I can't listen to this song without imagining them in an old time smokey jazz club. Freddie on an upright piano, John with a standing bass, Roger on a scaled down kit & Brian on a stool leaning against a wall with his red special. 😀

One of the things I like most about Queen is that they were never afraid to take risks and try any genre. They never wanted to be boringly consistent. The next album is a prime example of this approach. Looking forward to it!

Isn't it beautiful, my favorite on the album. Freddie never lets you down. Critics were always insinuating Queen was breaking up, Queen members argued, but like siblings. Many of the critics were horrible towards them. Great reaction

This is such a pretty song, a soft and soothing way to end the record. Thank you for reacting to this wonderful album. My mind wanders to the lounge of a nice restaurant. I take a seat at the piano bar, slowly sipping my last drink of the evening. There is cigarette smoke circling in the subdued light and the air smells a bit of stale beer from former spills on the carpet. There is a glowing red candle on each table, couples feeling the romance of the evening, two people slow dancing in the corner. The tip jar on the piano is half full, and the piano player is hoping it will be filled by the end of the evening. Freddie did such a great job at painting a vivid picture with this song.

What can I say, I love this album, one of their most eclectic and raw in some songs. When I was 8 years (I'm 51 now), when I was alone at home, I played the record at full volume, and I screamed and jumped on the couches with Sheer Heart Attack, it was the heaviest thing I had ever heard in my life, and my mom hated that song... So many good memories with Queen, and I still listen to them today and they continue to amaze me... I hope you want to continue with the journey, the change that is coming is tremendous, but it is one of the most exciting discographies I have ever heard, along with David Bowie's... Greetings from Argentina!

great comment... they're not imitating anything... they're making art and it's coming from the soul and 100% genuine. I hear it as a more a little Marlene Dietrich/Edith Piaf type of vibe rather than an Autumn Leaves/My Favourite Things jazz thing...

    Nice one Justin.
Wonderful as an old Queen fan watching you go thru their stuff. When it's hard to pick an album fav, you know you've got sucked in.
Whatever style or genre they took on, or intimidated, it always had the 'Queen' stamp, nobody was ever left in doubt of it been a Queen song.
    Looking forward to 'Jazz'.
    Thank you.

  • @j0hnf_uk
    @j0hnf_uk 6 місяців тому +6

It's a slow, bluesy song with jazz influences. Sang from the heart, (unsurprisingly), and eerily comforting in some ways. The kind of thing you'd want playing in the background if you were in a bar drowning your sorrows. As a Queen song, it's well, Queen. They try their hand at everything and interpret it in whatever way they see fit. Whether it hits the mark is purely subjective, but there's generally some nuance that resonates somewhere within to the point of acceptability, or not, as the case may be.
I look forward to the reactions to the Jazz album. The first track in particular will be interesting to say the least.

So Justin will move on to JAZZ, This is Queen on speed then they take a picnic in the swiss alps then Roger goes to a disco while Brian gets transported to a ball in the 40's, for me Queen's most chaotic album but one of their highlights, the deep cuts are some of their best Dead on Time and Let Me Entertain You, do not tire of these tracks, good luck

I'm a big big jazz fan (600 LPs) and I always go back to this as being one of the reasons. I get the non-swinging comment to a degree but I think Freddie's piano is great especially. I think there is too much in the jazz community about what is and isn't jazz these days and I don't care for those discussions. It's just music at the end of the day. So much variety on this album.... a transition away from the big productions of Races and Opera to something more direct. I'd still say this might be my #4 or #5 fav Queen album though...

Ok. Controversial to some, this is actually my favourite on the record. It’s so groovy, and it’s a really different entity to the rest of their catalogue. I’ve never heard any other songs like it. Also, I love it when Queen go soft. And Freddie’s voice just works so well in this genre.

I really like NOTW - it’s my fourth favorite album - ANATO, SHA, and Queen II are ahead… But I’m interested to see your take on Jazz - perhaps a misleading title, where it still has those classic harmonies but it’s drifting even more to “conventionality”.

It's easy to say "Write better songs" but please remember that Queen released an album every single year from 1973 to 1978 and even 2 albums in 1974 with Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. And they did all that while being on tour almost constantly. I mean, try pulling that off. With that in mind, Spread your Wings is quite amazing, isn't it? You must have these "weaker" songs in order to let the others shine. But I always said that 90% of the other bands would have killed for one song like a Queen song - even in the 80s phase of the band which to me is not really good compared to the 70s era. But you'll get to that. Thanks for the great content. REALLY curious about Jazz - especially the opener.

Punk was the focus of much of the British press at the time but never caught on among my peers in high school at the time. Also; Queen could be prog mostly in the sense of mixing different stylistic elements and experimenting with production BUT most of the actual songs aren't prog.

😂 Watching you go through the albums so far to compare them was funny. It's the conundrum every Queen fan faces. Just when you think you've got it sorted, you remember a couple of tracks that throw your rankings out. With so many surprises on each album, ranking them seems almost redundant. Brian really stands out on this album. The quality and diversity in his writing challenges Freddie's reputation. This is probably the last really bombastic album. From here on, things tone down a bit. Fewer epics, more hooks.

A lot of Queen songs are better live. Sheer Heart Attack being one of them. It was an encore and they made it so fast it was absolutely killer to play. Check out Hammersmith 1979 where Freddie pushes over a speaker and throws his and Brian's mics to give it the full punk vibe. He then can't find a mic to sing the last bit! The band ended up ignoring critics because the public still loved them and that's what mattered. Melancholy Blues is Freddie's voice and piano skills at their best. Gorgeous melody. Looking forward to your reaction to Jazz.

A truly lovely song, perfect album closer. Jazz has a lot of great songs, but also some that don't hit quite as well. After that you have The Game which is a weird one. There's some absolute classics, but a couple of really bad ones. Then, if you skip the Flash Gordon soundtrack, you get Hot Space. From that point onwards a very different band.

I don't know a ton of jeff beck but no I wouldn't say jeff beck is specifically jazz at all. Yes this is hinting at, insinuating, copying a jazz style. You can tell by the playing that it's not 'authentic' though. Not saying it's bad... just saying there's a difference.

Yeah they are a rock band who dabbled in prog. It’s probably bc they came around during the height of prog. And people call bohemian rhapsody prog bc it’s got multiple sections. Lazy. You’re right, they are a theatrical rock band.
Give Spread your wings another try. Maybe it’s a grower. Maybe it would have hit better 15 years ago.

Read enough of those interviews and you learn: Robert Christgau was an idiot. Robert Hillburn was an idiot. Lester Bangs was an idiot. I like this album, but don't love it. It feels to me like a bunch of songs they sort of made up on the spot. As if they had exhausted everything they had from their early days up to the burst of creativity that was spread across A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. But it feels like the well was sort of dry when they started work on this one. In some ways that worked to their advantage because the ideas weren't based on something they thought was cool back in 1969, but could be more fresh and innovative. The minimalist rock style on a bunch of the songs doesn't have much staying power for me personally, but it definitely positioned Queen at the front of the pack in terms of rock trends in 1977.

My two cents (or just one cent) on the song: It sounds like Freddie here envisioned himself as Ella Fitzgerald or Bessie Smith and proved to be neither. I have nothing good to say about this lazy rehash of a song.
