Yeah indeed I saw a few little trinkets that I think could look lovely. One of the rooms has a chest in which looks in surprisingly good condition so I will need to get that out and have a proper good look at it. You can't beat the old kitchenware it was made so much better back then 🤗

Hey little heads up….we use mole soil mounds as it is great for aiding growth, as it has beneficial microbes in the soil, the plastic bags that you buy soil in are useful to keep the soil in ,cut open one side only at the top of the bag .multi use instead of single use ….better for you and your land …the planet in general. Congratulations on your progress and inspirational “can do “ethos ✨🎯
That's awesome. From now on then I will be collecting it. Is it good for seedlings or for mature plants. I love tips like this thankyou so much soapy 🧼🫧
Thanks so much we both had lovely birthdays. I showed my mum the messages and she was blown away by how many people wished her a nice day, thankyou and have a lovely weekend 🙏🏻
If you immediately put on a new roof and address that wall that’s pulling away, you would have stabilized it for awhile and could put all the floors back slowly. If that isn’t done immediately, you will lose the house altogether.❤️🐝🤗
Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Catch it before it becomes a massive issue. Thanks for the kind words it's definitely persuaded me too act soon. Have a great weekend 😄💪
Having a set plan, a check list of everything that needs doing and the order in which they need to be done would help. If it were my property I'd gut the entire house and barn. Have all the debris removed so you can see the walls, find the load bearing walls, then work from there. Starting with a good foundation first, then walls, then a roof. Out of curiosity, why does Sophie have or need a horse? Wow, so much to do. There will come a time when you'll look back to this video and remember how far you've come. As others have said, you have a vision, you're both very young, and time is on your side. Looking forward to seeing the plans for these future project homes. Take good care of yourselves and Walt ~ 🤗💝 Lacy, Mike & Hamish🐾
Yeah I think that's the plan once the cowshed is done it'll be full force ahead with those building i cant wait! 🤗🤗🤗 Sophia has always loved horses and it's her passion this horse she has now she rescued from a terrible place and the horse was weeks off death and she recovered her to be able to compete and live her best life so we want to retire her here in Portugal and give her her best days. Thanks so much for all the advice 🙏🏻🤗
@@escapetothequinta We had an idea Sophie might be rescuing the horse. Pray tell the sweet horse's name. We might even predict once the houses are finished and funds are more plentiful, you guys just might rescue more animals living in distress. It would be a beautiful thing to do. Take care, be well ~ xoxo Lacy
Thankyou so much Lacy. The horse is called Firefly bit fly for short and the rescue we are also getting is called fortuna..... But I'm going to call it Tuna haha. And yes I will get 2 ewes in spring and some chickens very soon and then we will make space to rescue any animals that need there forever home. I would love to rescue a donkey 🤗
@@escapetothequinta You guys are so loving. An animal sanctuary sounds wonderful. I do know that donkeys need to live in pairs. Not sure why but that's what I was told. All the best on animal enclosures and shelters. 🤗🐎🐎
Yes if taken from a herd they can go crazy alone however if they have always been alone they would buddy up nicely with our 2 horses. I don't know why but I love them such great peaceful creatures 😍
The potential looks great, maybe get the help of an architect because they will think of things that you probably wouldn't even know about then make your decision and stick to it
Yes I need to spend a good day clearing the area around them. Giving them space to breathe and stopping the brambles from choking them also I can get to the vines then easier 🙏🙏🙏
David, thank you so very much for this weeks vlog !!! First off, love, love Walt! Such a beautiful Dalmatian 😊. Second, the trip to Tomar, so grateful for the chance to see the cathedral and the lake. It is 91 degrees F here in Marietta, GA, so would have loved to have jumped into the clear water there! Your property looks perfect for adding your horse. Hope he/she will be ok with Walt. And finally, Happy Birthday to your mum and on Sunday, the same to you! Your mum has an awesome son😊.
Walt is adorable isn't he. Glad you like Tomar whenever we go places now maybe I'll bring the camera to show you the area we are in 😁 ahh you are in Georgia I've been there quite a lot I've travelled the east coast of America quite some times so would always start my adventures there. Beautiful place in the world 🌎
I have seen a lot worse places then your recovered and made very livable. With the roof and floors collapsing actually will make it easier to take down. The main thing to protect is the rock walls from getting rain from the top as it will wash out the clay/dirt that the walls were originally built with. I would like to give you one piece of advise as you have the pine trees all around you property and that is watching Walt with processionary caterpillar's as they can be deadly.
