VOLUME WARNING AT 11:54 - 11:56 I'm so sorry. Also Umbrella Chronicles 2 isn't a thing lol - it's called Darkside Chronicles. Don't know how that got past me in post.
Great video was glad to see someone actually address this. The absolute inconsistency of their character designs is so lazy, and the way they butcher Jill's pre established character is so trashy. Ignore the hate comments they probably only played the remakes. :/
Great video man it's nice to know that others are in the same boat as me on this + you brought up some really great and valid points good job! And thank you :)
They're voiced by the remake characters tho. The cgi movies came out before the remakes did so they had to go with an og design for leon and claire. But for jill? It made sense to go with remake and she's also being voiced by remake jill too. The remakes are cannon now.
@@lordpean I don’t know that I buy that argument. Yes, the CGI movies came out prior to the game remakes, but the most recent releases use the remake voice actors for other characters in addition to Jill. I wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised if Jill’s design in this movie was *based* on remake Jill, but to have her look identical to her RE3-make model is a really strange decision, considering the passage of time in universe. It’s a jarring inconsistency.
Jill has been the less character character I’ve ever seen. What’s crazy is that Chris also changes VA’s constantly yet his persona as a character is somewhat consistent.
honestly there are so many chris voice actors to list through yet they all do him decent enough because chris is just designed as a boy scout who's tough. I think the VA who matters most is Leon as matt mercer raised the bar on how good gruff leon could sound and i haven't noticed anyone match that except detective masterclass
Part of what made the characters feel so consistent prior to RE7 is that like their looks (for the most part), their voices were done in a way that smoothed nicely together. When I first watched Damnation, I couldn't tell that Paul Mercier and Sally Cahill had been replaced by Matt Mercer and Courtenay Taylor respectively. Even when it's fairly obvious like when Roger came on board, he still had that same vocal quality that Chris had in CV, the REmake, and Umbrella Chronicles. Now fast-forward to what they've done with the RE4 remake where you'd have no idea who Leon and Ada were by voice alone.
What's interesting is that they had the right idea with Chris in RE8: his facial features from re5 were still obviously prevalent, but they transitioned the face into the RE8 engine and made him older and I think it worked perfectly. At this point it's kinda too late to do that with Jill, but it has been done before. So it's kinda weird how inconsistent they are with Jill.
@@KRONOS115 Literally all they gotta do is de-age that according to the timeline and you've got your remake Chris. Hopefully they don't give him yet another face. I don't know if I can handle it.
I'm also sad. I went from a Jill fan to an Ada fan :( I used to love her so much. Idk she feels so masculine and "lesbianish" now. I don't mean that as an insult though
Hahaha. I was thinking the same thing. She must have a new strain of the t-virus that de-ages her. Honestly. I think it was easier to reuse her re3 remake model 😂
@@NickHazletonMusic It was already stated by Capcom that precisely that's the case. 😅 Edit: I am talking about the strain of the T Virus, you are actually right, that's the story with her young appearance.
It's funny, too. Because back in re3 remake Jill said she was gonna burn the clothes since you know they smell like the garbage from the sewers. Unless you want us to believe she either bought the extra outfit again or wash the heck out of it. Or she has a drawer full of blue tank tops
@Jeremy M that fair but I'm fairly certain her exact outfit and her wardrobe was in the middle of a nuclear blast. And if we're to consider she threw away the ones she had on. It's way to complicated lmao
@@tgabz obviously its juts a different 3d animation style. It is the exact same thing. They wanted to use the same design she had from the remake. So they just made her wear the same thing. On
4:12 "her portrayal of vocal performance & choice of words & body language shows she was designed by a Japanese dude" This actually made me remember that Jill is actually meant to be half Japanese, it was mentioned in the booklet or something to the original game if I remember correctly.
yep Jill is of mixed heritage, it was in one of the supplemental materials about her Japanese cousin coming to visit. Also if you look on her fridge in the 3make you can see family photos.
Chris punching the boulder was the completion of his character arc. It was beautiful. The writers could have created a sophomore scene where Chris monologued about 2007 American politics, but instead he punched a boulder.
I definitely agree about Ada and Jill. Claire on the other hand i can kinda see her developing into her sassy, overconfident version from Code Veronica if they do a remake of that.
@@SOSO_CREPITUS. To be honest I don't think it will change much, it may cut some filler, like RE4, but the story and mechanics won't be too different. The game was the best seller in the franchise for a long time, they cannot change too much if they want to have the same success as with RE4R.
I don’t know, I guess I just like Alyson Courts portrayal for her character. It’s so damn difficult to keep up with your favorite characters when Capcom refuses to establish news ones. It’s this cowardice to change, especially when Chris was meant to die in re6 to introduce piers as the new staple main character. Honestly I don’t understand why so many forget that many of their established characters start from humble, rookie beginnings, and Piers could have been the perfect mold for that…
Leon feels the most consistent in the remake timeline. His RE2R and RE4R counterparters feel much more logical towards him, becoming a grizzled veteran by the events of RE6/Vendetta.
Leon feels like the most *recent, you get away with talking out of your ass because children have never played re games outside the remakes. Leon is not a developed charicter in 4, is in 6, though it doesnt matter because people hate 5 and 6 because its action, even though every remake has played exactly like 5 and 6. Hes not a grizzled veteran, he litterally does 2, and 4 and nothing inbetween but work for the president because the president personally requested him, not because he earns it. Chris would kick his ass easily, but because hes the fan favorite they tied. No one even cares about any of the women in re, they might aswell make an alice game using the movie ip, to create a new char as shes the only recognizable female. If clair or jill dye thier hair and wear the same clothes you cant tell the difference thats why ada has been so progressively asian, she surpassed chun lee.
Something that also annoyed me is that there isn’t the scar from the mind control device in re5 even though the death island movie acknowledges the events in re5
In defense of Capcom character choices,... who follows this crapy Capcom movies anyway? These are the cheapest Corpo filler of all time. And are always crap.
@@juliohidalgo811 I think they're fun, even if not that substantial overall. It's dumb campy action for the sake of making cool fan service moments, that's what RE is all about.
Honestly with how Ada seems to be more attached and snarky and Leon seems less attached and more business-oriented/serious it seems like their personalities were swapped and the same goes for Claire who was more independent and hard and Jill who was more gentle and cautious. It feels like they were swapped too. Idk how these decisions were made and I'm alright with their changes in some ways but I do miss how they were originally.
Even though Claire was very independent and hard she was also always one of the most gentle and empathetic RE characters to ever exist. She was just such a nice, heart warming person, and they used to make that VERY clear about her, she was a very cool person even under pressure and had something very warm about her personality and the way she talked to people, she really cares about the people around her, and even against alexia, in her dream she had that became the game "Resident Evil Survivor 2 code veronica", she still took pity on her and didn't let Steve shoot her while she had not attacked yet, saying Alexia was still a human being. We don't get that Claire anymore since RE revelations 2 happend.
@@dandantsm6560 I dunno, in RE2R Claire seemed pretty warm and sympathetic to me. Yes, she felt a little girlish at times, but mostly just when talking to Leon, like she was flirting or something. That could be just because she WAS actually a young'ish college girl in 1998. The same voice actress portrayed a much more mature and more independent version of Claire in Infinite Darkness and Death Island, so tbh I have no problem with Claire.
