Freddie couldn't read music, he taught himself to play piano, never had a voice lesson. Roger Taylor numerous times described Freddie's voice, when he was first getting together with Roger & Brian as their band Smile lost its lead singer, as a "controlled bleat" and I always thought, "What???" But... though I've been a fan since 1973, have heard Bohemian Rhapsody live twice and recorded a billion times, watching reactors I finally heard what Roger's talking about. Listen to the BoRhap official video. When Freddie first stands up, steps to center stage and sings "Mama, ooh ooh ohh, I don't wanna die..." Listen closely to that particular "Mama" because, yes, it's a controlled bleat. You rarely hear it because, typically, he'd do another take in the studio when it happened; but it was left in Bohemian Rhapsody on purpose-- various theories as to why. And, live, as the years progressed, you don't hear it at all. That's why he's a Legend-- he took what obviously was an enormous gift he was born with and taught himself how to control it, give it power and grit, soft tones, incredible range, in other words, THE voice we all now know as Freddie Mercury's. So glad to see you back, bro. I was a psych counselor for 20+ years and worked a lot with clients with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Bravo to you for speaking out, and just know we are all here for you and wishing you the very best.

I'm from Denmark - born in 1951 - and I do not know Queen - a part from We are the champions - and Melancholy Blues! - Maybe others - not being aware of it. You are teaching me a lot about Queen - in my time I was more occupied with The Beatles and ^Stones* and Simon and Garfunkel - and Danish bands of course. It's a joy to be taught by you - - thank you .

Love that song. Freddie's piano playing is instinctual. Loads of people can read music and play the notes, but Freddie feels it and makes us feel it.

I think he just wanted to play the Blues. His lyrics are always so well thought out. He said that the melody came first and he had a hard time coming up with the lyrics but they always amaze me.

I could can just imagine sitting in one of those old smokey jazz bars..listening to Freddie at the piano. Sort of 40s to 50s style...love this song.. Freddie used to think his piano playing was mediocre at best! Brian and Roger said he was brilliant and he was a pleasure to play with...

The sheer diversity of Queen's music was what really drew me in. NATO and DATR are just a mash up of so many musical styles, plus their own unique sounds - watch The Making of A Night At The Opera to really appreciate just how far ahead of their time and how musically gifted they were. No comparison.

Awesome reaction! I completely agree, the guys of Queen are a bunch of wizards, their music is nothing short of an eternal magic all its own and they just make everything better. Your reactions are among the best! I don't know if you already know this, but Brian May struggles with depression too. His music, staying busy and performing are some ways of his coping with it. Quite a bit of his solo work refers to it like "back to the light", "resurrection", "I'm scared', etc. He is on instagram, fyi.

I liked your observation about Freddie's piano playing and the 'metronome'. In one of his his interviews, Brian said something like "Freddie is a metronome". His piano playing was so precise, as was his ear. When they did overdubs Fredde was always exactly right. Good to see you back. I look forward to your reactions...you are my favorite UA-camr!

Seeing as you're concentrating on the excellent deeper cuts of Queens back catalogue, may i suggest you give the funky brilliance of 'Fight From The Inside' a listen! Written by Roger, who plays every instrument on the recording, this songs irrepressible groove puts most dance bands to shame, while retaining the crucial rock roots that make Queen the unique artists they truly are! Cheers.