Thanks 🙏🏻 yeah the caterpillars are usually about Feb - may depending on when they nest but we have been okay here they must not like those type of pine trees but we plan to plough a trench around them every year so if there are any caterpillars they go straight into the ground as that's all they are looking for is soft dirt to crawl into. Its the main reason I made th fence around garden so walt isn't up there sniffing all the time haha thankyou for the care though as it is a big problem over here. ☺️
I'm sure your missing Sophia, but she ll be home soon😊your tidy up looks great and your cottage is beautiful and the walls just beautiful your both doing so well down on the farm 😊take care and God bless
Thanks Mo lots of work ahead but your right the walls are what made me want the place which sounds silly but I can just see them all done and beautiful 🙏🏻
Wow! The cleaning you’ve done really looks amazing 🤩 also you have quite the abundance of fruit growing. 🎉🎉🎉 nice thanks for the tour of the house. Yes, you can restore the old house. I’ve seen it on the channel, Portugal on a postcard, just to name one channel. It’s a work progress but it’s very doable. I see its potential.
Thankyou. Those guys love super close to us I need to go and visit them soon. Fruit is doing well I can't wait to start eating it all hahah have a lovely weekend 🤗🤗🤗
Dave, and Sophia, I have been watching every week since your friends at the Indie Projects recommended your channel. I am so glad that they did! One comment however and I think it is because of MY ears, but Dave, because of the British dialect and the rapidity of your speech, I cannot follow all the words. I get clues for what you are saying because of the visuals- but your speech is just a bit too fast for me to understand clearly. Thank you for all your work creating the videos for all of us to enjoy! Laura, Oak Park, Michigan USA
Oh, renovation- definitely. if you have the determination and stamina for the job--do it. I watched for several years- from raking away the rat nests in the thick, filthy hay floor-smashing up the concrete floor -- to replacing the roof and a couple years more work in addition to that, Theo and Bea finally did it. Go for it--we will be cheering you on!
Sorry I will take this on board and speak a lot slower. When I get excited about something I get faster and faster haha trust me next video should be easier to hear 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I think the property has potential and like you said you have lots of time to make it as you would like it. Neglected properties need a young couple to bring them back to life. Every step of the way you will be increasing the value and creating your new home.
Thanks for the tour. To me there’s lots of great reusable items and some lovely doors. Are you planning to possibly rescue some of the pieces or are they all ruined by the wet?
Yes I would love to recover as much as possible. I would love for once it's done for people to think it was a well preserved Portuguese house and not just a modern build you know 🤗🤗🤗
Your Olive trees are quite old, you need to keep the base of the trees free from suckers that shoot up, just prune them off. I had a grove of 900 Olive trees in Western Australia, they were just sticks when I planted them, in their third year they started to produce, they normally produce a good crop one year and a very big crop the next. By the fifth year our small trees gave us just on 80 litres of oil. Look after your trees and they will give you much more oil than you will be able to use. Also keep the grass away from the base of the trees, and on fruit trees keep them fairly clear out to the drip line. (edge of the overhanging branches) hope that helps.
@@escapetothequinta Our Olive trees were Manzanillo and Frantoio for oils and Kalamata for eating, but in the beginning we crushed them all for oil. We sold up after 8 years, but went back to collect 20 Lt drum of oil for a few years after, but we still couldn't get through that much in a year. I cannot tell you what the trees produced by the time they were mature.
Think it may be a little late to plant winter potatoes. Should they have been planted in march at the latest in April . All the trees are looking great. I've only got a small space for growing vegetables and fruits love to have about half of an acre to grow on. Thanks for showing the house, think I've watched all your videos but have never seen the inside
Half an acre is loads I think that's about the space I will be using I think the horses will have most of the land hahah. Have you ever read a book John Seymour the complete guide to self sufficiency it's a really good book about smallholding and gardening 😊😊😊
Heya Dave, nice tour that was of Tomar, great little city! The house looks do-able, I would keep the outside stone structure and take out everything else to start with. All the wood and structure looks to be rotten anyway. Can you rent skips in the area? Will be exciting to see the horse finally arriving. Have a great week you two!!! Cheers Bert
Yeah all the wood is completely knackered I think the roof needs to come off and get the structure safe with a ring beam and then start to reintroduce the floors back in 🙏🏻
Masya Allah the place is really beautiful, very calm, like there are no humans at all. Is it really like that, or is it only crowded with people on certain days? I hope one day I can go there. I like ancient buildings like that
It is generally very very quiet on market days there is a bit more activity but so much more quieter then big cities. We went to Nazare beach yesterday and there was no one else there haha I will post something on Instagram to show you. If you like ancient building you will love central Portugal 😁😁😁
It is so nice to see the progress. Your hard work in clearing and flattening the garden is goin gto pay off in a few weeks when the growth kicks in. Nice coverage of the Castle and Convento too!