I mean, the Leon/Ada thing I think is a bit more understandable. I mean think about it. On their first meeting, she told him she was an FBI agent looking to expose Umbrella. Was quite cagey until they got to the facility, and then he finds out from an Umbrella researcher that she’s a spy working for the highest bidder. She confirms it when she pulls a gun on him. Yes she hesitates, and yes she tells him to look after himself, but she still did all that before. Not to mention the trauma of the night in general on top of that. She again proves duplicitous during the Las Plagas incident where she helps him out, still flirts with him and then steals a sample. We know it never makes it to Wesker, but he doesn’t know that. All he knows is that sample will end up on the black market. I know games are meant to be escapism, but I had to admit, when I thought about it, I kind of facepalmed at Leon’s attachment to someone who switches sides on a whim.
@@BL00DYME55 Remake Claire is less of an issue compared to R3mak3 Jill, whose aggression and dialogue is more befitting an excitable civilian than a reserved and cool-headed professional. 'Trauma' is a weak excuse since not everyone responds to it the same way.
11:35 I wasn't all too entirely on board with this until this point. 100% agreed. It's actually pretty out of character for Jill to not be in uniform. The whole point of that costume design was meant to constantly underline just how vulnerable and out of her element she was. I don't like it returning because of the suggestion that she came out of her experiences in 5 completely unchanged.
Well, we don't know the circumstances of the movie yet. I can't speak on why the clothes are identical to her RE3R design, but maybe she's a late addition to the plot and is literally pulled into the plot last second while she's off doing something casual without a real chance to gear up. Or maybe it is something as lame as promotional consistency. Lol
@@zeropolicy7456Honestly, Capcom did do stupid stuff before, evidence being how they handled Resident Evil in the 2010's. So, your theory isn't really that fsr fetched lol.
Funny thing about original Jill is that she absolutely could kick your ass, which is why I assumed she was so kind, in a world like resident evil you had to able to afford to be kind. She could defend herself and others, she was kind because she was always prepared for things to take a turn for the worse but never wanted them to
That’s the exact vibe that I got from watching and playing those games. She was the nice friend. She could most definitely kick someone’s ass but didn’t want to. She’d rather diffuse the situation before it blew up. She had a good head on her shoulders and had the tactical skills to help her if she was backed into a corner.
All the female chars in the resident evil used to have more of a warm vibe to them, they kept it with Claire mostly in RE2 remake, Jill and Ada had it. Re6 was Peak Ada and I'm worried they'll erase all of her female James Bond persona in any DLC or future campaign missions. Jill is just a mystery but it also makes me wonder what they will do with Sherry Birkin as well.
In some ways, the warm vibe gives away that they are made by Japanese developers. It's known they give their female characters similar aspects. Whether in support or to the detriment of the characters. Ada having warm eyes is a nice distraction to her real nature of this callous spy with unknown business connections. Hers is a ruse and to shed that in RE4 Remake makes sense to no longer be this warm person. Leon already knows her game, but has leftover unrequited feelings for her. Jill originally was intended to be half Japanese before she was elected to be fully western. Her backstory was one of intense merit and work, being the first woman to overcome various military groups that got her into STARS. Once she actually engages the horrors of Umbrella and been betrayed; it's easy to see that she adopts a very callous personality and untrusting stance to people that isn't well known to her. I would prefer if she cared about others more, and didn't cuss like a sailor. But I do appreciate her hardened development. Claire is the only character who I really want to retain the motherly / caretaker image. She went above and beyond to save a child from Raccoon City, and in many of the other appearances usually has her protecting someone else. She's a natural at it, and she ought to retain this higher empathy for other people. While also gaining confidence to overcome obstacles and get to the truth.
@Polomance862 Yeah, tho I would like to add that old jill could've had the same thing as well especially since I think her older backstory she was basically a street kid, but with old jill she had badass yet compassionate and sort of vulnerable stance in her that I feel like could be translated well in the modern Era, especially since and I heard this from other ppl she has a tuff time being around chris or other ppl for the beginning of the film which imo if true I feel like despite what jill went through I also feel as if everyone else went through a lot and I feel like both chris and jill could relate to each other in some way and I think with that type of trauma especially after 6 years it could bring ppl together, but i do know she warms up later in the movie but idk it does feel weird of her giving even her close freinds and family the cold shoulder
I'm truly baffled about how capcom treats Jills character and her appearances... I mean... they could've ATLEAST give her some minor scarring on her chest😐
@@ShikiRyougi05 When she was doped up, she was running up walls like Spider-Man and it took two fully grown adults to take her down, one of them was roided out the gills. Also, these viruses are created to make weapons and supersoldiers. Advanced healing really isn't that far fetched.
I agree with all your points here and I'd like to bring up another: how Jill being infected back in 3 supposedly stopped her aging. It's such bs. She aged in 5 and Revelations. But god forbid she ages after all her new marketing.
They could have pulled this off if her look "froze" at RE5. They could have made an "aged up to RE5" version of the remake design... But instead just lazily drop R3Make's design. Down to the clothes. Even Claire changes clothes more, sure she always wear some red, pink, or redish brown, but it ain't the same style of jacket/torso wear every darn time.
im pree sure in RE3 remake Jill literally says (in the sewer fights) that she needs to burn her clothes after the mission, so the fact that she had the same clothes is funny to me
I wholeheartedly agree. To take it further I actually personally don't like how they are trying to make these characters SEEM tougher by making them more harsh and foul mouthed. I don't have anything against cursing, but to do it so much gives them a false bravado in my opinion. Old Jill was still strong and capable of handling the odds, but like you said had a gentle, warm side to her. It's because of her caring nature that she would put herself in these situations to do what she deemed right by fighting against the corrupt corporations such as umbrella. That is strength.
To me, OG Jill saying "You want STARS? I'll give you STARS" gives me the same satisfaction as hearing Ripley's "Get Away From Her, You Bitch!". Both are equally badass women with motherly side on them. Also, if OG Jill would ever curses, that one Ripley quote won't be out of place for her character since it's not driven by urge to kill (okay, that may play a part too), but mainly by desire to *protect*. (Hopefully YT don't double post this since I failed to sent reply the 1st time)
@Raydhen And to add to what you say there Raydhen, when Ripley does finally say "you bitch" it's impactful because Ripley hasn't been dropping f bombs and other curses left and right. If she was saying that kind of stuff all the time, then when she does say that line, one would think "well that's just Ripley cursing out an enemy like she always does." But instead you can hear the intensity and the fact that she is fed up in dealing with the aliens as well as the fact that she won't tolerate the queen getting near Newt. When you do finally hear Ripley speak like that it stands out and makes you go "Whoa, she means business now". There need to be moments that are picked for those instances to have a bigger impact. Not just throw foul language all over the place, because then it becomes diluted and annoying.
Exactly cursing enemies is just a really cheap way of making someone seem strong. RE4 Leon was a complete badass and he didn’t curse once at an enemy in the entire game. Instead seeing him playfully trash talking his opponents after taking down everything they threw at him was incredible and established his character much better.
She is completely different in every game, but I think 5 Jill is by far best Jill. But Death Island just takes a huge dump on her, instead of taking the chance to show Jill older and physically scarred as a visual indicator of the trauma she went through in 5, they lazily reuse her age 23 RE3 model and undermine it all. What a waste, but typical Capcom.
