Here were are in 2023 and this is still one of the best videos on the LX100 that I could find on UA-cam. I'd love to see Volume 2 and/or your thoughts on the Mark ii version of the camera. Thank you!
Excellent. Very well done. For those who complain about "monotone", you need to check yourself. This is a very thorough and informative video for LX-100 owners.
seriously one of the most thorough and detailed reviews I have seen in a while. you could turn this into a manual and I would buy it. on-point my friend, keep up the good work!
Wonderful contribution! Your "stick with Auto ISO" and switch from P to Tv mode when low light demands seems really useful. And above all, I do so wish someone at Panasonic would hear your thought about adding a hyperfocal option for one of the buttons. A killer option!!
Just my opinion. I'm no expert by a long shot. But IMHO. Cameras have exceeded the consumers ability to both appreciate and afford the differences of ongoing technology. I have been an non-pro consumer and user of film and digital cameras for over 43 years. My take is that most people can't afford the best gear that is available and even those that do are at odds at what is best and what is acceptable when it comes to taking acceptable photographs. I have owned a ton of various cameras through the years. I've seen it all. Presently I own a Panasonic FZ-1000 and a LX-7. Both have given very good results. Watching videos like this, though very informative and very well informed makes my head spin. I think I will just stay with what I currently have and forget about upcoming camera tech. Cheers....:-)
Clearly the most informative, incisive video on this camera. Very well thought out, very helpful. By far the best I've seen. You kept my attention all the way through. Thanks, Neil
I've just bought a nice second-hand LX100. This is the perfect video to get me started making these settings decisions again. Just perfect.Thank-you Learning Fast! :)
An excellent video on the complexity and solutions on and for the LX100 of .Very illuminating and helpful. Thanks for posting this video and sharing your knowledge.
Can I know if there's a volume 2 to this video? There's a lot of details in this video about the LX100. Some of which is a little bit too technical for even enthusiasts so there need to be some elaboration needed. Although I've viewed this video more than a few times, I can't really say that I've completely digested its contents but whenever I do review this after learning a bit more about my LX100, I always get to learn something new. So I'm always watching if there're anything new on LX100 on your channel. Looking that the features on this camera, there's still much more that can be learnt. Thanks for making this video!
Thanks for posting such a comprehensive review. Very useful for someone (like me!) thinking about buying one and gives a really thorough run down of what the camera will do. Have to echo some of the other comments about your less than engaging speaking voice but I didn't go to sleep and found the content extremely useful. (I just found out earlier, and you touched on it, that the LX100 has AF-ON capability! If there was any doubt about wanting one that's gone as I only ever shoot with back button focusing with my dSLRs.) Now I'm going to look up the other vids in your LX100 series.

Thanks for video! One note: LX100 and LX100 II I believe have no rolling shutter mechanisms they have central shutter - you can hear the difference and thanks to this implementation you can synchronize flash up to 1/4000s. Pity that in A mode shutter goes only till 1/2000s, however in S mode you can actually utilize 1/4000s.
Hi, I just purchased the LX100, this is my first Panasonic camera. I am shooting with NIkon FF cameras, I purchased this camera as a walk a round camera when big gear is something that I do not want to carry. I look forward to additional tips on working this camera and setting up the settings to get the most out of this great little camera. Thanks
Thank for putting out such a comprehensive video, but I would really like to see a follow up like you said in the video. Settings for different situations, and best use of the Custom setting. Lots going on in this little camera.
Excellent, detailed review! I posted the link in the mu-43 forums. Have you experimented with the 4k photo from video functionality? Looking forward to your customisation review. I've only shot on Olympus u4/3 cameras until now, and am interested on how to best manage Panasonic cameras. Also any video shooting and configuration tips with this camera would be great. Subscribed!
