This Might Be The Most In Depth Lesson I Have Ever Done - Van Halen Panama - Guitar Lesson
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 жов 2024
- The #VanHalen song #Panama has got to be one of my all time favorite songs. There is so much going on in this song and so many cool techniques that I had to do a seriously in depth guitar lesson on it. All of the parts are in this lesson. Rhythm, lead, fills, pick slides and more! If you make it all the way through this one you will be a better guitar player! Some many cool techniques in one song its hard to believe! Brew up a pot of coffee and get down to business! It's a great one.

You have put a lot of hard work and effort into learning Van Halen and the making of this lesson. Congratulations on your success. Jimi, Stevie, Eddie, their music lives on for eternity. Thanks for honoring Eddie. 👍🎸🙏😎✌️
Sure thing! We can all learn a ton from the greats!
People don’t realize just how hard of work that it really is. Eddie is the king of rock and roll, not Elvis.lol
Yeeaah!
I love the isolated track of his guitar. It's amazing all the little things he does in this song that get lost with the full band recording. It's crazy the huge tone he gets rolling back the gain to make the notes more clear.
For sure!
Easily the best guitar song ever. I think this is Eddie’s best work, there is so much going on in one song and every bit is just unbelievable.
Yep one of my all time favorites too. Perfect in every way.
@@BrettPapa most of all, I was remiss. Thank you for this and all your videos. Amazing job on this one especially. Apologies for not acknowledging that first.
Man, that intro. Perhaps one of the kewlest hard rock riffs ever written
Ed's best work is NO DOUBT on vh1 and fair warning. it's not even "available" for debate.
like kewl aid? @@GggA.T.-music
The breakdown section in this song is just a work of art. I don't how you can come up with something like that. I wish I had the opportunity to see him live in his prime.
We was and always will be the man!
I did see them in 1981 in Portland Oregon. It was absolutely Incredible! At the time the band was so new to me that I didn't realize was I was witnessing. David Lee Roth and all of the band were beyond belief. We had great seats, just off to the left side of the stage and slightly up. Oh how I wish I could go back to REALLY enjoy it again. RIP Eddie, he was the KING of rock.
This needs to be a tone rig rundown. Some of the best guitar sound I've heard.
Thanks! I'll see what we can do about that.
The emotionally devastating part of this is that Eddy was playing this stuff off-the-cuff and then all of us mortals struggle to learn & play it with modern technology and with hours/days/weeks/months & years of practice and still don’t get it right.
You can do it. Eddie was One of a Kind. The rest of us just need time.
“How many knew about that part?” Haha. Spot on man. Eddie is revered for his solo playing but us guitar players recognize his rhythm was just beyond devastating. That little chug on the low E is just ONE piece of evidence of that. Another is in Mean Streets. At the end after the “lord strike that poor boy down” Eddie does the pick slide (sick by the way because he feeds off the lyric and it evokes taking down the guy in the song). After that he holds the, I believe A chord, but chugs away on the low e. It’s a tricky thing to pull off. You need really good hand control so as not to interrupt the chord from ringing while you chug on the low E. Guy was a killer guitarist.
Very true! The isolated tracks make the Eddie thing even that much more impressive!
Wow!! That was the best lesson on this iconic song I have seen. What a great teacher you are. Thank you so much for taking the time to break this up into understandable chunks, that this 75 year young brain can grasp. Your the best!!
John Russell (75 year young Rocker now in a rocker ;) in the U.S.A.(Born in Portsmouth U.K)
Sure thing John! Thanks for checking it out!
Brett is a great teacher and wonderful human being. If you really want to learn. He can teach you. He did me then I started teaching my son what I learned. He was 15. He is 17 now and better than I am. It must be a young thing. Thank you Brett from 2 generations.
That is awesome to hear Eric! Glad I could help you guys out!
After 2 years of playing pretty consistently, I can find I can handle most rhythm parts in songs I attempt, but this song’s rhythm pattern definitely intimidates me lol. Eddie’s soloing was mostly what he was known for, for obvious reasons, but his rhythm’s are insane. You really have to be a great rhythm composer as well as a great lead player when you’re the only guitarist in your band, and Eddie did that better than almost anyone.
Agree 100%
Nah, he's regarded as one of the best rhythm guitarists of all time pretty regularly
Thank YOU. I’ve been playing this song wrong for 36 years! By far the most detailed tutorial I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Well done!
Thanks Daniel!
Perfect tone and feel! Wow! That setup sounds so amazingly brown! Well done.
Thanks Andy!