@@gogetathestrongestfusion dude she got the original intended effects of the T virus longer life span and eternal youth the cure didn't kill the virus it just made it so she wouldn't turn into a zombie what jill got is what spencer wanted
Watching Chris call Jill - literally - reckless and lecturing her was one of the most insulting things Capcom has ever done. Jill was supposed to have more emotional intelligence than all of the STARS since she was a bomb disposal, being calm and emotionally intelligent were pre-requisites of her job. Especially compared to Chris who used to be a insubordinate badboy in his youth. It was a major role reversal that make no sense at all. Jill's trauma wasn't about not saving enough people, she always did it to the extent possible. But rather not having control over her own actions and hurting innocent people. Her behavior in the movie is just unjustified and an insulting attempt of capcom to welcome newcomer RE3 remake fans. Absolutely nothing more than that. I go beyond that. Capcom seems to use the same ready-made tamplate for all female characters from REV2 onwards. Same one-sided tough woman thing. Just change the name and sometimes the outfit, just like the less talented western hollywood writers do. For these and other reasons, I always thought Japanese writers were more talented with women. But clearly something has changed in capcom's office. Tha sadly part is to see fans desperate to defend the company new code of conduct just to ensure the next product's existence, even if it means their complete lack of conection with the previous one or dignity.
If only shinji still handled RE. Shinji mikami always handled his female characters meticulously. I remember when he said he regrets creating rebecca for the reasons she's always seem like a damsel in distress. Their modern idea of strong female leads are thise who cuss like what they did to claire and jill, i think they really did great with re2 remake ada, she was more balance also in re4, her model is just drop dead gorgeous but the voice ruins it for me.
Yeah man totally agreed. I honestly was sad when a couple years ago Capcom made a statement where they basically implied they were going to take the same steps as western developers (you know, politics, culture, stereotypes all that shit), so i guess that´s why they wanted to change Jill. The critical drinker made a good video analizing the female character in modern videogames, you should check it out. Jill ain´t the only one going through this change.
Good to see someone made a video on this. Leon honestly changed a lot too but it’s a lot more subtle because they stuck to his core flaw stronger, that being a naive rookie cop. What changed though is the character beats he goes through in his storyline and the development that comes therein. Original Leon insisted on helping cooperating with and protecting Ada, which broke through her steely spy nature and caused her to second guess her motives. This isn’t just enforced through dialogue but also actions and even gameplay like when you can examine Ada’s gun in the A scenario and find it has no bullets left - so she was bluffing when she tried to take the G sample from Leon. This informs us that Leon’s good nature won out on her in the end, and the only way she was going to get that sample was if Leon was a weaker man than she knew him to be. By contrast remake Leon is a lot less noble. He means well and wants to do his best but he’s a lot more narrow minded and manipulated. He does help Ada but it’s a lot less impactful on the both of them, and his dedication to her is one driven by authority and vengeance because he buys into Ada’s lie about her being FBI wanting to crack down on Umbrella. As a result Leon in the remakes is just a much less noble minded and idealistic guy. He and his original self sort of represent two ways that someone with naive idealistic perspectives of justice can go: they either do their best to live up to the ideals despite the problems of reality, or they become disillusioned by them.
@@ThrillingDuck I finally got around to playing RE2make last year and while I loved the gameplay the writing felt off to me; I went and replayed the PS1 game soon after and it really clicked why haha.
I agree with your thoughts 100% my main problem is that in Death Island she should be about 40 but she looks exactly how she looks when she was 23 in 1998? They said its because she was infected but why cant we have hot mum Jill? I almost think it's almost lazy to use the model that they had for her in RE3 Remake
i think it makes sense because T-Virus had a really huge regenerative properties and it remains in Jill's body. Also she was infected with Uroboros that also a T-Virus based virus. Sherry Birking that have been experimented with the G-Virus had also stopped aging because of it's regenerative properties.
D.c Douglas was supposed to return as wesker but about 2 years ago he broke nda by leaking early concept art of wesker(re4make version but with a burnt arm) so that probably got him fired among his other allegations Damn shame his wesker voice is so iconic😢
Not exactly someone made an account posing as DC Douglas and leaked those images in response to the allegations to ensure he got fired so he wouldn't be in RE4:RE. The hate for him was real so people ran with it anyway despite two major issues. 1. Why would he DM some random person then request them NOT to share the leak and risk his contract IF he was afraid of getting sued ? 2. None of the older VAs have been rehired for the remakes he wouldn't have been In RE4:RE anyway.
@@yohan4027 That's what I was thinking but probably because the DBD actor was busy with other work. Or maybe they wanted a different tone with Wesker with his new voice. I mean, Wesker has inconsistent voices throughout the series. First, he sounded British, then 5, he sounded more American.
I too saw the remakes as their own universe, so this is very strange, marketing or not. I love how Jill grew in RE5 and it just left me wanting more of her, but we never got it and probably never will. Capcom does a terrible job when it comes to consistency. Why would you change a character's face all the time? Most games tend to keep a similar structure. Resident evil is a love/hate universe to me.
I echo your thoughts on RE5 Jill verbatim. I loved that portrayal and it just left me wanting more of her. I'm still so ticked off that she was just completely absent from RE6, which seemed to be going for this Avengers/"Everyone is Here" vibe, but just replaced Jill and Claire with one-offs Piers and Helena. And then of course Chris was the only legacy character to exist in 7 and 8 lol.

I was genuinely shocked when I saw the trailer for the new movie. The fact that it looks like they just ripped her model from RE3make and made absolutely no effort to make her look like she's aged, or reflect any of the changes she went through in the 20ish years since RE3 is honestly kind of ridiculous. I wish they had given her some scarring on her chest, where the device Wesker used to mind control her was, and maybe show her using hair dye to cover up her blonde hair. Maybe even make her clothing choices directly attempting to cover up her scar, just ANY visual reflection of the psychological trauma they are saying she's going though. Also personally, I am just not a fan of the direction or the portrayal of Jill in RE3make, it just feels like they took her and made her a generic independent character type. I'm sure the Voice Actress is fine, it really is just the script and the direction I had a problem with, she just seems so mean and pissed off for most of the game.
Dude, this video is my mental salvation. I thought I was crazy because I was thinking and saying all this things about the characters in remakes that I didn't like and people just calls me a clown because of the "these remakes are perfect shut up you idiot". Thank you man ❤️
The remake Jill is better written imo. The issue is that their was a change in the writing, which puts people off. It's a valid point, especially when we have been playing these games for decades. It will always be an issue. Write better characters vs. writing a faithful one.
@@yellowball597 i personally don't like her but that's just personal opinions, I get why people like her and that's fine. I got so hurt from RE4 remake because I didn't like it AT ALL. Characters are just not them. It's boring and it misses what made RE4 great for me.