An excellent review with a lot of detail. Some have mentioned about your monotone voice. Don't take it too personal, but look at it as constructive criticism. If I may add a further point. Perhaps try slowing down and pause regularly to allow those listening to absorb what you are saying. I'm quite literate, photography speaking, but I found myself repeating parts of your video to understand your points made. If you were to adjust your narrative in this way, you're review would be so much better. I do thank you for taking the time to bring these tips to our attention.
I recently took delivery of a Leica D-Lux typ 109 and it looks very similar. I set it up as I wanted and am getting very good images. Both cameras are great serious compacts. The only difference I can see is that the Panasonic is made in China and Leica in Japan. I got mine for NYC street photography and am mostly leaving my Nikon pro heavy stuff at home due to getting old.
I liked your review very much and I will certainly watch the other parts. Very useful of getting the most out of this camera that I will definitely buy some day. Thank you!
It's aimed at someone who prefers manual operation. I like to set every feature shutter speed/ iso/ focus etc manually. I don't use wifi, dont like touch screens or tilting screens, just another thing to break. The dedicated image processor in these is probably way beyond what you'll find in your phone and in most case your computer
Just wondering where the rest of the tips and tricks videos are and the other videos you mentioned you wanted to make. Thanks awesome video though very informative.
Absolutely love it! Can do do an ebook on this? Where are the other volumes? Are you working on them? Thank you so much for such an in-depth review! If only all of them were like that ...
Sure it's fast at F1.7 but what's it's equivalent F stop in 35mm Terms, The 25mm F1.7 on a Micro four thirds like the gx80 for example is equal to F3,4 or thereabouts, but seeing as less of the sensor is being used, about 20% less, it's F stop is actually higher, possibly comparable to an F2 on a Micro four thirds using it's entire sensor area
Great video, most informative. Do you reckon you'll get round to making the other videos that you referred to? I would definitely be keen to hear any other suggestions that you have. I'm a photography noob and I bought the LX100 and would greatly appreciate any help getting to grips with my new camera :)
Brilliant review, absolutely superb! Question: Any chance you posting the text to this video somehow? I had a hard time following the narration when the cute cat and puppy were on screen. I'm much interested in the low light capability of the LX100 (live music, bars and clubs, etc). Any chance you tackling that feature of the LX100? I have both the LX100 and LX7 and the LX100 hasn't seem any more impressive than the LX7 so far, but maybe I'm running my tests incorrectly. Again, a great review on the LX100, best I've watched or even read.
I will try to get the text posted. However, it is many pages long so it is hard to post in places that have limits on the characters. I might try to add subtitles to it. I should be able to cover the other things you asked about in future reviews.
Nice vids man, Would you say that the LX100 reaches the IQ level of GH2 for videos? They're currently kind of the same 2nd hand budget, and the LX100's compact form factor plus good lens is really appealing to me. I also love its manual controls. Currently owning the GH2, but I don't swap the lenses that often. Loving the video quality I get out of it, although I'd rather swap it for something smaller and with wifi. Would you say I'd be stepping down for 1080p video quality? Or is the LX100 instead higher quality than GH2? Not really obsessed about 4K, but I guess is nice to have it there for fake pans etc. I'm asking because I think I must have bumped before in another video of yours in which you were stating your opinions about high bit rate hacks, while using a GH2 (which was also a very interesting video). But if I'm wrong apologies ;)
Ale Loy I haven’t used the GH2 in awhile as I have a GH5 now. I would say the LX100 and GH2 are similar from what I can remember. However, the m4/3s lenses they have now are far superior but also much more expensive. I really like the GH5s as well. That is a fantastic camera for low light. If I was starting from scratch now I would go GH5/GH5s wide angle zoom and long zoom with the 45mm F1.2.
Excellent review of a wonderful camera. A lot of people moan that it doesn't have touch screen or tilting screen but for me its the perfect camera. The retro styling make it a classic amongst the totally ridiculous superzoom toys that are prevalent today. For me the LX100 is perfect for my needs, your review has helped me to decide so I'm ordering one today (11 October 2018) Thank you for the video. Will there be a part 2.
