Hello from a Vancouver Island girl. I came upon your channel & am oh so very glad I did! I've had a gel plate for a couple of years & have used it now & then, but with the dollar store acrylic paints I find it hard to do much as they dry so fast. Maybe I need to apply more? I didn't want to purchase expensive paints when I was just starting out. I am so grateful for your video Karen! I like the length of it as you showed so many options & colour combos. I'm going to go break out my lonely 5 x 7 gel plate & watch again & play. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your talent & inspire me. I make cards & would love to use some of the types of backgrounds you made on the front of some of them. I'm also subscribing.
Hello fellow Vancouver Islandite? So glad you found me and that you like what you see and that it's given you some direction. I have used craft paints of varying price points on the gel print and they react differently. In fact each medium will be different. If I remember correctly I did end up using more paint when I used craft paint. Bear in mind each craft paint brand is different too. I like using Liquitex Basics when gel printing....although at first it was an adjustment. I also use the Michaels brand Artist Loft. If you want to try this...just pick a few colors ( your favorite color combo for instance) and try it with your plate to see if you like those results first before committing to buying lots of that kind of paint. Another thing...I have used the medium bodied acrylics with the craft paint...you can definitley mix and match.
The St. Paddy’s placemat is the gift that keeps on giving-I love the unpredictable layers of organic textures. I have some acrylic paint that I need to use; I appreciate your tips, especially for someone who gets impatient while waiting for the paint to set up. The second Gel plate of the same size is a great solution. Much gratitude!
Yes! Loved this video! I took my gelli plate to work with me yesterday and had some fun! Yes I have a little job that allows me to be creative! Not a fancy job. I'm a cashier in a small store and my boss doesn't care if I bring my stuff! LoL he works with leather so he understands the need to express yourself ❤️
I love the patterns and color combinations you created here. My go-to ‘abstract’ mark maker is a plastic grocery sack. This leaves a scattered linear texture in the paint. Usually good for 1st layer and then add more layers with stencils, stamps, etc. I borrowed this technique from Gerda Lipski, a German abstract artist whose youtube videos include many painting techniques that can be combined with gel printing. She also has gel printing videos!
This was great! Usually I like shorter videos but what I loved about this was the repetition so that we got a fuller scope of what can be done and it's going to stay in my head much better til I get a chance to try it. Loved all the variation also. It must take hours of work to put a video like this together. Thank you!
I find that if you leave the cleanup layer to dry more fully then it pulls all the layers better. I love your color combinations and the great texture tools you used.
I find the best paint for pulling off the grunge at the end of a session is Golden brand. These paints are expensive but they are very rich in pigment and you don't need much. Their fluid Quinacrodone Nickel Azo Gold is a fabulous translucent red-gold and pulls like magic. I like the colour because it goes perfectly with my favourite earth-tones/neutral colour palette. For a true metallic gold for gel printing, stencilling etc., their Iridescent Bronze Fine is the best I have ever used. I adore this paint! I also really like Arteza paints for the same reason - very pigment-rich, and also much cheaper than Golden. My favourite at the moment as a pale background is their Pearl Banana Yellow which looks absolutely fabulous when you are pulling up black grunge.
I loved how you not only showed mark making etc you mention the paint you use and how it goes together you were VERY informative more than any gel video I’ve seen thank you.just found your channel, glad I did
This was fun--love the DT mark makers--brilliant! I'm of the belief that ONE XL gel plate is far better than several smaller ones (unless you're using them as stamps, for that--small hand-held plates all the way) but having ONE XL plate has many benefits: only have to buy ONE only have to store ONE can do many sizes --I've a 12x12 so I can do (in one swoop, rather than several pulls) 12x12 and 8.5x11 and ANY SIZE smaller--right down to index cards and small tags--if you're working with 4x6 sheets--well then just ink/add paint to one corner of the XL plate my favorite: NO flippin' white borders to deal with (either reprint several times or cut them off --both HUGE waste of time and paper) This method too, could certainly be used on a single large plate--NO reason to buy/store/deal with 16 different sizes...
I bought an 11 X 14 plate....thinking as you do..but I have not found it to be as I thought...maybe I need to revisit it....although I did like not having the white borders....I guess the key is find out what works best for you and then do it...Happy gel printing. K
That's quite a thought. I've got the usual A4-ish sized one. I don't have a lot of room on my gel printing table. Do you have any videos/blog posts etc. where you show how you use your XL plate? This is most intriguing!
@@ShoshiPlatypus It's on the never-ending list of videos to be done. lol It's really no different than using the smaller ones for pulling prints (as I said, using it for stamping is just too much--not impossible but not convenient, lol) I do have a "my take on" on this topic-- ua-cam.com/video/ToxqAdituao/v-deo.html&feature=share&si=ELPmzJkDCLju2KnD5oyZMQ --but I will certainly do a video on using the big boy.
