I love the idea of "villain OCD" where the villain, Wesker in this case, simply MUST leave keys, cranks, batteries, whatever, in some convoluted but ultimately accessible place or they just can't move on.
"Okay, I locked the garage door, put the key in the third flowerpot on the top shelf of the greenhouse, put the ladder back in the living room (where I just used it to change a lightbulb earlier, but it's a good spot for it), and the living room is only accessible if you get the decorative jewel (that's missing from a gargoyle's eye in the lobby) that I just threw in the swimming pool in the backyard.
Phew, now I can finally relax and get on with my wor-DAMMIT! I forgot to put the battery to the pump that drains the pool in the storage shed! (That can only be reached by...)

I think it's in character. The man uses everyone as a test subject. The puzzles are just apart of it. And also ways to abuse the characters. Think of Lisa in REmake. She was a monster. But on top of it. Locked behind one of the most convoluted puzzles of the mansion. You're pissing off Jill/Chris. But also Lisa who's been locked down there for god knows how long.

The one unanswered question about Resident Evil I have is, How is it possible that such a great, well laid out idea for a video game is so difficult to adapt to the screen? It boggles the mind how after 30 years, no one has even come close to making a worthy adaptation to this beloved franchise. Considering that Resident Evil is essentially a collage of popular horror ideas, you'd think making a movie would be a walk in the park.

    • @fattiger6957

The problem is that Hollywood has a disdain for video games, seeing it as a lesser form of entertainment. So whenever a studio gets their hand on a popular video game license, they always think they could do better so they just change everything.
That same sentiment applies to everything when it comes to Hollywood. Look at all the great novels that have terrible film adaptations that deviate completely from the source material. Or garbage live action adaptations of popular anime.

Yeah I'm a bit frustrated with that because After the failure of the Netflix show I decided to start writing my own Resident Evil fan film. But to be fair, I'm not going the cheesy route. I'm using the REmake as my blueprint and I'm going to make it as close to a 1:1 adaptation as possible down to cutting two versions of the film, one with Chris as the protagonist, and the other with Jill. The only original content I'm adding is I'm going to tell a story about one of the bizarre murders as the intro or cold open and it will be a story I am crafting but is heavily influenced to be a more detailed visual representation of the descent into zombification in the same vein as the Keeper's Diary or more well known as the "Itchy Tasty" file.

I always assumed there were various secret ways around the mansion that we, the player, never knew about. I mean, Christ, some of the more "public" paths were convoluted enough. I played the original Resident Evil with my sister and we constantly joked about what Umbrella employees had to go through just to get to the toilet; shields, keys, tiger eyes, oh my.

There's a funny cartoon parody of the architect of all the places where resident evil takes place. It's basically the manager of the building complaining to the builder about why he felt the need to design things like this.
"Yeah, in order for us to turn on the lights in the bathroom. The switch is located 3 rooms away and we have to use a suggestively disturbing switch"

    • @Skitskl33
      @Skitskl33 9 місяців тому +2

The in game explanation is pretty great honestly.
Spencer is a Bond level eccentric villain so he hired a famous architect (George Trevor) to design his secret labyrinthian mansion in the mountains only to decide that the architect and his family knew too much and needed to die.
George tries to escape the mansion but gets lost in his own creation and slowly begins going mad before he finds a room containing a gravestone with his name on it placed there by Spencer.
The whole thing reads like an Edgar Allen Poe horror story.

Enrico was making his way through the underground from the training facility (as depicted in Resident Evil Zero; Rebecca bumps into him and says that was the last time she saw him alive). I’m guessing that was added in the prequel to try to address that little plot hole.
Wesker has full access to every area of the mansion (as he worked there for Umbrella). I always assumed he had master keys and knew lots of routes inaccessible to players. That’s how he takes your captured team mate to the prison. As to why, my guess was either to gain leverage against you, use them as bait for you or to further his research by pitting them against more creatures, which was his motivation for luring you there.
Barry’s disappearance I just put down to the fact that at that point there was no sequel. Furthermore, Jill seems genuinely surprised in the original end of RE3 when he turns up in the helicopter to save her. That would make sense of Chris’ story was canon, as she would have thought him dead at the mansion.
Richard and the snake I explain away as a bit of Wesker’s shenanigans or the fact that although the mansion looks decrepit, it’s actually far more advanced. Perhaps unbeknownst to the player the door locks are interchangeable or can accept multiple keys, or they can be unlocked and locked remotely.
Forest may have been injured elsewhere and been finished off by crowd (he was pecked to death but that might have just finished him off). His injuries could have just been bad luck or a surprise attack. He staggered outside to get away or rest and the crows finished him off. The grenade launcher (which isn’t present when Chris finds him) may have been useless against small targets like the crows.

In one scene he looked like a piss poor knock off version of Blade. I bet even hobby cosplayers are more capable of making a better and superior costume than the designers did. There're more plot holes like holes in a Swiss cheese and then Wesker's 2 annoying pain in the ass daughters who acted like spoiled brats are the icing on the shit cake. And don't get me started on the Umbrella CEO who randomly started dancing in one scene because reasons... People assume that the random dance scene was in there because Netflix could better promote the show on TikTok because dance clips are very popular on that sm platform. That's actually very plausible. The overall plot and concept of the show was an absolute mess and I'm still puzzled that this show got greenlit by Netflix. That's a darned cheek if you ask me...

