Hi, I'm Les Gilpin.
I'm a lifelong railway enthusiast now based in Carlisle and a railway historian. I'm spending more and more time recording videos in Carlisle and on the lines radiating from there. Diesel, Electric or Steam - if it looks good I'll record it!
I'm also a keen railway modeller. I'm currently modelling Canadian and US railroads freelance in 1:160 n scale: a new version of my Canuck Union lines. You'll find videos of some of the smaller model railway exhibitions I've attended and occasionally of my own layout.
My railway history interests are mostly the railways of Cumbria (UK) for which I've written 4 books. I'm also interested in the history of railways in Canada and the USA including for some of the more obscure places I've visited. I record hours of video for UA-cam when I go,

A Lorry on the Tracks and
Trains at Carlisle.
The Ploughs didn't move!
13 December 24
It was a murky day when I went to Carlisle Station to see a pair of West Coast Class 37s return a pair of snow ploughs to Eastriggs. However it didn't move.
It was some while before I realised that something was amiss at Gretna - ScotRail were cancelling their trains. A Lorry was on the tracts near Gretna Green.
I filmed a few trains at Carlisle though - the Dalston Tanks, the engineering train to Basford Hall, the logs and the engineer's train from Tyne Yard. A few passenger trains too.
The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.

@@martinfromwrose I haven't seen reports other than he went to Dumfries hospital.
I think your caption should have read "Cancelled due to a problem OFF a road!" My sense of humour. Tha's a fair length of track that got shifted. Judging by the map, the driver couldn't decide whether to go off into Sspringfield or continue South so headed for the middle ground.

Great video @LeslieGilpinRailways & the truck diver was lucky not trains were passing at the time I wonder how long those 37s are staying at Carlisle with the ploughs to head to eastriggs

@@LeslieGilpinRailways ah OK no worries
Why are 6K05 and 6J37 apparently no longer running via the S & C?
6J37 has been down the S&C recently but generally both have been down the main line to leave paths for the Rail Head Treatment Train. It will be interesting to see which route they follow next week
Very lucky there were no trains when the lorry crashed Unless a medical cause, I hope they get a hefty fine for that. It did make an interesting day out for you.
Indeed. Well it was a diversion for an hour or so for me
It's a bloody good job that a train wasn't coming when the LGV crashed; the consequences are too significant to contemplate.

Nice views out in the country. The last of the Royal Mail units? I thought they had all gone South already. So quick to get rid of them, meanwhile they get a huge fine for delivering the mail late, surely that will only get worse using our over congested roads instead.

Wonderful footage today, Les! Great scenery to shoot in, and some fab catches!
I thought you'd like the pastoral scenery at the start
hi, great video, why did D400 breakdown ? were any of the 325's offered for sale ?
D400 refused to start one morning last week. A fitter was called and decided it needed to go back to Crewe. Presumably the Royal Mail decided they wanted to get rid quickly and get the scrap value.
Amazing how quickly royal mail has sent those units for scrap, what happens now if road transport is deemed unfit for purpose? probably begging the government of the time to buy them a fleet of new units to fill the void or outsource it to GBRF/DB Cargo
I think if Royal Mail do return to rail then they'll outsource rather than buy / lease directly. Meanwhile Varamis are showing what patience can achieve
The universal postal service is being done away with. You will only get 6 deliveries of 2nd class letter every 13 days. First class letters will stay the same, except the Saturday delivery of letters will stop. Then in about 3 years time, maybe sooner you will only get a delivery every second day. We have tried so hard to stop this. They made the posties walks ( round) so long and unachievable that most of the postal rounds are failing all over the UK. Some places are not getting mail for a week or two. And it doesn't help that new staff who have started less than 2 years ago, are on new crap contracts with less money, sick pay and generally being treated like dogs. That's why only 1 out off every 7 new starts last more than a month. And it's all planned. The decline has been planned so that royal mail will give the letters back to the government , or get a hefty subsidies to keep delivering letters. There are still 8 billion letters being delivered per year. I started in the mid 90s and it was a great job, now ruined. The lib dems and Tories sold it to their mates for pennies. Before it was sold, the company brought in to audit the buildings, vehicles and generally what everything was worth said royal mail had property in London worth £4 million. 2 months after the sell off one of the former buildings that they had said was worth around £300,000 went for £12.4 million. The taxpayer got fucked big time. And now there's only 1 mail centre in London when there was 8 at privatisation. They are getting did off the workers who have been there for 30/40 or more years as there on the good contracts and better pension. I'm 56 and took my pension and got out. Now the offices are full of casual staff, a lot can't even read or speak English. I kid you not. And as for getting did off the trains the big review they just had, they then realised they didn't have enough trailers to move the quantity of letters that they still get. They will be back on rail soon, within a year especially with the parcels. Sorry for the rant but what was once a great service was ruined by the money elite and badly shit talking liberal democrats.
@@Rondon68 I've noticed that here in our rural area. At one time we had brilliant long serving local posties the type of people who would look out for vulnerable people and were part of the community. I worked in the local villages and would get to know them over time. Now always new faces, nothing wrong with the people, but they move on after a while.
@@Rondon68 Some of this sounds the same as the railways being privatised, and look at the mess they are in now with government having to take back control. Both were great industries to work in with good conditions and a good pension scheme. Sure the decision to scrap the trains so quickly was to make sure no one could get hold of them and compete. Usually old locos and stock linger for months even years before being moved to scrap yards.
325's, whats happening with the vehicle with the pantograph? Each video i see is of hauled 3 cars, curious as to why.
Apparently the motor cars - with pantograph - have already been scrapped
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I heard they were unfit to be moved by rail so were taken by road to a scrappers in Glasgow. A sad end to a good unit.
Nice to see stock on the fly in the countryside. The Russel train had its customary tank and TESCO reefer containers. The rear lights on the 37 where not very bright compared with the flashing red on the freights. Trouble with 325 was their design for one job only, the loco can be rebuilt but the stock, possibly the army use?
If they'd been owned by DB or another operator they may have seen a new life. Instead Royal Mail only see scrap as the future for them
Nice camera work on those long-range shots Les. Good distance to be at - almost like watching a model railway
Its a good spot - just the right distance from the line and a handy large gateway to park in
Another great selection and Class 37's are always a welcome sight. Sad to see the 325 on it's last journey.
