The dampness is due to the stone not being able to breathe. The render or paint should be replaced with lime based plaster or paint which will solve this problem.
The kitchen is a room where a lot of vapor is produced, going upwards and condensing on the ceiling ( and the walls ) because the roof ( and the walls ) is ( are ) not insulated. Painting will not solve the mold, it may hide it for some time. Nice house, it was in my favorites on Idealista some months ago.
You are the fifth or six immigrants to Portugal I watch who renew old properties. Your house is architecturally so Portuguese. See Make Do Grow. Your houses are so alike in structure and problems.I love to watch what you do, how hard you work, and all you achieve.
Watching you guys for the 1st time & really enjoying the both of you. I did catch when you said, "I'd like to see more of myself", (referring to the mirror on the floor) & your very cute husband quickly snapped, "I would too"! How cute is he! PLEASE! Don't paint the ceiling in the salon, white! If you can't bare not to, take the time & whatever it cost to put white sheets on the ceiling & live with that for a little while. This room is maybe the most fabulous one in the house. Its stunning! As soon as you swipe a brush full of paint & it touches the ceiling,, the value of your property drops. White throw pillows (soft feather down) & a white throw will lighten things up a bit. Congrats on this spectacular home!! Cheers!
Wow. Thank you so much for your lovely comments! We're glad you like our humour 😁.. The wooden ceilings are actually already painted a dark colour ( just a thin pine wood) . For now we are leaving them dark but you have good suggestions there. Thank you very much 😊
@@TeaAndTinto Goodness, thank you for your thoughtful reply. Hah! to me! I got all fussy worrying about the ceiling when it already was painted! Happy trails!
Beautiful! What a find. I personally would probably switch the kitchen to the summer bedroom and make the little kitchen into a bedroom. A big Beautiful kitchen with large windows and sunlight would be awesome
Watching from New Zealand. What a privilege it is to be guided through your beautiful and historic home. I truky wish you all of life's richest blessings as you embark on this wonderful adventure together. What a wonderful team you are, with a fabulous sense of humour and honour. ❤️🙏❤️
Hi Anita and Milka, greetings from Arizona USA. Thank you for sharing your journey. I have been addictively watching videos of folks relocating to Europe with the thought of possibly doing so myself. I just found your channel and enjoyed watching you transforming your property. Thank you and best wishes.
1st bedroom would make a nice dressing room for the larger bedroom. Look very closely at condition of wood ceiling and floors for rot and wood worm. It’s a lovely home.
Дом очень интересный и таинственный... усадьба огромная, потребуется много труда, чтобы ее привести в порядок!!! Представляю, когда Вы закончите как это будет красиво и великолепно!!! Удачи Вам во всем!!! Геннадий, Россия.
Gosh I have so many questions. It is a lovely house. I must admit, I would be happy to leave the down stairs as it is. A bathroom to clean up in after being out in the garden for hours wouldn't be amiss. For any man, including my husband, all those downstairs rooms could work very well. One being an actual workroom, the others storage of equipment and tools. That must sound odd, but as you have so much space, it would be a nicer option (to me only) than having a whopping big shed out in the beautiful yard. You won't believe what came to mind as you showed us through. That long conservatory, would make a fabulous kitchen, handy to the beautiful big lounge area, fabulous outlook and perhaps the small current kitchen could be a laundry. Enough room to leave an ironing board set up, and have a bench for folding things, cupboards for typical laundry items. Just my thoughts. You have chosen well and the land looks lovely too. Best wishes from Australia.
Hi Shirley. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your ideas. They are great. You are right about the downstairs and up to now it has been so handy to have the space for tools and storage without having to build a storage shed elsewhere, so there's been no rush, but we are planning some layout changes now. Definitely need a place to clean up after gardening. I like your idea of the kitchen in the conservatory and we have seriously considered that. However the windows are a little too low for standard units. Thanks again for sharing your ideas. We're hoping to post a video soon with further thoughts about the ground floor. 😀
The stones used for those walls are enormous. Maybe you can turn the ground floor into a place for holiday rentals - I'm sure we would all love to come and visit and maybe give you a hand with your renovations. It is an amazing house and property - I love the garden. Good luck with your great adventure.