I could not agree more about some of the characters in these remakes. Jill especially. It's like the difference between Ripley from Aliens and Sarah Conner from Terminator. Both James Cameron action movies, both total badasses, but they are very different. Ripley is warm and kind to those she loves and hella distrustful to most other people, and for good reason. Sarah Conner, on the other hand, is all about the mission. She's a terrible mother and a total warrior, and after all her experiences, who can blame her? Both very well done characters, but totally different. That's how Jill is to me. As far as RE4R, I agree as well, with the exception being Ashley. I don't mind changing a character if it's an overall net improvement, and she absolutely is. While Luis is technically in the same boat, it comes at a cost, that being Ada. Luis's presence being beefed up is great, until you realize he is just vampiring so much of her screen time and even a key scene or two. I would rather have Ada than Luis, personally, as I adored flirty Ada. New Ada is so dry that her attempts to flirt come off as genuine insults. Also doesn't help that she's been literally reduced to a non-entity in this version, but hopefully her campaign will fix that. But Ada, Saddler, and Krauser have been done so damn dirty it makes me want to scream, and I absolutely do not understand the choices with them, it's outright baffling. Also... I just miss Julia Voth. This new face for Jill is cute, but Julia Voth IS Jill. She has been since 2002, 20 freaking years. That's like replacing Luke Skywalkers face, and not to open THAT can of worms, but at least Disney tries to keep Luke's face consistent with Mark Hamil. Capcom has been so hit or miss lately, and the new fanboys just go crazy when you point out the chips in their perfect veneer. Or rant for way too long, like me.
My biggest gripe is Capcom's refusal to age their women protagonists. At least with remake Claire they have room to grow, but in general, Jill, Claire, and Rebecca don't look any older than their original appearances despite this movie taking place 20ish years later. They should all be in their 40s. Just let them age darnit. And don't give me that "their aging got affected when they were infected" bologna. At least Chris and Leon have slightly aged with time.
You hit the nail on the head. This is Street Fighter Capcom mind you, who has no issue making Ryu and older male while the female characters stay pretty much the same for the fanservice lol. Not that I hate fanservice mind you! But not aging the characters after years and years and actually aging the male characters seems crazy to me.
@@mickidoesmedia exactly. Some thinner faces/ sharper bone structure. Duller hair. Even just more mature wardrobe. Is it so much to ask that the character design evolve to show the age and experience of the character? I think Village Chris is the best example of that kind of aging and character growth. Whether you're a fan of the design or not, it at least shows some kind of change.
Lol that's the first thing that I noticed while watching Dead Island. Unlike the RE remakes, this movie is set in 2015, but all the women still look identical (age-wise) to how they looked in 1998 lol. Capcom are probably afraid some of the younger/immature fans would kick up a fuss about their "waifus" having a few wrinkles. Other than that, I honestly don't have a problem with the updated versions of the characters, if Capcom want to replace old versions of characters with their updated counterparts in all RE media from now on, that's fine by me. But at least make it consistent. The decision to mix old Leon (Matt Mercer) with new Jill (Nicole Tompkins), makes absolutely no sense, other than 100% fan service. And even more baffling thing is that they used the new Leon (Nick Apostolides) in the last RE animation, Infinite Darkness. Why not bring him back, to have some consistency?
The original Jill Valentine reminds me of Sarah Connor from the Terminator series. In fact, in the RE1 Remake she has Sarah Connors combat fatigues as a unlockable outfit. The new remake Jill just reminds me of some actor playing Jill. I really don't get why the changed Claire and Jill's faces so much when they were already unique and established. They could have just make them a bit more realistic looking and called it a day.
Completely agree! Different doesn't necessarily mean 'bad' but when you make huge changes to core characters in remakes and then try and establish ALL of the games as cannon, you will run into big problems. Changing Ada and Jill is no problem if they're just limited to one remake... It can actually work better as a matter of fact! (Take Ashley in the RE4 remake for example) but it's obvious these new characters are now being treated as the default (probably for marketing) and it's damaging to how the originals were intended to be written.
You put everything I've felt about jill over the years into one video perfectly. I don't mind new jill but god damn I miss the jill I grew up with and patiently waited to return for YEARS.
Her characterization in RE5 was peak Jill for me, and I'm still so disappointed that that iteration of her never really got to return later in the timeline.
@ThrillingDuck yeah their personalities being different is definitely what threw me off at first I just couldn't put it into words. They're both still badass female leads but I prefer her original more calm demeanor. It kind of reminds me of how FFXV scrapped Stella for Luna.
I miss the original Ada, especially the voice actress... I personally don't feel the current VA understood who the character was. And maybe as over the top as the original outfit was, it was a character statement. It didn't have to serve function, and that's what made it so Ada. The current costume design though... serves neither function nor character, because if you've ever worn a sweater dress (especially a short one like hers) you'd know that thing would not stay below your waist in action! There's a bit too much "overhaul" in their redesigns to modernize and invent something new but without actually improving it, in most cases. Claire's outfit also being an example. It's like they're thinking "what would every day people be wearing in a zombie apocalypse?" while forgetting these characters are not supposed to be every day people... I definitely swapped to the OG dress for my 2nd Separate Ways play through! lol
This is a strange analogy, but I consider the remakes of RE2-4 like the remakes of Disney movies: the original is the "canon characterizion" that will always be referenced and marketed at the end of the day. When you go to the Disney theme parks to meet the characters, you expect to see the original cartoon version, not the live action remake one. The Jill (double timeline) situation is akin to effectively overwriting the original characterization and in a way alienating those who fell in love with that character. It's a weird situation when it comes to remakes and adapted media. It would be like if Nintendo started using the Mario movie Peach in their games instead of the same Peach they've been using for the past 20 years.
I still play Resident Evil 5, and I love that version of Jill more than any of the others. She's a strong, kind, caring, compassionate, feminine, warm woman whose very presence is calming. Also.... She was powerful and could kill you. I haven't played the new games. But from what I've seen. New Jill is VERY westernized. Loud, mean, foul-mouthed, masculine, toxic, crude, no compassion or empathy, just an overall insufferable character. There's something very attractive about a strong, powerful, but feminine and warm woman. And there's something equally repelling about a swing-d*ck feminist
I just wanna say that I feel so lucky and blessed to grow up and play RE as a kid with Alyson Court, Sally Cahill, Catherine Disher and Julia Voth as the women who would voice and be the likeness of the Fictional Characters I look up to in life. The RE games that involve said women would always be peak RE to me. And I wish the same sentiment for the younger generation who would grow up and resonate with their Remake/Reimagined counterparts
It’s difficult. Because much of these original characters were made by a Japanese interpretation, unlike the new ones. Furthermore, it’s capcom’s cowardice to move on from their original characters to new ones. Piers Nivans was meant to replace Chris, but unfortunately they chickened out. The more you keep reusing your established characters, the more upset your audience will be when you butcher them down the timeline.
hope so but i dont think its going to be that way for a nyc phone book list of reasons. played them all - own them all and they just lack the draw that made the games they are based on so great.
it’s just, if they’re gonna change her design- why not change all of them and not just a single character? makes her stick out even more, especially since game-wise they’ve been using the new models/faces ever since the remakes started coming out. that being said, what’s made the remakes more palatable is just realising that they’re REMAKES and treating them as their own seperate thing. z
I always admired Jill’s (Julia Voths) look. Jill was never the stereotypical badass trope. Even in RE5 (still Voth) was brainwashed and had abilities. Later on she reverts to the old self which is good. Now RE3 Remakes Jill never liked her . Felt too forced with the trash talk and the badass female trope. And with Death Island I wasn’t thrilled to see again the same RE3Remake Jill. Was looking forward to seeing atleast her revelations version.
I think Capcom isn't just changing personalities, it's changing character relationships. I wait 14 years to see Jill and Chris work, and now, Jill is going to work with Leon?
