PSA: please don't spray paint your camera, especially if you ever intend to sell your kit to MPB down the line! It mightttttttt affect the valuation slightly 😅 So what do you reckon to the GX8 as an every day carry?? I'm excited to put it through its paces in a follow up video next month in LA! If you have any questions about it that you'd like me to cover just let me know 😁📷
A G9M2 in the GX8 body now what would you say to that, I'd want one as I see no reason to persist with the pentaprism housing if cameras nolonger have a mirror box.
I was thinking of that David Thorpe conclusion as I was watching this video (I just watched it the other day for the 10th time since it came out, lol). Then you went and quoted him. 🙂 May he rest in peace.

5:25 - the painting worked, but even if it didn’t, you get massive points for referencing David Thorpe, RIP. Thank you for bringing up the GX8 again. You rock lady.
YES!! Finally some true GX-8 love. This camera and the Leica 15 mm 1.7 rekindled my love for photography and sent me down the M 4/3 path. Got a bit misty with the David Thorpe references.. he was a huge influence and was very generous to answer my questions on his videos and in his forum. I think you will actually learn to love that viewfinder as I have. GX-8 with the Leica primes (or Sigma) make me feel like a real live photographer again. Wonderful video.. I feel validated..
@@derbydelay oh that's cool cuz I like the features of the GF 1.. I've been looking for the little 14 - 42 power zoom.. and found one attached to a GF3 for $110 US... I was thinking it was a throwaway camera and keep the lens but I've actually enjoyed using it.. and yes if it wasn't for my enormous investment in micro four thirds I'd probably be shooting Fuji too
❤Loved❤ the props you gave to David with the quote. His videos along with Giulio Sciorio's channel with his actual commercial / editorial work with M 4/3 helped me jump in on this awesome format many years ago. 😊
I actually had the GX8 for a few years. Used it for skateboarding photos. Worked well with the 7-14mm. Traded it to a team of artists for some artwork when I got my G9. They're still using it to document their work. One thing to note is that the mic jack is a 2.5mm so you will need an adapter if you're using 3.5mm gear. I do like the size of it. I was thinking of getting the GX9 but they tossed the flip out screen (and switched to a flip up), which to me is a "must have" on any camera I buy.
David Thorpe was a legend, I loved watching his detailed technical reviews and he had a great sense of humour. It was interesting to hear why you sold the GH6 especially as you were a big fan of the camera (so that was a surprise). I have a feeling you won’t be alone there. Despite it being a powerhouse for video I agree with people who say that the G9II is sort of the GH6 everyone originally wanted aside from the lack of a fan to prevent overheating and it was interesting that this issue alone seemed to be the main thing stopping you from getting one. But that makes sense given how you use it. I rarely use my mirrorless camera to record long events unless it’s a C or D cam and then I usually shoot in 1080 and the lowest bit rate etc and most of the time when I do it’s an indoor event so overheating isn’t much of an issue. For those types of events my A+B cams are always my camcorders so the lack of a fan wouldn’t be a problem in the G9II for me. It all comes down to what you need something for and how you use it.
I love the GX8. It's been my main (and only digital) camera for the past 6 years. I choose to upgrade the lenses instead of upgrading the body and I do not regret this decision. I use this camera with the prime lumix 25mm f1.4 and 15mm f1.7 with the zoom lense 14-140 MkII (weather sealed, as the camera body). Maybe I will gift myself the leica 45mm macro to scan 35mm films. I learned everything I know about photography on this camera. I am happy to see it still a true value in 2023. Thank you very much for your video :)
Just a note: in the OM-1 you can configure the FN lever so it works as the power switch. that way you can use the camera with one hand only. The drawback is that you cannot use it to change from still to video, or to switch between 2 AF modes.
Same with the OM5, and as my GRiii and GX9 switch on right hand side, that is how I have mine set up, front dial aperture, back dial exposure compensation!
I still use my GX8 a lot these days for photography, and it was my main camera for quite a few years. I'm surprised that it is still a very relevant camera today in 2023 even though it was already more than 8 years!
My absolute favorite camera. Many criticize the EVF that can be put in a vertical position. I am very tall and not the youngest. It prevents that I have to kneel down for most portraits to get eye level contact. Flipping the EVF into vertical and looking down does the job.
I'm planning to buy the G9II and I don't think that will overheat in 25p or 50-60p, I own the GH5 and I live in Greece where in summer the temperatures are over 38º celsius and never had a problem, I think the cooling system will be much needed in 120p or in more demanding codecs like apple prores etc.