Gracious me, what a gorgeous building. I’m thinking you are both at a great age to actually finish this renovation/restoration and have a luxury home to live in. It’s big enough to let out the ground floor as a B&B for holiday makers. There is quite enough room upstairs for you and your family to visit. I think I’m a little envious 🧑🏻🎤… Wishing you both every happiness, lots of strength, and of course , myriads of patience.. Cheers from Australia 🌸🌸🌸🌸
Thank you for your lovely comments Lorraine. I hope you are right about our age as there is plenty to do. It's also true that there is enough space for visiting family and friends upstairs. We had visitors over from Australia at Christmas. 😁
I am a native, born in Figueira da Foz but live in the US for over 50 years. What a beautiful property with so many potential...I love big houses, I was born in a 5 bedroom house and now live in a 3 bedroom house...😂 The house has a charm, very pretty. A great hello from Portugal. Portugal is a great place and one of the safest Countries in the world. In the summer it is best to stay near the coast as it can be very hot. Pousadas de Portugal are a great place to stay and enjoy the good Portuguese cuisine. Thank you for subscribing.
What a lovely, charming and very large house. If you paint the ceilings white, i think, you will turn it into an ordinary home taking away some of the warmth and charm. You might regret it. Looking forward to seeing what you will do. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🙏
What a charming house! I see why you gravitated toward this property - it's lovely, with so many interesting features. It looks like a chapel/church from the front doors, then opens up like a butterfly!
What an amazing property and is in a very good condition, you have taken a big, task. Try to respect the character of the property. Thank you for showing this beautiful stone house
We're from Cape Town and we have a holiday apartment in Fuzeta, on the Algarve. We love Portugal. Fantastic weather all year around and no crime. Beautiful country.
That's a great idea and we have thought about it but our windows are a bit too low for standard kitchen units in the conservatory. But we are not ruling out the idea just yet. Thank you so much for the suggestion.😁
As a painter I concur. Painting the ceiling in the main kitchen dining lounge area would add lightness and transform that space .we have had timber ceilings in our old houses hear at home so have painted hundreds of them over the years .make sure you use an oil based undercoat to stop the varnish leaching through if you decide to paint. I suggest a low sheen top coat a slightly tinted shade of white to to take the harsh edge off plain white .love what you both are doing .definitely a labor of love .
That house is magnificent! The wooden slats floors are amazing. I would die to live there! I see why you had to have it I would have been the same way!
Hi from Sr Petersburg Florida. I love your home, you are so lucky to fine and enjoy. You have to dry the moldy ceiling or it will keep coming back. Mold is very dangerous to your health. It would be best to take it down and replace all that is wet. I know that cost a lot but your health is worth it. Please show more oy=f your gardens. Enjoy your home. 😊😊❤❤
Hi there in St Petersberg, Florida. Thank you very much for the lovely comments. You are right about mold but luckily our living and sleeping areas have none . Just need to focus on the other areas.
Hi, my name is Mary Caruso and I’m joining you from Canada. I can’t wait to see you both repairing this old home. I’m 75 years old and can’t imagine taking on a project like this.♥️🇨🇦♥️
Thank you Pamela for the lovely comments. I am definitely torn between painting white and keeping it traditional. Maybe in the future we'll do a test on a smaller room and see how it looks 🙂
What a beauriful home. You are so lucky to have the 3 wells and all the little canals for plants. I love the stone patio and all the spaces on the property you cleaned out. The stone walls inside are spectacular! Portugal is just so beautiful! Good luck with all your projects!
I've seen it!👌 I was a bit too quick to ask for a house tour then saw that there was a video 🙊 The house is very beautiful and will be even more beautiful when you have renovated more. Just this: I would paint the ceilings in a lighter color, regardless of whether they are original, I think a light color would make the rooms stand out even more beautifully 😍
I learned from a paint store that a light sanding by hand with a sanding block will knock the top off leaving a soft texture. IT WORKED FOR ME. Please try it before any pricy removal or scrapping. Hope this helps😌love your property. Ruth, Oregon USA.
What a delightful home with so many fun things you can do. May I suggest that you enjoy the suggestions, but in the end you need to be delighted with each space. If you want to lighten the living room ceiling, then lighten it. If you want to remove the sand paint then do so. After all, the journey to bringing your vision to life is what makes renovating an old home so enjoyable Two suggestions I would throw into the pot of considerations is to put in healing/cooling at least on the areas you spent most of your day time to enhance your living enjoyment. The second suggestion is to remove the ceiling in the kitchen and allow it to completely dry out, treat and remove any mold and then put back in a breathable ceiling. Mold can be very toxic for health. Have fun!
Thank you Gail for the suggestions. Really appreciate ideas we hadn't thought about 😁 and different perspectives. We spent several days scraping the sand paint in the conservatory. It's still textured but not sharp, so we can cope with that. However not looking forward to scraping all the other rooms 😂. It's definitely going to be slow going. We have thought about air conditioning for heating/cooling but are concerned about the look on the outside of the building. The kitchen ceiling is concrete we believe and should be ok once treated. Thank you very much for your input.