@@Desativado123r CHRIS: FUCK!!! Le-on you were supposed to continue the Redfield lineage with Claire, why are you stealing Jill from me now? I'm gonna give ya the Boulder treatment now
@@tgabz Yeah so? And you liked her when she's the typical stereotype of a 'badass female trope'. While the earlier versions appeared bland she appeared a lot more vulnerable, added more realism to her personality, and more down to earth. Especially when thrown into such horrific circumstances. She hardened in the later games, with RE5 where she was a lot more confident, and versatile yet still had the vulnerability without spewing swear words every now and then.
Finally someone on UA-cam brings up the problems with Jill, and some of the other resident evil characters that I've talking about ever since the remake of part 2 came out.
I completely agree with your take entirely. I literally jumped when you said some points because it’s exactly what I thought. A lot of the RE charm was kinda evaporated as they improved on its realism and more grounded story in the remakes imo. that point about Jill’s outfit in the remake was so relatable. It made no sense for them to change it. Then follow up and bring it back for death island. At least give her a new hair cut or something lmao.
Tbf maybe they say its part of her trauma in a way that she is stuck at that moment in her life both phisically thx to the T virus giving her a longer life span and eternal youth , and mentally deciding to wear clothes and style in general similar to how she was in racoon
@@agssilv5919 they could but it wouldn’t explain revelations well. plus we wouldn’t really understand her progression. Like the guy said she feels the exact same as her 3make counter part. but if that’s a route they would want to go? I’d be disappointed but fine with it.
Totally agree, OG Jill has always been my favourite version I like Jill to be tactical so Lost in Shadows and Revelations are decent designs too. I hate that they just went generic current year Hollywood with her design and personality in 3make and lost all of her big sister energy.
I sincerely agree with every point you made. I personally don't like the idea of mixing both the original and remake characters together like they seemed to do in Death Island. My fear is that they're completely gonna scrach the original games and their plot and character development and replace them with the remake and make it the new "canon". Also they explained that Jill still looks young because the experiments Wesker did made her age very slow apparently, but to me that doesn't explain why she looks completely like in RE3 Remake and even got the old haird and clothes back. 😂
Capcom will be shooting themselves on their foot, if they tried that, they rectified things with the start of RE7 and yet they want to bring in again the silly mainstream storyline of the previous games
They got new Claire and new Jill mixed up. Jill was supposed to maintain the softer and less harsh attributes and Claire was supposed to have the more defensive and guarded traits.
I mean even in the older games claire I don't Necessarily get the traits of her acting like that only really in cv and that's it ya know, and in movies like damnation which is technically old claire she has clear traits of loving mother like compassion in that claire which transfers over to her new traits so overall I feel like claire I sort of the same it's jill who had a more noticeable change
@@TiredAslbecause jill has been traumatized alot...she has gone through alot with her life with the peak of getting brainwashed and hurting alot of innocent people
Every time I think of R3make Jill I can never not imagine her taunting Nemesis then getting punched in the back of the head. That happened to so many people at that part that I’m nearly convinced it’s canon
I don't like how a lot of RE fans base RE on RE2. whenever they hear and see RE, Leon's name pops up. RE has many main characters with each one having a storyline intertwined with each other. I agree with the video you made! It shows how character personalities can drastically change even if they look the same. Well they shouldn't look the same aging is a thing
The "new Jill" as you mentioned also felt like a completely different character to me as well. In a way, this "new Jill" reminded me of the Jill from the horrible Jovovich RE movies. That's why I couldn't get into RE3 Remake. I got heat from some so called RE fans upon mentioning this. These "fans" claimed Jill was always like this. Showed how much they knew about the original Jill.
Original Jill always seemed thoughtful, cool and collected, even when scared. Color theory wise, she's akin to her character color, blue; wise, strong, bold, and beautiful like bodies of water. She can become a bit stormy when she's angry, like at Barry when he betrayed her but she's not one for emotional outbursts or cursing someone out or throwing insults around unless you're as evil as Wesker. RE5 is the only case where I see her have angry and intense facial expressions and that's because she's forced against her will to fight her BFF. I think they want a 'spicy' character for the audience to experience, to get further immersed in the story, and also since deep characterization is 'in' on the market. Before, the focus was on gameplay and was player-centric so you got more quiet characters like OG Jill for the players to run around as. I also like it because then you can project your own ideas onto the character since we all come from different places, have different experiences, and will connect to characters in different ways. With talkative characters they basically show you, or tell you, how you're supposed to feel about a situation. (It makes me feel less scared because in a video game because I don't feel alone in the nightmare and am getting validation for what I think is happening.)
You summarized Jills character in like just a couple of sentences maybe that shows there might be an issue. The male characters are several times more deep than the female characters.
Yes, I concur, but the "I think they want a 'spicy' character for the audience to experience, to get further immersed in the story," that's Claire... everyone talking about Jill, but they killed sassy Claire..., meh!
Ill weigh in on this too. older Jill appearances were more or less cut from the same cloth, you knew what you were getting and knew what to expect. it wasnt until the stunning and brave latest design where the trouble started for her. Re 5 space ninja Jill was different but when she regained herself she was that same Jill we knew and was basically her Revelations version before the blond hair dye. The flux for the new Jill is because shes all over the place. In 3 remake she was up down up down like someone who had a drug problem going through withdraw. now from previews of the film shes mellow. As a leading lady of the series she really should have been handled better. If you want a loud bemoaning b*tch in boots casting, just make someone new for the plot.
The whole venture just felt weird, she looked weird, sounded weird, acted weird. this is what happens when games attempt to be edge fests or too srsbsns. you get lines lines that say 'fuck' one time too many coming from the wrong mouths. Made RE6 Chris look like St Peter. we need a hash tag FreeJill
I'm like 99% sure Jill's model was just completely reused from RE3 Remake. the quality of her model looks noticeably higher than the other characters too, its almost uncanny how much more realistic she looks.
It really makes me sad, I LOVE just how very campy RE was, there was a time where we were allowed to have fun, but now everything has to be broody and serious.
Yeah I'm always going to be a proponent of RE1 Remaster Jill. It's almost as if they swapped some character traits around between Jill and Claire, but also added additional elements, new-Jill being a bit more "bitchy", and new-Claire being a bit more naive and empathetic.
Actually I agree with your points. As much as it makes sense marketing-wise, I've always feared that the remakes would become replacements in the timeline just because they did well, and Death Island kinda confirms my fears, even though everyone else looks like their most recent counterparts.
Unironically. Her design looks closer to Alice and her 'superhuman' traits are emphasized more through her enduring ridiculous amounts of damage without any permanent scarring (even when she's supposedly 'uninfected' for most of the remake). Main difference is that Alice is stoic to the point of being boring while R3mak3 Jill veers into the opposite problem of being too excitable and aggressive.
It seems that there’s currently a trend to make all characters serious, edgy and depressed for some reason, specially for female characters, it feels like people (for some reason) see kind women (like OG Jill) as weak or something, sad.
@Al Swedgen YES! It's pretty obvious that Capcom is catering towards Western audience and their idea of a "Strong woman". A terrible idea in which audience around the world seem to be getting tired of at this point, I may add
Did you have this take with RE5-6 Chris by chance? He also went through trauma and turned to drinking as a way to cope. It wouldn't make sense if Jill didn't do the same. Unless you want a Mary Sue... So no thanks. People seem to be seeing her strictly as a female protagonist and not a female protagonist who went through unbelievable horror. It's sensible she would be affected and have mental scars, as literally any human would.