You may be OK! I'm just going from my own tests. You can see them in my original g9ii video. In the UK (admittedly on a very hot day!) It didnt manage 30 minutes. My gh5 was also absolutely fine in heat, I've had many a summer wedding with that beaut! I shot a lot of long video in baking heat in Kenya with the g9ii, but in the shade. In the shade it performed great.
8:00-8:16 What happened with standby mode OM1? Power on - standby mode after 30/60/90/any sec. - after pressing the "snapshot button" camera is ready to work.
Another great video, Emily, and I was absolutely delighted to hear your tribute to David as it was him (via UA-cam of course, not personally) that got my back into photography by introducing me to M4/3. I really enjoyed my GX8, but when I was lucky enough to be able to afford to become a 2 camera person, I went G9 through MPB and then needed a smaller one, which as I said before, became the lovely EM 5 mk1 on your recommendation and I am loving that as my small camera. 😀
I keep saying it but your videos just make me so happy! This one especially was nice to see since I'm a big fan of the GX-9, but the prices have gone up considerably. I considered the GX-8 at one point but it was slightly heavier and there was another reason I couldn't remember. Anyway, these are amazing little cameras! Thank you again. BTW, please come to Georgia! :)
Congratulations on getting a GX8. The GX8 is currently my favourite camera. Over the weekend, I did 6½ hours of concert photography with just my GX8 and 4 prime lenses. It's possible, but my conclusion was, that I need an extra camera body - preferably an Olympus EM5 III or something very similar. The GX8 is great for stills photography, I only have one real issue... the front button is too close to the grip, if you have big hands. I have put zebra toggling there, because it matters less, if I hit it with my index finger, which I do quite often.
Congrats on your new body. I just bought a GX9 with the kit 12-60mm lens. I am mostly a photographer. Weather sealing and mic input would be nice. Surprised how much I am enjoying the kit lens vs. the PL15mm lens. L o v e the L monochrome D setting. The Seahawks didn’t look great Sunday but we did win. Hope we look better this Sunday when you are part of the 12. Mask On Nurse Marty
Love my Gx8, so much that when I broke one (falling off a tripod onto concrete) I replaced it with another... still waiting for a true GX8 replacement!
On the OM-1 power button and one-handedness: I have "quick power off" (or similar) enabled on the settings, which makes the camera turn off after like 8ish seconds of no use (as long as Auto-EVF switch is enabled), so I rarely ever need to use the power switch during a session as the camera takes care of the power management itself.
The GX8 is still the camera I love most. The G9 is of course "better" but if I want to have fun I use the GX8. I love the tilt evf very much - especially because as a tall man it is a good idea to go down a little bit ... for astrophoto ... for macros ... there might come the day I brake my G9 into piece when trying to tilt the evf 😅
Awww you mentioned David Thorpe. His videoson M43 cameras, as well as yours, did influence me a whole lot in buying my Lumix G7 back then :) What a lovely lad, miss him and his videos a lot.
It's my little carry camera. Love the EV/tilt. I put a half case on it to make the grip bigger and to use back button focussing better, works great. Also added a larger eye cup for a more imersive experience. And just use the pancake zoom and a small flash unit.
I'm just the occasional travel photographer, but I'm so glad I ended up getting this little powerhouse of a camera. Got it from MPB as well, last November, with a Lumix G 12-60mm as a general travel/video lens, and an M Zuiko 17mm f2.8 for a discreet jacket-pocket-able combo. Look forward to more content from you with the GX8. Also subscribed to your channel!
The Pen F is a collector’s item now, the prices on it won’t come down. If you want one, grab one sooner than later, I recommend the black version as it’s more durable and scoffs less than the silver version.
I skimmed the comment section but didn't see so just worth noting is the reason it doesn't have IBIS in video is because the IBIS is only 2 axis as opposed to the 3 or 5 axis we generally know. No complaints just answering the why 😊. Great video as always
Was considering the GX8 recently. I want that doggone viewfinder (have the GX9 but VF a lot smaller). Only really turned off by "the flippy screen" -- I want a screen that tilts up like e.g. gx800 or e-pl7 -- I guess cause I don't do video...