Great discussion of Auto-ISO problems in Panasonic cameras. I still can't believe that already back in 2008 the DMC-LX3 had the minimum shutter speed setting for AutoISO, but they never included it into any of the mirrorless cameras or in LX100. There are tons of user requests for auto-ISO improvements, for example some links here: www.lumixgexperience.panasonic.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5396&start=0 BTW, a tip for you: you can easily (an reversibly) remove the horrible rattling triangle neck-strap thingies and attach your wrist-strap directly to the camera. Thanks for the video.
Wow. That's thorough. I've been shooting for over 20 years and somehow never used (or felt need) for auto ISO. I might look into it for my P&S. It's no good for pro use (too unpredictable). Thanks for the review.
Did you ever do a series of videos on how to get the Best from this camera plus settings for good light bad light..cloudy and also indoors plus. Still photography as I have just purchased this camera and find this video brilliant but incredibly hard to understand..😉
ignore the comment about your tone.. your review was extremely well informed and very helpful.. though you were racing away a bit... can you explain why my panorama setting is greyed out? What am i not doing? or doing wrong? thanks
Thank you so much for your review; it extremely detailed and informative. I could live without being able to use Auto-ISO in manual mode with exposure compensation. But not being able to set minimum shutter speed in Av mode is a deal breaker.
Hi. Very useful review! I just bought the camera and have a couple of questions: In high contrasty scenes in bright the autofocus often is off, even at 24mm f.5.6 Seems to be far to close to the camera. This puzzles me because as you say the hyper focus distance should actually keep "everything" in focus. Also: The screen has a fair resolution, but once the picture I take (in RAW) is replayed, the resolution goes down. This makes it difficult to check focus. (In Lightroom the resolution is OK, though..) Any idea on how to work around this? Thanks!
Very good detailed review. I am considering this camera and I am a geek for this kind of detail. Dislike being surprise after own. All cameras are compromises I just want to know what they are so I can logically make the tradeoffs that make sense to me.
I've had mine for a week, one of my favourite modes on my Sony for static objects/macro/landscape was mutli-frame noise reduction. To achieve this on this camera I like to set HDR on with slightly increased contrast to compensate and combine 3 shots into 1 for improved dynamic range and noise reduction. It's image stabilisation is not as good as Sony or Nikon, which is about the only issue I've had so far, there is usually a workaround though.
Awesome - thanks - great video as always from you. Really look forward to see the other LX100 videos's - I do have the LX100 - I would have preferred PSAM and Touch LCD with Touch Focus and Tilt LCD - something more like the GX7 which I have 2 of and love - I guess Panasonic was trying to fish in some Fuji X100s/t potential owners but I think that will loose many intermediate and beginner buyers - as the old school layout is nor for everyone - the IQ and size is fantastic on the LX100 but just disappointed with the lack of Touch LCD - so hopefully LX200 will have the fixes - but hopefully a firmware update before then
Thanks that is a great tutorial. I've heard moving the focus point is really messy (use menu) is there a way to assign it to a function button and use a wheel to 'steer' it around the screen.
I have been leaning towards the Rx100 M3 but tonight I am leaning back toward the LX100. I am a former video producer and still shooter looking to simplify without getting too auto-mode-overloaded. I think the panasonic may keep me happy with its manual abilities no?
Hi, thx for the video. I have the opportunity to buy this camera for good money. The catch is that the aperture ring won't engage anymore. Is it possible to set aperture digitally? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the good advise. I have a question if you can answer I have a nikon flash SB910 do you think i can use with the PANASONIS LX100? Thank you Flavio Milano Italy
Nice review, but disagree with the Auto ISO logic. Nikon dslrs have nailed this feature and a shame other manufacturers can't copy it. IMO I think the camera should allow to increase the Auto ISO up to 3200 before it does this "we know better" feature kicks in. The Min. Shutter feature was useful for that. I don't usually use auto features, but this one was useful.
