Busks often had carved messages on them, particularly if they were carved by someone close to the person they were intended for. One example of such a message: “To my beloved sister, and don’t you dare break this one.”

As a beginner (have literally only made one piece of clothing so far) you have no idea how happy this phrase makes me. Sometimes I stress about whether or not I'm doing something "right," but in some ways, as long as it gets the job done, and looks alright, it doesn't much matter.
My favorite phrase when learning anything: “if the solution works, it’s not a stupid solution”
Better to try, fail and learn than never try!
I couldnt gather fabric for the life of me in school, as soon as I stopped caring about how pretty the stitching looked the technique got so much easier
I'm making my first ever garment (an 18th century shirt). My stitching sucks - but all I want is for it to stay together...
That what I was taught: as long as it gets done and looks right. Think that was to encourage me to sew as I find I am now finding better tips and tricks to do the same thing. "live and learn."

Sayyadeea when your dog is mat trained this is especially difficult, I have a service dog and my first sewing project was done with her continuously thinking that she was being prompted to “stay here” 😜

Wow, the amount of stitching needed to make all those small channels, remembering that the original would have all been sewn by hand. Makes you appreciate why clothes were made to last as they would have been so expensive to make at the time. A fantastic looking corset.
A little fact that I always remember in The Tudor Tailor said that a full suit of clothes was the equivalent investment of a car today (compared to average income), hence why they weren't popping out to buy a new shirt every other weekend.
I kinda really want to hand-sew my own corsets.
Nothing as gorgeously fancy as this, but some nice, practical custom pieces for modern daily wear.

I'll get some similarly weighted fabric for a mock-up first, though, of course.

I don't know how anyone gets anything done without a nudge from a needy pup from time to time. The corset is gorgeous.

My sewing clips are off brand.... they shall now be called pinchy crabs :)
I use Binder clips You can buy them much cheaper and you always have a chip clip that way.
Sewing clips are far better, but I still end up with 3/4 binder clips in my stash..
I use small tiny binder clips, especially when I don't want pin holes or snags.
That is RIDICULOUSLY gorgeous, oh my god!! I haven't even attempted to sew anything since I was, like, 14? 15? But between Bernadette Banner's channel and this one I'm feeling the W A N T 😍

Beautiful work! Since you aren’t backstitching/knotting the ends of those channels, you don’t need to bring the top thread to the back with a needle - you can just pull the bobbin thread from the back and it’ll pop the top thread through enough that you can grab it. I’m only mentioning it because all that needle threading! XD Also, I use my wonder clips a ton. They’re especially fun if you don’t grab one quite right and it goes *FWING!* across the room.
You are a genius! This is what I'm doing to my stays currently I'm tighing the ends off and clipping them it looks very neat thank you!
Not backstitching makes it neater and not as obvious that it's machine sewn? Sorry, I missed the part where she talked about it. That is a great tip.

@@MorganDonner Funny thing is, I came up with something similar because I hate doing knots. So all my Garments are generally done without a single knot. I just do two loops and then stitch through following by burying the tread. It holds just as well as a knot. Well it technically is, but its not fiddling with threads trying to tie them of. But then again, I am also one of these masochists who sew EVERYTHING by hand. I do not even own a sewing machine. :D
Love how it turned out! I've been watching a ton of your videos recently (but hadn't commented before). Your projects are all so awesome and inspiring. Btw the little clips are genetically craft clips and I use them from just about everything I sew.
They are indispensable in millinery work too. They are my favorite tool.

Gorgeous work! You make me want to pick up sewing immediately. I want nothing more than a tailored corset and a good period appropriate gown so I can flounce around in it when the mood takes me.
I'm in love with the stays. I absolutely love mid 17th century fashion. If you were to make a gown to go with, would it be the simplistic middle class and first class, or the over-the-top court fashion. I would love to show you a drawing I made of the court fashion. The pose doesn't make sense for the dress but the dress itself (I think) turned out wonderfully

This is beautiful! And the tips about ironing the trim to get it to curve and ironing the gores around a paper pattern as a guide? So useful!
This is my favorite era of historical costuming at the moment - I have a dream of making a blue/silver dress like was so popular in portraits from that time. It would be AMAZING if you could go over dress construction from this era as well!
@ Christina, I suggest you have your library inter library loan you a copy of Jean Hunnisett’s book, period costume for stage and screen, the volume you want is for costumes from 1500 to 1800. They are out of print. She was a contemporary of Janet Arnold and she designed and constructed costumes for the opera, Movies and BBC historical dramas. She has patterns for several different time periods within the the 17th century as the styles changed. She based her patterns on Arnold’s work and other extant costumes. The difference is that Arnold’s are an exact copy - so if it’s a piece that was worn by a 4’ 8”, 250 pound woman, that’s what the pattern will replicate and you have to alter a lot many times. Hunnisett’s patterns have already been altered to fit a modern female figure (or make figure for her men’s volumes). You are still getting pages of patterns that are based on a one inch grid ratio. You’ll get a pattern for say a modern 12 and you’ll have to adjust from there. There are ways to do this which I covered on a reply to an earlier comment. I do a lot of costumes in the 17th century for reenactors at a National Historic landmark house museum. Hunnisett is the most useful book for this. Once you have the pattern you want, you could always look to Arnold to add some period details or hand sewing technique but this is the best way to go for the pattern. If you are interested, reply to me and I can explain the best way to enlarge an Arnold pattern. Do not use the computer method described here. You will get inaccuracies. Notice one comment said her pattern piece printed out at nine inches when the squares should have equaled ten inches. Hope this helps.
The finished corset is absolutely gorgeous, your skills are really impressive! You made that tabs binding so easy even if I bet it was not. Amazing job!

