Non racist have never needed that. I have never been not able to sympathies with character no matter which skin color, sex or species they represent IF they are well written. Never expected that stories should have characters that are images of myself.

I’m totally with you on the Ada voice. She’s always been a femme fatale who’s intentions were vague and could kiss you as easily as she could kill you. The voice should definitely match that kind of personality, but the actress was VERY dull in the delivery…and the best part is she called everyone racist for not liking an Asian person’s performance. Imagine that…it’s not like Ada is a well loved RE character who happens to be Asian herself.

I know it's not the most common of opinions, but I actually really love the way the original RE4 looks. 😅 I know it's pretty bleak, but the atmosphere always reminds me of the chilly yet serene, overcast autumn days I used to enjoy as a kid growing up in Michigan. It's one of the main reasons RE4 is such a comforting game for me, despite how, well, horrific it is.
Likewise, I find the lake section in the Remake to be incredibly comforting as well. Pretty much for the exact same reasons I mentioned above in regards to the original.

  • @LastFantasiaWeapons

I honestly loved how campy and goofy the original Resident Evil 4 was, and removing most of the camp for the remake robs the villains of a lot of personality. The villains no longer hijack Leon's codec just to taunt him, because why on Earth would they do that? How would they do that? This is a lot more believable, but now all the dialogue is squeezed into their boss fight and you can't hear any of it because there's an entire boss fight going on. So many of Leon's best one liners were in the codec calls, and now most of them are either gone or you can't hear them over screaming and gunfire.
I've heard that the voice actress for Ada in some movie was brought in, and she gave the same style of delivery she gave before.

Its curious how you did not mention how it was updated for MODERN AUDIENCES in relation to some of the cut dialogue (particularly the ones about flirting).
Also, Krauser performance just unbearable in the remake, worse than Ada if you ask me.

    • @mysteryace2129
      @mysteryace2129 Рік тому +5

OG Krauser was just a hard ass shoed in rival with a jealousy complex stemmed from a superiority complex. A basic Shadow the Hedgehog or Vegeta clone. Here we see that he is a mad man who is pissed despite the fact he is one of the most skilled soldiers in the world that he was still thrown away as collateral for a science experiment from those with more money and a higher position of "power" in the government.
A pawn who survived being sacrificed on a chess board played by Elites. In Chess the most powerful piece that makes it to the end of the board is a pawn as it can be anything it wants.
Krauser's whole battle with Leon takes an entirely new dynamic because of this added development. Now it isn't just a skill soldier rival/former mentor fighting Leon. It's a man who was once honorable now has been changed from an incident caused by higher ups that cost him to lose nearly everything with he himself being scarred by it. Almost the same situation Leon is now in after Raccoon City.
Krauser fights Leon personally because of this inner conflict within himself as despite him wanting power to cause chaos he also wants his honor back as he hopes he is wrong that power isn't the only thing by seeing that a soldier/honorable man really can make a difference. He can't pick a side himself because he doesn't want to be betrayed again as the first cause that he fought for is no longer there. Krauser wins then it means power and getting it in underhanded means is the way of the world with honor/skill/ and Morals not meaning anything. Leon wins means that those things that I mentioned still makes a difference. As the theme of change is relevant in this game with Leon, Luis, and Krauser being the focus of it.

Not sure I'm onboard with this sequel, there's some weird, backwards design at work in it. Like, we don't get a knife to preserve our ammo because it has limited durability. Why does it have limit durability? Because there's a parry system. Why is there a parry system? Because you need to be able to block instant kill moves. Why do we need to parry those? Because you don't have the speed and maneuverability you did in the original to reliably move out of the way of such attacks to add more "tension" to the fights. Why is there an ammo crafting system? Because there's less ammo pickups in this version of the game to add "tension".
You know I played the original RE4 because it was fun and fast-paced compared to the rest of the series, which had become tiredly formulaic and frustrating. It had a lot of action and 80's movie charm while still balancing it out with moments of genuine horror (everyone remembers the introduction to the regenerators). So these little "additions" feel more like they're trying to change the whole pace of the game, when really that was what breathed new life into the series in the first place. We had more tanky and intelligent enemies that we had to develop tactics around, like hobbling them and often making sure to just clip them first so they couldn't wind up their attacks before they could be addressed, allowing us to quickly respond to large groups of enemies surrounding us thanks to stun mechanics and a main character the moved quickly. We were able to save our ammo for boss fights and set piece moments thanks to having a reliable melee option, and it still required a measure of skill to utilize this well and not get overwhelmed. They decided to do it all "different" in the remake, but not necessarily "better".
I understand that RE4 was a double-edged sword and that it caused CAPCOM to over correct things one direction and delude the series moving forward, but this game struck the best balance between action thrills and tense horror elements. It'll always be highly regarded for revitalizing the series and bringing in new players. Maybe it was just too much to imagine that CAPCOM could recapture that this time around.

