Steamy! Primus officially does NOT suck now nor did they ever truly suck to the level with which they were once expected but I think over the years they've established themselves as a truly unique sound and intense version of funk and metal that no one has ever heard ever.
Ed. Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed. You are a man of a certain age. You are a man with a good depth of rock knowledge. You are a rock musician. I simply cannot fathom how you've never heard Primus before, especially this song. It was on MTV. It was on radio. They toured pretty relentlessly. I just...can't...even.
I KNOW! What was I thinking? In my mind over the years I had apparently convinced myself I didn't like them because for some reason I had the wrong impression of who they were. Really stupid of me because all those years I avoided them could have been filled with amazing musicianship and great songwriting. Thank goodness we're doing this show! Now I know!
Sad about Ed being oblivious to Primus's stellar musical existence over the past thirty years, and only wish that I was in a similar position regarding that awful Billie Eilish person, especially after she ran the Grammys' major categories last night. The infinitely-more-talented Chris "Not Kris!" Cross did the same thing back in '81, and sadly his career never fully-recovered. So thanks to both MTV and the fickle, tone-deaf-ears-of-fate -for-that-grave-injustice. Hopefully a similar fate awaits Ms. Eilish. And, say, did Primus ever win any Grammy Awards?!? (Answer: No, but one nomination back in '95 for "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver".)
Many a man has overlooked the unique and alluring sound of Primus but one day they grab the cockles....of your heart and tickle with a rhythmic staccato beat and the funk permeates your soul....then you're hooked like the 'ol diamondback sturgeon.
It's very easy to get the wrong impression of Primus, because you can't judge them by their fans. Primus' fan base extends across so many types of people. The skate punk guys like Primus. The Metal guys like Primus. The Nerd Rock guys like Primus. The Funk guys like Primus. If the first group of people you see really talking about Primus are a bunch of Thrash Metal fans, then you'll naturally assume that that's what they're like. But in the words of Rocket Raccoon, "Ain't nobody like me, but me." Back in the days of WinAmp, the folks ended up putting them in as their own genre, 'cos they couldn't figure out where they fit.
The guitar player was the original guitarist for the death metal band Possessed. Check out their debut album Seven Churches. You'll see the difference. Haha
Jerry sounds a whole lot easier to play than it really is...I can’t count the times my basses just about went thru tv’s, apt windows, down the stairs...lol
Primus is not thrash, but bassist and frontman Les Claypool did once try out for Metallica. He's friends with Kirk Hammett and was brought in for an audition, where he asked if the members of Metallica wanted to jam some Isley Brothers. He didn't get the gig. James Hetfield said later it was because they thought he was too talented to be in an established act and should do his own thing. Les claims it's because he's too weird. Both are probably true. Kirk and Het later ended up in the music video for Primus' "John The Fisherman".
Doug, so all these years later, is that cease and desist letter still in effect from that cute girl who featured in that Dexys Midnight Runner video? And does she still reign supreme in your heart?!? And all kidding aside, nice pick with this Primus video. Really enjoy Tim "Herb" Alexander's excellent percussive skills on this one. "Tommy The Cat", featuring a guest vocal turn by Tom Waits is also a killer jam...
We are not savages, shirts should always be worn, regardless of cuteness levels. My MOOBS are for my eyes only, and Junior Samples' kin never sent me back our-shared overalls upon his untimely passing back in the day, sigh.
If you guys want another weird and wonderful band, look up Diablo Swing Orchestra. They're a Swedish avant-garde metal band that takes heavy influences big band swing and cabaret with very catchy songs like "A Tap Dancer's Dilemma", "Balrog Boogie" and the more recent "Knucklehugs (Arm Yourself)" :)
Saw this and had to check it out. Went ahead and subbed to see what all you have planned for future reactions. I would suggest a few but heard you are not as much into the heaver stuff.. bands like Possessed, Slayer, Hades, Cyclone, Kreator, and even some harder stuff. I could suggest lighter stuff such as Ghost.. not sure yet what you have heard or what you do or do not like per se. I will, however, stick to this video's topic of Primus.. and suggest 'Tommy the Cat' as your next Primus reaction.
Thanks for watching and the suggestions. Ed likes it hard, the harder the better 😂 In all seriousness, I like some of the harder stuff, so will look into them. 🤘
I’d be interested to know who their influences were... Not my impression of Primus either. Cookie Monster, me too! It may seem weird, but it kinda reminds me of Sugar Ray, in that it is very original.
Primus is one of those bands like The Police. By which I mean that people of all genres like them. A metal guy will be like “yea I like funk I listen to primus.” And a punk or prog guy will be like “yea I listen to metal, I like primus”.
Hi guys, I know I'm years late to respond and probably won't be new info, but..... You spoke of thrash sound.. les and Larry actually had a band that was thrash sound.. BLIND ILLUSION. Check out the album THE SANE ASYLUM.
I've been a fan since I was an awkward youth, 1995 was the year, Tales From the Punchbowl was the album a young classmate introduced me to a cassette of these fine fellows and my life changed forever. You guys gotta see if you haven't already their Videoplasty tour video when they ended up back home in Petaluma, CA that was their hay day of absolute ripping even though Tim Alexander wasn't the drummer in 1997/1998 during the Brown Album release Brian Brain Mantia was an excellent drummer for the band during this period in their evolution. I really recommend reviewing their live version of "Tommy the Cat" during this Videoplasty live performance, it is the rippingist rendition you've ever seen. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/iSJKUXzv7HY/v-deo.html
Primus is awesome. 🤟 your vids look good btw. Good sound, nice setup. If you need more subs, try some finnish symphonic metal, Nightwish - romanticide (live from wacken). Its best version of that song by far. They have also a huge "army" of reaction followers.
Please do mo’ Primus, they suck! I’d recommend you react to anything off first two Primus albums, Frizzle Fry and Suck On This. I saw Primus in ‘91 with Tad, who is also worth checking out. Jinx, 3 D Witch Hunt & Sex God Missy are my favorites
Dog will hunt🤘
Steamy!

Back in 1990 I got a bootleg copy of Suck on This. That week I bought a bass and have been playing ever since.
Show him more primus! Their old school stuff that got them big.
John the fisherman, to defy the laws of tradition, groundhogs day
Tommy the Cat!
Too many puppies 🐶
And Fish On...American Life...and everything else they do....Toys Go Winding Down....even Have A Cigar.
No one rips like they do. No one.

Primus also played with Buckethead "guest starring" - those are awesome to watch.

Nice comment. No cease and desist order, but what guy wouldn't be a sucker for the overalls with no shirt look?!🤘

Smirked right when Les starts to sing!

When primus first came out me an my friends were blown away
"It's not a formula song..." Oh ya...no, cuz it's stock car or NASCAR? right?
There's also a lot of influence from The Residents ... also in the videos

the Residents, Rush, Larry Graham, Tony Levin, YES, and Jerry Reed. just a few ive seen Les mention in various interviews
King Crimson is also an influence

"A nerdy Adam Levine"
Oh man the king crimson influence is evident but I look more to frank zappa as their big deal

Primus is the greatest band to grace human ears.