The GX8 has always been on my list for cameras. It fills that lovely small and portable niche, has a nice EVF, and most importantly, uses the same batteries at the G85. Always did want to get my hands on one, and I've been seriously tempted to get one as a daily carry-around, as well as for astrophotography, including deep sky astrophotography. The EVF being tiltable is something I hadn't considered being rather handy for astrophotography, as it means I wouldn't have to rely on the tilty flippy screen anywhere near as much. Naturally I'd send mine to KolariVision first though, but that's because I like infrared photography (and you also get a lot more H-Alpha in the mix for astrophotography)
Have an em10 and a G85. Tend to agree. I enjoy shooting the Olympus more but it’s not as good in every other aspect as the G85. Makes it a tough call though for which to recommend - they’re both great in various ways.
So far I learned that photography is a combination of using light intelligently to capture graphic compositions and textures for an optimal picture This lady added another component to the topic of Photography which we too often forget. One that is most certainly not promoted by any of the academic Master photographers. Whose who bore you to death in the process of teaching. And that component is HAVING FUN At the end of the day - isn't it that what actually matters the most. Are we enjoying and having fun in what we are doing? Thank you!
Hi Emily, great content as always. Just a heads up on the OM-1 power switch which I understand can be a pain for some users. Did you know that if you go to the gear icon in the menu, on the first page of button functions you will see there is about two thirds of the way down an option for "Function (Fn) lever settings. Open this and it gives an option to use the lever as the ON/OFF for the camera. Obviously this does mean you loose the photo or video switching which is default however you can still just use the PASM dial to go to video mode. Hope this helps.
Great review Emily as always. It would be great to have a updated GX8 mark2! Hey, if you are passing through New Mexico on your trip, let me know. I will buy you lunch! New Mexico has so much to offer, thats why they called it the land of enchantment! Have a great trip.
Amazing! I actually recently purchased an Olympus E-P3 because I wanted a dedicated carry around camera and didn't want to spent money on a Ricoh. E-P3 cost $120 USD and I just keep my Olympus 17mm 1.8 on it. Great video! OM really needs to consider updating the Pen-F
YAY! I love my GX8. In fact, I'm only shooting 1080p on the GX8 to keep stability in check. (This is Alan Houser by the way 👋 you've answered many a question recently when I was gearing-up for my new channel: RURAL ESTATE. I'm currently battling Filmora at the moment, but I'll be here soon!)
Great video, I agree with most of your points. I still have the GX8 and it's my go to travel camera. The GX8 takes wonderful pictures that rival FF when paired with Leica lenses or Sigma primes. I still can't believe Panasonic only made one of these bodies, seeing that Sony completely copied this design with the A7C. Please bring this camera back with phase detect!
I use parallel my GX 9, I call her my “poor man’s Leica” because of her formfactor. Unfortunately no more mic-input like the GX8, but so brilliant pictures for a tiny darling..❤
I feel the GX8 is the camera I miss that I never owned. I was very close to buying one after very good experiences using both Lumix FZ1000 and LX100. The GX8 and GX9 in particular had my interest, but the 8, the older just screamed better build quality, and that EVF - as a glasses wearer - had appeal. Ultimately, found myself in Fuji land (X-E3 & X-T2), but I'm sure I would have enjoyed having an ILC m4/3 system just as much. Oh, and your camera looks cool!
Another great video, and interesting artwork with that camera body! 😀 The GX8 is a joy to use, but be a bit careful with that weather sealing. Mine still works shooting with, but the LCD back panel died from using it out in the rain. Also don't knock the dial around the shutter into things - it's just a press fit and will easily fall off, as mine did. But love it otherwise, that viewfinder is a joy to use (as opposed to the GX9 which was a disappointment), and I love the grip and feel of the camera in hand! And a neat thing is that you can modify the country code in service mode to remove the 30 min limit in video if your version had it from the beginning. I have searched high and low for a replacement LCD panel at a reasonable price, but to no avail unfortunately. So, yesterday I just snagged a E-M5 III for a bargain as a more compact carry everywhere option, excited to see how that will pan out. Otherwise shooting primarily with a set of 2 G9 bodies. And yes my collection includes a dozen other models too, gotta love Micro Four Thirds! 😊
Love the spray painting, Emily! I don't think I'd ever be brave enough to try that! If you can get hold of one, I'd love to see your thoughts of the GX7, especially from a handling point of view. I've never been able to feel love for my gx9 despite it being a great camera. The gx7 was just so much nicer to hold
When the GX8 was released, I was using the GX7. I remember my horror at the size of the GX8! I waited. I bought the GX80! No shutter shock, no low pass filter (I think the GX8 still had one?), IBIS for stills and video. The body size is much smaller. Now I own the GX9, the most refined of the line 🙂 Flash, swivel EVF and a focus mode lever. 4k photo mode is useful and fun. Out of the GX line, the camera I haven't owned but always wanted, is the GX1. Somehow I have a soft spot for it. The tiny size and cool look perhaps? 🙂
I am considering whether to buy the S9. Currently, I have the G9 and the GX8 along with four different Leica lenses. I still love my GX8, especially because of its viewfinder. I use this camera more than my G9 and particularly enjoy using the 25mm and the 12mm lenses with it. Also, do you know anything about the Lumix GM5?