😲😲😲lol - wow Karen - this was the best gel plate tutorial that i have seen - it was wonderful to watch - very creative and very inspiring - thank you !! 🥰🤗
Karen this was a GREAT VIDEO. I got so many ideas for my next gelli printing session. From mark making ideas to colour combinations…I can’t wait to get going! TFS🥰
Super...I love gel printing....although I am typically exhausted afterwards. This time I have so many basecoated prints that need more layers so I guess that means another gel printing session ( and maybe video) coming soon. K
Luuurve his, Karen! Yummy and mouthwatering throughout! Since I started doing this kind of thing, I am seeing texture and pattern everywhere. My favourite mark maker is a cheap plastic bathmat. You can see it on my blog (link in my UA-cam channel header) - search for "bathmat" for posts where I've used it. The ghost print from it is absolutely gorgeous as the suction pads make a fabulous pattern.
One of the best gel printing videos I've seen!. I already have been playing with the PVC placemats, but after watching this video I realize there is a lot more I could be doing. Do any of your videos talk about how you organize all these wonderful papers for future projects? I'm kinda drowning!
Thank you so much. I do have a video showing my organization of papers . Here is one ua-cam.com/video/WrZ0i_rbDbM/v-deo.html and here is another ua-cam.com/video/1jA5QW9KbS0/v-deo.html. Check out the playlist "Art Studio Organization" for other organization videos . K
Wow...absolutely love your ideas on mark makers. I have never seen them at the store, so definitely gonna have to find them. Thanks so much for sharing, they are so great for my card making. 🌿💞🌿
I use regular copy paper...I think it's 24 lb I get it from Costco . It's a bit heavier than some copy papers. I do use the papers...but there is no one video to check on....or a way to connect to this video...I use papers when inspiration strikes. One suggestion is to do search inside my channel for collage papers/use those gel prints and start with those.
@@KarenBurchill can you use tissues or very transparent paper to Gelli plate with? It would be perfect if they would disappear (with gluing) into the background like the thin napkins do. I would like to incorporate that idea into my watercolor paintings!
I have a playlist on my channel...gel printings creating and using or something. Please check it out....but basically I use gel prints as instant backgrounds for art journal pages, cards etc, I use them a collage papers, I make focal images out of them. I even make art journals out of them. They are wonderful to have in your stash.
New subscriber, and I must say that I enjoy and learn from your straight-forward tutorial method. I love the "unexpected" mark-making materials, and have used several of them myself. I have some non-slip bath mats that have tiny protrusions, along with suction cups, and if the annoy me or take away from my desired result, I will snip them off with side cutters, jewelry making cutters, and the like. Even the back becomes an interesting grungy cut-up result. So much fun! TFS
I agree, Naples yellow is a great and versatile color. It's my go to a lot for printing, along with unbleached titanium white. Inspired me to go to the dollar store and hunt... except we're are getting half a foot of snow today... booo, I want flowers... I love snow but I'm done with it now lol
@@KarenBurchill soon, winter in New England doesn't like to let go. We already had a thaw once, so I know old man winter is just being stubborn at this point 🤣🙄
Karen, always love your Gel printing adventures!! It's inspiring to be reminded of other options than purchased stencils. Hope that BC is heading into spring, here in Ontario still having snow but starting to feel the change in the season. Take care! xx
Hi Karen. I haven't opened my new gel plate yet so I have no experience whatsoever in geli-printing. That's why I'm watching your video! I have to ask: The very first stage (0:55) coating the paper. Why do you use the gel plate for this instead of applying paint straight to the paper? Just curious and trying to learn! 🙂
Honestly you could do it with a brush but doing it on the gel plate gets you using your gel plate and getting the feel of brayering on the paint. It also leaves some residue on the plate which gets picked up on the following pulls. It is also way faster to cover the pages using the gel plate and you get a different look...more imperfect or organic ...and loads more texture. Hope that helps...now open your gel plate and get rolling...don't overthink it....just play with colors .
If you are struggling to pull up dried paint, put a thinner layer of paint on then leave the paper on until it doesn’t feel as cool to the touch. The time allows the top layer of paint to bond to the lower layers and your paper 😊
I think this is really cool! I don’t journal so I’m trying to think of a way to use these cool papers! I’ll subscribe and hope I think of something!😂 Thanks for teaching all of us!