What a stunning house. The extension to your first floor lounge would once have been an outdoor terrace, I think. So hence the grand doorway and arched windows in the main room.
Congratulations on your new adventure!! If I was you I would move the kitchen into the biggest bedroom closer to the living room and dinning room. On the main floor, and make the kitchen your laundry room with a sink for DIY, soaking cloths and anything else you need.
Wow. Thank you so much Anabela. I really appreciate your suggestions. At the moment all the water input and waste is on the other side of the house so in the short term we need to leave it as it is, but we'll definitely consider it in the future. Thanks again 😀
The house is lovely. I love Escpecially the bathrooms with the very old sinks and Toilets. I suspekt that they were very high quality and expensive 😢 greetings from Germany 😊
Wow what an amazing house! Those cupboards in the bedroom are absolutely stunning. So much storage. The living room is remarkable and again stunning!!! What a gorgeous home. I can't wait to see what you are going to do with this house. More videos please!!! Cheers from Toronto
Consider the possibility that the outbuilding with the bread oven and metal chimney was the original kitchen or ‘cook house’. Many older houses, particularly up north, had detached kitchens as a safeguard from fires affecting the main house. My grandmother came from a village in Viseu and her parents’ house had this detached kitchen system and it was much much smaller and simpler than your beautiful place. 😊
Well done. Lots of progress so far and it looks like you have resolved a lot of the roof problems. It is a fantastic house but I would get lost in such a big place. Nice to see that you are both brave enough to take on all this work. Good luck 👍
Its an amazing house, luckey you!! We have a stone house as well here in Greece, full renovated because it was built in 1871, from granparents, and we are so happy to live there every summer with family and friends, and luckily it is by the sea!!! Be happy my friends at your beautiful home!!!❤❤❤
11:50 🎉🎉🎉 a suggestion is to put Flohr heating in and not the 240 but the 12 V floor heating which they use in caravans. Why because then you can use the solar energy run cable with a security device of course and heat your floor by these spots which you can put on the rugs or under the bed or under the couch and that way have the cheapest form without conversion of energy from 12 V into 20 to 40 and then back to 12, which had innovation prize in the Netherlands
I love that idea. It is a really great suggestion. At the moment though we are reluctant to pull up the wooden flooring as it would be expensive to replace, so maybe in a couple of years. Thank you so much for the suggestion 😃
Hi from Australia, stunning setting and such a solid home too, hopefully you can keep as many of the beautiful original features and woodwork as possible. Good luck with it all.
Yes ,,I'm ok with you about painting the ceilings in white, It would so brighten up the rooms, like day and night. 😊😊👍👍👍Bravo for all the work you've done, beautiful. ❤❤
I'm with you about the timber ceilings. I love wood and stone, but, like me, if you havent grown up with the ceilings then the dark colour could feel oppressive. How about a compromise with sanding and "whitewashing" (not with lime) where a wash of white timber paint is used so you get a pale colour, but can see the woodgrain. It tones the whole thing down considerably. I have seen this used on some furniture restoration videos. BTW congrats on your purchase of the property; its got everything going for it! Will enjoy future installations.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. The distressed look you describe is very popular. I've seen it a lot on old furniture and definitely brightens things up. Worth considering 😁
Hello from Australia.. love your house...gee wouldn't I love a project like yours..I think I would love to paint those dark dark ceilings white..but OMG what a time consuming job that would be...sooo many coats of paint...another alternative would be what we call gyprock ...sheets of plaster cut to fit...on ceiling would give good insulation cheap to buy and is quick install if you hire the right equpment to lift up to ceiling . Loved the tour...I am genuinly impressed...what a find..
Loved the tour of the house We have a house in Sao Miguel and we added some fans in each room to circulate the air And I have to say it helped immensely with dampness But with that said your house is amazing Great job
Hi from your brother country, Galicia! Love your house, it's got lots of potential, can't wait to witness the process of renovation. I'm sure it'll turn out stunning. New subscriber! 🤗
@@TeaAndTinto Thanks, it is! It's got some magic places: forests, coastline, villages... Very similar to Portugal, it's a shame the eucalyptus trees are taking over
I have just found your channel and was very taken in by the beauty of the house and garden. It looks to me like a lifetime project. There is so much to do, but I can see it it a labour of love.❤
Very impressive house. Looks like the living room was made by knocking down the rooms either side of the corridor. It is in very good condition for age. I've just bought a similar age house near Coimbra, 4 bed but it has been split in two so probably a similar size to yours originally. I still have the original windows like yours on the ground floor. Not sure why you want more bedrooms as ground floor is great for storage and workshop! Looks a good compromise of a liveable house but with opportunity to improve certain rooms. Mine is the same as has no heating and never had open fires so you do wonder how they kept warm in the winter. It does have good sun exposure so will warm up during the day.