Happy birthday 🎉 to Mom from me and my wife. Hope she 's having a blessed day. And that rain came just in time for your veggie plant's. 😊 And God watered it for you. 🙏Saved you a bit of time there.🙌
Ahhh awesome I'll be a pessimist and say it's a 10:1 ratio then. That way I need 300kg to get the amount of oil I want hahahah thanks for the advice Bob 🙏🙏🙏
Very soon that's what I'm going to be working on this week, it's been hard with having Sophia not here and visitors coming along side some other work to do but full steam ahead now 🙏🏻
You can save the house!Informative stone house renovations on utube: nearby veggies; the Quinta; real Algarve living; Martijn Doolaard; raising voyagers; back in Portugal with Joaquin Conde; Portugal it is; stories from the cascina; Mr & Mrs adventure; Maya Feliz. Different styles, different budgets…Best Wishes!
Unless you have stacks of cash hidden away, will you have enough money to do both buildings? I like the barn building. Could look amazing and very modern-rustic. The house looks a little more traditional and, I don't know, is it worth it? May be beyond hope. The Newbys knocked down one of their destroyed houses. They are planning to rebuild it, but there's no limit to what you can decide to do. You don't have to restore everything - depends on how you want to live. Could turn the basement bits into garages and storerooms.
I will get some quotes but I really don't know yet but you are right I like your way of thinking. Not everything has too be done and we have quite a large urban plot so we could maybe set the house back in the future if we wanted too. Lots of food for thought 🤔. Thanks for the advice and help though makes me think from different perspectives 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@escapetothequinta I bet it feels like quite a conundrum. And there is the issue of enjoying life as well! Maybe there's a temporary solution for the roof while you decide, like a big roof tarp.
Yeah haha a bit plaster haha your right we have some choices to make indeed thanks for the advice though really helps us focus out attention in the right direction 🙏🏻
Haha they slept downstairs and upstairs was where the hay was. There used to be a hole in the floor where the hay was pushed down..... Though now you have me thinking of cows tip toeing up the stairs hahahaha. Thanks for commenting have a lovely weekend 🤗
Just on your rant about the string shouldn't associate all farmers dumping there string in the ground as we recycle all our string which can now be used to make new do some research.
Hiya, no I'm not tarnishing everyone with the same brush I super respect anyone that recycles. I just can't believe how much of it there was. Surely a biodegradable twine could be used. But I suppose that may not work as well in bailer machines. At horse yards I see so much in with the piles of hay to compost its mad. Really glad you recycle too. If everyone does there but the planet becomes much better. Thanks for commenting bud, keep up the good work 🙏🙏🙏🤗
be good 4 u when u can get on with small house to live in ,yes so much potential ,for u both ,but ejoy it and do stuff when u have time n money like u say ,get roof on ur shower next lolllllx
I don't know how much you paid for your property but probably too much??? Let's see: good arable land with a water source such as a well, is worth 1 Euro per sq meter, the ruined house is worth very little, maybe around 5,000 Euros, the fact that it is registered as urban article (for habitation) gives you the right to renovate it for habitation, without having to get planning permission, so a saving of at least 5,000 Euros on an architect project, but you'll always need a building license (licença de obra) to start the renovation works, not expensive that one, around 300 Euros. The barns will be worth 3,000 Euros tops. If the location is good, acess by tarmac road, close to Tomar let's say not more than 10 to 15 km to town center, it will be worth a bit more. The closer to Tomar or a train station the more value. (Many residents of Tomar work in Lisbon and commute by train). As for renovating vs new build: renovating such a ruin will be MORE EXPENSIVE than demolishing it and building a brand new home, believe me!!! That's why the portuguese don't renovate, they prefer building new. Cost of new build with all fees, architect, energy efficiency requirements, etc, is between 1,000 and 1,500 Euros per sq meter. Two floors of say 60 sq meters each = 120 sq meters. The advantages of a brand new build is that it will be a well insulated home, energy efficient, confortable , better built, almost maintenance free, etc. And... it will be worth a lot more than your total costs as soon as it is finished. Good investment. The