Most underrated Pro Tip: No sore losers allowed! This game is vicious! Most of it is player related. Players will backstab, gang up on, ignore, destroy and betray one another. This is part of the fun! And you must chose players who will laugh and have fun getting obliterated with you. Its never fun when everyone isn't enjoying it.
+Briohny Butler Yeah, you really need a dedicated group in order to play it. Just explaining the entire rules takes about two hours, in which most people are falling asleep. But otherwise, this game is sweet.
I think the potential length of the games is determined by the composition of your gaming group. I never had a game last more than 3 hours. That involved breaking out the box, setting up the board, and distributing the pieces. Our group was pretty focused on winning the game and not screwing around. Not that screwing around is a bad thing, but when the host has a wife-imposed cut-off time, things tend to get focused.
Absolutely my favorite board game of all time. It certainly does take a group of people who don't mind having a game require you to have advanced decision making processes, but if you have a solid group of friends that can sit down with you for 4-7 hours...you won't come away upset. Great review!
since watching this video i have purchased twilight imperium and introduced it to a group of board game playing friends. it has become our new favourite, we play it at every opportunity and we all love it. They loved it even more when i bought one of the expansions, it truly is an epic game and i agree with Tom in that the only downside is that it takes a long time to play. The shortest time we have managed a 6 player game is 7 hours including set up and pack up, but it is still just awesome
This and the following video you made covering this game has defiantly got me very interested. The only thing that makes me sad though is I am moving and hopefully I can find a new awesome gaming group I can fit in with and hopefully play this one day. Even though you just skimmed the surface you did a great job trying to cover as many aspects as possible and the core concept. My only suggestion on improving this review would be in the future is coming back and doing a more "detailed" look into how things interweave with one another to create possible scenarios. Either way thanks for making a great rookies explanation of the game!
It's the first video I saw from you and it made me subscribe. :) Just one thing: Though this may be a personal preference: I think handing out races randomly can be a lot of fun and lead to a really nice playing experience. (I would however suggest one random 're-pick' with the race picked first removed ... just in case a player get's the one race that dictates a playing style he really hates for example.)
Component drop longer than some videos! I have an event this month where a bunch of married guys have a Saturday off filled with gluttony and Twilight Imperium. We are all looking forward to it and those who have had to decline are sufficiently jealous. Great review.
It can be really hard to get people to play games that require long play times. You need to make an effort to block out a section of time to play the thing which means in a lot of cases, you often need to schedule a play session in advance which as you get older and people start families, can become increasingly difficult. That said, Twilight Imperium is still an amazing experience if you've got the time to sit down and actually play it from start to finish.
Have you ever thought about doing explanation videos for some of the more complicated games Tom? Just something that we could send to the members of our gaming groups for them to learn the game. Just an idea.
Is it just his his sense of humor: when he references the big ships as the death stars, and then later explains a rule variant his friends play where a fighter can skim the trenches-- and says "can't remember what movie that is from"
"Of course with this many pieces, component drop will be kind of excessive right? Not at dice tower!" *waterfall of components.. *behind the scenes "Kids. Daddy has a work for you."
true, but to be fair they are pretty awesome games. how was the ftl beta? im really keen to get it but i found out about the kickstarter after it was finished so i have to wait until release :(
I watched the SU&SD documentary. The designers said they chose to call it Alpha, Beta and Delta specifically because they didn't want people busy to call it the A-hole or B-hole or D-hole.
Firstly I would like to say this is a great game. Expensive, but worth it. A few tips, ALWAYS keep this game sorted or setup will take forever. Don't play with 3 players one will always go away mad. Be ready for the long haul the SHORTEST game i've played was 8 hours long. longest was 14 hours. Lastly if you think you'll like this game but won't like the logistics or cost, theres a game called ENDLESS SPACE which is basically the same, almost better, on Steam. for like $20
Love that component drop. Highly comedic, yet quite practical. Would you like a coffee too Tom? It's just a quick hop to the next state where they have a lovely artesian well....It makes a dynamite Americano!
I was not gonna ask since it isn't a big deal, but then the comment about commenters nitpicking pronunciation made me do it. :) Hacan. Shouldn't that be pronounced like a K? Like lycan, helicopter, arcane, etc.? And I mean it as a question.
TI4 is sitting on my closet.
"I cannot see they'll make a fourth"
*cue laughter*

I agree fully!
Never take this down Tom. This video is honestly the best overview video than any others out there.
just came for the component drop!
2:02 has been my favorite component drop so far... :P
I would love to give this game a go or buy it, but I don't think I'd ever convince any of my friends/game group to play it with me

Trying to pick up and organize that component drop would be a nightmare for me!

That component drop shows Tom's dedication... afterwards he had to put it all away!
I was thinking the same thing: It took 2 hours to sort the components out after that clip! :D

Nice work Tom... You're a great reviewer... it's always fun to watch your videos! Keep it up!
Amazing to see how Tom's game storage/shelves has evolved over the years.
"This is the third edition and I cannot see they making a fourth. (...) This edition cannot be improved upon"
Great game, but it could use some more components
Ultimate Mess XD !
It's the first video I saw from you and it made me subscribe. :)