Auto ISO or more specifically Intelligent ISO can be improved like I said in the video. However, the logic it currently uses is good sound logic. It is designed to give you the optimal settings in the majority of situations. It can't cover every situation because some situations are in direct conflict with each other.
Is it straight forward to set the focus to manual, manual shutter (30 or 60sec), aperture to manual (1.7-5.6), ISO manual (500-12500), noise reduction optional, in lapse time photo mode for night sky sequencing?
hey I have a question. I recently purchased the lx100 and when I lightly press the shutter button, the background of the subject I'm shooting keeps focusing in and out. do you know why?
Panasonic should replace the LX100 later this year. Even still I would probably get a Sony RX100 V anyway. I no longer have my LX100. I replaced it and all of my other cameras with a Panasonic GH5 and the 12mm F1.4 lens.
Hi guys, I am looking for an opinion on whether to keep my NEX 6 or sell it in order to get the LX100. At the moment I have the NEX 6 with a Sigma DN 30mm F2.8. This lens costs about 130 pounds in the UK so it's not exactly expensive but not cheap either. I am going on Holiday soon and want the camera with me. What makes me lean towards the LX100 is that it is an all in one system, I am not really interested in changing lenses as I only have one lens lol I like that the LX100 goes down to 1.7 aperture and shoots 4k video. Although the sensor is smaller is there any other downside to replacing my NEX?
Canon powershot series historically always had independent ISO selection capability in P or manual mode otherwise if one chooses auto ISO, it can still be programmed to have either a slower/or faster auto higher ISO UPshift algorithm with full EV compensation accessible ALL the time - I think this is a much more logical approach G7x still allows manual program shift whilst in P mode So I think Panasonic seems to be late in introducing these features and yet still retain restrictive workaround in manual mode with its ISO and the Rx100 allows a programmable ceiling limit ISO setting in Auto-ISO setup ( not sure if it allows a lower limit speed setting as well - that would be ideal )
Many Thanks from me too, a great video, a British accent would of course improve matters but I think it's bad form to nitpick when somebody has taken time and effort to help others with such a useful video, they're obviously not British :-)
The LX100 doesn't have built in flash and I don't like to carry the external flash around. Is it a bright enough lens that I don't need flash in most situations? Mostly indoor shooting with weak lighting
+IWBVS The included flash is pretty tiny and having had the camera for nearly a year I've never used it. The 1.8 and the sensor produce great images even when it slides to a higher ISO.
+John Young thanks for responding! I'm planning on never bringing the flash with me. I assume you shoot a lot indoor too? I shoot a lot indoor and nighttime with and without motion. thanks!
It is very sensitive but don't drink alcohol before setting it, also it is conceivable, although unlikely that eyesight could be so bad as to be out of the adjustment range :-)
Here were are in 2023 and this is still one of the best videos on the LX100 that I could find on UA-cam. I'd love to see Volume 2 and/or your thoughts on the Mark ii version of the camera. Thank you!
Ditto 2024.
Ditto 24/4/2024
This is probably the most comprehensive and articulate review of the LX100 on the internet. Good stuff!
I just bought the LX100 and so appreciate the work you did. It really helped me. I'd love to see more volumes! Please...
One of the best 2 reviews for this camera.
Mike Preece and the other one is....?
Wonderful contribution! Your "stick with Auto ISO" and switch from P to Tv mode when low light demands seems really useful. And above all, I do so wish someone at Panasonic would hear your thought about adding a hyperfocal option for one of the buttons. A killer option!!
