Few artists fail because of their craft, most artists fail because of the business side of things. So important for creators to talk on this topic! Keep up the good work!

I was an artist first for a long time. Became completely broke and had to learn the business side. Now Im a double-edged powerhouse. I still feel down when I see artists who are incredibly talented, yet don't know how to sell their work. They believe the work will sell itself and that people will appreciate it but that simply isn't how the world works sadly.

The ones without a story. Without something that gets the telling foreward? Because than i am agreed with you. :)

Thank you for the advice. I have a question how do you market yourself as a videographer?

  • @VAZZU
    @VAZZU 5 років тому +4

These are my notes for the video.
    Traditional route :
    1. Go to film school
    2. Get into a production crew and work there.
If you’re a hard worker then you’re probably gonna get called for another project.
But you need to have a portfolio to get into one.
Try to approach as many agencies.
[You get paid by day rates usually]
    Unconventional routes :
    1. Wedding filmmaking
    2. Corporate films (they don’t need to be that flashy but they pay quite well)
    3. Passive Income - sell stock footage, UA-cam, affiliate marketing, etc.
    • never think a project is beneath you.
    • don’t under charge and finally
    • don’t work for free even if little start charging right away.

Yeah. I got a camera because I am an oil painter, and was investigating making prints, and for reference images. Inevitably, as things change, in order to keep up in the digital marketing world, I had to learn about video. But, I found a passion there too. A deep one. I'm just learning, too old for school or careers, but I'm having the most artistic fun of my life. I can't stop... Good luck!

I feel I like the music industry is the same way. I'm a working musician and I don't understand how people become starving artists. You don't have to be that person to do music full time. I started making money by busking in the street, then I got gigs in restaurants and hotels, now I play at weddings and corporate events. In my free time I write my own songs and pay a producer to record them. I know people who only do songwriting and write for TV and film and in their spare time they write their own music. I completely agree that passive income is another great way to make money as a freelancer. Write blogs about your field, books and tutorials! I think this is great advice for just about any creative field. You just have to get out of that mentality that you are going to be a star. It means you feel entitled.
I came across your video cause I'm actually getting into cinematography right now. I'm doing it just for fun but I thought if I get good at it, maybe I can also make some money :)

As a filmmaker who has spent the last 8-9 years only with music-related clients and no-budget indies, and only in the last 2 years started working with brands and agencies, I can attest that you are 100% correct. It is so much better to let the romantic notion of the "struggling artist" slip away, and embrace yourself as a business. My art has improved dramatically now that I am not constantly worried about making rent!

Nice video again! I really like being a videographer doing work for both small agencies and companies doing a little bit of everything. Used to think that I needed to evolve to a DP shooting high end commercials but actually pretty happy with small corp jobs, not that much pressure and you can develop through personal projects on the free time! And I agree with you, as long as you like the business side of filmmaking it's pretty simple to make a decent living! Would really like to hear more on your passive income sources, 40k a year is amazing! :)
