- Fat Cyclist Vs Sa Calobra
I'm the first person to admit that I am heavy cyclist and because of this one reason, I have avoided riding up the legendary climb of Sa Calobra on Mallorca.....until now.

Fair play. Non cyclists will never understand how hard it is climbing mountains. especially in heat. Chapeau sir
and also cyclists can't unterstand how difficult it must be to go up this mountain with this body weight.
Guys, just go there by boat port de soller to sa calobra is approx. 1 hour, no decent and you get to cycle back to port de soller which is a nice trip too.
That made me a bit teary, Leonard. The photobomb was quite special and the touch on the shoulder and what sounded like words of encouragement from a stranger were moving. That little extra push always helps. Proud of you. Congratulations.
Thanks Shannon.
I also found the riders on Mallorca to be universally friendly and helpful. Short anecdote: After returning from Sa Calobra back to Pollensa, I'd been chasing my son (we had matching club kit) for a few miles but he hooked up with a pair of junior riders and were gunning it. I'd had enough, and as we were nearing home I sat up and let them go off. Next thing, I felt a hand on my back and a Spanish rider pushed me back onto the group before departing with a cheery wave. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was turning off half a mile further up, but I still very much appreciated the gesture. Likewise, on every tough climb we did, riders that passed me (sad to say, there were more than a few!) all gave a friendly hello and often a few words of encouragement as they went by. It cannot be understated how much this helps to revive flagging legs, especially on some of the longer climbs, and I never stopping being enchanted by it.
Can't wait to return!
You did amazingly. Love your positive attitude. My head takes over on climbs and my mind tells me to stop. You’ve inspired me to keep battling 😊
Climbing beyond 8-9% gets painful real quick, even on lowest gear on my MTB. Below that, it's about finding a suitable rythm, keeping cadence high to relieve strain on knees, varying gears as the steepness naturally varies. At some point, my mind too starts creating ever more compelling reasons to stop. I pushed a bit too hard yesterday, and felt a real longing for the summit and the bite of chocolate and water I was going for.
Super impressive mate. You're an inspiration. Previously competed in strongman and managed to work my way up to 136kg, been on the bike commuting around 11 miles each way a few times a week for the last month and seeing stuff like this makes me want to keep going!
All the best.
As a heavy rider, I know how hard that must have been for you, huge well done for getting up there! The whole trip has been amazing to see.
This was award winning stuff. Your commentary in the midst of the climb actually inspires.
Forget the Coronation. This is what people should watch this weekend. Long live King Leonard.
Thanks Gordon.
Honesty and humility are your hallmarks; hats off to you.
Awesome 🚴♀️
Just came back from Mallorca. Best place to road cycle in the world. The real heroes are all of those riders with weight issues! Both physically and morally! Shout out!
You mate are an inspiration. The things you achieve just by going out and riding your bike. None of this 'you've got to have the latest kit/gear' or a 10k bike. Just with good old enjoyment the achievements will come.
You've certainly inspired me to get back on the bike after a long lay off & sign up for an event ride. Not to win or get a fast time (it's a charity ride) but to just get out there, enjoy it & have the sense of achievement that comes with just doing it.
Thanks mate & no doubt I'm not the only person you've inspired with your channel 🖤
Very inspirational and very well shot. It actually feels like the viewer is making the ascent with you, such is the atmosphere you create.
You must be very proud and certainly one for the memory banks. Chapeau ...
I just watched something that has truly inspired me. That attitude at the beginning told me you were ready for this, it left me no doubt. Then to watch you do it with your friends, well that made my day! Thank you.
Brilliant video. I love your honesty about your cycling. Keep up the good work. Full respect to you.
Thanks for sharing…. You captured exactly how I feel when I tackle big climbs…. Cheers.
Leonard! You did absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!!! It's not an easy climb.. but how beautiful is it? Super happy you finally did it! Well done. I'm in Mallorca if you're still around! Be great to have a brew :)
Thanks Katie, as you know it’s quite a climb. I also think I let it’s reputation put me off a bit as well. Sadly, I’m no longer in Mallorca but it would have been wonderful to have met up. Hopefully at some point.
Probably the best UA-cam video I've seen this year.. Chapeau
That’s made my day. Thanks Brian.
We all stand to learn a lot from you. Fantastic work, what an accomplishment!! 🎉
Well Done Leonard! thanks for sharing this challenge with us, inspiring!!
Well done Leonard, great climb, great video. Thanks for sharing.🤗🚲😎👍
Well bloody done, Leonardo! Brought back memories of the Umbria/Tuscany trip in September, '22. I remember those grinds...then the beer at the top!
Thanks Kevin. I’m in Italy right now.
Fair play Leonard! I'm heading out in a few weeks to tackle the climb, I found your video looking for motivation, job done. Well done, and thank you!