@@ShadowOfRahl ah? Who the hell is talking about a Mary Sue? Do you know what that is? What I and people in general want is something that makes MC’s different, we already know Chris is boring, alcoholic, soldier guy, why does everyone need to act the same? If that is what you want what is even the point of having different MC’s if they’re all going to have the same boring personality that you seem to enjoy and identify with?
I feel that they wanted to include Jill at last in something but they just couldn't decide what image to uphold for her. Also, if RE5 remake ever happens, who knows what'll become of her... anyway, great video, I totally agree. Jill was always my fave character and now I'm excited and terrified at the same time.
Remake Jill with remake Jill voice. Classic Claire with remake Claire's voice. Classic Leon, Chris and Rebecca with existing voice actors but not remake Leon. It gets confusing which timeline we are supposed to consider canon.
As for Jill's hair color in RE5, I always just interpret it as some kind of "baby blonde" situation(infants having lighter hair, and their hair color darkens as they grow up, Jill supposedly got put into a vet tank for quite a long time which could result in something like that), it always feels like a temporary pseudo albino condition to me, which should be reversible. That being said Death Island Jill should at least get a BSAA uniform of some kind, and a new hair cut.
Yes! I totally felt the same way, I played original Re3 alongside the remake to get a good comparison and they feel like completely different characters. Imo original Jill was sweet and effortlessly badass while new Jill is over the top cringe with her cursing and dialogue.
Jills changes feel the most overt and glaring. Which has always felt weird to me because she's always been a fan favorite. They redo Leon and they keep him mostly intact, they spruce up Chris and Claire and they're different but you can still get their personalities and they stay distinct. The changes they made to Jill, though? It's a different vibe altogether, a full on retcon, I'd say. It makes me wonder what was happening behind closed doors that made them take such a drastic left turn with her. OG Jill will be missed.
Resident Evil CG films are in the same universe as in the mainline story. The RE Engine series of games should be in their own timeline, even if they tried so hard and failed badly of retconning Spencer and Miranda's relationship
Didnt a seperate studio remake re3? It was still managed under capcop but I think thats why it’s not very faithful at all and why Jill feels like another person
@@Xandermcg479 it doesnt matter as the studio (who mostly are all canned looking for employment) had the full endorsement of Capcom for this mess. it also follows very close to their leaked documents that went up the other year. they wanted brick face overly tough female leads fully covered in unisex clothing if memory serves. there still up online, take a search. Worth a read.
This is a fair point. Jill has probably the most changes to her character in jumping from original timeline to remake timeline, and it is really jarring that she looks like her RE3R character than a post RE5 version, when Death Island is set.
I compleeeeeeeeeetely agree as an ULTRA HARDCORE RE FAN. The characters are not the same, Jill was supposed to be blonde hair because of the experiments done to her, and Wesker his VOOOICE CHAAANGED. THIS IS SOOOOOO UNFORGIVING!!
So happy to see others share the same opinion as me on Jill she's such an important character in this series and it's a shame to see them butcher her like they have. They've thrown away every likeable trait she had (imo) and turned her into a foul-mouthed marketing device. This ain't my Jill.
Same thing they did to Lara Croft. They took away the charm, wit, and effeminate characteristics to make them more savvy action heroes. When it’s the characteristics that made their actions unique, like Lara trying to persuade other treasure hunters instead of straight up antagonizing them equally.
@@TheRealAdaWong yeah, you hate to see it honestly and it's something I've noticed quite a lot recently too. Female characters can't be feminine in any way because apparently that makes them less of a realistic heroine? Seems like pretty backwards logic if u ask me. But oh well we just have to deal with it.
maybe I'm coping but I do believe it's just a fail like re7 chris and they will fix that in the futur after seeing the feedback, somehow glad the fail happened in a movie and not a main game.
@@kamina4750 yeah I'm in the same boat as you with the copium lol but I'm also hoping that they fix her if they do decide to remake 5 or feature her in a new game 🙏✨

And anyone who disagrees gets mobbed.
without attempting to starting a flame war from those that care and those livelihood pretends on caring:: They arent the same. Jill was never a bombastic character but was a monotone 90s horror film protagonist turned detective then Trinity from The Matrix. The hyper modernization of Jill for whatever purpose just as, if not more unrealistic as the story its set in. From her appearance, oddly masculine facial features, social interaction, voiced lines, and dialog: its a off rails experience. .. fans just dont understand how or why shes so damn aggressive toward everything when other characters in the story universe have gone through much worse. And this was only her second main line entry in 3? we dont even have modern characters in cinema that acts this way.. its toxic.
I really disliked her interactions with Carlos in the remake. Dude was being cordial and she always had some "girlboss" sassy response to him (even after helping her multiple times) like the writers wanted to prove she's just as tough as the guys. It was off putting.
@@SolidSnake240 you completely misunderstand. Carlos wasn't just being cordial, though I love him, he was down BAD. Rightfully so I would be too, but she was literally talking to him about something serious and he's over there calling her a tall drink of water. Now truly is not the time though I did laugh, realistically, it was not the time. And she was only rude because he was umbrella. Once she got to know him she literally apologized and was MUCH sweeter after that. She flirts back with him before going on the train, locking eyes as she left, she was clearly worried when he said he was staying, in her dream even though he was infected and about to kill her she still couldn't bring herself to shoot him, she was worried when she woke up and heard he went after Nicholai alone, she immediately ran to his side when she saw him unconscious on the floor, she was even reluctant to shoot Nicholai because the bullet would pass through and hit Carlos. Her standoffishness was ENTIRELY because he worked for Umbrella, so she assumed he was as bad as they were. Carlos all but says this himself when he realises what Umbrella did. Once she realised he wasn't like that, she was very sweet to him. You're acting like she was cussing him out the whole game, she gave him one eff you for inappropriate flirting, a couple of "I'm not your friend" type responses but immediately softened when she figured out his deal. Literally stop
@@LangkeeLongkee I'm not "acting" like anything. Just stating what I picked up from their early interactions. You're so pressed you wrote a whole dissertation 😂. I stand by what I said and who tf says "literally stop" lol
@@SolidSnake240 you didn't specify early interactions, you said interactions which implies all of them. And those early ones have a canon reason for being snarky, not the bs "girlboss" thing you just made up. You filled in your own information and came to an incorrect conclusion, literally because canon expressly states why that was the case and you just made something up. I'm not pressed because I described why you're wrong in detail. People who talk about female characters negatively and use terminology like "girl boss" as an insult typically are the butthurt ones, hate to break it to you. And I say literally stop. I just said it.
Personally, I like to think of the Remakes as a separate timeline of sorts. Events may have played out more or less the same, but the effects those events had on the characters is clearly different. For example, Remake Leon was clearly more traumatized by the Racoon City incident compared to Original Leon. I think we can see a bit of this sort of change in Jill at the very beginning of 3 Remake. Her experience at The Mansion is something that she had a hard time dealing with. She still has nightmares about what she saw. She's downright paranoid in regards to Umbrella. She may be very different than Original Jill, but I think those differences are justified well in the storytelling. Granted, I haven't watched any of the CG movies, so maybe I don't know enough to know what I'm talking about.
Thank you for highlighting this, it needed to be said. I think most RE fans will agree that the remake Jill interpretation is vastly inferior to the classic. She exhibits none of the traits which made classic Jill so beloved by the fans. I don't like to be critical, but even her face model has too many harsh features which look nothing like the Jill we all know. I really think Capcom are making a big mistake deviating too far from the original characters.
