- Russian missiles landed in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv as NBC News’ Ali Arouzi was interviewing former MSNBC analyst Malcolm Nance. Officials say at least seven people were killed in the airstrike.

I love how he's frantically jumping around and breathlessly counting off the number of missiles he sees coming his way while literally everyone else in the background is just lazily milling about without a care in the world. It's rather peculiar. Almost unbelievably so.

I live in that city. To people who don't believe it. It's true. Our tank plant, fighter jet repair plant and oil terminal were attacked by these missiles. There is a video in the internet where you can see the actual hit.

the thing is Putin either needs to be paralysed in his tracks somehow or strategy must focus on deescalation. Putin keeps upping the ante for nuclear threats. You should be aware that he made it clear ages ago that if Ukraine were supplied with jets, he would strike with nukes. He made the same threat about NATO - not only Ukraine joining but also Finland and Sweden. Now he has upped the ante and yesterday issued a nebulous warning targeting any nation supplying Ukraine with weapons. Apparently this would be over some 20 countries.
What you need to basically accept is that if you advocate for these jets, it could mean the town you're in receiving missile strikes or nukes. China and Russia have long distance missiles. They have hypersonic missiles which no one else has and which we have no defence for.
At the end of the day, you need to consider, do you consider this fight a fight between two states or a fight between totalitarianism and democracy, and are you willing to make the same kind of sacrifices forced on those in Ukraine. It's not just about spirit; it means preparing to lose people, pets and things that you love. That's the reality.
The more Ukraine is successful in defending itself, the more Putin will up the ante.
i think that hostilities have been so marked that even if Ukraine simply surrendered, i cannot see Putin's war machine ending there. i hope I'm wrong. i just think in any case we have to do something kinda contradictory:
- take Putin's threats seriously and try to avoid nuclear war in particular
- realise that he lies through his teeth and constantly shifts the goalposts anyway
- so there's no real security and his propaganda mill will make up stuff out of thin air anyway BUT it would be profoundly myopic not to take him at his word
- honestly regardless of this i think that we are on the brink of war with Russia and China anyway (ie the US and its allies). Unfortunately in Australia there are like no bomb shelters and they're not building any.

You see a man talking crazy about a bomb but you don't understand this is no simple man, 20 years of service with even more knowledge in intelligence than you could imagine. I have no doubt this man could tell the type of explosion hitting near him because he's spent his life working through reports of all Russian active missile technology. The engine designe of a cruise missile is distinct enough from standard rocket that someone listening to it long enough could know. The amount he gets right is beyond the amount he may get wrong in the moment.