Thanks John. That's very interesting. Yours had no heating either!. I think you are right about knocking down divisions. It makes sense to me. Glad you enjoy your house too. 😁
Just thinking of this from your tour. You mentioned the continued stain on the kitchen ceiling. Also you have an odor. My suggestion would be to call in a professional on how to deal with this. Odor is mold and can be serious health problem, My best to you in your restoration.
Kitchen is lovely. Like the tiles and the blue and white looks neat. Beautiful house. I suppose a four poster bed would make it warm and cosy in the winter, seeing the ceilings are so high.
Hi there, from WallaWalla, Washington, USA! What a lovely home that just needs a bit of attention... and mirror hanging!!! 😂 The ground floor lounge is my favorite room, I think, with those lovely old stone walls, and the lighter colored ceiling with the more authentic looking wider boards! I'm happy to add you to my other favorite renovation videos in beautiful Portugal, and join in the progress of your home! Thanks for the invitation to tag along!
Thank you very much friend in Walla Walla. Great to have you with us! Glad you like the ground floor lounge and we are planning to keep those lovely old wooden ceilings 😁

Hello from Flagstaff, Arizona (pine trees and mountains). 😊 🌼 When I was a child, we lived in Thailand and were able to visit parts of the world. One of my favorite trips was to Portugal. I had a mystical, deeply peaceful experience in one of the castles. How wonderful that you now have gorgeous land and a Beautiful home in Mico's (?) homeland. p.s. I think Portugeuse is one of the most beautiful languages on our planet.
The dampness is due to the stone not being able to breathe. The render or paint should be replaced with lime based plaster or paint which will solve this problem.
Thank you Sharon. You are right. Probably something we'll have to do over time, bit by bit.

I think you could be right Billy. It´s a shame there´s no old photos of how it used to be.
Hi there Anita in Germany. Thank you for the lovely comments.
Wow what an amazing house! Those cupboards in the bedroom are absolutely stunning. So much storage. The living room is remarkable and again stunning!!! What a gorgeous home. I can't wait to see what you are going to do with this house. More videos please!!! Cheers from Toronto
Hi Eric in Toronto. Thank you for your lovely comments. Really motivating.😁
What a beautiful house. Granny South Africa
Thank you Mare 😊
Consider the possibility that the outbuilding with the bread oven and metal chimney was the original kitchen or ‘cook house’. Many older houses, particularly up north, had detached kitchens as a safeguard from fires affecting the main house. My grandmother came from a village in Viseu and her parents’ house had this detached kitchen system and it was much much smaller and simpler than your beautiful place. 😊
That's a good suggestion Hugo. With a bread oven and chimney, perhaps most of the cooking was done there.😃
Well done. Lots of progress so far and it looks like you have resolved a lot of the roof problems.
It is a fantastic house but I would get lost in such a big place. Nice to see that you are both brave enough to
take on all this work. Good luck 👍
Thank you Ken. Yep! Either brave or slightly bonkers 😀
Thank you. Wow! Your house sounds fantastic with those sea views. You are also very lucky 😁
Watching from UK. You have a beautiful property. A big project to take on, but will be amazing once complete. Enjoy your new home. Happy renovating .
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much 😊
Yes ,,I'm ok with you about painting the ceilings in white, It would so brighten up the rooms, like day and night. 😊😊👍👍👍Bravo for all the work you've done, beautiful. ❤❤
Thank you very much for your lovely comments 😃
Lovely home. I fell in love with your gorgeous stone walls. The history this has is incredible. Watching you from Texas USA.
Hi Pamela in Texas 👋. Thank you very much 😁
Thank you for this interesting tour just found you this week!will enjoy your journey from over here in Canada
Welcome aboard! A great Olá from a sunny Portugal.
Amazing house! You could rent out the downstairs a a seperate holiday let. It ha everything one could want for a short or longer stay!
Thank you. It certainly lends itself to that because of the separate entrance 😁
The studio looks so magnificent and i do love the ceilings. ❤️🙏
Thank you very much.
What a beautiful villa and property!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Thank you very much 😃
It is a gorgeous house!!. We live in the Algarve and haven't seen such well maintained old house here. Good luck with renovating. Marcel
Thank you very much Marcel. Great to have you with us.
