Just a matter of letting the bass have its space, the vocals have their space, the drums keeping the time and the guitar maintaining its space. What isn’t taught early enough in guitar lessons is that while you learn the whole chord, you only need a portion of it when playing with a band. Helps to keep the song from sounding muddy. Triads were the big turning point in my playing!
Totally, I did not even get a guitar lesson about triads in the 80s and how useful they are these partial cords and what not and my God what a mindbending experience the last few years since I got back into playing guitar it’s been
Really. Where do we buy your records
One thing you have to understand is that most people who learn guitar just want to bang on open chords and sing (usually poorly). They kind of drag the entire enterprise down to their level. Triads are rudimentary music theory, yet guitarists seem to think it’s some sort of grandiose eye opening knowledge.
@@jcruisioso5975 Kmart
@@sigiligus They are grandiose eye opening knowledge because the guitar isn't the most intuitive instrument from a theory perspective and the cowboy chord became king because giving someone the keys to play basic songs felt like quick and fun progress (just like learning the basic minor pentatonic scale). It would be insanely easier to teach triads and do 3 notes vs learning all the barre shapes, but it's just not how the instrument is taught to 90% of players, regardless of whether they're "dragging the entire enterprise down to their level" or want to be the next Van Halen. My aspirations were to be more than open chords and singing but I started 25 years ago with what I was given; open chords. I was years into playing before I unlocked triads.
Eddie was a genius and a lot of people don't realize how great his rhythm playing was, they focus on his lead work.
I love all Eddie's guitar playing... Lead solo, strumming, rhythm, tapping, trem picking, finger picking, dive bombs, palm mutings, harmonics... you name it, EVH got it 😎
Killer riffs for sure
those people are probably randy rhoads fan boys
@@backtoshallabal6662I’m a Randy Rhoads fanboy and Eddie is one of my favorites as well. I see more Angis Young type fans bashing Eddie but that’s just me.
@@thetribalist6923 I guess it depends angus was good but not eddie or randy level
Hey gang I forgot to mention I’m tuned down 1/2 step😅
its okay. i had the video sped up!
One of the first chords I was taught was that d triad. And my instructor always had me tune down a half step. He played in a working band and they were always in E flat.
Well that just messes everything up for me 😂😂😂
so whats the big deal ??? copied them all starting almost 45 yrs ago
De rigueur
That D shape is what I call the Brian May chord. Brian uses it all the time as well. Hammer to Fall, We Will Rock You, I Go Crazy just to name a few.
Love that you pointed this out
True, Brian & Eddie were friends. Coincidence?
Was just about to mention Hammer To Fall. Another great simple riff.
@@steverherb Eddie always said Brian was one of his influences. Not surprised they use similar approaches to riffs.
Ah man I've been calling it the Brian May chord for years also! Glad I'm not the only one😂
Robert,
Thank you so much for this! I'm 62 and have been playing in some capacity since I was 13. I am strictly self taught mostly by using my ears and centuries of trial and error.
I use the chords that you featured today and the different structures all of the time. Until today, I used them but had no idea of their names or relationship. Today, you gave me a Rosetta Stone and I can never thank you enough for this gift! I've taken what you gave me and expanded it it a couple of layers deeper. All of a sudden, I know the outlines of a crap load of classic rock/metal songs and dropped the outlines of 3 new songs for me to finish writing! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! As Papa always told me, "Better late than never!"
Ed was an amazing player, he was one of the best rhythm players, lead players and performers all in one at the exact same time and that was his genius besides his compositional work, he knew how to recreate using what he knew over and over and that is why the VH music whether DLR or Hagar fronted days still rocks and thrives on with guitarists….didn’t intentionally leave the Gary C days out, there was some great guitar work on that album as well.
I like the artist focused lessons the most because whether it is John Sykes, Jake E Lee, Vito Bratta, George Lynch, EVH or Vai…it really focuses on the players that made us want to play so if we can pick up sprinkles of their magic and incorporate it into our playing maybe we can make our own magic from that knowledge.
Your guitar channel is one of the BEST on UA-cam!
Thanks Mark :)
the courses are really good too. I've purchased several of them
I agree. The simplicity doesn’t reflect poorly on him but instead demonstrates his creative genius. So glad I got to see him perform twice.
Yeah smoke more
Not the biggest Van Halen fan, I like mostly the DLR era, but anything EVH has my attention. EVH is a treasure trove of riffs, tricks, and inspiration on guitar. It's near impossible to hear an EVH riff and not want to pick up the guitar.
Yeah I'm with you , the Dave era was the best. Everything after that sucked IMO , they had a much rawer sound with him then with Sammy. Eddie sounded to watered down during that period....
@@mikeg6666Everything after that sucked😂😂😂 Yeah you do!
Sammy;cant stop lovin you, love walks in, LOVE love gagme!! Dave; AINT TALKIN BOUT LOVE!!!!!
@@richardclark. That's what I'm sayin! Everything after Dave is garbage!
I always wondered what Billy Corgan was on about with EVH being an influence.
I hear it now. That D major variant especially.