"Not manage to pull new fans but RE4 fans will enjoy the 4MAKE." This just feels off to me. I've had the impression that the game sold to new audiences rather well. A lot of people's first or second RE. However there are plenty of critiques, particularly from old school RE fans, even from colleagues such as Mauler and the EFAP crew.
The "weakpoints" aren't consistent like the original. Not exactly a flaw on its own depending on how they go about it but I feel like they could've made the game more difficult in other ways. That consistency on its own is the sole reason I prefer the og.
Combine the previous gripe with the removal of the laser. Sure they could've moved to a reticle but they also added bloom. Now you have to aim momentarily to cut down on the random shot placement. Fine for other games but in the combat system focused around staggers, just no. That precision was required for the game to feel rewarding. There was some skillful play thats been reduced to randomness from that change. The tmp was massacred. Its just spray and pray at this point. Good luck doing the shooting challenges. And the magnums are intended as boss killers but most bosses are faster than the magnum's aim time. I rarely used it and defaulted to my tried and true blacktail/shotgun/knife parries over randomized shots (or possible damage) from the tmp or magnum.
Those are my biggest gripes as the core gameplay loop of RE4 were what made it. That and the innovation at the time that many just don't understand in today's gaming. However you also hinted at disliking the "direction" change for the series. You're entitled to feel that way and I'll admit that looking back at it in 2023, in a post "return to survival horror" (RE7/8), that yea, RE4 was just something else in the entirety of the franchise. But back in 2005, RE had various releases of the same formula and was growing stale (like you referenced). RE3 seen a resurgence of fans post 3make that it never had. CV was overlooked by wider audiences despite the very vocal group calling for its remake today. RE1 and 2 have consistently been viewed as the OG and the improvement (tho I'd argue most are actually thinking of 1make rather than OG). The series was looking for an experimental entry to break the mold (outbreak) and RE4 finally did that. All RE4 really did was move the camera over the shoulder and add new mechanics. Still saddled with tank controls, now you can be precise in your shots. To adjust for difficulty they added more enemies at a time, made them faster, throw things, etc. The same resource management was there. The bones of RE4 was very much RE. Even looking at the "lack of horror" argument that is assumed these days. I can't help but disregard that opinion as anyone who has played older REs knows that the "horror" came from the tension (clunky controls largely) and gore. The same tension and gore is present in 4. It is reduced but old school RE was never all that scary so I simply don't understand the argument. We've always had the option to just blow our enemies away. The decision making just shifted from "is it worth the ammo to kill" to "how to kill efficiently to save ammo." The plot of every RE was cheese/cringe and we loved it (jill sandwich). Every game ended with giant boss battles and rocket launcher explosions accompanied by a loud orchestra. And there were plenty of over the top "cheese" dialogue (you want stars). You mention salazar seeming out of place and ludicrous but just look at the villain of RE0 for example. All that to say that 4 just seems like a natural progression for the series imo and I never understood the complaint. Particularly later in your video when you reference the "grounded" nature of the old school REs. They weren't cultists but the giant labs, various BOWs, again the villains of 0 and CV. There was some strange over the top shenanigans in the old RE.
Going back to the villains for a moment. I have to question when the last time you played 4 was? "Saddler is as much of a nothing burger as the last time." While I don't think Saddler is particularly great in either version, the original definitely had the better version. He has a physical presence early on at the church, kills luis giving him something heinous over the 4make version, and the og doesn't attempt to have ashley kill leon before simply letting him go. OG saddler never actually attempts to kill leon until the finale. He'd rather convert him. However 4make added an additional scene that creates inconsistencies in his character and motivations. You didn't even mention the calls where most of the fleshing out of Saddler and Salazar took place. There was A LOT of quotable/memorable moments in those interactions and some much needed character that was lacking from 4make (right hand comes off?). I'm not saying its ideal but 4make was certainly a downgrade whereas RE4 leaned into what it had. Krauser was overall an improvement but was given luis's kill but he didn't need it as he was the one behind the kidnapping. Especially since Saddler NEEDED something more than just Mike. One verdugo is unaccounted for (notes have speculated that he's in ada's dlc but whatever). And U3 is just gone (notes referenced "U3" again possibly ada's dlc but its cut content all the same).
I've gotten a bit type happy so I'll cut it short. 4make does some great things and I genuinely loved it as a fan of the og RE4. But this video seemed a bit lazy and a step down from the usual content. Some things may seem nit picky or in the weeds regarding the comparisons. However I feel like that is important when addressing a remake. Maybe you're not a gamer or whatever. By the end of the video I couldn't help but feel like this was a video kept in the pocket and not a genuine review. Solid game, solid views to cover said game. An enjoyable game it may be. With a title like "An Excellent Remake," I thought it needed more substantiation because I can't help but disagree.

Eh to each their own. I'm a die-hard fan of the original RE4, but I really didn't enjoy the remake. The tone is a lot more serious, more grounded. I enjoyed the cheesy one-liners and fantasy elements of the original. They cut a lot of that out in favor of a more realistic experience, I guess. Combat system felt wonky, enemies don't really stagger like in the original, which makes the game more difficult yes but rewards you less for accurate shooting. Overall...ehhhhh. Glad some people enjoyed it at least. Just wasn't for me.

