      Honestly, the thing with Iced Earth is that every singer they had, is that those singers are all the best at the stuff from their respective albums. You could maybe debate whether or not their latest album would have been just as good with Barlow on vocals. But honestly Plagues Of Babylon is an album where Stu gets to use a bit more of that gritt that he has (being previously in a death metal band). No one would have done better than him on that album. I wish John would let him use that a bit more. It's still my favourite from the last 3 albums, specifically because of his Stu's vocal performance.
      John Greely's recorded version of Travel In Stygian is better than the one with Barlow imo. I don't know what it is exactly but Barlow's singing doesn't have the same flow as Greely's. It's not that it's a bad version, I just prefer the original. Ripper singing Barlow's stuff is the same thing, Barlow singing Ripper's stuf again same thing. I think that just shows that each of those singers have put their mark on the album they did vocals for. And it's hard to replicate that.

      Hey, let's face it. Stu sings that song better. At least he sings it with straighter head voice control. I have heard the song with both and honestly, I like it more with Stu. He sings the whole "Is this my reward/ For serving God's own war/ The blood I've spilled" in one breath. Matt takes another breath after "Is this", another after "my reward", another after "serving" and another after "war". Also, you can hear a few cracks of his height. In the studio version he sings rather "Re-ward" than "reward" with the "Re-" part actually not quite in position.
      This pattern continues on further lines. That's how you know if someone has a straight head voice or not. With Tim Owens you hear the same cracks. With Stu B you don't. He sings it all in a line. Also, in Burning Times as shown here, I hear Stu singing it with more drive, perhaps because he used to sing death metal before joining Into Eternity. He may not be the original, but let's face it, he is the higher bar.

      @@tominatorxx well. I dunno about the first two singers. They kinda sucked. But Barlow, Ripper (who gets a bad rap, undeservedly) and now Stu are all amazing in their own material especially. In many cases, Stu's live versions of songs are better than on the album. I prefer his live version of Setian Massacre and the live version of Plagues of Babylon to the album versions.

    • @tominatorxx
      @tominatorxx 4 роки тому +1

      @@khellendross3573 Yeah Gene Adam wasn't a great match for a band like Iced Earth. Greely fitted well imo, his almost impish like voice worked well on Night Of The Stormrider. As for the later albums (if he had been on them), I don't think that would have worked well.
      Setian massacre is a Ripper song for me personally. But I can see how people would like Stu's version more. He can use a bit more growl on that one and that suits him (obviously) perfectly.
      And Plagues well that's Stu who nails it both on the studio version and on the live version imo. The other two albums with him, I don't know... I feel like they pushed him a bit too much to approach the songs like Barlow. Whereas on Plagues they let him do more his own thing. (Just the impression I have).

But you should give a listen to Matt Barlow, who sang for IE in the past. He has crazy range too. Where he differs from Block, he adds emotion to his singing. Block comes at you with energy whereas Barlow comes at you with emotion. Barlow tells a story with his style and takes you on a ride. I would recommend Dante's Inferno. The vocalist in this song is Stu Block. He is their 5th singer. #1 was Gene Adam and was only featured on their 1st album from 1990, #2 was John Greely and was only featured on their 2nd album from 1991, #3 was THE voice of Iced Earth by the name of Matt Barlow and joined them for their 3rd album. Matt left briefly for 2 albums in the mid 2000s, and was replaced by #4 Tim "Ripper" Owens who performed with Judas Priest for 2 albums in the late 90s. Matt Barlow came back for one album in 2008, but then was replaced by #5 Stu Block. He's been with the band for 3 albums now. The unique thing about Stu is that he can sing in the same styles as both Barlow and Ripper. So for the majority of the band's back catalog, Stu has it covered. What's interesting is that back in 1997, the band re-recorded an album with Barlow with most of the songs from the first two albums.

    Iced Earth had Matt Barlow then Ripper Owens and now a singer that's a mix between the two. He sings like Barlow in the baritone register and like Ripper in the higher register.

    Iced Earth has had AMAZING vocalists; Their 1st Gene Adams. Their 2nd John Greely, 3rd and _most popular_ vocalist, basically putting them on the map; Matthew Barlow. Their 4th who only appeared on 2 Ep's and 2 albums, but I think is very underrated (who also sang with Judas Priest on 2 albums, when Rob Halford went solo); Tim "Ripper" Owens, and then Barlow came back for 1 album "The Crucible of Man: Something Wicked Part 2" in 2008 and then retired after touring. The vocalist in the reaction is "Stu Block" from a band that was starting to get recognition "Into Eternity" (and opening for many BIG name bands), and joined Iced Earth in 2011 and has been with them ever since.
    Lots of folks are obviously recommending plenty of great tracks and albums with Matt Barlow. Live in Athens DVD/footage is a great period to see Matt do his thing. The Greeks love them, as well as "Fates Warning" who I HOPE you do someday (Try; "The Light and Shade of Things" live to start you on your journey) :).

    I just find your channel and I love it. Iced Earth is one of my favorite bands and though I love the tenure of Matt Barlow, Stu Block (the one singing in the video) is an awsome singer. If you want you can check his previous band, Into Eternity. It's Melodic Death Metal and would recommend the song Timeless Wintee

    Matt Barlow is and will always be the classic lead singer for Iced Earth, but Stu Block is a PHENOMENAL lead singer himself. I love the three studio albums and the live album Live In Ancient Kourion that he has done with Iced Earth big time. I actually love every lead singer Iced Earth has had including Gene Adams, John Greely,Matt Barlow, Tim Owens, and Stu Block alot. All of them did an amazing job on the albums they sang on.

    I've seen Stu Block with Iced Earth and his previous band Into Eternity. His range is so insane that if you didn't know better you'd think he was two completely different singers. The time I saw him in Iced Earth though was frigging amazing. I was front row. Like proper front row not like at this show. They're playing a song called "Red Baron/Blue Max" and for anyone who knows that one the part towards the end where it gets crazy Stu bends down screaming those insane high notes and dripping beer soaked sweat right into my face like 6 inches away. I was in complete awe. My ears rang for like a week. Totally worth it.