Eddie's musicianship was right off the charts. Made it all look so easy. Just got really bummed when I realized I had to go back and make my comment past tense. R.I.P. Eddie
Love it! Got me pumped to grab the guitar and practice these!
I remember when I decided that cowboy chords, power chords, and playing riffs wasn't getting me anywhere...I decided to sit down and learn my triads and inversions. I suddenly started noticing them used all over the place...particularly these three shapes. It's a bit of an eye opener, much like noticing how many solos use the pentatonic scale once you learn it.
I am building a course around how these three shapes apply in open tunings also, because they do. Also these shapes apply to Banjo and Ukulele. I haven’t found anything else that does. Triads are the way
I've only ever heared my dad use the term "cowboy chords"... I thought he made it up!
@@motorhead281 I've only heard the term from guitar channels on UA-cam.
@@nathanallen9291 triads on consecutive strings made me appreciate why standard tuning has that major 3rd between the G and B strings rather than just 4ths between all 6 strings.
More Eddie Van Halen stuff?
Um... Hell Yeah!
Another great video.
I could listen to you talk about Eddie's guitar playing all day long.
Robert you did a picking exercise years ago I found on your channel covering the exact same thing. A D E in several positions on the neck using various shapes. It totally changed my playing and helped me so much. Thanks
Great video Robert, I will be practicing this today.
Thanks
Love seeing you show evh chords and explaining
Thanks for the tips, these can be applied for a variety of other song types, appreciate the help and inspiration!
Great video. I could have had you go on for hours on this. Thanks as always.
Thanks so much for this lesson. (Posting the chords on the right of the screen in the video also helps out greatly) Thanks so much! 👍💯
Eddie was a genius when it came to making the same chord inversions sound so much different from each other. One of my guitar heroes.
Years ago, I learned a bunch of Van Halen songs. Not the lead parts, but the rhythm parts. Learning those songs did wonders for my right hand technique. My guitars at the time were a late-eighties Kramer Baretta and Kramer Pacer, the USA version.
One guitarist, who plays VH really well, said he felt the rhythm parts were as challenging as the lead parts.
Cool guitars both of them.
Excellent stuff. Very practical. Very helpful! Thanks!
Love the lessons, thank you! Someday I’ll have my own frankenstrat. 🔥
Keep em coming, Robert!! Great lesson
Oh yeah, keep doing the Eddie lesson videos...between you and Uncle Ben (and his 5150 video), I am learning and appreciating so much EVH. This was awesome Robert!
Yeah, ol' Ben definitely inspires us to play "more better" for sure 😉...
5150 ... there's another one!!
Save this to my playlist for later lovin those cords
Great insight amigo thank you!
This is a lesson on how the greats develop their signature sound. This is fascinating.
Great info and chops!
Part of what I love about your teaching is that you're teaching the "simplicity" of what Eddie played... just playing it better than the vast majority of the world. Thanks... what you provide is so valuable for understanding the genius that was EVH.
Great stuff Robert....any VH always has my attention! Keep up the good work! Peace!
Duuude you unlocked me with this video.
Just goofing around ripped out perfect "Best of Both Words" picking riff.
You didn't just teach me a riff, you taught me how to Eddie.
Awesome lesson Robert Thanks so much. I knew some of it but this one made it make a lot more sense. One of the best Eddie lessons I've seen.
Another great vid!! Keepin it real 😎👍 You brought out some great examples, and you are making the important points that most/all of these complex sounding arrangements are rooted in those magic 3 chords - major chords nonetheless - at the center of it all. Reminds me of when I figured out Dance the night Away. I was dumbfounded that I was just flowing with E-B-A/E-A-B - you really hit a 'NO WAY' moment on some of the greatest songs!
best of both worlds is the same chords too in the verse
* I guess I should have waited to mention that before not finishing the video lol
Man that's awesome stuff, thanks for the video !!!!!
Thank you for this!!!
Absolutely love these tutorials man. The mutual love for EVH and a rediscovering of just how amazing he was.
This is excellent. This is how I learn best learning theory and actual application and context. Thank you.
Love your videos and your playing. Keep doing it their so educational and entertaining
Great lesson! Love Eddie's style but have always been intimidated to learn it, now I'm ready for a deep dive-bomb 😁 Thanks!
I find when grabbing the guitar there are the go-to chords and patterns I'm always playing when noodling and warming-up. Then i play with the shapes to make it interesting and poof, voila, that sounded pretty good! The guitar lends itself more to certain chords/keys by nature. Can totally relate to Ed but maybe I'm biased since he was a top influence.
Thank you for the inspiration!
Nothing was ever more satisfying than when you figured out an Eddie Van Halen part. I completely agree with you. And then to get his timing down was even better
You are brilliant the way you dissected those songs
This is very eye opening for me,great lesson.Thank you
Awesome profile pic :)
I knew about the half step. Thanks!
Same chords in 3:16. Thanks Rob!!!! Picking up my guitar now!
Geeeeeeez! Thanks a lot for this M.Baker!!
He used the last one you showed I in dance the night away..high end of a major with the high E open,. Good stuff I love your channel 👍
You nailed that Runaround intro! Very cool!!!