I have used some of my favorite color combos to cover the boxes that I store my paints in and I'm working on a big box to keep collage papers that I made using my gel plate as well as other techniques in. I'm also going to do a mixed media work on a board of flowers tearing pieces of gel plate made papers for the flower petals, leaves, vase etc. I have the basic sketch done and now the fun part!!! I covered 2 inch wide stripes of a pasta box with some of my own paper and made myself a few book marks instead of the usual odd stuff I have used in the past. There are tons of things to do with your papers!!
Beautiful. Would make great backgrounds. Can you paint into them over them? If so, with what medium? I imagine acrylic or guache, but not watercolor...?
Yes they will make great backgrounds and collage items...yes you can totally paint over them...yes acrylic . I would imagine guache , but I have never worked with it...even watercolor would go over....and if too dark...a bit of gesso then watercolor. I wouldnt limit yourself to it. K
Thanks for sharing your creativity and information about paint and mark making. Do you make double-sided prints or will you print on the second side at a l ater date?
Typically I don't do double sided prints....as I don't put them into a journal but rather glue them down or use as collage. If I was to do double sided I would wait till print was totally dry and then do back side. K
Great video with lots of new ideas, I really like the result of pressing the paper onto the mark maker, I haven't tried that yet so I will be doing something like that soon. Not all dollar stores are the same, much of what you show through out your videos, I can't get here in MB. I agree with your choice of favorite print, it's just so yummily grungy... When you say, instant background, will you use it as the backdrop for a mixed media piece?
Thanks. True that all dollar stores are not the same...but go for a walk through yours and see what "treasures" you can find. I will use some of the gel prints as the background to start an art journal or mixed media piece ....just cut it to size, glue down and maybe add some things. I also use rip a strip where I rip prints and combine a couple colors to break a page. You'll see me doing this in many of my video tutorials. K
Hello, I'm a new sub. I haven't made the trip to the Dollar Store yet but have been intending to for awhile now. This video gives me the inspiration to go do it and load up on much more practically priced mark making tools for my projects! Thanks!
Most of the time I do use regular copy paper. I get 24 lb copy paper from Costco...it's a bit heavier than some copy papers. I do not like gel printing on heavier paper ...but do occasionally gel print on tissue paper or deli paper.
What paper(s) do you use for these base layer things?? I like how you make me want to try colours that I wouldn't normally try :) I like the way this video is.. so many possibilities and adventures to be had :)
Hi Pepper, I use Rice paper that I get from Amazon. It works well, is very strong and tears easily for collage. It's not expensive... I think 50 9x12 sheets are under $10 and free shipping too.
@@KarenBurchill Oooh - phone book paper! Never thought of that one. That could produce some interesting results, with the existing text providing the first layer of texture. Yellow pages would be fun, too.
Great video! I am really curious about your approach to cleaning the mark-making placemats after a gel print session. It looks like a lot of paint was layered on over time. Did you soak them later or just leave the paint on to dry?
Great question. On the shelf liners I have an entire roll so if it gets too painty I toss and get a new piece. The sink liners ( not as available) I havent washed to this point...but I was thinking I would give it a go to clean using the same technique I use to clean my painty stencils....dishwasher tablet in hot water. I will let you know how it works . K
@@KarenBurchill thanks so much. It is helpful to hear that you are not magically cleaning everything off camera 😊 It seems so much easier to keep the flow going when gel printing to not have to stop and clean the placemats etc after each use. Probably a different story for fancy stencils? I am still a newbie at this and trying to figure out a rhythm around drying times and cleaning. Really appreciate how you share your knowledge 🌞
Ok so I gave it a try and it totally works....if clean mark makers are important to you...do it right after gel printing session so it comes off super easy. Dont wait for it to build up. If they have build up over time they take longer and some muscle and time. I'd rather be creating so will probably use it till it is unusable ( if that happens) and buy another one, especially if they are cheap and readily sourced.
I found that Murphy’s Oil Soap is also a great cleaner for stencils and other art tools! Just soak with the MOS and hot water, give a swish and most of the paint actually flacks off. A little scrub with a soft brush gets the rest.
You can make a mark maker/ stencil from hot glue but the actual gel plate needs to be squishy. There are lots of recipes on line for diy gel plates. I tried once but didn’t like it.
Yes you can...both work as an adhesive....and will make the surface non=porous....Some clear gessos are gritty....and may allow you to do some techniques but for what I typically do are interchangeable. K
I use them as instant backgrounds. as collage materials, in paper painting, to make art journals, to cover composition books....watch pretty much any of my videos and you will see me using them in some way. K
I have made up a collection of gel prints which I sell through Ninnysnapkins.com I combined them with an assortment of sentiments and decorated coffee filters ( more collage papers) ...I call them Possibility Packs. Here is the link if you wish to go check them out . bit.ly/mmcpossibilitypack
Thank you so much Karen, I really really enjoyed watching you create all those amazing and stunning gelli plate prints. I’m definitely going to try to create some of my own.