I would like to have seen the gx9 released with the same weather sealing and viewfinder of the gx8. I had a gx8 for a short while, but was put off by the loud and clunky mechanical shutter. The shutter shock continued to be an issue with me too. The electronic shutter is okay, but not ideal if there’s movement in your photo. Hopefully they’ll rerelease this style in a gx8 ii, or gx10 with the mechanical shutter of the gx9
@@andresgonzalezcerda7635the GX9 is really the GX85 ii. Heavier unfortunately, but otherwise better all round. (What would you want in the ii that the GX9 doesn't have?)
Hi! Do you have a video explaining phase detect auto focus? I’m both nearsighted and farsighted and I want to move to micro four thirds because the full frame Sony system is just too heavy
I love the idea of the GX8, but I actually got better detail with my E-M5 mark ii, even being the older E-M1 16mp sensor. Would it really matter at the end of the day? Probably not if I'm being honest. A lot of my work is lifestyle portraiture, which doesn't exactly need tack sharp on tiny letters at 100%+ zoom.
I recently purchased a gx8 and I love it for photography but to use the cinelike-d profile the camera must be in video mode and while in video mode it will not allow me to change the shutter speed. Has anyone else had this issue or know how it can be changed?
I just purchased a g9 mark 1, but I traded a Lumix S5 for it and kept my gx8. A GX8 can practically hide in plain sight amongst the smartphones and DSLR style cameras. Sometimes people come up to me and ask if I’m using film!
Interesting. As a street photographer, often shooting at night, I'm mainly concerned about fast accurate AF. The M5 and PenF were not good enough. I m still struggling to find a small compact M43 as a easy carry on instead of my M1. I would appreciate that you show us more real example of their capabilities.
I'm a fan of Lumix but I'm also a fan of Olympus/OM Systems and I enjoy the power switch on the left 😁 Everything else we're on the same page. I would have all the small cameras too. I got myself the EM-10 IIIs but GX8 is next to my collection. Pen-F I would love but like you said, too much $$$ 😒
i will say it again; she is adorable. i think she infuses love of cameras with an impish quality which is so rare in today's photography. she is entirely entertaining.
Honestly I’m a Sony user and the thought of doing anything micro 4/3rds seemed ridiculous, but you’ve got me intrigued… I’m definitely considering an em5 original when I want to treat myself next… I was wondering whether since they’re a strength of particularly Olympus/om a review of the various computational photography features and which cameras have which ? :p
Try the omd M5 ii. Best price to have live composite and other things!!. Still have extra grip and extra battery body. You can make as big as you need.
thanks :) I'm not planning on switching systems so much, rather I've been looking at getting something like a canon g5x mark II as a lightweight camera, but the larger sensor, and built in low light, with more adaptability might be the better route to go... @@andresgonzalezcerda7635
When looking for a fun EDC camera, I agonized and then opted for the GX7 over the GX8. The ergonomics (not to mention that lovely grip) on the GX7 is perfect! Too bad they didn't carry it over to the GX8. About the power switch issue when you were on safari: could you not just let the camera go to "sleep" and then touch the shutter to instantly wake it? That would be a good alternative to the power off/on issue.
If it is painted by you personally, SOHTEBYS or CHRISTIES will sell it "slightly" higher :) I own th GX8 to have a small camera beside my Nikon D800E gear. The most exciting point on it ist the tilting EVF - awesome great ! I got it with the 20mm 1,7, which delivers superior quality. Additionally I bought a cheap 12-32 but with fr more slower aperture. The lens is second to the 20mm in quality and only an alternative if I need wide angle or a mini tele lens.
I still have my GX8 as a backup to my G9 and G85. It is rock solid dependable. I fell in love with the EVF and it spoiled me for all others. Hence why I had to sell my GX9 with its dinky evf. Its a pity you can't get the accessories for the GX8 anymore, I have the extended eyecup and the leather half case. Makes the whole thing feel so comfortable and the eyecup is like reviewing pics in a darkroom.