advantages of renovating = none, as it will always have lots of problems that cannot be solved, such as damp, cold, not energy efficient, disconfort, dark inside etc. About the olives: if the fly does not get to them and spoil the harvest, you'll need 10 kgs of olives to provide 1 litre of olive oil. If you don't have enough olives on your trees, you can ask around as many owners don't bother to pick theirs = too much work for little return, so they may let you pick their olives for free. Just ask. Check with them where is the nearest mill, you'll need to take all your olives in one go and have a minimum weight if you want them to be pressed separately, so you'll get the oil of your own. To pick them all in a few days, you may need a lot of help... at around 10 Euros an hour for farmhands, but don't expect to find anyone free during olive harvest season. Prepare yourselves to work from sunrise to sunset, non-stop. Welcome to my homeland! I'm from Tomar area. Which municipality are you in?
We managed to negotiate a very good deal. I'm not sure you'll find any houses for 5000 euros around here not even the half fallen down ones by agriloja and in regards to land we are interested in getting more but never do we see it at that price. That being said we are close to Tomar so the prices are good there. I understand what you mean about new vs renovation as it gives you a fresh chance to do it all from scratch. Sophia is Portuguese so we always planned to move back to her homeland 🤗 have a lovely week.
Wow I love your 🏡❤
Cheers dude I really want to start the work on it before it crumbles hahah. I think a ring beam and some concrete structures in the corners should hopefully tie it all together again 😕😀😀💪
if you have voles/moles, you would have to stick hardware cloth down to stop them from eating all things planted
Thankyou!!!!! Can they not get through that? I was told I would need to use metal too? ,😅😄😄😄
it is usually a thin gauge, small gapped, wired 'cloth'
Ahhhhhh yes I will have to use this in all the raised beds ☺️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Hey little heads up….we use mole soil mounds as it is great for aiding growth, as it has beneficial microbes in the soil, the plastic bags that you buy soil in are useful to keep the soil in ,cut open one side only at the top of the bag .multi use instead of single use ….better for you and your land …the planet in general.
Congratulations on your progress and inspirational “can do “ethos ✨🎯
That's awesome. From now on then I will be collecting it. Is it good for seedlings or for mature plants. I love tips like this thankyou so much soapy 🧼🫧
I love your vlogs and following all of your hard work. 🎂 Happy Birthday. 🎈 ❤
Thankyou so so much we are looking at some better microphones soon so hopefully the sound becomes better for you. Have a lovely week 🤗💖🤗
Be sure to grade where the water runs away from the house!
Yeah a little French drain or a gulley at least to divert it is a great idea thanks Gerry 🙏🏻
Happy Birthday! To ur Mom or Mum as well!!❤❤❤
Thanks so much we both had lovely birthdays. I showed my mum the messages and she was blown away by how many people wished her a nice day, thankyou and have a lovely weekend 🙏🏻
Re voles: continue to use raised beds with 1" square hardware wire across the bottom so animals can't get through.
Awesome thanks for the advice. Are voles solitary or will there be loads of them? I need to google what they even look like hahaha thankyou 🙏🏻
Voles, we called it field mice. Make use of traps to catch them. Granny South Africa
Here in US, there's never just one.
Ahhhh hopefully they don't eat everything hahah
They do eat everything. They are a pest. You must try to get rid of it. Please take off the ivy from your trees. They will kill all of your trees.
@@escapetothequinta You’re most welcome! And thank you for letting us tag along on your adventures.❤️🐝🤗
More then welcome love the comments really focussing us to think about all the wonderful ideas you have ☺️☺️☺️☺️
@@escapetothequintaThank you so much! That makes me happy❤️🤗🐝
☺️☺️☺️
Happy Birthday on sunday , have the same on Sunday
Thanks so much it's funny I'm a year older but feel a year younger being here there must be something in the air hahab 😁
Happy happy birthday and many more🎉❤
I hope so hahah I think the Portugal good food and oil will give me a few extra ones 😂
Sophia has always loved horses and it's her passion this horse she has now she rescued from a terrible place and the horse was weeks off death and she recovered her to be able to compete and live her best life so we want to retire her here in Portugal and give her her best days. Thanks so much for all the advice 🙏🏻🤗
@@escapetothequinta
We had an idea Sophie might be rescuing the horse.