Just my opinion. I'm no expert by a long shot. But IMHO. Cameras have exceeded the consumers ability to both appreciate and afford the differences of ongoing technology. I have been an non-pro consumer and user of film and digital cameras for over 43 years. So far, most interesting LX100-II video on YT, many thanks
Thanks for posting such a comprehensive review. Very useful for someone (like me!) thinking about buying one and gives a really thorough run down of what the camera will do. I hope Panasonic saw this for the lx100 successor. Well done. Still relevant in 2017, and no firmware update from version 1.0
Hi, I just purchased the LX100, this is my first Panasonic camera.
Thanks for this detailed review!
I'm looking to buy this camera,I don't see anymore videos (settings) on the Panasonic LX100?
Is it straight forward to set the focus to manual, manual shutter (30 or 60sec), aperture to manual (1.7-5.6), ISO manual (500-12500), noise reduction optional, in lapse time photo mode for night sky sequencing?
Great review and tips! THANK YOU!!!
Wonderful detail
Very Informative video. Thank you.
Great video, i learned some new things ! love the voice :-)
hey I have a question. I recently purchased the lx100 and when I lightly press the shutter button, the background of the subject I'm shooting keeps focusing in and out. do you know why?
What kind of case is that? Make/model/price please
Is this camera still worth getting? Could you do a follow up video?
Panasonic should replace the LX100 later this year. Even still I would probably get a Sony RX100 V anyway. I no longer have my LX100. I replaced it and all of my other cameras with a Panasonic GH5 and the 12mm F1.4 lens.
Hi, what is the brand and model of the bag?
will adjusting exposure compensation make the image more grainy or will I lose image quality?
excellent tutorial. Thanks.
Nice video! Like the voice crack at 0:56 ;)
What is an alternative for lx100 if my budget is 1000 pounds?
I can sense that the author is a professional photographer
please is it possible change exposure and focus during shoot video? Thanx
Canon powershot series historically always had independent ISO selection capability in P or manual mode otherwise if one chooses auto ISO, it can still be programmed to have either a slower/or faster auto higher ISO UPshift algorithm with full EV compensation accessible ALL the time - I think this is a much more logical approach
G7x still allows manual program shift whilst in P mode
So I think Panasonic seems to be late in introducing these features and yet still retain restrictive workaround in manual mode with its ISO and the Rx100 allows a programmable ceiling limit ISO setting in Auto-ISO setup ( not sure if it allows a lower limit speed setting as well - that would be ideal )
Nice tehnical review. The LX colors seem to be washed out in some cases.
LX 100 : Pl share field of view in HD & 4K video.... Is it cropped to "30 & 36 mm" as in LX 10.... Please....
Thanks great work...
When do we get the next bit of info on the LX100
As noted in this review, Panasonic, please: automatic hyperfocal and minimum auto ISO shutter speed!!
Many Thanks from me too, a great video, a British accent would of course improve matters but I think it's bad form to nitpick when somebody has taken time and effort to help others with such a useful video, they're obviously not British :-)
or me is better automatic..what you think?
Good video
The LX100 doesn't have built in flash and I don't like to carry the external flash around. Is it a bright enough lens that I don't need flash in most situations? Mostly indoor shooting with weak lighting
+IWBVS The included flash is pretty tiny and having had the camera for nearly a year I've never used it. The 1.8 and the sensor produce great images even when it slides to a higher ISO.
+John Young thanks for responding! I'm planning on never bringing the flash with me. I assume you shoot a lot indoor too? I shoot a lot indoor and nighttime with and without motion. thanks!
any idea why I don't have a time lapse option? do I have old filmware?
+mpgxsvcd ...Where are the links, that you mentioned at the end of the video? Thank You
On my Lumix LX100, focus with the viewfinder does not work! With diopter adjustment does not change, it's still blurry! Is there a setting to do?
It is very sensitive but don't drink alcohol before setting it, also it is conceivable, although unlikely that eyesight could be so bad as to be out of the adjustment range :-)
What do you think about the dust on sensor problem?
It's over publicised, dust is dust, it doesn't affect your photos, and can be taken out if you want in post processing. It doesn't stop the pros.
