    Love it. Mine's an '02 and very similar to yours. Gold and all. Stiff suspension is crazy even just on dirt roads shakes shit all over the place. Need to sort out storage badly.

    My gq came with near new 2 inch lift with tough dogs when I got it, way too harsh in the valving, couldn’t wait to get those F’ing things changed out, my budget was limited so tried outback armour, not bad especially for the price, rides better than previous. Had those for 18 months with no problems. Outback armour recently released an adjustable version with a larger bore than mine for the patrols for $$880 set/4. Well worth a close look at. But I’m booked for this Monday morning for a set of OME BP51 to be fitted. Im hoping they’ll give me the ride I’m looking for over rough corrugated roads. Time will tell. (I might have a set of good 2nd hand shocks for sale at the right price if you’re keen! 😉) ......will let you know how the new OME’s go.....

    Used remote res for two and a half years biggest problem was the hose going from the shock to the res being the nature of 4wding the rocking, bouncing, and vibrations didn’t do so well.
    the res hose on mine blew from rubbing another blew at the connection point of the hose going to the shock another one was the seal to the res started leaking.
    Replaced everything twice which cost me a fortune ended up going back to mono tube shocks.
    First set where Drivetech remote res then l went to superior engineering remote res the adjustability of them and how they preformed over corrugations and general dirt roads was good to be able to adjust softness to what environment l was driving in.

    I feel your pain with the suspension. I have kings springs in my 2000 GU. Front is upgraded to take the steel bull bar and winch, rear is preloaded for 500kg plus. Sites level when towing the van, but empty it feels like it has steel rods for suspension, feel all the small bumps etc on the road. Really need to look at a more suitable setup.

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 6 років тому

      Has your winch got steel cable or dyneema rope fitted? That seems to be the main issue when going for spring sets generally labelled as suited to "steel bullbar, dual battery & winch" I went for that setup originally but changed the fronts for a slightly lighter set as even when fully loaded (I fit my roof top tent as far forward as it can be) it doesn't drop anywhere near as much as the rear. If I stand on the bull bar, it drops considerably so I'm guessing it's in the sweet spot & if I had steel cable in the winch it would definitely drop. If you're running dyneema you could try slightly lighter front springs & you may be surprised how different it feels.

      Yeah those 500ks would feel pretty rough with no load! Looks like a few of us suffer from the black art of suspension tuning.

    What happened to the old 2.8 GU? She was a mint rig, and love the sound of a 6cyl. Which motor do you prefer and why?

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  6 років тому +2

      Yeah the old 2.8 she was a beauty. A woman happened and it had to go 🙁 absolutely agree the sound of a straight 6 turbo diesel is musical! 4 cylinder diesels just don't do it for me in that regard! I think that if the 3.0 doesn't blow up I'd say it's the better motor, a bit more power, more driveable, better economy etc...but over 6 years in the old patrol I did come to respect that mighty little 2.8!

  • @WesternAustraliaNowAndThen
    @WesternAustraliaNowAndThen 6 років тому +2

    The rig is looking good, not quite the Subaru but you have to make do I guess :) I always worry about carrying liquid up high though due to the change in the centre of gravity.

      @Alex.G  6 років тому +1

      The Subaru was in a league of it's own! Bloody weapon! Yeah I don't like carrying liquids on the roof rack either, fortunately it's not often I'd have to carry that much fuel with me!

  • @gaj5701
    @gaj5701 6 років тому +1

    Remote Res shocks are good, but unless your running superflex type arms which need more travel when rock crawling & smashing out thousands of K's on the worst corrugations in the country you probably don't need them. Same for adjustables, for most they're a gimmick & normally get adjusted within the dampening range you get from a standard shock so the extra cost isn't worth it. Best thing to do is have your vehicle weighed on each wheel, not just front to back, in normal day to day mode & then also fully loaded to see what weight range you're dealing with for each wheel & then speak to a suspension specialist who can advise which springs & shocks to get or spend hours googling what to go for. Generally springs have a bigger effect on ride feel so maybe look at those first. As for shocks, the larger internal bore ones hold more oil & have more surface area so stay cooler but any of them will boil if it's not matched to the weight so weighing it properly is actually key to getting it right.
    I'm currently running Dobinsons 2" 200kg constant springs & Superior Engineering shocks in my GU. Totally empty it sits around 3" lift & is pretty harsh, however fully loaded up it sits nicely at a fraction under 2" & feels far nicer, so there's always a compromise as the springs are designed for the weight I carry so without it they aren't in the sweet spot for a good ride.

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  6 років тому

      That's some solid information there mate thanks! So how about air bags to help deal with that difference between laden and unladen? Would that help get a little closer to "best of both worlds" with comfort and load carrying?

    • @UncannySense
      @UncannySense 6 років тому

      I personally run a dobinson kit at the moment and am happy with them so far. I usually adhere to the K.I.S.S school of thought. the more complicated you make a system, the more possibilities of failure. I am sure air bags and adjustable shocks are good i was tempted to go Ranchos too, but I think a complete 50mm/2" suspension lift kit and bigger profile tyres make better financial sense with an everyday budget in mind. 275's or 285's with pressure adjustment should buffer the ride better.....If i had a airlocker then air bags might be feesable considering you can tap into the same air supply and get 2 jobs out of 1 piece of kit. If i had to get my suspension again however, I would have gone dobinson springs and rancho 9000's shocks as i found out afterwards that the price of ranchos were not that much more compared to the dobinson shocks. But I am sort of okay with considering Dobinsons are Aussie made. I hear lovells are ok too but i am only going off what i read in forums.