Morgan these are simply stunning! How fun the original has elements like markings, strain wrinkles, etc it helps remind us that history wasn't perfect and we don't have to be either (although yours are a darn close to perfect recreation!) Also yay for the greyhound breaks of course, I'm glad we got to see both Kathryn and Jean Luc!

Morgan mentioned her fabric warping a little and suddenly I don't feel as bad about a dress that I had made warping around the eyelets. It makes a lot more sense. I love this channel so much and appreciate how easy you make it to learn and identify areas of improvement in our own work. Keep up the great work (at your pleasure, of course)!!

My however many times great grandfather was a stays maker in the early/mid 17th century. Maybe that's why I like sewing, embroidery and braiding etc so much!

I was literally looking at these stays an hour ago while trying to find patterns for a 17thc working womans stays with front closure because I have disabilities but want to be bomb as fuck. So, I click to your next video on a break on the research traul and HERE YOU ARE with the exact one I was looking at and patterns that I may be able to adapt! Are you my historic guardian angel?! THANK YOU, how did you know?! I am losing my mind over here yelling in my flat. I don't think I've been this pumped since I got corsets and a terrible crinoline for birthday/christmas when I was 14. the pinchy crabs and your dog made my heart warm. First off cool video I wish I could make clothes this well. On your project the boning channels are so close the presser foot works. But at 4:30 when I machine quilt I use painter's tape as a guide and sew in-between the two pieces of tape. It ensures I get a nice straight line of sewing right where I want it. The painter's tape doesn't leave a sticky film. I thought it might be helpful for you or your viewers in future projects. I love to sew diagonal lines on my quilts. My painter tape guides keep each row nicely spaced and straight. I love your final project. I'm working to improve my clothing sewing skills. 12:50 I can confirm we quilters use the "wonder clips" this way. I love those clips. :)

I learned so much watching this and they turned out BEAUTIFUL. Absolutely gorgeous... I now need to run to the store and make a new pair of stays using these techniques... no really.. A mazing! New sub from me. You tube has been trying to get me to watch this for about a week now. But I knew this was a 3 part series and I didn't have the time till today to watch all three. Love love love your video style. You do really make it look so easy but at the same time still just as daunting as I'm sure it actually is. It's like an effortless struggle... If that makes sense. And I enjoyed it. I habe extra time so I'm going to look through the rest of your video collection and see what other wonderful things you make that I will want to do but probably never get to.

Thoroughly helpful -- and fun -- series to watch. The stays are dreamy and flattering. The way you handled the threads at the end of channels: had a big ahhhh moment. Plus, waiting to cut the tabs until after they are boned: another ahhh. Sure enough, I started a pair of 1740s stays after your first video, and between your helps, those of POF5, Catherine Caron-Grieg's several tutorials, and Sign of the Golden Scissors' booklet, feel in good hands. Are there 1740s stays in POF5 ? I'm just starting to sew, and since I'll have lots of time on my hands this summer I really want to attempt stays, as you can't really do much else than shifts and petticoats without them. My target is to get a 1740s middle class outfit, and I'd been eyeing POF5. If there are any in POF5, how did you find the pattern ? I'd love to hear about your stays ! After rewatching this video, I feel confident I have all the techniques needed, and it's such a morale boost ! I'll definitely check out the other resources you mentioned.
@@Loweene_Ancalimon I have POF5 as well, and there is a circa 1740's stays in it that does not look as fancy/impractical as most of the court stays also mentioned in them, as well as a circa 1760's stays that does not look fancy at all and is comparable to stays worn by maids. Both have high, square backs for support, and the 1760's one is strapless, so not hindering arm movement at all. Even if you're not making any of the corsets in the book, it still has a lot of information on how they were constructed, the cut of the fabric, and the materials used for boning and lining etc :) so totally worth the money!

I ordered fabric two days ago, part of it is for stays :) I've already made a cardboard mockup from the 1730s-1740s stays in Corsets and Crinolines, but I've been struggling with it, and I'm not too sure how to adjust them for me (make them a good 5cm shorter, and bigger). I was drawn to them because they lace over a stomacher, which means ease of dressing. How are the POF5 ones ? Front or back lacing ? I will get it in a couple weeks, as a treat for having finished my degree !

Both the stays have no stomacher and are spiral laced, and the 1740's one has lace both in the front and back, and the straps are adjustable, so you can also just get rid of them. The 1760's one is backlaced. I myself am drawn to make the 1760's one, or buy a pattern to make an 1890's one, even though that one looks just so much more difficult but oh my it's pretty.
You and the lovely Bernadette Banner have inspired me to make a project I've been terrified to make- I was also inspired by the 2015 move The Witch, and want to make a period-accurate stay. I love this stay so, so much, but I wonder if it'd be appropriate for a 1630 Puritan. My thoughts for this character (that I would wear to festivals and such) is that she is a Scottish who travels with the Puritans, only to distance herself from them as soon as possible to practice her craft in solitude of the undiscovered (by white people, anyway) woods. Anyway, story aside - for this costume, the stay would be exposed with no kind of cover, and be made with a solid reddish-brown color, with gold stitching on the holes and border, which would be an obvious rebellion against the strict fashion rules of the Puritans. But I wonder- is this stay one that might have been worn in 1630?
That's so exciting! I hope you have a lot of fun making your character's outfit! 1630 is slightly on the early side for these stays, but not by much! Earlier analysis of the extant garment thought that it may have been from as early as 1620, so if this is what you want to make, go for it! If you haven't picked up Patterns of Fashion 5 yet, definitely do so, its such a good resource.

Mad props on that hand stitching. The way you put the trim on is amazing, I would be sitting there totally stumped. The turns at the tops of the tabs are beautiful.