Totally brilliant, my hearty congrats on this Royal day of days. A first rate achievement. I can totally empathise this climb. I hope to get to Majorca from south France this autumn for a first cycling visit. For me in the hardest moments I just focus on keeping the wheels turning at whatever low speed I can manage...keeping breathing under control. And thinking of the exhilaration ahead when it is all over.
So happy for you Leonard! I can understand the trepidation, tis is a great springboard to take on other climbs in the future!
Chapeau Leonard you conquered something you never thought you could do after 20 years and never gave up you will inspire many people.
I did the the climb in March and got a bit emotional and shed a few tears afterwards such an iconic climb.
Well done and thanks for sharing your story 💪👏👏👏🚴♂️😎👍
Great video Leonard! Amazing effort, and you did it, what an accomplishment, love it.
Oh my god!!! this video is brilliant, this is just the inspiration that I need I was never a fan of climbing until now, but I now know what I must do so thank you for sharing this...........
Well done, your videos were my inspiration to get back on a bike after more than thirty years, thank you
Glad you are back on the bike. Enjoy!
I see myself as a cyclist covered in "whale muscle" more than a fat cyclist. Lol. I have been avoiding all hills and then you post this...time to cl8mb my fears. Great video
I like that. Yes, definitely time to face your climbing fears.
Awesome ride Leonard. I have done that climb a few times and it’s both a physical & mental battle. Well done 👏
Great inspiration, thanks for the video and congratulations on the climb 🙌
Thanks for sharing a great video of the climb, very inspirational
Great effort. Level road is great, but I do love a good climb. Did a 35km / 400m workout yesterday, and need both today and tomorrow to recover, before doing some light cycling on Monday :-) You did a great job psychologically, chugging along against pain and against the looming hill!
Chapeau! Nothing can describe the feeling of conquering something so iconic. I think I detected a little bit of a cheeky grin on your face as the realization dawned that you’d done it! Well done.
Brilliant effort Leonard. Congrats on completing Sa Calobra. It's not for the faint hearted!
Thanks Cameron, it certainly isn’t but it’s definitely one to tick off the bucket list!
Absolutely fantastic. Stumbled upon this channel and I’ll definitely subscribe. Very motivating 👍
Awesome achievement 😊 Well done and a brilliant video to boot. You’re an inspiration to many including me. Thank you
Fantastic effort. Those hairpin turns looked especially steep. Magnificent scenery, wow, what a ride.
Two of the hairpins at the top were very steep indeed.
Awesome effort Leonard. Best one yet! I knew you could do it 🏆💪
That was awesome to watch.
I have been mountain biking for 33 years now and JUST picked up road biking, this is very inspiring
Chapeau!! Amazing effort and very inspiring!
Chapeau! I’ve done it, it’s incredibly tough. Super effort mate
Really appreciate your determination and dedication, well done Leonard 🎉, well done mate
Well done Leonard, a great achievement. I've done it a couple of times, the last in 2019 at 72. Rode there and back from Puerta Pollensa and did the climb in 73 minutes.
Well done and congratulations! A few years ago I was at a spinning class and saw a video of Sa Calobra. I didn't even own a racing bike then, but dreamed of riding there. Now I've done it three times. Every time from Palma city. Maybe there will be another time. This gave me inspiration.
Great video Leonard and very well done on achieving this...even harder having to give your commentary. hope you had a well earned beer after.
Brilliant effort Leonard, well done 👏 bucket list climb ticked off 👍
Excellent Leonard and beautifully filmed as always.
Another inspirational ride! thanks for sharing :)
What a victory for you!! I am older than you and heavier than you, yet you are my inspiration to get back out on my bike after a 20 year+ hiatus. Well done my friend, well done.
Leonard… I hit like before I watched the video because I already know it’s gonna be another great one. I just finished my own daily ride.
Great effort and determination. Keep up the good work 👏👏
Ah you absolute legend!! Well done & thanks for the motivation!
Inspirational! Congratulations and thanks for the video.
Next level video. Thanks for putting so much effort
Fantastic stuff! Cheers Leo.
Well done. Really admire the determination and positive outlook.
Brilliant is all I can say brilliant as a fellow bigger rider I felt your pain going up that hill and was delighted to see you make it to the top you can do any ride now brilliant
Many congratulations. Great effort. That looked and felt tough. I chickened out of it last year but you have inspired me to go for it at the next opportunity. Hats off to you sir ❤🤗
Great effort, mate. Definitely earned my subscription! 👍
Quality effort. I did it last Monday and it's a very tough but beautiful climb. Well done.