A problem I have with the RE4 remake that I haven't seen many people talk about is the voice of Wesker in all the other games despite being portrayed by multiple actors over the years each of those actors where trying to do the same type of voice this new guy sounds like a completely different character. If all the other actors for Wesker portrayed him differently like how each of the actors for Leon did throughout the series I wouldn't really care but the way he speaks has been consistent throughout the series.

I think I disagree with the final statement. The remake is fine overall. The story is better written for sure, but almost everything gameplay related felt like a downgrade. I think it's just a preference thing at the end of the day. A lot of small things like more annoying enemy AI tracking, breakable knife, and more annoying ammo system added up to make me enjoy the game less. I remember beating the remake and thinking, "Do I honestly want to replay this again?"
Honestly I think so many people are calling this a masterpiece because compared to so much else coming at right now, it is. But on its own, I'd give it a 7 out of 10 at best. Pretty good but not the amazing industry defining experience the original was.

I think a lot of that comes from the less responsive controls in the remake. You could run and stop on a dime in the original making dodging feel better by giving you flexibility in movement. The remake just feels loose and slow compared and you have to commit to your movement more, making it less forgiving imo. Still loved it though and i think it plays better overall but yes definitely not a masterpiece like the original.

It's still crazy though how Devil May Cry was the original RE4 and later both became their own thing, Devil May Cry was a accidental game that turned out to be a pretty freaking sweet franchise thanks to RE4 and Capcom.

If you wonder why that is, you should go look at the english cast of RE4R and compare it to the Japanese voice cast: The American cast is entirely with the exception of like two actors - one of which is Leon's - basically all shitty d-list recast netflix actors, over half of them were from things like The Handmaid's Tale. Almost none of them had any voicework experience at all, if any in video games.

For the sequel I was almost certain that she was going to get turned into a SFC but they didn't do that. Yes she's a little more competent, but she is respectfully frightened of this entire situation, and is doing her absolute best but lacks any combat awareness. The entire segment where you play as her is filled with her being absolutely terrified but also refusing to give up because she wants to help the person that she cares about. One of the weirder and more "me" complaints that I have is that Ashley, who was infamous in the original, has now been made pretty much irrelevant. Her revamped state actually makes the game easier now that she has been turned into a practically immortal piece of bait, instead of a character that you are supposed to protect. Sure, a lot of people hate escort quests, but making her just an npc that exists purely to put nude mods on was probably too far on the other direction.
My other complaints range from the removal of pretty much all ambient music, to the weird changes to characters that end up making them even less effective than in the original. Saddler had banter and cracked jokes with Leon in the original, adding to the campy-ness, and while I appreciate capcom adding Krauser's backstory to the main game, they turned him into a dude that was locked in a basement with only a vhs tape of Apocalypse Now. I also find the removal of what I, and probably many more, would consider one of the more iconic sections from the original, the U3 gauntlet, to be rather egregious.
There are a lot of positives in the new version, but I'll just repeat my original point: a great game that is far less memorable and lasting than the original.
    direction.

Yeah the gripes realy are absurd. And you are not to decide which game is more memorable.

I have zero problems with other remakes because I haven't played the original PS1 trilogy purely based on tank controls and limited saves. But RE4 og was my introduction to the series and I loved and it still is one of my all time favourites. I have 3 copies for all Playstations and sure I'm gonna buy the remake for PS5 when I have munty for that giant white block.
I'm just glad how good these remakes have been overall. I prefer 3 over 2, short games are much better in my eyes and RE4 looks a bit bloated what I've seen and is a bit too serious but I'll give it a chance.

Also, U-3 was definitely the coolest looking MF in the og and should've been in the remake, 0/118 already.

I've never played an RE game. Closest I've gotten to is playing as Jill in MvC2, and I only played that game because I like Mega Man, and the Marvel Universe. I've always wanted to try RE, but I never really committed to trying it. This seems like the best time to get into the series with RE4 Remake. Great review as always!

I thought Saddler and Salazar were MUCH less menacing in the remake, and Chief Mendez was far more terrifying in the OG.
Also, Luis looks almost exactly like that snake VICE reporter Matt Shea who backstabbed Andrew Tate.

It's not "excellent" at all lmao, cringe worthy meh shooter that has nothing of Resident Evil, meh story, terrible acting, removed parts, soulless and generic new chars personalities, Leon is a shadow of his former self, pure garbage , Trials Of Mana is an excellent Remake, def not this joke.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is so close to being perfect. Just a few WTF moments with Ashley's bad AI where she will stand up and take a bullet that was meant for an enemy, along with Ada's terrible voice acting

Lemme put on my tinfoil hat for a second here and say that after like 15 different voice actresses doing an amazing job every single time throughout the years, this was the first time she was protrayed by a woman of asian descent who clearly had no prevoius experience nor proper direction. No hate on the lady per se, but tell me how this wasn't a diversity hire in the dumb age of 'you have to look like the character you portray'
