    Trains at Carlisle.
    2 excursion loco fails
    10-12 July 2022
    On Sunday 10th, Carlisle saw few regular passenger trains and the odd freight. A Surprise working was an ROG class 37 heading from Derby to Kilmarnock. It returned south on the Tuesday. The Colas / Network Rail New Measurement train also made an appearance. The highlight for me was the appearance of Jubilee class 45690 Leander. All looked good until the loco was running around its train, left in platform 1. It took water at High Wapping Sidings rather than when it got to Upperby for turning. Turned out that whilst at Carlisle a superheater element failed with the result that there was no way Leander could haul a train. No auxiliary diesel either so one was sent via the WCML from Steamtown, Carnforth,
    Monday 11th was, I suppose, an ordinary day. Apart from TPE cancellations (the norm these days) everything appeared to be running smoothly. I recorded trains both at Etterby, north of the city, and on the station. Trains included TPE 68s, including one being delivered from York en route to the DRS Kingmoor TMD.
    Tuesday 12th was when West Coast had more bad luck. We couldn't work out, from Real Time Trains, what was happening at Hellifield. Turned out British India Line had failed at Bentham, en route from Carnforth to Hellifield (where it would have coupled onto the Dalesman). A pipe connecting the tender to the loco had burst. As a result the pair of 37s hauled the Dalesman all the way to Carlisle and back. So bad for the steam enthusiasts but good for lovers of classic diesels and Class 37s!

    Hi Leslie Another great video, it always seems so busy there, I've only been a couple of times on a Saturday (last year I think), but didn't see anything like as much as you do, lol. Thanks

      Peter, thanks! It isn't so much that it's busy all at once but spread over quite a few hours each visit! Apart from charters and excursions it can be quiet on a Saturday.

    Hi Lesiie,
    We have things going wrong on our model railways all the time but seeing this just shows we are not the only ones to suffer so a super video I have liked it but why not many have is very strange but well done always nice to see well photographed full size engines.
    Cheers Robert.

    Hi Leslie (from my sick bed). Most horrendous flu/cold but testing negative for covid. To entertain myself I'm watching your video's. I see you managed to get Tim Geaney in this one (he of the thick long wollen socks). Cracking footage of the trains that is - not Tim😄. Thanks Syd. I'm no expert but I would have thought that replacing a superheater element was relatively straightforward once the engine is cold.

    Thanks for sharing. I always think that mainline steam excursions should always be top and tailed with steam and diesel. This is so the train is turned around in the shortest time possible when there is a failure. As I would hate to see steam not allowed on Network Rail anymore due to the number of failures! Looks like Carlisle still has a lot of bullhead rails which are showing their age & wear at the fishplate joints!

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому +1

      Bill I think the operators have 50 years experience now since excursions were resumed after the 68 steam ban. It still surprises me though when they send out the odd failure. Yes lots of bullhead in the sidings at Carlisle - and the last remaining bullhead on the WCML running lines.

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev 2 роки тому +1

    Leader seemed to be steaming well enough, had a full head of steam departing Carlisle, would a broken superheater thingumidoodle have completely disabled it?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 роки тому

      It was sufficient an issue for West Coast to declare it a failure. Although it maintained 200lb of steam pressure and went for turning with its support coach, it wasn't allowed to haul anything.