Great video and well done! I rode it with my son a month or so ago and I can very much relate to the "maybe the road will be closed" feeling! You want to ride it, but you know it will be tough. In the end, the road was open and the ride was fantastic! We rode early morning (7am depart from Pollensa!) but even then there were riders out and you get loads of support from others on the climb, with cheery, friendly shouts of encouragement all of the way up. A wonderful climb and surely one of the most amazing roads in the world - definitely a box ticked! Nice one :-)
Chapeau Mr Lee!!! You did it!!! Mahussive challenge that you’ve completed & it goes to show that it’s doable; inspirational!!!
Well done. I did it years ago (in my glory days), Absolutely brutal. Your film really captured how beautiful Majorca is for cycling.
Amazing stuff 👏👏. You are an inspiration 🤝
Absolutely fantastic effort Leonard 👏👏
Absolutley outstanding effort. Well done 👏🧡
Brilliant Leonardo, superb vlog, well done mate. Did it last year and was tough but rewarding. Well done and well filmed as well
It was definitely rewarding
Really great to have watched that. You are as much of an inspiration as ever. Wishing you all the best
Thanks Boruch, it was a tough ride but I felt fantastic when I had done it.
Super! Great job Leon!
Seen you were on the island when I was, was hoping to bump into you but didn’t happen, love your content keep up the good work 👍
This is a great video, you really have given a different side of cycling, its always seems to be cylcing videos with glory & epic rides, views, this is probably the first video I've ever watched which truly resonates with the real ordinary cyclist..well done Sir 🎉🎉
Finnaly good youtube recommendation for a video worth watching big respect keep going 💪
Congratulations!! You have done it !!🎉 I’m from mallorca and sa calobra is in my bucket list !
Absolutely fantastic effort plus a great video
Well done Leonard brilliant effort and content 👏.
Absolute hero. Well done boss, amazing effort!
What a legend, first time I’ve stumbled across your channel and I’ve instantly subbed
Glad you liked the video and I really appreciate the sub.
Hugely impressive. You truly are the ELOD! MASSIVE kudos Leonard.
Chapeau Leonard. I did that 7 years ago. Can’t imagine doing it now, knee says no! Great achievement. Lori
Thanks for your videos Leonard, they keep me entertained on days that i cannot ride. As a heavy rider myself i was wondering how many drinks, type of food you would take out on a long ride. Thanks Leonard. 🚲🚲🚲
Very inspiring. Thanks for the video.
You are an inspiration!
We are going to be in France riding in June (live in the USA).
Nothing like that in the US, but really looking forward to biking in Europe again.
We a doing 3 ride all relative easy.
Normandy
Loire Valley Bike & Barge
Seyssel to Lyon
But we are in our 70s and we really enjoy riding in Europe.
Love watching you ride Leonard. Great videos!
That was an awesome effort. Well done.
Chapeau, great video. Excellent achievement 👏
Kudos Leonard, excellent effort 👍👍
Inspirational Leonard. Bloody brilliant effort.
WELL DONE! Such an incredible road. My wife and I stayed in Soller a few years ago. Rode from Soller up Puig Major. Did Sa Calobra and back. Death bed memory.
Good work! Great video!
Hello Leonard,
Congratulations on beating the climb, excellent stuff.
Take care.
Paul,,
Just shows what can be achieved with a positive mindset, very inspiring, well done & thanks for sharing 👍
Awesome dude! Nice way achieving your goal.
That's very inspiring!, Leonard, very well done! I don't use to comment on UA-cam videos, but this deserves it, being a cyclist myself I know how hard those climbs can be, specially Sa Calobra; I've been to Mallorca in the last 2 weeks to do the Mallorca 167 km and didn't take my chances at Sa Calobra; you inspired me to face the challenge next time I'm there. All the best to you!
man, that smile at the end... - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS! CONGRATULATIONS man! I was "pushing" with you ;-)
This is amazingly inspiring! ❤ Thank you for sharing and showing us that even if overweight people can do incredible things
Awesome effort!! Thank you for sharing, congrats!!
Glad you liked it.
Fantastic effort..that must of been tough both physically and mentally…nailed it👏🏻👏🏻🚴🏻♂
The hard bit mentally is bringing yourself to ride down knowing that you will only have to turn around and ride back up again.
As a regular visitor to your channel I send you a great respect. I am a heavy rider, too, and I climbed Alpe d´Huez, Stelvio twice and several other mountains on my bike. I know, what it means to go up a hill with a little additional weight. Again, chapeau, my friend...
well done Leonard as another heavy cyclist that is something I could only dream about, chapeau.
Great video, love Oscars description...going up is hard..😅. Well done.
Well done Leonard does not matter how long you took you got to the top, and proves what can be achieved by a rider not in the 1st flush of youth.
Thats the beauty of this climb, once you go down, there's no way out other than back up. Good effort!