Great ideas.
Thank you! 😊
These are amazing and so much fun! Thank you 😊
Glad you like them! hope you give it a try. K
Nice! Great video. I haven't tried Naples yellow yet but it will be in my near future!
Naples Yellow, Prussian Blue....absolutely necessary basics LOL
So enjoyable ... thanks. What type of paper did you use?
Mostly I use regular copy paper.....sometimes deli paper....sometimes tissue paper. K
What paper is this you are using? Sorry if I missed it! Thank you for doing this. I am just moving into MM and need lots of info!
I primarily use just regular copy paper. Occassionally I use tissue paper or deli paper.
Try clear gesso or gel medium for lifting ghost prints
Excellent suggestion
Hello, I'm a new sub. I haven't made the trip to the Dollar Store yet but have been intending to for awhile now. This video gives me the inspiration to go do it and load up on much more practically priced mark making tools for my projects! Thanks!
Yes...take some time and go up and down the aisles of dollar stores and see what patterns and textures you can find....you'd be surprised
Loved this video!! What kind of paper are you printing on?
Thank you . Just regular copy paper mostly. K
Hey Karen, great video full of great tips and info. What kind of paper are you using in this video?
Thank you...I use primarily regular copy paper..Mine comes from Costco...and is 24 lb
Are you using regular printer paper?? I’m just starting to acquire the proper tools so I want to make sure I have the proper paper. Thanks😻.
Most of the time I do use regular copy paper. I get 24 lb copy paper from Costco...it's a bit heavier than some copy papers. I do not like gel printing on heavier paper ...but do occasionally gel print on tissue paper or deli paper.
I mean, I can use paint or colored pencils, or felt pen over it after it dries
I've not had any trouble putting anything I want over the matte medium.
Have you ever run a print thru an embossing plate?
Yes works well but not something I think to do often. Embossing machine is not easily accessed
Fantastic! What paper are you using?
I use plain old copy paper for the most part...nothing extravagent. K
@KarenBurchill thank you Karen 😊
What paper(s) do you use for these base layer things?? I like how you make me want to try colours that I wouldn't normally try :) I like the way this video is.. so many possibilities and adventures to be had :)
I basically use just regular copy paper when I gel print. I have also used old phone book paper ( collages nicely) as well as tissue paper....
What's the best paper to use for gel printing for use in cardmaking.
I am not a real card maker as I don’t necessarily do what’s common. I gel print in regular copy paper and use that.
Dollar store - Ming blown! 👍🏻
Gotta love dollar store stuff. K
What do you do with the paper when you are done printing on them?
I use them as collage papers, or instant backgrounds for art journal pages.Or backgrounds for cards.....use as you would any scrapbook pages.
❤TFS!
Hope there's a gel printing session in your future. K
Can you make a gel pad from hot glue, or does it need to be more pliable?
You can make a mark maker/ stencil from hot glue but the actual gel plate needs to be squishy. There are lots of recipes on line for diy gel plates. I tried once but didn’t like it.
@@KarenBurchill thank you 😊
What are the prizes from a gelli pad in Amerika A4 model
Check the Amazon links to find out the prices for the various sized. K
Does it work the same for the most part?
Yes
Question I got this Liquitex matte medium can I use this instead of the gesso clear
Yes you can...both work as an adhesive....and will make the surface non=porous....Some clear gessos are gritty....and may allow you to do some techniques but for what I typically do are interchangeable. K
I lo that foam but you did say what size it is and hoy it.
I'm not sure I know what you are talking about " foam" If you give me the time in video it is being used I can answer your question. K
Can you do this on fabrics?
I've seen videos where they do put it on fabric but I haven't tried it at all so not sure how it works. K
Please show some collages! I want to sell my work!
Lots of collages done in various videos. Enjoy K
What do you use all the prints for?
I use them as instant backgrounds. as collage materials, in paper painting, to make art journals, to cover composition books....watch pretty much any of my videos and you will see me using them in some way. K
@@KarenBurchill THANK YOU
Do you sell those prints 10:22
I have made up a collection of gel prints which I sell through Ninnysnapkins.com I combined them with an assortment of sentiments and decorated coffee filters ( more collage papers) ...I call them Possibility Packs. Here is the link if you wish to go check them out . bit.ly/mmcpossibilitypack
Thank you so much Karen, I really really enjoyed watching you create all those amazing and stunning gelli plate prints. I’m definitely going to try to create some of my own. And you certainly have inspired me. I really really love ❤️ all of them, but, the grungy one are the best. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Thank you. I love doing a gel plate session..always gets my creative juices flowing. K