@@Shevtress She is vastly inferior. She's ugly with a generic design and now a boss bitch. Jill was never any of those things until her character was butchered in 3make.
I've never seen anyone have a hottest, more accurate take on this. You hit the nail in the head with this one. I'm just as angry and disappointed as you are.
I am so glad that other fans feel the same way. I somehow kept running into fake fans who dismiss Capcom's mistakes. I remember I reserved RE3 Remake because it was my favorite of the classic games, and when it came out, it had a live action intro (for some reason) and completely cut the park and the clocktower as well as a few other locations. I was mad, but then people kept saying "No, it's a great game!" A great game does not mean a great or faithful remake. And yes, these remakes can not replace the original games, as they're not the same characterizations or have the same amount of details. It honestly feels like Capcom's 10 year plan is to entirely rebooting the RE series, BUT, as you said, they're not acknowledging that they're rebooting. They switch back and forth in designs. Why have remake Jill, but old Claire? Hulk Chris, but in RE 7 Chris was skinny again (and redesigned)? RE6 Leon (who has aged), but neither Rebecca nor Jill have aged even though this new movie takes place in 2020's, and the original games are set in the 90's. So Jill doesn't age anymore because of a mix of the G-Virus vaccine and Wesker's experiments? If so, say that! It really feels like Capcom doesn't care about continuity anymore. They're streamlining the series with these reboots and cutting out any previous lore or characterization that gave the previous iteration an edge. All of this is leading up to an eventual reboot of RE6, and I think that may be their goal.
That's pretty normal at Capcom look at DMC5 Dante and Vergil aged like crap but Trish looks younger than ever, one can say it's because she a full demon and they are half demons (although as half demons they should age slower not as slow as her but still) but then you have Lady that also looks like aging stopped for her as well and she's full human. Even if Jill stopped aging she should at the very least look like her Lost in Nightmares/ Revelations 1 self not her RE3 self. Also Dead Island will take place in 2015 not in the 2020s still doesn't excuse Jill looking like she's stuck in 98 clothes and all. The problem is that the people in Capcom act like children going full on enthusiasm and zero on organization, one would expect that they have learned from RE1.5 an RE3.5 but the RE3R and RE4R situation with the team working on both and this shows that they clearly didn't. Just look at the Umbrella storyline they did a massive build it up to this final stand against Umbrella only for at the start of RE4 "stocks killed umbrella" now let's move to new idea that we had because we are sick of zombies (even if RE4 is one of the best games ever this is one of his weakest points) and no UC is not even a remotely decent ending to the Umbrella storyline.
@@ThrillingDuck then ideologues. Because no person is going to call mediocrity, a masterpiece. If you want to call viewing these remakes as better tonally, then you’re making the argument that resident evil is on par with the last of us…which it shouldn’t be! Resident evil didn’t get popular by copying the modern American culture, it was popular because the Japanese wanted to write their interpretation of American culture into a zombie horror game. That’s what grabbed people in, especially Americans. The only problem was the many instances where Americans saw how silly and over the top it was, but it made sense when a foreigner is going off of mostly stereotypes they perceive to be cool when it’s about America. Which solidified its campy nature, but the problem was if Japanese wanted this to happen, or were actually looking for something serious. Overall, when you simply just slap their remakes with only a full paint of American interpretation, it loses its charm, and just becomes your typical Netflix slop. Especially in the characterization department. I just wish corporations stop being cowards and establish new characters to overtake the new ones, but so many corporations are so incompetent as to how they should do it. Ethan failed, because instead of starting off in a more grounded and slow setting/story, he’s essentially some superhuman (that’s strangely faceless, which is another huge factor to his failure), and doesn’t stand out compared to the original cast. But you know who did? Piers Nivans. A character who was meant to replace Chris, and even though he was introduced into a terrible resident evil game, he would be quite accepted in RE lore as replacement for Chris.
I agree with your points and everything, but I will correct you because the lore nerd side of me must, Death Island takes place one year after Vendetta which takes place in 2014 one year after the events of RE6. So Death Island takes place in 2015, sorry if this sounds like I'm doing the whole "Well you're wrong" speech just wanted to correct you in the best way my autistic ass can which is sounding like a robot. Edit: I realize someone already did this, so sorry only thing I disagree is the use of the term "fake fans" not right in my opinion.
@@malbasedvalentine3210 The reason these companies are afraid of replacing old characters is because the fanbase goes ballistic when they try, Capcom has tasted that first hand, remember when Nero and Raiden were introduced in DMC4 and MGS2? Nowadays they are well liked characters but back then... whew, you could taste the hate that people had for these "Whiny pretty boy emos with their shitty romances meant to appeal to titanic fangirls" there's a reason both of their wives are mentioned very briefly in their games but don't show up lol.
Man. I CAN'T believe I'm not alone. For the past 3 years, since day 1 of RE3R (and also for Claire in RE2R) I been saying and thinking the same, but because everyone seemed to toke it personal I just stopped and actually felt isolated and like trash. Like, why I don't like it like the others do? Can't believe I can relate to you in every point: Og Claire, og Jill, Ada's voice direction in the recent RE4R... Wesker's nasal voice (sad to read here that his voice actor's is in legal problems. What a shame). Thank you, man.
even if his last voice actor couldn't be recasted, wesker had a looot of differents voice actors during the different games he appeared on but they pretty much feeled all consistent with the british accent, in the remake well... it's just not albert wesker.
Man, this isn't just for the RE series, its for many series, videogames, movies, etc. that do this stuff where you are attacked for not liking the new.
That's how it is with a lot of different franchises. And it isn't an accident. Someone wants us to feel isolated just to accept the trash placed in front of us. Critique and say no when you truly feel like something isn't right.
@@bossross8270 But the mob usually goes after you like an ass, and heaven forbid you go against a girl who does "art" because they will use that fact to basically indirectly force their opinion on you without out-right admitting it or trying to make it seem like it.

Oh my god, thank you for that rant about Jill not being in uniform in Death Island at the end, even though I am very happy to see Jill in the fourth CGI movie, *why* is she still in her civilian clothing?! She should have a full geared up uniform.
Wow, how did i not notice this sooner?! Jill is my fav RE/Bio char, but only as i watched this video am i able to identify a feeling I was having subconsciously while playing RER3: Jill being a much more abrasive western female action hero type compared to the more gentle, compassionate type who is juxtaposed by baddass military training. The stuff Jill was saying to Carlos when she first met him, or even the things she said to enemies, she would have never said as Origin Jill (and of course she literally didn't in the originals). Her personality was so dramatically changed, that she really seems like Jill Valentine almost in name only. On another note, I am also a fan of RE5. The characters in that game were awesome!
and then there was jill slapping carlos at some points on the original, in new jill defense she harshly talk to carlos at first because she knew carlos is under umbrella company and do you think she would talk calmly after knowing that?? she literally apologized to carlos and felt guilty for being harsh with him at their first met..if that wasn't a gentle action idk what it is
I NEED this video to blow up and circulate through the algorithm. The past couple of weeks I've been buffering the idea of the remake games after 1 are just a different timeline. In a sense it's speaks to the good effort of the developers for original games, but yeah, the inconsistency is a little jarring. There are good qualities to both variants of the characters mentioned. It would be amazing if they could just harmonize those qualities moving forward because of writing level, these already well loved characters would only be more awesome with PROPERLY added layers to their personality, but they flip flop so frequently because of the different mediums they present them to us through that it feels like a coin flip between giving fans some mental peace or absolutely shitting the bed the way they botched remaking 3. I want to say that we should be grateful we even get to see characters like Jill/Rebecca (hell even Barry) at all, but we caused QUITE a stir after what they did to Chris in 7, it's a much taller order but I think it's reasonable to push more consistency when it comes to these characters presentation; a man can dream.