@@BrettPapa Hey which amp are you using here? Guitar straight into amp? What else is going on here?
Long Live The King RIP Eddie. He was the bar. No doubt. His hands were the dynamics.
For sure!
Dude! I've been playing this "ok" and I knew Eddie was amazing, but I didn't know all the hidden nuances in some of this stuff you broke down that I never heard. He was a genius. Thank you!
Yes he was! Thanks for watching!

Great job, great teacher. Once I learned Eddie was a piano player, as am I, his knowledge of piano techniques comes through, which is unlike most guitar players. Very regular and common third and fourths throughout his playing. Your lesson shows this, whether others see it or not, but has opened up a few of Eddie's tricks and playing style to me. 2 years electric guitar. 58 YO. thanks so much
Sure thing. He was a great piano player. For sure it influenced his playing.
You Are KILLING It Brett. Keep the EVH coming. Now, a detailed breakdown the Beautiful Girls. Lots of nuances in this one. Like "Im The One," got have the swing feel and slightly odd timing rhythm under the vocal. Let's do this man! Thanks for these!!!
Thank ya! Those are some tall orders! Those swings are killer! I'll see what I can do! Thanks for watching.
This was an amazingly well done tutorial. You helped me fix a couple of spots that I've played incorrectly for years. Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks for tuning in!
He truly was the man. RiP our guitar hero
Thank you Brett, I have played guitar for 40 years and was always intimidated by Eddie, never even tried. Now thanks to you I got the courage and confidence to go for it. Now I am ripping up the fretboard with a furious revenge thanks to you ..!
😊
That is awesome! Thanks!
Eddie van Halen was a technical master and musical beast. He understood both technique and feel and took it to a whole another level.
For sure!
Excellent l'artiste 🎸👍. Une très bonne continuation musicale à vous.
How you don’t have a million subs is mind boggling, seriously you’re one of the best teachers I’ve seen here on YT and TY for all your hard work you put in for us
Haha thanks man! Glad you like the vids. I guess all I can say is if you dig it share it and maybe I'll get there one day lol!
Great playing, man. Playing like Eddie is really difficult. He had such nuance, swagger, vibe. Then of course the tone was half of it. You have to get at least close for the parts to sound right. So much of his playing was built on that tone. He was a different kind of animal. Long live the king.
Yes he was! Thanks for watching!
I appreciate your shit man. Because of you, I've learned every Van Halen song that I've ever loved. You're the only one that's ever been able to explain it and show me how to do it correctly. My ears never allowed me to hear it right? Because I'm self-taught don't read music. I just do everything by ear and I had some of the stuff somewhat but watching your videos I got it nailed now I play right along with you. I just want to thank you for the free videos. You have been a big help in my progression in my playing
That is awesome to hear! Glad they helped. More VH coming soon!
You nailed that Brett. You kick a... Thank you for all the years of service.
Thank ya sir! Thanks for watching!
Man that was a lot just the second part after the bend in the solo got me it took me 2 days to do it right but I memorized it in 3 days thank you so much for making this vid I wouldn’t of done it without you 🎉😊🎸🎸
Sure thing! Thanks for checking it out!
That is some seriously nice playing. Thanks for the lesson!
Thanks Vic! You are welcome!
Most detailed Panama lesson on the internet. Subscribed!
Awesome! Thanks for the sub!
You definitely need a huge raise $$$ the best I've ever seen teaching EVH tunes.
You are definitely THE MAN ! thanxxx for all your hard work
Lol! Thanks Thomas! Thanks for tuning in!
I appreciate the time it takes to produce these videos
The MAN would be proud. Good stuff.
Thanks!
im not a guitarist but my brain MELTED when i watched this, awesome stuff!
Haha! Thanks for checking it out!
Unbelieveable tone on your rig..you should be commended for your authenticity.
Thanks so much!
Very hard song. Long and thorough lesson. Very detailed and explained also. Excellent teacher and to the tee accurate note for note. Thanks 👍
Thanks Dave! Glad it helped.
Best tutorial out there, THANK YOU! I also find it awesome that it's 55:55 in length. I thought they couldn't drive 55 😎 Brett, PLEASE tell me you did that on purpose!!!!!
Haha that's funny! Thanks for watching!
@@BrettPapa You're welcome. It's all I've been watching the last week!
Thank you soooo much! Your work on this is FANTASTIC! You captured ALL of the subtleties perfectly! PLEASE do one on UNCHAINED as well as it is all about the subtleties in the playing- especially the upstrokes. Makes a HUGE difference!