@@escapetothequinta
You guys are so loving.
Great idea for the front of your house
Thankyou 🙏🙏🙏💪
The potential looks great, maybe get the help of an architect because they will think of things that you probably wouldn't even know about then make your decision and stick to it
That's true they may come up with ideas that could make the most of the shape and size of the property 😁😁😁 thankyou
Are you planning on getting rid of all those weeds and brambles by the pear trees. It would help them
Yes I need to spend a good day clearing the area around them.
Beautiful place in the world 🌎
Feliz cumpleaños 💚🎂💚..disfruta de tu mamá.
Thankyou very much. We had a lovely day. Horses coming very very soon 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Happy birthday 🎈🎂
Thanks so much. It was lovely having a birthday over here. Me and my mum went to the beach ⛱️
Lots and lots of work
Just and little at a time
You will get there 🤗
Yep indeed one step at a time. Thanks 🙏🏻
Thankyou so much I really think it could be stunning 😻
Oh wow what awesome advice thankyou so so much. 900 olive trees that's amazing. What was the most oil you ever got in a season? 😊
Wow such an achievement though you should be proud ☺️☺️☺️
We visited Tomar a few years ago no camera or video can do it justice , happy birthday to your mom and happy birthday to you from Cannock chase
Its lovely isn't it. Cannock Chase wow that's lovely there I've been on a few dog walks and bike rides there ☺️😁☺️
Think it may be a little late to plant winter potatoes.
Cheers Bert
Yeah all the wood is completely knackered I think the roof needs to come off and get the structure safe with a ring beam and then start to reintroduce the floors back in 🙏🏻
@@escapetothequinta Yeah, definitely the roof and all floors and beams, good thinking on the ring beam to get a solid structure!
Yeah get it all nice and stable I'm a heavy guy haha 🤣
I'll be using your tool soon to trim the brambles they grow faster than any thing I've ever seen hahaha. Congrats on the 🚗
@@escapetothequinta brambles, wisteria, oat grass, purslain, dandelions, broom....our perpetual nemeses!
I know right grrrr
Happy birthday 🎉 to Mom from me and my wife. Hope she 's having a blessed day. And that rain came just in time for your veggie plant's. 😊 And God watered it for you. 🙏Saved you a bit of time there.🙌
Thankyou so much. Yes the rain came down at the perfect time. All part of the master plan. I was very very thankful for it 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🤗
I’ve seen other UA-camrs in Portugal require 5-to-9 kg/liter.
Ahhh awesome I'll be a pessimist and say it's a 10:1 ratio then. That way I need 300kg to get the amount of oil I want hahahah thanks for the advice Bob 🙏🙏🙏
When are you going to finish your washroom?
Very soon that's what I'm going to be working on this week, it's been hard with having Sophia not here and visitors coming along side some other work to do but full steam ahead now 🙏🏻
28:55 My old girl .
Aww she was well looked after 🤗🤗🤗
@@escapetothequinta I she is in very good and wise hands
She will be looked after 🤗🤗🤗

yes re firb and make air b and b passive income❤❤❤❤❤
That would be nice wouldn't it hahah 🙏🏻🙏🙏🏻
29:53 29:57 You would have to get some help from an expert who could tell you if you can save this house
Yeah for sure I hope some pinning and a ring beam can tie it all...... Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Must ask why do you keep calling it a cow barn 🤷♀️, do you really think they climbed stairs to bed 🤣🤣🤣sorry tickles me ❤
Haha they slept downstairs and upstairs was where the hay was.
That's it. You've got to enjoy the process. Shower build will be fun even though it's going to be a bodge hahah 🤗
Just a suggestion…..Less chatter and more action. I lose interest with the prolonged talking. Otherwise, I do enjoy watching your homesteading
Thankyou I will do my best it'll be easier to crack on with things now Sophia is back haha 🙏🏻 have a lovely week
