Nice explanation im sold. I looked on the official Catan website there are rules there which explain how to combine this expansion with other ones such as seafarers , cities and knights as well as traders and barbarians.
Wool to make cloth for sails makes perfect sense but how does using a sheep boost movement? Probably 1) The sailors love lamb and would overtime 2) They sacrifice sheep to appease the Catan wind gods for divine help
Thanks for your thorough reviews Tom. It is very helpful to be able to observe the game mechanics and design of so many games I would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.
Which is the best to buy first? Cities and Knights is too complicated for the people I play with right now. This one looks similar to Seafarers, but adds more. Thoughts?
4:50 You have to put back your settlers and your ship Not only One. The reason for this ist you normally need 2 roads plus settlement which Cost you 8 ressources but ship plus settlers cost only 6 ressources Also If the Number for the Piraten laser ist Roller you geht 2 Gold but since it is Not ressource Like Wood.., you will get 1 extra Gold If you geht nothing else. No you cant pay 1 Gold for ressorces, it says: Trade 1 ressorces for 1 gold. So you can trade 2 ressources for 2 Gold which is exactly 1 ressorces. So its essentially 2:1 trading for ressources or you Psy the 1 Gold for the Piraten to move
I have a couple questions that weren't mentioned in the video: 1) is there a 5-6 player expansion. 2) can you have Multiple boats. 3) finally do I need seafarer expansion.
I've found that this expansion removes a lot of the chance from the game; one player isn't going to be getting 8 cards from one lucky roll. Gold also really helps to even out the chance aspect.
My questions would be if you can build a settlement with your colonist in the movement phase. Then, if you throw a separate dice for fish or it's the dice from the prod phase with which you get resourses.
Thanks for the explanation! helps out to show this video to my friends to help them understand how to play E&P. We are all so use to playing seafarers its good to start something new! thanks again!
Hi there, Recently bought this game and I found a few leaks in the rules. Firstly what happens when 2 boats are at one fish plate? do both boats get the fish or do you need to gamble for them? or is the first person in the row to be the owner of the fish, can't find it in the rule manual. Second, do you receive gold when you bring the fish to the Council of Catan ?
I have vandalized the hexes of my CATAN game recently. Maybe it is time to pull them out again and actually play the game with them. I am a bit of CATAN purist... I am not a fan of any of the other expansions but maybe this one will be the one that makes it all fit together.
So if I can choose between a Explorers and Pirates and a Seafarers. the EaP are better? and It is possible to mix a Explorers and Pirates with a Cities and Knights??
***** we have a great time combining SF, CK & EP, see here for some pics and rules, www.reddit.com/r/Catan/comments/2xqlat/catan_citiesknights_explorerpirates/
Some thoughts right of the bat: 1) The pieces are kindof clumsy/ugly 2) I still have a lot of questions as to what happens with the setlers that you have to drop off everywhere (after the mini-issue there is resolved they just go off the board again?) Also with having different stuff on your boat... Can you drop off whatever you have and pick up something else at any given moment? 3) I like to judge a game on whether I can play it with friends that are not that into boardgames but just play them for the sake of fun maybe 1,2,3 times a year and for those kinds of players simplicity is very, very, very important. Everyone who has played cities and knights knows this can be a problem (it can even be a problem in-game where it is hard to keep track of all the perks you have earned along the way which is a whole other problem on its own) but I have to say at first glance this expansion/other way to play catan scores really bad. There are so many pieces and little quirks here that will scare away a lot of people I think. Again I know this doesn't apply to experienced board gamers but I want my 9 year old nephew for example to be able to play along and all these extra ways to win the game instead of really adding to the core of it will make it harder to grasp the whole concept I believe. 4) It seems kindof sad that this 'expansion' isn't really compatible with the other ones. When you read the name you immediately think this will go well with seafarers which obviously isn't a coincidence but after seeing your review I have learned this is not all the case :( 5) Thanks for the review! I've read in the comments sometimes that you need to be more objective. I don't agree, it is very obvious that you have a lot of experience with board games in general which makes your opinion a usefull tool to decide on buying a game or not. The pouring the pieces out of box montage was weird though xD
>You will find that there is very little trading in this game. Trading is probably the only mechanic that catan still does better than any other board game... This game seems like it removed everything that made catan unique, including good and bad aspects.
It's a shame this wasn't released as a stand alone expansion since it seems to need not a whole lot from the original game. I have the original Mayfair release of the game which is incompatible with the expansions. I've never cared however, because the expansion IMO diminish the Catan experience. The original core game with 3-4 players remains the best game. This game looks like it could be a fun experience on it's own, but no way I'm buying another Settlers just try it. Ah well.

