That Rufio - Above Me riff is basically a variation of an archetypal stock metalcore riff. There are endless examples from metalcore and melodeath that sound very similar, use very similar patterns
I can definitely hear that comparison! I think Rufio's rhythm section helps set them apart from that sound a little, as elements like the drum grooves also draw heavily from 80s and 90s skate punk - think Lagwagon or RKL. That said, there's likely some metal influence in there too, given the more technical sound the band possesses as a whole.
Oh, great, ANOTHER person telling me I've been playing Blitzkrieg Bop wrong my whole life. First I learn it's actually barre chords and now it's inversions too?
Playing the 5th below your chordsthat root on the A string is an excellent way to fill out the sound if you’re playing live or acoustic or single tracking for whatever reason. Blur’s “song 2” (the whoo hoo one) does it too for the powerchords IIRC. As my jazz guitarist friend once said “you have 6 strings, might as well use them all” 😂
Thank you dude! I'm far from perfect, haha, but I appreciate the kind words. Good luck with learning the guitar, I'm sure you'll write some great music with it one day!
these videos are so good but why are they so short man i'd love to watch 1 hour breakdown of these with tons of examples and such, as a beginner guitarist i've been struggling a lot to develop a musical identity, knowing what makes each genre unique and getting tons of inspiration would be the best
Thank you! I guess mostly because I'd dread editing together a whole hour-long video, haha. A lot of people tell me they like the fact that I keep them shorter / more concise. I might experiment with longer videos in the future, but for now, I'll be sticking with the current format.
Thanks! If you search for the 'Rockband' or 'Guitar Hero' stems for certain songs, you'll be able to find them. Most of the time bands don't release multitracks of their songs, so the only way to get them is through services like URM, or those aforementioned games, as they used the stems to create the rhythms for the tracks. Hope that helps!

Rufio just played metalcore music in a major key… and it was epic 🤘
Dude I’m not even a punk guy, but these videos are so informational and helpful. Thank you!!!!!
That's really awesome to hear! I'm glad there's something in there for you, even if you're not particularly a fan of the genre 🙌
Nice to see some Rufio recognition. Scott is a friend of ours and produces all our music!
Oh that's awesome! It's nice to know he's still active, outside of posting the occasional video on his UA-cam channel. Big fan of his!
Dude, you seriously have the best channel on UA-cam
Thank you man, I really appreciate that 🙏
Agreed!
I love how much information and in-depth your videos are. Also, I love how you use Reason recording DAW as well. Reason is my DAW of choice.
Thank you! I feel like Reason users making rock-adjacent music are a rare breed, haha.
thank you so much for your awesome breakdown and insight as always
love from japan
Thank you so much for the support, it means a lot ❤
Massive fan of this type of video, would love to see more about how to properly play famous punk songs that are often taught wrong!
Rufio definietely deserves more recognition
Couldn't agree more!
Awesome breakdown, jem of a series that really plays to your strengths here thank you!!!
To me, its She - Green Day, Born To Lose - Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers and Holidays in the Sun - Sex Pistols
Oh, great, ANOTHER person telling me I've been playing Blitzkrieg Bop wrong my whole life. First I learn it's actually barre chords and now it's inversions too?
My bad 😅

Haha! Good to hear the algorithm is working in your favour 😁
awesome!. supermaket is such a great track and longtime favorite of mine.
Mine too! It's one of my favourites from London Calling, along with all the other 18 songs 🤣
Rufio is one of the most underrated bands of this era followed by No Motiv!
Awesome to see a breakdown of a Rufio song, love them!! Also, sick Daniel Johnston shirt, I just bought one recently too 🤘
Thanks for mentioning Rufio, I love them alot. Science Fiction and Above Me + White Lights are good songs
THE ANGEL ABOVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
They're awesome! Definitely one of my favourites from the more technical side of skate punk / pop punk.
Thanks! This is great!

What was the chord calculator graphic/application used in this video? It looks really simple but very useful.
Thanks! It's called Oolimo 👍
Yo can you do some Midwest emo videos?
I've got quite a few already on the channel. But I'll likely be making more on emo, in general, in the future!