Great lesson ❤ thx Rob
Really interesting tips and insight. Amazing how Eddie capitalized so well on some simple ideas.
Great stuff please keep em coming we all love if a lot bro teach us things from live without a net show !!!!
amazing video Rob. Thank you.
Hey Rock Star, the Frankie looks great and so was the lesson. Please keep em comin'! ❤ 🎸 🎸 🎸
Love this. TY Robert!
Hey man your awesome great run down of eddies stuff thanks much
I’m a huge VH fan and yes, the Sammy era! This is your most awesome video ever. I discovered these things for myself while taking guitar lessons about 2 years ago. Creativity isn’t necessarily using all the chords, it can be using a few and making it sound like so much more, and Eddie was a master of this. Thanks for sharing this!
Great video dude! Without question, Eddie was, is and will always be the MASTER! No one else cracked the code of rhythm, lead, feel, tone, songwriting, performance and virtuosity like him! He is the full package folks! You need not search elsewhere! VH4EVER!
Love the Eddie stuff Robert!thank you so much!❤ keep 'em coming!
Just found your channel. This is great information and thanks for passing it on. i understand theory, but at a bast level, and this just helps open up music and all you can do with the same progression. I'm subscribed now.
Thanks Kevin and welcome to the channel.
Great lesson! EVH was a masterful player. Thanks for this insight
This video was amazing man!!
Excellent ... thanks for sharing 👍👍
That was really good nice job Rob
You the man… voice/ style/ chops… keep going
Awsome lesson thanks Robert
Wow! Dude, you are incredible! You are a true musician!
Excellent video. Love the short form and some great examples. You can see how Eddie influenced a generation and beyond.
As a guitarist, this is the stuff I need to hear. Thank you!
Good stuff Robert Van Halen is an awesome start to the Guitar learning adventures
I'll be happy if I can learn some of these! Thanks! Subscribed for more tips!
Im always tuned Eb. Great nice video
Welp! Just found my absolute favorite video! So much was unlocked in this video and I can’t thank you enough!!! Cheers!!!
Gotta love Eddie. Great lesson!!
Thanks Robert! Made my day!
Same feeling I experienced as a bass player when I nailed Jaco's version of Amerika
This is what the entire methodology I am building out revolves around. It goes so much deeper than EVH. This is such a good call out.
Very cool! Thanks man!
When I first started getting into playing my friend/teacher showed me how if you knew how to play a little of anyone, you usually knew how to play a lot of them because they liked to base their stuff around the same chords and chord shapes. It just opened so much music to me. The only thing is that it doesn't apply to The Beatles because every time they learned new chords they wrote whole albums around them. lol
My wife and I really liked your "shreddy blues"!
Glad to see you back to some lessons again.
Good to hear your past the rut, happens to everyone, your lessons are terrific that is why I have bought several, this one is cool as to make Eddie Approachable. Thank you!
Great video as usual. Maybe you could show how the "F" chord shape is really just the bottom portion of the open "E" barre chords. A great VH song for that might be "Dance the Night Away". Cheers!
One thing I like about that inverted D chord shape is that it’s used in 316 and Randy used it in the verses for Crazy Train.
It's incredible what was going on inside of Eddie's head when he was creating these riffs. It's one thing to be an awesome player and a whole different SPECIAL level to intent them. WHAT A DUDE !!!
thanks man, now i feel inspired
Really enjoyed this video 👍🏻👏🏻🎸
Nice lesson, great guitar 🎸 chords.
I was that way with Slash. Slash is the reason I picked up a guitar at 7 years old in 1988. The first Slash solo I learned in its entirety was the Sweet Child O' Mine solo in like 1994. I was so excited that I learned the whole Appetite for Destruction album. It was 1994, and I was a broke 14 year old, so it was all by ear. It was a months long deep dive into Slash's playing where I studied and practiced nothing else but that album. It's still one of the best times of my musical life. I wish I could relearn them all again for the first time. It was so much fun! I never did a deep dive on EVH, but believe me I was over the moon when I learned Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. I can't imagine kids today trying to learn Polyphia riffs. To me Tim Henson is the modern day EVH. Great video!
Love these mini EVH lessons!!
This made me smile so much!!! I cried when The world lost him. He was part of my entire life And I never even met him but I felt his soul all my life through his music.
Thanx for taking the time to make this!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Great vid. You just opening up my guitar playing world in 7 minutes. 🤘
That is Awesome Thanks for sharing. 😎🎸🤟
5150 would be a good example using the triad chords with the bass note added.
For sure
Man, you are the best! Keep doing your vids. I have been playing these same chords forever. I’ve always been intimidated by Eddie playing, but when I realized I have been playing the same courts, he plays the whole world open up to me.. keep showing us how it’s done. You make the man proud! Maybe one day you could get Wolf on your show to let us all in on a few more secrets!! Wouldn’t that be cool? Yes it would!
Amazing video and tone... I can see the Fractal Edit screen on the Mac is it a stock preset? 🙏
My first “Real” lead guitar player in my band was playing Eruptions note for note at age 13!
That was awesome…Thanks!