Watching from Israel. Good luck on your adventure. The house and property are amazing. We are hoping to settle near Porto someday with a farm. 😊
Welcome Moira. Thank you very much. We wish you well with your search 😃
Your home is going to be stunning. I'm looking forward to following the journey with you. From New Zealand
Hi there Celia in New Zealand. Great to have you with us 😁
Hello from Australia.. love your house...gee wouldn't I love a project like yours..I think I would love to paint those dark dark ceilings white..but OMG what a time consuming job that would be...sooo many coats of paint...another alternative would be what we call gyprock ...sheets of plaster cut to fit...on ceiling would give good insulation cheap to buy and is quick install if you hire the right equpment to lift up to ceiling . Loved the tour...I am genuinly impressed...what a find..
Hi Heather in Australia. Thank you. What a great idea! I hadn't thought of that. Maybe the gyprock would work for the walls as well.
@@TeaAndTinto also great insulation as well
Loved the tour of the house
We have a house in Sao Miguel and we added some fans in each room to circulate the air
And I have to say it helped immensely with dampness
But with that said your house is amazing
Great job
Thank you so much. We love the idea of the fans. It definitely sounds like a solution!
What a great old house!
Thank you 😊
Hi from your brother country, Galicia! Love your house, it's got lots of potential, can't wait to witness the process of renovation. I'm sure it'll turn out stunning. New subscriber! 🤗
Hi there Maria in Galicia. The scenery in Galicia is so beautiful 😍
@@TeaAndTinto Thanks, it is! It's got some magic places: forests, coastline, villages... Very similar to Portugal, it's a shame the eucalyptus trees are taking over
I’m with you, white ceilings, not so heavy looking, brighter and cleaner looking. Best wishes from Australia
Thanks. It would give more light 😄
A very life pastel green would be lovely in the summer room
Thank you 👍. I love pastel colours 😃
Amazing house and very well explained
Thank you so much 🙂
My son lived in Aveira for a year while he played basketball there. We visited him. Lovely country
Wow. We love Aveiro. You spotted the photo! I remember Aveiro used to get great Basketball players from the US!
Just beautiful. Good luck for everything!🙏👏❤️
Thank you so much Mia 😀
What a beautiful house! I love the wood and stone and the light from all the windows.
Thank you very much Beth 😃
Love the building, well done on giving it a whole new life!
Thank you very much 😊
First time viewer and loving your channel! Have subscribed, thank you for sharing your lovely property. Best wishes from Canada 🇨🇦
Hi friend in Canada 👋. Thank you so much for watching 😀
Hi i love your house watching from USA
Hi Tess in USA👋
I have just found your channel and was very taken in by the beauty of the house and garden. It looks to me like a lifetime project. There is so much to do, but I can see it it a labour of love.❤
Thank you very much. Glad you like it 😊
Such a gorgeous house! I hope you do not cover up all that gorgeous wood with paint; it is just beautiful as it is! Thanks for the tour.
Thank you so much! We are not planning to paint any of the existing wood.
Beautiful home. I love the work you’ve done on the ground floor lounge-the stone walls. The room seems somehow larger with them.
Thank you for your lovely comments.
Ever consider turning the room off the salon/living room into your kitchen and having the kitchen into a main floor laundry room/extra bathroom?
Hi there Kristina
Thanks for the great suggestion. We did consider the option of putting a kitchen in the conservatory but the window sills are low .
what a stunning property you have
Thank you so much
Are you planning a B&B? House would be ideal for that, so many rooms with great views.
Thanks Paul. It would work well, but we have no plans for the time being.
You have a beautiful place I can't wait to make the way you want.
Thank you very much Robert ☺️
The house is beautiful.
Thank you Helena
Have you considered that the mirrors aren’t being put up because your fella is a vampire😂??? Absolutely beautiful home. Very glad for you.😊
😂 That's so funny. It's time to get out the garlic! Thank you friend 😀
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL !
Thank you very much 😊
Just thinking of this from your tour. You mentioned the continued stain on the kitchen ceiling. Also you have an odor. My suggestion would be to call in a professional on how to deal with this. Odor is mold and can be serious health problem, My best to you in your restoration.
Thank you Linda for the suggestion. There isn't any odour and it's dry inside so fixing the roof worked.😄
Kitchen is lovely. Like the tiles
and the blue and white looks neat. Beautiful house. I suppose a four poster bed would make it warm and cosy in the winter, seeing the ceilings are so high.
Thank you. That's a great idea😃
Hi there, from WallaWalla, Washington, USA! What a lovely home that just needs a bit of attention... and mirror hanging!!! 😂
The ground floor lounge is my favorite room, I think, with those lovely old stone walls, and the lighter colored ceiling with the more authentic looking wider boards!

Hi friend in Arizona. Flagstaff sounds beautiful too. Thank you for such lovely thoughts ☺️
