Actually this painting is part of a collection of the paintings of 38 beauties of king Ludwig I. of Bavaria. Some of the other paintings are also in a rennaisance or even greek style, some are more time appropiate. The king was quite the fan of old stuff and even built a greek temple like the Akropolis close to where I live. If you ever visit Munich you can go and see all the original paintings of the beauties at the castle Nymphenburg. I really recommend the visit. The "Akropolis" is called "Walhalla" (it seems he also was a fan of Nordic Mythology) and contains a collection of statues of the heads of famous German people. It is located near Regensburg, Bavaria.

Yes, she did a great job and I love how she used the Rope to show more clearly what she was doing. It made it so much easier for me as I am more of a visual learner. Maybe a bit late but fun fact from a goldsmith: She is actaully wearing pearls. Back in the day they usually weren´t round or pear shaped but much more uneven an "splatter like". This had to do with the type of pearl mussels available (mostly from rivers and the mediterrean sea, both of wich aren´t known as origins of high quality, evenly shaped pearls) Most natural round shaped pearls today come from the Caribbean and Haiti and are quite expensive, the cheaper ones are cultivated mostly in China or Japan and have a fake/hand applied core and only a few layers of mother of pearl. That´s also a reason why older necklaces with pearls still look good today (with proper handling and care) while the cheaper ones loose their mother of peal exterior pretty fast :)
That 4 strand plait is the basic stitch of bobbin lace. "Twist, cross, twist." I wonder if that made 4 strand braids more popular as a hair style when bobbin lace was at it's peak.

Being german, I only know its not German and also not a dialect of German. It's not Luxemburgian , maybe it's Breton? Either way, here is some more unasked information on Carolina Vetterlein, taken from a book* I own by chance, roughly translated by me to English: born on 25. December 1812 in Münchberg as a daughter of the state council (Staatsrat) Karl Vetterlein. Married 10. October 1843 Reichsfreiherr (there is no translation for that word, imagine a nobleman with a smaller castle and some farms) Franz Ludwig von Künsberg, had a daughter with him. Died 5. March 1862. Her Portrait was painted by Stieler for King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Ludwig did comission a gallery of belles for himself from Stieler, which depicted the most beautiful women of their time. The Gallery is still located in castle Nymphenburg in Munich. *Gerhard Hojer: Die Schönheitengalerie König Ludwigs I., Regensburg 2011. Thank you for your great video! Wonderful! Little tip on adding hair. Do it gradually. It gives you more control because your added sections are less of the hair that you are holding at one time and you can get as much length as you want out of it.

Historical portraits are often hilariously inaccurate when comparing them to others of the same subject. Or you often find that one artist paints every single person remarkably similarly... Who knows what this girl actually looked like; she may have looked completely different in real life.
socrlax some portraits look nothing like the person being painted. Its kind of funny. Imagine if you’re being painted nothing like yourself and you’re just like lol that looks nice and then a few hundred years in the future someone’s like oh wow that person looks exactly(or pretty close) like me.
That was very dependant on what the portrait was for, which artist drew it, whether a person was in mourning, the social status of the person depicted and the time when it was painted (even between decades there were differences). You could have a very accurate portrait for the family, then a (possibly) wildly inaccurate one meant for potential marriage partners and one for a potential future superior where the look would be suitable for the desired function. If you want to be a court lady and someone showed the queen a picture that you'd show to a potential marriage partner there might be...questions. Also, no matter whether someone was particularly pale or not, a higher ranking woman should have lighter skin than a lower ranking one in a group painting, unless everyone gets the same skin colour.
Not only was the recreation just perfect, but you also taught me how to do this braid! Thank you sooo much! I tried so many times to braid anything other than the regular braid, and I never succeeded, no matter how many tutorials I read and watched. But with the way you explained it, I understood it! I tried it out on someone else first, and it looked amazing. Then I braided my own hair. Thank you!
Might I suggest a couple possible explanations for the braids? 1: most obvious, she has really thin hair 2: it’s possible she separated her hair and did the two braids and pinned up the rest in the back
There were four braids. Smaller in front and two on the back. And indeed false horse tail hair was used to make the braids longer. So at the back the braids were woven on the back of the head and the front were roled over the ears. The necklace on the head hold the hair too. Loved your tutorial.