Sure thing! I have done Unchained and a bunch of other VH tunes just search for them on my channel. Thanks for watching! Glad you like them.
Amazing video! You did a fantastic job delivering at the right pace and explained all the different parts perfectly. Keep up the great work.
Thank ya!
cannot get over the tone here, Brett. siiiiiiiick
Thanks!
I seen Eddie back in like 86...i could not believe how amazing he was. Still the greatest guitar player i have ever seen live...ever and i seen alot of players over the years. I've never tried to play any eddie...but i'm bout to give it a try..thanks man.
Awesome! Such a fun tune to learn!
Hello Brett, I have been playing for 45 years (saw EVH warm up for Nugent in 78!!!) and this is the BEST lesson; EVER, THANK YOU!! Could an EVH course be in the future?
That is awesome! No I think an EVH course is above my pay grade lol! Maybe a beginner version haha.
You sir, are truly an all American badass. 🤘🏻 Excellent lesson. And your tone is always sick. Wether it’s AIC or VH or whatever. Thanks for all your hard work on this one. Hats off to you!
Thank ya! Glad you like the tone and vids!
This is fantastic. Thank you! First time I'm really making progress learning EVH.
Awesome! So glad it helped
1:27 "a bit tricky" is the understatement of all understatements. 'Panama', in my opinion, was the greatest riff of the 80's. Number two is Van Halen's 'Best of Both Worlds' but that's nether here or there.
Nope. It's the greatest riff SINCE the 80s
Not trying to be a hater but the honors of greatest riff of the 80s easily goes to Warren DiMartini for that insane intro to “Lay it Down”.
Jesus, that tone is SPOT ON!!
Haha thanks!
Great lesson. started with papa stache lesson 10+ years ago!!! thanks man!
Well thanks for hanging around again
Awesome. 🎸👍 I'm very happy about it.
Thanks for checking it out!
Nailed it, excellent tone and playing thank you for going slow! I usually watch lessons that include tabs because most go too fast for me! However, you showed exactly where to put your fingers, now getting my fingers to go there is another story!
Sweet! Thanks for watching Phil!
Can't believe how accurate that tone is, Brett. Massive. Thanks for this vid!
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
From this tutorial I can play them almost perfectly except for the pinch harmonics. Now 3 months after learning it from this video I learned pinch harmonics and it sounds so much better! Great tutorial amazing!!!
Incredibly great tutorial! I learned so much here. And the sound bro...soooo sick!
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Friggin Awesome! Just subbed and excited!!
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks, Brett. This was clearly a labor of love. I love just about everything Eddie ever did, but Panama is right at the top of the list. Thanks again.
Sure thing Wes!
Oh my goodness you are one of the greatest human beings on the face of the earth. Thank you so much for this lesson and thank you for the laughs during this lesson I had so much fun thank you! thank you !thank you!
Haha! You are welcome Aaron! Thanks for checking it out!
Thank you Brett, you did an excellent job of breaking this song down and teaching it for us. I think you do the best job of teaching all the way around !
Thanks Kevin! Glad you like the vids!
Absolutely brilliant lesson, but man how did he make this stuff up ,what a genius,,that's a lot to learn awesome, thank you 👍👍👍
Yep that's what I always wanted to know. According to him he doesn't know either lol!
Dude my brain goes haywire listening to this. It’s awesome
Haha! Good stuff by the king. Eddie was the best!
If I wasn’t already messed up in my head, now my pick is talking to me! Thanks
Awesome lesson and pick choke was hilarious.
Haha!
Probably my favorite 1984 VH tune, Thanks man 😎🎸
Sure thing!
Awesome Eddie Lesson! As far as vids and books on Van Halen go, people have been paid more to do a lot less over the years. Love the attention to detail from the up picks to all the other freaky stuff Eddie would do. For anyone wanting to learn Van Halen guitar this is one of the best ways to go about it.
Thanks for checking it out Max!
talk about HUGE tone ...man you found it ..you rock papa
Haha thanks Jason!
Pick Slides!! Thanks for this one!
Sure thing!
Holy shit man I started this video with my iPhone volume full up and you just blew my phone up with that ultimate brown sound!! That intro was out of this world good!!! You captured so much of the original tonal character it’s mind blowing!! Amazing!
Thanks! Glad you like the tone!
Take your whiskey home man great teaching ED was best ever what a loss of a one of a kind musician Rockn Rumsey
That's a great one!
Nice job Brett! I learned that song when it came out. Revisiting it again thanks to you!
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out!