Awwww! I was hoping the component drop was going to fill all the way up to the camera lens. :(
this is the best review of this game ive seen on the internet. Props to you sir. now to find a UK distributer.. So hard :(

thank you so much for doing this, i've been waiting forever for this awesome review :-D
@Xa3HaTA Aye xD Got it for my birthday, havent played it yet though.
@16:38 You have space docks, where you can build more space. (Say what?)
. . . So, it is 'Masters of Orion', the board game?
This was great. Can't wait for part 2.
Have you ever thought about doing explanation videos for some of the more complicated games Tom? Just something that we could send to the members of our gaming groups for them to learn the game. Just an idea.
Great review! I wish my friends and I had the time to play this game. It looks immensely strategic and epic!
its awesome... they've added a lot since my earlier videos and its going to be released on steam for everyone on the 14th of Sept.
Great review Tom!
hope u r going to compare it to Eclipse really soon, I dont know which one to buy. (I am more inclined to Eclipse..)
good review. plan on adding this to my board game collection.
what do you recommend: Eclipse or Twilight Imperium?
Is it just his his sense of humor: when he references the big ships as the death stars, and then later explains a rule variant his friends play where a fighter can skim the trenches-- and says "can't remember what movie that is from"
i got this for christmas. :)
I know what they can change in the 4th edition: The strategy card you complained about, which automatically gives the player 2 VP. ;)
Oh man, where did you get that awesome tie?
Lol you sounded so serious when you said "I don't know what movie that's from"
No part 4? , and here we are in 2017, part 4 announced :D
"Of course with this many pieces, component drop will be kind of excessive right? Not at dice tower!" *waterfall of components.. *behind the scenes "Kids. Daddy has a work for you."
15:28
"Movemen-T *spit*"
*A tiny droplet of spit land on the right tile underneath the B portal, planetary bombardment failed
how complex is this game to learn, like can you open it, take a look at the rule book, and learn it, or is it a lot different than that
yea i saw the release date on their website. very much excited :D
@tarkonis After you play it can you tell me the approximate time it takes to play it?Thank you.
Great review, Tom! My favorite game of all time.
true, but to be fair they are pretty awesome games. how was the ftl beta? im really keen to get it but i found out about the kickstarter after it was finished so i have to wait until release :(
Now you mention it, I Did notice a severe shift recently
COMPONENTS FOR DAYS!!!
TOM!!!! where did you get that tie!!!
We usually do randomly draw three each, pick one of the three.
28:35 No 4th edition? THINK AGAIN! I'm glad they did though :) It looks amazing
I just drooled through the component drop...
i totally just noticed hes wearing a twilight imperium tie
Great component drop! :D
Question for Sam... I know you have played many games of TI3. Have you tried preset maps?
I watched the SU&SD documentary. The designers said they chose to call it Alpha, Beta and Delta specifically because they didn't want people busy to call it the A-hole or B-hole or D-hole.
@MrColbster82 You really need to play it a couple times to get to grips with it. Well worth the effort though!
LOL loved the component drop :-)
this is truly an epic game, my all-time favorite with expansions and 6-8 player it is unmatched.
Were did you find that tecno tree?
This has to be the best component drop, ever.
Dropping unprotected cards makes my heart hurt :(
The component drop - you think it's going to end but it just keeps going.
Not shown: The ten hours it took to pick up all the pieces and sort them from the component drop.
Firstly I would like to say this is a great game. Expensive, but worth it.
A few tips, ALWAYS keep this game sorted or setup will take forever.
Don't play with 3 players one will always go away mad.

Does component drop for Twilight Imperium 3, 1 hour later, still doing it!
Yea awesome AWESOME game. But I have the same problem, bi-annual event :( We can rarely fit it in a 5 hour evening
@Xa3HaTA will do, im going to play a 3 player solitaire game first to learn the rules, then introduce 2 of my friends.
I had a quick question, what does "plus 1 on all combat rolls" mean? How does this effect battles??
Seth Andrew add 1 to your dice roll. For example, if you roll a 5, make it a 6.
Just in case he wasn't pretending not to know; The Trench Run, Starwars Episode 4: A new hope.
Hi Tom. I'm having a bad time trying to choose between this game and Xia: Legends of a Drift System. Which one is better for you?
TI3 is ranked higher.
Do you know if it (and it's expansions) are still in print?
Can you say Masters of Orion?
2:04 to 2:30 must be hell to sort back after the component drop.
Love that component drop. Highly comedic, yet quite practical. Would you like a coffee too Tom? It's just a quick hop to the next state where they have a lovely artesian well....It makes a dynamite Americano!
OMG, that would be so awesome...
Epic component drop
1:06 "It was huge!" WAS!? IT IS! LOOK AT HOW MUCH SPACE IT TAKES UP!
What is the game eclipse about?
@tarkonis amazon?
I was not gonna ask since it isn't a big deal, but then the comment about commenters nitpicking pronunciation made me do it. :) Hacan. Shouldn't that be pronounced like a K? Like lycan, helicopter, arcane, etc.? And I mean it as a question.
loser has to put away the game

When we play games we always have the winner put the game away to minimize gloating.
Why are the expansions so expensive??
Saw this review - then brought the game. EPIC is want I want!!
They already did in the first expansion.
yes, it was
I'd play this game only to pass class struggle each time.
I bet it took just as long to clean & organize the component drop as it would playing the game!
Absolutely Epic Component Drop Ever! :)
The shortest game I had was 4 hours...
It happened once only. The rest(30ish) were all 6+ hours
Epic
the trench run on the war sun comes from star wars when the rebels attacked the death star
This is the best game ever; atleast with the expansion and some homemade balancing rules.
You should review the new a Game of Thrones game , and Talisman.
While I have to admit that this looks very much like a good game, it doesn't look like one I would enjoy, if that makes any sense.
This is one of my favorite games of all time, but it is too complex for many groups. :(
Coolstuffinc.com has a restock. 14 copies at time of post.
for the sheer amount of components, or because they shouldn't be treated that way? :)
i feel sorry for who ever had to sort out the component drop :/
Tommy's daughters ofc! ;)
I want this so bad but I don't think anyone would play it with me
Probably at BGG. Google boardgamegeek, search for "Twilight Imperium".