Agree, GX8 is a great buy now, more Fns than you can shake a stick at. Direct EV dial takes a little to adapt to, but is great once you have. Got mine for travel - a tad smaller than my G9.
Haha I have one I'm actually reviewing it this month on my American trip. In fact I'm out shooting with it now in cold and rainy Liverpool... it is so impressive in low light!
Why today? I've had a GX8 for years, taken it all over, and used it for all sorts of creative jobs, but in a fit of frugality had put it up for sale since I have a few more recent cameras. I then had a moment of clarity earlier today and realised I should keep it, but on my way home, before I had a chance to cancel my ad, somebody bought it. Had they seen your video? It's a really great and unique camera.
I've had a GX8 for MANY years as my little camera and it's a brilliant thing. If I need the best of the best I will use my Nikon, but if I want a great small camera with high quality tiny lenses, which is easy to carry and use, this is unbeatable. I'd love it if they could update this model with better AF and maybe a few more megapixels and a faster sensor read-out. I 'd rush out and buy one.
Just bought (another) one, in silver, but probs won't be applying the spray can! ;) Had a GX8 in 2015/16, loved the swivel EVF that needs to become a thing on all pro and street cameras for all manner of health/ergonomic reasons. Waited for an updated version from Panasonic, or a competitor from Sony etc, but almost 10 years later, having owned all manner of cameras in between (G80, LX100, A7SMK3) and after reviewing my album of several decades, most of my best and most creative stills and some tack sharp 4K video came from, drum roll, the GX8. Am probably going to get the Panasonic 14-140 that I had on my GH2 prior to my original GX8. Very versatile lens that produced superb stills and video, albeit 1080P video back then. Had an Oly Zuiko 12-40 f2.8 Pro on the first GX8, also excellent. Or if anyone has a suggestions for a better but affordable versatile STABILISED zoom for product photography and 4K birding video (work/personal!) that be great. (A7Smk3 costs a tad more, so produced the best video of anything out there, but that was for work productions.)
Nice. Did it come with the spray paint or was that an optional extra 😊 My back wheel on my GX80 has packed in and I'm thinking of 3 options 1 - Get the wheel fixed 2 - Get the GX8 3 - Get the GX9 1 would probably be the cheapest, if I can find someone who can repair it. GX9 has the built in flash, focus stacking although it's 4k video based outputting a JPG. It has a tiltable screen which doesn't stick out doubling the width. But the GX8 does have a slightly faster burst mode, the microphone socket, weather sealed and is cheaper than the GX9. It has a flip out screen than can be positioned in a number of ways - including selfie view. It also looks as if the GX8 can exceed the 30min limit if recording in 4k - is this correct? Decisions, Decisions, Decisions.
Hello I am hoping you will do some more posts on this camera as it is now 2Nd April 2024 and I have not seen any. Please post something on how you have found this camera.
@@MicroFourNerds thank you, I forgot that I looked at that post you did, and I am satisfied with your findings. I bought this camera for a very cheap price second hand of course. Thank you for your reply and I watched the post again.
I picked up the gx8 for my son awhile back when his Olympus died , he'll be pleased to hear it's weather sealed which we didn't know as it was raining when we went to the River of light on Friday 📷☔
That was cool yes , I thought the lightbulb with the butterflies was the weakest one though ,I've not had time to go though my photos from there yet , hopefully I got some good stuff
I told my wife that the eco packaging and zero emmisions delivery meant that me buying camera gear was actually saving the planet. She remains sceptical😂 Also, do you take commisions for funky camera mods? lol Great Video!
The gx9 is a bit strange. While it is newer (and smaller!) It lost the articulating screen and the weather sealing, and mic input. So I opted for the gx8 😊
I hate the S5IIX! It has spoilt me with phase detect AF... now I want to part with my GH6; but only when the GH6II or GH7 appears assuming it has PDAF (it will, won't it?) Great vid Emily - keep it up. BTW, Asterix is a Gaul, I think you mean asterisk.