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 6 років тому +1

      Air bags can be a bit problematic as they effectively take the suspension out of the equation & give less deflection under load therefore creating a fulcrum point for any weight behind that point. I've seen cracked chassis on some well kitted out vehicles due to air bag fitment so I'd personally avoid them. Basically, your suspension is designed to sag under load as it will have a sweet spot for optimal performance & also your rear brakes will work correctly as your load sensing valve will open as the weight increases. The trick is balancing the front & rear sag unser full load rather than attempting to eliminate it like most people do. You may need lighter springs in the front as you run an alloy bar to get this correct, but if you find you're looking at really heavy rears, look to get the coil tower brace mod done as the GU's are a bit weak there 👍

    @Intents - Hi Alex. I'd be interested in knowing what diff ratio you are running - in one of your other videos, you capture some footage where your gauges are showing 100kph at 2200rpm whereas I'm pulling 2550rpm for the same speed. Our tires are slightly different - I'm running the standard 265/70x16, whereas you are running 265/75x16 giving you about a 3.4% drop in rpm for the same speed. My compliance plate tells me that I have the HG43 diffs fitted, so a 4.375:1 ratio. I would have thought your Patrol would have been running the same, but that looks not to be the case. Can you advise. Thanks, Stephen

    • @Alex.G

      Interesting! Is yours an auto too? I checked my compliance plate and have the same diff number as you

    • @stephenshortt3665
      @stephenshortt3665 4 роки тому +1

      @@Alex.G Ah, I didn't know you could get an auto behind the ZD30 in a GU1, GU2 or GU3 - I thought they were all manual only. That likely explains it. I'll have a look at the auto ratios and compare them to the manual ratios to work out what to change my diffs to - on top of all the NADS, I've had my ECU remapped so I'm getting a good 50% more torque and about 25% more power than standard, so my current ratios are too short for what I'm doing. I suspect 4.1's with 285/75x16, may be the way to go but 3.9's with 275/75x16 may also work. Do you know whether your ECU has been remapped, or is your GU chipped? Stephen

    How do u compare the rd28 to the zd30? As in Power and fuel economy?

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  6 років тому +1

      Better on both counts for sure! But not by a great deal. The power is adequate, and a lot easier being an automatic. I think stock figures were about 120kw for this engine vs 99kw for the RD28. Fully loaded like this it consumed 12.5 litres/hundred on the highway at 100km/h . That blew out to around 16.5 litres/hundred in mixed speed high and low range 4wd.

    • @toddmillar4041
      @toddmillar4041 6 років тому +1

      I'm more interested in how the power to weight ratio goes in the soft sand. I'm 4WD lacking at the moment and planning my new fishing/ camping rig. I was thinking Patrol with 4.2TD but they are on the shelf in between the hens teeth and rocking horse shit. As pointed out the 3ltr has a bad reputation but are readily available at a reasonable price which gives me more cash for upgrading (suspension, batteries, draws etc). A lot of your vids show beach driving between Perth and Lancalin, same area I will predominantly use mine.

      It will be a while away Drew. I have 2 trips that have been sitting on the hard drive for months which I still have to edit 🙁

      Intents Offroad fair enough mate, editing is so time consuming. Anyways look forward to it, really enjoy your trips mate. By the way I third the request for the clip about the mapping software. I’m looking at options at the moment as well.

    I reckon you should get it lifted 3” or 4” and get some 35’s.

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 6 років тому +4

      retry tobuy there's no engineer in the whole of Australia who will legitimately approve 35s on a patrol without spending around $15k+ modifying almost everything in the driveline, brakes, steering to cope & even then you could still fail the required tests leaving you with a worthless build. Believe me, I've been trying to work it out & it's not worth it for the average 4 wheeler. Of course, you could run illegal & not insured in the slightest but that really won't help the 4wd community in any way for future negotiations on regulations...

    • @Phil_McAvity
      @Phil_McAvity 6 років тому +1

      GAJ who said anything about getting a engineer to approve anything!?

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 6 років тому +1

      All well & good for 100% off-road use, but if you take out a family car on the highway, totally accidentally, you may find the coroner's court pull out an engineer who can prove beyond any doubt your vehicle's braking performance was affected negatively by your choice of tyre size & you'll be avoiding bending in the shower for a while no matter how much you want to pick your soap back up.
      It's up to the individual, but if I was a well viewed UA-cam channel, there's no way I'd run 35s on a Patrol, especially not in West Oz where the regulations are pretty black & white on what you can & can't have legally.

      Agreed it would look awesome! And go hard offroad. But learning a little more about insurance recently the implications are pretty scary! Also, I'm keeping this one a bit more modest for fuel economy and a bit nicer on the long trips 🙂

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  6 років тому

      Yeah I looked into it before doing the LED, but decided the conversion looked too tricky for me to tackle. And the $1200 pair I mention are for projecta refit lights completed by the guy who sells the kits.

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  6 років тому

      +Jack Goodman Not too bad hey! Remove the steel clips, whack it in the oven for 40 minutes at 120 degrees and then use a flat head screwdriver to pry the glass away from the plastic. 120 is just hot enough to soften the glue. Theres a write up on intentsoffroad.com if you search headlights

      I would really like the spare carrier to get the weight off the door especially. But I don't need the extra rear protection cos I don't drive gnarly tracks, and those things add heaps of weight. If I could find a lightweight trimmed down version I'd be stoked