This is the actual best 4 strand braid tutorial I have EVER seen. I’ve never been able to do it before! Do you have any tips for hair growth? (Besides just waiting of course lol) Like type of brush you use, how often you brush, products etc.?
Thank you! I am glad you liked it! I am fairly lucky in the hair department, it just grows, and I oblige it by not cutting it :p I just use a normal wooden/bamboo brush, I usually just brush once in the morning before braiding my hair for the day.
I take biotin, 3 a day, I know it works because when I'm faithful I have to color alot more often. And keep it up more often than not. Rubbing your back or shoulders causes breakage.
When you get down to the end of the braids I find that it is easy to take either black or dark brown thread and just sew the end to secure them versus having to use a hair tire or a little rubber band.
I've extended 4 strand braids before and it actually works a little better if you stagger it by adding half to one central exchange, twist, then add the second to the next central exchange. It avoids the 'hips' look in the middle of your braid by splitting the additions.
Hm, I wonder if, in fact, the 4 strands braid doesn't actually turn into a regular 3 strands one somewhere above the ear... you can't see the 4th strand in the middle anymore beyond that point, and it would make sense to redistribute the hair from 4 to 3 strands when thickness start tapering, this way each individual strand remains the same thickness for a bit longer... I'm not sure, it could just be that the 4th strand is less visible but still there... I guess I'll have to try this theory for myself. :-p
This was so fun. You did a great job matching the hairstyle and jewelry. The side by side comparison at the end was remarkable, as if the young lady in the portrait was painted again a few years later, in her twenties. I am inspired to learn the four section braid, it is so pretty!

Resemblance to ancestors seems to skip a couple of generations at a time. My dad could wear his great-granddad's military dress uniform, and pass for him. My toddler son looks like a blonde version of my dad at the same age, so I know he'll attain "hunk factor 11" and I need to shake girls (or boys) off of him with a stick in a few years! My doppelgänger is less ancient. I've been told on several occasions that I look like Milla Jovovich. At the time, we both had the same hair cut and color, but I was a lot less proficient in the zombie butt-kicking department. :P

It's funny, as a kid, I never understood why certain fashions were considered beautiful - they just looked weird to me - but then Morgan does one and she looks beautiful. I think seeing it on a living person creates a whole different feeling, rather than just seeing it in paintings. It really comes alive, no pun intended.

I do four-strand braids just like a plain weave (left hand section goes over, under, over, and ends up on the right, repeat to end). You’d think it wouldn’t work, but it does. The advantage of this method is that you can extend it to five-strand, six-strand or even seven-strand braids before it begins to get slightly lopsided.

There were four braids. Smaller in front and two on the back. And indeed false horse tail hair was used to make the braids longer. So at the back the braids were woven on the back of the head and the front were roled over the ears. The necklace on the head hold the hair too. Loved your tutorial.

This is the actual best 4 strand braid tutorial I have EVER seen. I’ve never been able to do it before! Do you have any tips for hair growth? (Besides just waiting of course lol) Like type of brush you use, how often you brush, products etc.?
Thank you! I am glad you liked it! I am fairly lucky in the hair department, it just grows, and I oblige it by not cutting it :p I just use a normal wooden/bamboo brush, I usually just brush once in the morning before braiding my hair for the day.
I take biotin, 3 a day, I know it works because when I'm faithful I have to color alot more often. And keep it up more often than not. Rubbing your back or shoulders causes breakage.
I love this hairstyle! Going on two years remission and so excited for my hair to get longer so I can go back to my daily braided hairstyles.
When you get down to the end of the braids I find that it is easy to take either black or dark brown thread and just sew the end to secure them versus having to use a hair tire or a little rubber band.
I do love these historical recreation videos, and this one was fantastic! It always makes me think what the original person would have thought.
I've extended 4 strand braids before and it actually works a little better if you stagger it by adding half to one central exchange, twist, then add the second to the next central exchange. It avoids the 'hips' look in the middle of your braid by splitting the additions.
Hm, I wonder if, in fact, the 4 strands braid doesn't actually turn into a regular 3 strands one somewhere above the ear... you can't see the 4th strand in the middle anymore beyond that point, and it would make sense to redistribute the hair from 4 to 3 strands when thickness start tapering, this way each individual strand remains the same thickness for a bit longer... I'm not sure, it could just be that the 4th strand is less visible but still there... I guess I'll have to try this theory for myself. :-p

Resemblance to ancestors seems to skip a couple of generations at a time. My dad could wear his great-granddad's military dress uniform, and pass for him. My toddler son looks like a blonde version of my dad at the same age, so I know he'll attain "hunk factor 11" and I need to shake girls (or boys) off of him with a stick in a few years!
My doppelgänger is less ancient. I've been told on several occasions that I look like Milla Jovovich. At the time, we both had the same hair cut and color, but I was a lot less proficient in the zombie butt-kicking department. :P
I did live the look you created. I do think the square neckline of those early Renaissance dresses are somewhat signature though.

It's funny, as a kid, I never understood why certain fashions were considered beautiful - they just looked weird to me - but then Morgan does one and she looks beautiful. I think seeing it on a living person creates a whole different feeling, rather than just seeing it in paintings. It really comes alive, no pun intended.

I do four-strand braids just like a plain weave (left hand section goes over, under, over, and ends up on the right, repeat to end). You’d think it wouldn’t work, but it does. The advantage of this method is that you can extend it to five-strand, six-strand or even seven-strand braids before it begins to get slightly lopsided.