Mpb should have stock used! (Links in description) rhey come with a 6 month warranty too. So are the best option. failing that ebay and local sellers like Facebook market place etc
The only pain point I see with the Gx8 is the flip screen for photography. No matter what, the tilt screen of the Gx9 feels much better. Hopefully, we'll get a Gx10 with a hybrid screen mechanism like the GH6. One can dream. 😣
Love your channel, and I see you eventually went G9II & S5 II but for non-youtuber video people reading this - DO NOT SELL YOUR GH6. Its still the best video camera on the market under 2k and isn't worth selling for what you'll get out of MPB etc. I still come back to it time and time again even though I own much newer, more expensive cameras. The video quality, the formats; its a workhorse still for at least another 3 years. /rant over
There are a few other issues I have with my GX8 (after coming from the nikon landscape). But I haven't used newer lumixes, so I don't know if they fixed these: * screen exposure breath: The screen will change exposure when lighting conditions change (unless manual mode). Meaning, even if you use aperture or shutter priority, set exposure and foxus through half-press, reframe your composition, the exposure in the screen can (and will) be different from the photo you get. * min shutter speed with auto-iso: I love auto-iso, but when I can set min speed, not when is constantly changing my shutter speed. I stopped using aperture mode just because of this. * remote IR trigger: Yeah, phone apps are cool and you can see your composition.... but sometimes, the app works like crap and all I want is a remote trigger. Specially if I'm on a tripod and only need to shot multiple times without changing anything. * exposure dial is unconfortable: This is a me problem, but I find the dial to be a two-hand operation. I would prefer button+dial instead
Can you number your points? My answers refer to GX9. I'm no expert so will only answer what I know #1 not a problem (I can't remember if in settings) #2 I set minimum shutter speed but also have maximum ISO -- the ISO setting has priority so shutter speed will go below min when required
While I won’t be upgrading to a G9II from my Olympus E-M1 Mark III because MFT is gonna be my everyday carry kit; I am going to sell my Leica SL to buy a S5II as my main kit because it’s got IBIS, much cheaper batteries, BSI sensor, and articulating screen. The Leica has none of those. Not about to pay $250 for a single battery. My Leica M10’s batteries cost me $180 each so yeah I’m not doing that again 😅 I don’t like the vents on top of the S5II so I may look into putting tape over them whenever I go out in the rain. You’re almost tempting me to buy a GX85 off of mpb but nah. I gotta control myself 😂
PSA: please don't spray paint your camera, especially if you ever intend to sell your kit to MPB down the line! It mightttttttt affect the valuation slightly 😅
So what do you reckon to the GX8 as an every day carry?? I'm excited to put it through its paces in a follow up video next month in LA! If you have any questions about it that you'd like me to cover just let me know 😁📷
I said it before and I'll say it again. I can't wait for the gx8 mark II (not the gx9)
Yeah, nah... The only question I have is if Lumix will *ever* make a proper update of such a dreamy camera.

A G9M2 in the GX8 body now what would you say to that, I'd want one as I see no reason to persist with the pentaprism housing if cameras nolonger have a mirror box.
Great review! I wonder what made you choose GX8 instead of newer GX9? What people dislike about GX9?
The fully articulate rear screen is the answer.

Interesting info. Thanks!! But I do love the flip up screens. But smaller body…
I like the flip up screen of the GX9. I don't use video so much though 😉
With the OM-1 battery life you could just leave it switched on.
@@MicroFourNerds I've seen your video, I thought that overheat was 120p, you got me thinking. now 😊
8:00-8:16 What happened with standby mode OM1?
Power on - standby mode after 30/60/90/any sec. - after pressing the "snapshot button" camera is ready to work.
How about Olympus OMD EM5 mark iii, phase detect, IBIS, view finder, flippy screen, great size...
The gx800/850 might be good for you, no evf but cheaper
Congratulations on getting a GX8.
The GX8 is currently my favourite camera. Over the weekend, I did 6½ hours of concert photography with just my GX8 and 4 prime lenses. It's possible, but my conclusion was, that I need an extra camera body - preferably an Olympus EM5 III or something very similar. The GX8 is great for stills photography, I only have one real issue... the front button is too close to the grip, if you have big hands. I have put zebra toggling there, because it matters less, if I hit it with my index finger, which I do quite often.
Yesss I noticed this after making this video actually! I have it as aperture preview I think and I do press it quite a bit by accident
I love your content. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Well done!
Awww you mentioned David Thorpe.
His videoson M43 cameras, as well as yours, did influence me a whole lot in buying my Lumix G7 back then :)
What a lovely lad, miss him and his videos a lot.
What does the S stand for in the S line cameras?
One of the best cameras ever created from a useability point of view. The tilting EVF is aces.
