No idea why it's not back with TPE. Thunderbirds are class 57s only used as stand bys for Avanti services
The Napiers in the class 55's did not have turbochargers as such but had scavenge blowers driven by the engines.
Oil from the exhaust ports and running down the sides of the loco is fairly normal as they are two stroke with lubricating oil being in the exhaust. This is normally burned off hence the characteristic blue smoke but some may be unburned hence the staining.
Lovely video Les and thank you! I watch all your videos and really enjoy them, you always do a great job at the begining with great intro`s when you describe what`s to come in the video. Can I ask about the Dapol open wagon you have on the shelf, Is it a limited edition? I am really envious of this wagon, and I would like one for my loft railway.
Kind Regards
Kev 🤗
Thanks!
The Dapol wagon is a limited edition of one that would have been based at my local station from childhood days. Certainly my late father told me about it.- I think Crafty Hobbies at Barrow in Furness commissioned them some years ago and may have one left. C&M Models at Carlisle might have one left too.
A Deltic, a treat indeed.
I prefer these older trains, 20s, 31s, 37s, and so on. Basically up to when the 92s started rolling out. I haven't been spotting since (I don't get the time), but when I do pass a rail line I'll always look!
Please don't get me wrong though, I think the class 70s look badass and the Avanti are pretty cool. But I think I would give them a change of colour? The gray freight livery for the 70s, 66s and the intercity swallow colours for the Avanti? Just my thoughts, I maybe outta touch now!?...to old school?😅
It's been a while since I last went train spotting! You can tell can't ya!😂
Great video as always Mr Gilpin.🙂👍
Thanks. I like the older 'classic' stuff too but modern locos are cool. Rail Blue was more my era, the period until 2 years ago largely passed me by!
🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thanks
So we have a Cat, a Paxman and a Deltic, could their be anything more that sounds so harmonious.
HEhe, I'll admit I have a thing for that Deltic sound
My birthday. 1:54 😅
cool
i like diesels

Please dont tell Drivers how to Drive Trains.the Signal you mentioned is a controlled Signal.
My apologies. Not my intention. Purely an observer who overheard a comment whilst recording.