This was the first Dice Tower video I ever watched!
Wool to make cloth for sails makes perfect sense but how does using a sheep boost movement?
Probably
1) The sailors love lamb and would overtime
2) They sacrifice sheep to appease the Catan wind gods for divine help
Increase the area of sails to catch more wind?
add MORE sail :) [or feed the sailors so they have more strength? lol]
Sheep move ships, don't you know? Half the containers on commercial ships have sheep in there, it's how they move.
I always thought it was the sheep who piloted the boat.
They throw the sheep overboard to make the ship lighter and faster.
Cleaning that up must've been a nightmare 1:20
I love Catan but i hate how the tiles move all over the place. It drives me crazy.
Isn't there a traveller's version where they click in place?

oh my GOD HEAVEN!!!!!!
Do you have a video ranking all of the Catan games and expansions like you did with Ticket to Ride? That was so helpful!
Thanks for your thorough reviews Tom. It is very helpful to be able to observe the game mechanics and design of so many games I would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.
Yes, it will be releases this autumn :)
Which is the best to buy first? Cities and Knights is too complicated for the people I play with right now. This one looks similar to Seafarers, but adds more. Thoughts?
Yes!! I often play with this including helpers, frenimies, and that 5-6 extension.
Seafarers and traders & barbarians have simple scenarios
4:50 You have to put back your settlers and your ship Not only One.
The reason for this ist you normally need 2 roads plus settlement which Cost you 8 ressources but ship plus settlers cost only 6 ressources
Also If the Number for the Piraten laser ist Roller you geht 2 Gold but since it is Not ressource Like Wood.., you will get 1 extra Gold If you geht nothing else.

I wanna know if I have to buy the seafarers expansion

Great review. This might be a good way to mix up game night, especially if you can play w/ fish, w/o fish, with pirates, w/o, etc.
Since the tile numbers are separated it is probably to even out the distribution of good and bad production areas on either side of the map.
Thanks for the explanation! helps out to show this video to my friends to help them understand how to play E&P. We are all so use to playing seafarers its good to start something new! thanks again!
I would have to agree with this. C&K is my favorite

This a turn based game. Whoever was there first gets the fish
You can only load fish on your movement phase so the person who gets a turn first will get the fish. The council of catan never gives gold
Can the ship's sail on the outside hexes or only between the two islands?
I have vandalized the hexes of my CATAN game recently. Maybe it is time to pull them out again and actually play the game with them. I am a bit of CATAN purist... I am not a fan of any of the other expansions but maybe this one will be the one that makes it all fit together.

There would so many pieces to deal with that it's not going to be fun anymore
looks like fun. now if only my pre-order would hurry up.
i'm gonna try playing seafarers with the gold rule added.
Some thoughts right of the bat:

Can I use a 4th edition E&P expansion with a 5th edition base game?
Klaus Teuber's Catanization
Slowly? Catan has been a Civ Light game since at least Seafarers, honestly it's probably been a Civ game since C+K.
What is the maximum size of the board?
Super helpull thanks!!
Muito bom.
Obrigada pela análise. 😊
Sailors + Natives = ?? Historically I know what happens. Way to go Catan! :P
what is the point of seperating the tiles into moon and sun?? they all seem the same to me @@?
>You will find that there is very little trading in this game.
Trading is probably the only mechanic that catan still does better than any other board game... This game seems like it removed everything that made catan unique, including good and bad aspects.
food to power up the sailor maybe? =)
can you use all the catan exspations a t once
Joshua Roberts No. Would be amazing feature but would be too complicated.
yes you can! www.reddit.com/r/Catan/comments/2xqlat/catan_citiesknights_explorerpirates/
It's your game and you can do with it whatever you want.
Wool to make the sails........
Disgusting that pieces falling

Sheep powered ships huh. Must have been before they had hamsters.
I like it!
Cities and knights is the best!
This looks very ordinary. To me it feels broken and drawn out for no other reason than to make more money rather than make a new game.
This is quite likely 100 % correct :P
ci9ties and knights was great! and it can be combined unlike this one! cities and knights looks funner than this one!
I thought i youst invented it and it already did exsist
this guys so skibidi
This game is poop