Huge respect for referencing David Thorpe!!
New to photography,,, is this better than a sony a6400? Thank you for the videos 😊❤
Thats a nice one, waiting for the hands on review.
Was considering the GX8 recently. I want that doggone viewfinder (have the GX9 but VF a lot smaller). Only really turned off by "the flippy screen" -- I want a screen that tilts up like e.g. gx800 or e-pl7 -- I guess cause I don't do video...
I do video too and prefer tilt screen as well. Do not need to see myself, I need to see the actors 😂
I love that you repaint your tiny cameras. I have an old E-M5 that I want to repaint. Hard part is deciding on the colors. Haha
I sincerely hope you get your perfect m43 “do it all” camera, and to be honest the GX8 is way more capable than I realised! Great vid Em!✌🏼
Very much looking forward to your thoughts on a GX8 as a daily user. I have one but still not been able to fully exploit its full capabilities.☺
Thank you!
What about the Sony a6700 😊.
The white paint job is just so cool. I can feel the self-painting is your love for the camera. I am very sorry for my bad English.
The GX8 is still my favorite m43 body, the gx9 just wasn’t an upgrade. Really hope Pany releases an update for it soon!
Actually the gx9 is a upgrade from the gx80, the gx8 is like the perfect alternative timeline in the gx history
Owned the gx8, absolutely loved it, regretted selling it immediately
Emily, great video and updates to the GX8 ... love the colors too! Yes, GH6 IIa ... phase detect, and keep the rest of the feature set as is.
Got a review of the gm5 coming this month - spoiler - it's my new favourite EDC. Gx8 has been relegated to rainy days only at the moment!
Yes I found the gx9 a bit perplexing - it was supposed to be an update but they stripped some features like you say
Gx85 II please!! Size matters…
Would you buy the GX9 iver the GX8 these days? Starting a journey with MFT
Pen-F I would love but like you said, too much $$$ 😒
I had not heard about David. His style and ability to boil down complex issues into something easy to understand was unmatched.
In the OM-1 you can switch the on-off lever on the left with the multi-mode lever on the right
i will say it again; she is adorable. i think she infuses love of cameras with an impish quality which is so rare in today's photography. she is entirely entertaining.
Honestly I’m a Sony user and the thought of doing anything micro 4/3rds seemed ridiculous, but you’ve got me intrigued… I’m definitely considering an em5 original when I want to treat myself next…
I was wondering whether since they’re a strength of particularly Olympus/om a review of the various computational photography features and which cameras have which ?
Just bought a GX8 after seeing this video. It really feels like a quality camera to hold, very Fuji like. It’s definitely a keeper.
The GX8 is a special camera! I hope soon Panasonic will release a updated version of this camera!
If it is painted by you personally, SOHTEBYS or CHRISTIES will sell it "slightly" higher :)
I own th GX8 to have a small camera beside my Nikon D800E gear.
The most exciting point on it ist the tilting EVF - awesome great !
I got it with the 20mm 1,7, which delivers superior quality.
Additionally I bought a cheap 12-32 but with fr more slower aperture.
The lens is second to the 20mm in quality and only an alternative if I need
wide angle or a mini tele lens.
I usez My GX 8 as my regular street cam. God bless Dave Thorpe. What a guy.
As always, anchored on how you present your video. Subscriber here from Philippines.
Agree, GX8 is a great buy now, more Fns than you can shake a stick at. Direct EV dial takes a little to adapt to, but is great once you have. Got mine for travel - a tad smaller than my G9.
Hello. Why isnt the british lumix trio covering the osmo pocket 3 ?
Haha I have one I'm actually reviewing it this month on my American trip. In fact I'm out shooting with it now in cold and rainy Liverpool... it is so impressive in low light!
(Though... I did buy it myself. I don't think DJI know anything about this channel haha)
I just don't really see the benefit of the GX8 over the GX85. Comparison maybe?
I've had a GX8 for MANY years as my little camera and it's a brilliant thing. If I need the best of the best I will use my Nikon, but if I want a great small camera with high quality tiny lenses, which is easy to carry and use, this is unbeatable. I'd love it if they could update this model with better AF and maybe a few more megapixels and a faster sensor read-out. I 'd rush out and buy one.
GX8 vs EM5?
Nice.
Did it come with the spray paint or was that an optional extra 😊
My back wheel on my GX80 has packed in and I'm thinking of 3 options
1 - Get the wheel fixed
2 - Get the GX8
3 - Get the GX9
1 would probably be the cheapest, if I can find someone who can repair it.