Well done! Most people miss riding the lower strings while letting chords ring out when they play/teach his stuff. An excellent example of riding the bass notes is “Bottoms Up”, pretty basic rhythm but nobody has a complete and accurate lesson out there. Wanna do that one next?!
Great tune Brett! I have never learned that one but I'll check it out. I plan on doing more stuff off the second album soon.
Ya not half bad yourself there PAPA,killing it my man! This stuff is hard for me my brother, but I love trying. You're a great teacher.
Thanks for checking it out!
The sound of heaven! Man, this is gold.
Haha! Thanks!
Lesson finished. Thanks a lot man. Killer tone.
Yes! Way to go! Thanks!
Best lesson EVER!!! Thank you Brett! 🙏🤘🏼
Haha! You are welcome!
I could tell pretty much right away that this is more accurate than some of the more 'famous' tutorial channels out there. Not that I am knocking them but . . . Accurate is accurate.
Thanks Grant!
I'm not really a Van Halen type of guy but this song is so awesome. Thanks for the lesson. It'll give me something to chew on.
Sure thing!
Best lesson on UA-cam , thanks
Amazing lesson! Thank You for your time and effort!
Sure thing! Thanks for tuning in!
Brett, I really dig the emphasis on the details. I think some of what you are getting into here is the sensibility Eddie derived from "playing his amp". I think the kind of detailed inflections beyond the notes... from the "feel" to the synergy between the hand manipulations feeding off the interplay of standing in front of a cab. I think that is an important part of why he wrote and played the way he did. Fantastic too to see the "line work" of passages he chose to construct his sense of melody and swing. He really had an authentic way of playing through with imaginative playing that was mindful of the past, but progressively pushing forward.
Yep. Eddie was the man!
Brett, that is fantastic and super detailed!! I have always loved Panana, but played it kind of approximate, no excuses now! thank you so much!
You are welcome! More VH coming soon.
Yes thank you,you are a very good teacher, one of my favorites. God bless Because of you and a couple of other guys, I can't believe I can play anything from Eddie Van Halen.😊
🎸king Edward Van Halen.
You are welcome! Glad they help!
Thanks for the Deep Dive, awesome lesson.
Sure thing!
Awesome work on a truly iconic rock song. Well done!
Thank for checking it out!
Great lesson , great playing , great tone and GREAT respect to the King 👑
Thank ya!
Awesome lesson Mr. Papa. You have been my favorite Hendrix teacher on UA-cam and now you are channeling the spirit of Eddie. I would say you are ready to tour with Van Halen. Cheers!👍👍
Haha! Thanks man. Super fun learning all these old classics.
Bravo! Excellent tutorial!
Glad I "found" it .
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Papa back in the saddle ... loving it
Thanks!
Fantastic lesson, well done. I'll be learning this tonight :D
I'm not a Van Halen fan, but I love Panama, love all the little nuances in the playing.
Awesome! That song is a masterclass in feel! Thanks for watching.
THANK YOU!!!!
This is GOLD!
You are welcome!
Awesome tute for an awesome song......thank you for sharing!
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
That part you are tapping over the pick up I saw him do it with the side of his thumb up around the 12 fret. Wish I could remember exactly the spot but I think he even moved his thumb up and down some to get that sound, drove me crazy for a long time. I cant remember what live show on video he did that on but it is on one. Your video is amazing! Thank you.
Thanks for checking it out!
Man the tone is so sick
Thanks!
Dude, your tone and technique... love it.
Thanks! Glad you like it!
You have the best personality.
Easy to learn from you as well.
Great teacher.
Wow thanks! Glad ya think so. Thanks for tuning in!
Incredible enthusiasm! Makes the great lesson that much better.
Thanks Phil!
actually thought it was the isolated track in the opening excellent well done
Haha thanks!
Your tone is spot on dude
Thanks!
Great work Brett, Had a blast just watching without my guitar in hand. You even nailed the tone and every little nuance !!! Great teachings. Will definitely take a stab at learning this !!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Cool vids brett thanxxx for doing the tutorials fan since 1980 keep doing the VH👍🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Sure thing Les! Thanks for watching!
Gonna study this, just wanna say, your tone has a lot of bite and impact. Sounds great.
Thanks!
Great Lesson on Panama. I learned a lot more subtle stuff going on. I think I will break you by requesting “I’m the One”.
Thanks Craig! Yeah I know that entire tune but the swing is so tough!! If I get it close enough I will do it.
Thanks for this Brett, love these longer in detail lessons, especially the VH ones! Amazing work.
Sure thing Jamie! Hopefully more coming soon!
This is unbelievable. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Outstanding as usual.
Thank ya!