Some of those are some interesting questions you pose Drinker. I think Chris being in the prison cell is the easiest to come up with a head canon reasoning. Chris was the best shot on Alpha team so it's not implausible that once he was locked out of the front door, he could easily turn and focus to take out the dogs and run out of ammo in the process (after all they all expended some on the run to the mansion) leaving him an easy hostage for Wesker to take once Jill and Barry left the main hall. Though that begs the question of why don't you hear him hit the door at any point and what you pointed out about all the puzzles (which I didn't think about until now) why are all the puzzles still unsolved if Wesker took Chris down to the lab? Perhaps he ran through the forest with Chris to the fountain and used the door to the heliport and entered the lab that way, put Chris in the cell, came back up, and welded it shut. Completely ridiculous logic but fits with Resident Evil's ridiculousness. Fun little video.

  • @Kagamid
    @Kagamid 9 місяців тому +1

I waited years to have this discussion. Thanks for bringing it back.
    1. I think as Jill, Chris was likely separated in the chaos and got in the mansion another way. He may have worked his way deeper into the mansion before Barry or Wesker (both?) locked him in the cell. Playing as Chris, Jill was more than likely walked into the lab by Barry before he locked her up.
    2. For Forrest, I think he was attacked by one of the dogs before getting into the mansion. He then limped to the second floor and was finished off by the birds. Makes sense that he was already injured since a STARS member being killed by birds alone would've been a little embarrassing.
    3. I would guess Richard locked the door to the hallway he was in himself. For the Yawn room, maybe the door was open before got attacked. When he closed it to escape it could've locked.
    4. I think your theory on Wesker locking Enrico inside and putting the battery back is solid. Wesker does like to play games so maybe he was curious how far the others would go.
    5. Maybe there was a butler who wasn't aware anything was wrong yet until the outbreak spilled from the lab into the mansion lobby. Or he picked up the papers on his way back from his 2 week vacation. He placed the papers in the library and met his end running into one of the zombies. Hey it could happen :).
    6. I think the infinite naked zombies are just the games way of showing the number of human bodies Umbrella was experimenting on. How kind of them to only attack in small groups.
    7. The door may have been welded shut by someone trying to escape a zombie or bioweapon. A nice touch would've been seeing someone with a welding kit dead on the other side when you get to the heliport.
    8. The parts of the lab you have access to seemed pretty small so there likely was a lot more you don't get to see. The dog pens could've been in those areas.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Keeper continuing to write as zombie. How was he able to keep writing and even spelling just fine? Maybe his infection affected him a little different and he retain some of his cognitive functions before completely changing. The T-virus does cause mutations after all. Thanks again for reminding us what started it all.

Thanks Drinker. A fun little trip down nostalgia street with a game I really love.
Prior to the RE series, a game I truly loved that had a very slightly similar tone, was "Realms of the Haunting" by Gremlin (1996)
That game was quite difficult and one of the factors was because as you started approaching the final act, you lost opportunity to collect healing potions and eventually ammo as well.
Drove me insane dealing with that (fun fact, my young teen daughter beat it before I did!) 🤯
Incredible game for its time though and I HIGHLY recommend it, if you can even find it anymore.
    Cheers mate!

Resident evil 1 on the PS1 was a most formative moment in my life. Blew my mind. The opening minute of this video alone brought so many memories to the forefront of my mind. Now….. back to the rest of the video.

In the novelization if the first game by S.D Perry it is suggested that the mansion has a lot of secret doors and passageways used by Wesker that aren't mapped out.
And it seems like a reasonable explanation considering all the strange puzzles you need to solve to open certain doors and find certain items in the game.
But again, it's just speculation on my part

This is one of my favorite videos you've made. I like these.
I always wanted to know why Forest, the "sniper", had a grenade launcher and no sniper rifle.

drinker, please do more of this! seeing you happily indulge your curiosity rather than waste your time on criticizing the godawful dregs of media is so much more fulfilling

Man I needed this. This videogame came out when I was 10 and it literally changed my life. The only thing I had every played close to as scary at the time was Doom. Seriously if Resident Evil and Doom never came out I probably wouldn't much of a gamer or horror buff at all and I probably wouldn't be a gun nut either..... well that I blame more on Half-Life, Counter Strike and Rainbow Six but still RE and Doom directed me towards those games.

May as well throw my two cents in here. I’ve been a big fan of Resident Evil since the second’s release, I was too young to appreciate the first game. However, the pair that will always be my GOAT, and that I always go back to play every few months is the Resident Evil: Outbreak games! I’ve played every level as every character, and only recently have I actually tried beating them on Hard and Avery Hard mode. I did manage to get through Hard, but VH is now giving me a run for my money in the final act of the first game.
Would love to hear Drinker’s thoughts on the Outbreak series!

🧡🧡🧡 I love this sooo much! I need a resident evil movie where the story follows an OCD Wesker sneakily setting up traps and resetting puzzles.

The waterfall actually makes sense - it isn't running when you show up, you have to trigger it in order to drain the pool so that you can cross on your way to the guard house.

RE1 is one of those games I only played last year when I set up my PSX. Everyone I could've talked to about it was either too young or too old to remember it well. More of this please. Enlighten the younglings about our older treasures.

From what I remember naked lab zombies are test subjects and that area with the door access to the lab, at least from what i remember from re1.5 we were supposed to explore areas like that in the discarded RE2 plot

the best part of the video is how you end it with "go away now" rather than "subscribe now" LOL. Clicking the like button for that.