I haven't had the GX8 in my hands, but some more points:
GX8 much bigger viewfinder
GX9 no anti-aliasing filter so images sharper
@@sdrtcacgnrjrc I forgot that they still had the filter on until the GX80
Hello I am hoping you will do some more posts on this camera as it is now 2Nd April 2024 and I have not seen any. Please post something on how you have found this camera.
Here ya go 😊

@@MicroFourNerds thank you, I forgot that I looked at that post you did, and I am satisfied with your findings. I bought this camera for a very cheap price second hand of course. Thank you for your reply and I watched the post again.
Would this be better than an e-m5 mark iii? Im looking to join your micro four thirds gang and watching your videos to help figure it out 🙏
Both excellent choices! I'd say that camera is the olympus version of this actually so can't go wrong really 😊
@@MicroFourNerds thank you so much for your input!
I picked up the gx8 for my son awhile back when his Olympus died , he'll be pleased to hear it's weather sealed which we didn't know as it was raining when we went to the River of light on Friday 📷☔
Aah how cool! There's some lovely pieces this year aren't there! I really liked the projection on the building at the docks
That was cool yes , I thought the lightbulb with the butterflies was the weakest one though ,I've not had time to go though my photos from there yet , hopefully I got some good stuff
It would definitely be great to see a GH6 with Phase Detect Autofocus 👍🏾.
I told my wife that the eco packaging and zero emmisions delivery meant that me buying camera gear was actually saving the planet.
She remains sceptical😂
Also, do you take commisions for funky camera mods? lol
Great Video!
Hahaha my husband doesn't believe me either 🤣
Gx8 is great camera. But i don’t know why i like old dslr canon 70d’s pics. Can you please make comparison video of these two camera. Please try it.
Interested to hear why you didn't opt for the more recent GX9?
The gx9 is a bit strange. While it is newer (and smaller!) It lost the articulating screen and the weather sealing, and mic input. So I opted for the gx8 😊
GX8 is the better camera. The GX9 seamed to me to be a downgrade pushing people to the G9.
what states?
I hate the S5IIX! It has spoilt me with phase detect AF... now I want to part with my GH6; but only when the GH6II or GH7 appears assuming it has PDAF (it will, won't it?) Great vid Emily - keep it up. BTW, Asterix is a Gaul, I think you mean asterisk.
Where can i buy the Panasonic GX8?
Thank you
Mpb should have stock used!
That's the reason I decided against it. Wondering if the better EVF would make up for that, but I think not
Love your channel, and I see you eventually went G9II & S5 II but for non-youtuber video people reading this - DO NOT SELL YOUR GH6. Its still the best video camera on the market under 2k and isn't worth selling for what you'll get out of MPB etc. I still come back to it time and time again even though I own much newer, more expensive cameras. The video quality, the formats; its a workhorse still for at least another 3 years.
/rant over
Nice. I use my GX8 more than my G9. Both are good, and the GX7, GM1 too. Thanks. toronto canada
Yes me too, I have also the G9 but I prefer my GX8
I use CEX for my camera as they give a 2 year warranty and the stuff I have got from them is in excellent condition
i would suggest gx9 or om5
I love my GX8. Great choice and it’s fun to use.
There are a few other issues I have with my GX8 (after coming from the nikon landscape). But I haven't used newer lumixes, so I don't know if they fixed these:
* screen exposure breath: The screen will change exposure when lighting conditions change (unless manual mode).
I'm no expert so will only answer what I know
#1 not a problem (I can't remember if in settings)
#2 I set minimum shutter speed but also have maximum ISO -- the ISO setting has priority so shutter speed will go below min when required
Not having used the GX8, I don't really understand your last point
While I won’t be upgrading to a G9II from my Olympus E-M1 Mark III because MFT is gonna be my everyday carry kit; I am going to sell my Leica SL to buy a S5II as my main kit because it’s got IBIS, much cheaper batteries, BSI sensor, and articulating screen. The Leica has none of those. Not about to pay $250 for a single battery. My Leica M10’s batteries cost me $180 each so yeah I’m not doing that again 😅
I don’t like the vents on top of the S5II so I may look into putting tape over them whenever I go out in the rain.
You’re almost tempting me to buy a GX85 off of mpb but nah. I gotta control myself 😂
The s5ii is totally weather sealed even with the vents 😊