What's even stranger is that they have New Jill and Claire (Nicole Tompkins and Stephanie Panisello) alongside Prime/Old Chris and Leon (Kevin Dorman and Matthew Mercer). Then again, considering how different-yet-familiar Nick Apostolides made his RE4 portrayal of Leon in comparison to his RE2 portrayal, I have faith that if they decide to keep the new voices for future games they'll be able to iron out the direction kinks and have them sound appropriate (I mean, ID Leon sounds more like RE2 Leon than RE4 Leon, though that did come out before the remake). It does kinda suck that they swapped Leon's Vendetta model for his Infinite Darkness one, and I'll miss Rebecca's Vendetta model as well. Also, I'm surprised that they didn't bring back Jeff Schine to voice older Chris, though since DI takes place in 2015 I guess that can be excused.
yea.. as to say are the old ruff tuff doods you played with and the new weird cast of females who were all recasted. its also noteworthy that the guys have more or less remained consistent.
Yeah I agree, Jill sticks out like a sore thumb in the upcoming CGI movie, the rest of the character is on their pre remake timeline models, only this Jill models came from the remake era
Best 👏 Girl 👏 Jill 👏 Couldn't agree more. I always admired Jill growing up watching my cousin play the original RE3 for all the things you said about the original Jill so I was stooookkkeed when they announced RE3Remake. Bought on pre-sale even amidst the pademic with my broke bum. Started playing and I was like "who the frig is this beeyotch?" After playing that game, gave it away and convinced myself that it was just a nightmare and played all other RE games that I own where she's in it. Thanks, Capcom.
I've thought about this before. A lot of the main points you could make about New vs Old Jill are also points I feel about New vs Old Star Trek. Really weird putting swears, sometimes almost for no reason, in modern Star Trek and taking out the compassion and empathy. I still watch it, but it's a very different flavor.
I assume that's because the writers of the current ST think that's what the ominous "modern audience" wants to see: Picard and Co. swearing like sailors because apparently it's cool and edgy or something. That doesn't match with their OG depictions. I see the exact same thing happened to Jill in the RE3 Remake.
At least the remakes are competently made games for the most part. New Trek is an absolute disgrace and insulting to the fanbase. The fandom has collapsed since STD and Picard. Unfortunately I believe its unrecoverable as a franchise as its run by morons, and I dearly hope Capcom doesn't follow a similar path.
When you brought up that Original Jill had that motherly, gentle, warm tone of voice, i totally agree. I never noticed it before and you are totally right. I get it now, why i like shipping Jill and Chris now. It like seeing mom and dad. 😂 But seeing New Jill in the movies, there wasnt this chemistry between them anymore. And i think thats the sadness i felt when i saw the trailer. And also confusion. Cuz the first time i saw the trailer, i thought oh maybe this movie takes place sometime after RE4 AND RE5. Then i heard about Jill being in Wesker's control and i went.... "What wait?! That doesnt make sense? When did this happen? Where's her braided blonde hair?!" 😂 But anyways, thanks for the vid. This movie is still gonna be hype. This is still exciting for me since it reminds me of RE6's almost all-star casting.
This movie is such a monkey paw wish for me. I've wanted this story to be told with all these RE All-Stars present for so long, but I wanted it in a game with Original Jill, not a movie with this hodgepodge of old and new variants. Still absolutely gonna watch it though lol.
Honestly, all Capcom had to do with Jill’s design in Death Island is just give her a different outfit and/or longer hair(most likely a ponytail because it’s what she’s known for in later games) and that’s it.
Thank you for pointing it out. I love old Jill face and personality. And despise the new version's personality and looks(nothing against the new model though) and they just went on with it like nothing happened.
Goodness you are so right! My friends talk about it all the time. The abuse of characters in this series is incessant. It’s a miracle people even take it seriously!
OG Jill in RE1: Silence of the Lambs RE3 Nemesis Jill: Law and Order RE1 Remake Jill- Revelations Jill: Julia Voth RE3 Remake Jill- Current: UA-cam Guntuber They made her somehow less and less mature and sophisticated a character as soon as 3 Remake dropped, but I really missed her Ripley from Aliens vibe in Nemesis.
I've been feeling the same way, Jill Valentine being my absolute favorite character. I really enjoyed Original Jill, she had a warm and inviting personality while being completely capable. The new version of Jill just feels a lot less.... like Jill to me, feels more like a generic action hero with less dimensions. She feels more like a rip off of Captain Marvel and a lot harder to enjoy and connect with.
I miss the original characters, the remakes completely wiped them out 😭 why tf did they just lift up jills model and drop it in the new movie.. they really didn’t think ppl would recognize or this thing would sell
Very much agree! And i am in a minority of people who disliked RE2 REmake (I tried to like it and enjoy it, i really wanted to) - the lack of a proper A/B scenario, and other missing staples of the game, just left me cold. Haven't played New 4 yet, but it sounds like they've at least kept it closer to the original. Putting RE3 REmake Jill into a movie where everyone else is their original self seems like casting the stunt double by accident..
I am curious about what happened to Jill's appearance. In 5, her hair is blonde and her skin is fairer. This was explained by the developers that the virus that Jill was exposed to altered her at a genetic level causing her appearance to change. This is indeed medically possible however in the latest movie is after Jill was controlled by Wesker, what happened to her blonde hair? And also fully agree, Jill still looks the same. She hasn't aged. Claire i can understand her being more gentle in 2 remake as she is 19. I can definitely see her maturing into a sharper version like in code veronica, which I'm still waiting on a remake of that one cos low key... Fav RE game. ❤
Remake Jill looks gorgeous and all, but yeah something about OG Jill in RE1 and OG RE3 Nemesis made her feel warmer and more compassionate. Same with Ada in OG RE4. Now Remake Claire on the other hand is an absolute cutie pie and I don't know if I find it appropriate to her character or not. She still has some sass in the RE2 Remake but if they do a Code Veronica Remake (which they should) I would love to see her RE2 Remake version grow into the badass babe that we know her as. Kinda like how Leon has grown between RE2 and RE4 (both OGs and Remake versions). Having the characters grow into more mature versions of themselves after facing their first zombie apocalypse is part of how Resident Evil keeps itself going. If that's what Capcom has planned for the series with the Remakes then I'm down for it.

Ignore the hate comments they probably only played the remakes. :/
Great video man it's nice to know that others are in the same boat as me on this + you brought up some really great and valid points good job! And thank you :)
It was weird to me that they use Remake Jill, but modern-ish Leon, Chris, Rebecca, and even a MUCH more classic Claire. What a hodgepodge of design.
They're voiced by the remake characters tho. The cgi movies came out before the remakes did so they had to go with an og design for leon and claire. But for jill? It made sense to go with remake and she's also being voiced by remake jill too. The remakes are cannon now.
@@lordpean And, what, the originals aren't cannon anymore?
@@thesomethingthatisntathing514 They're not the cannon they're following so no. You can't have two games be cannon at the same time.

What’s crazy is that Chris also changes VA’s constantly yet his persona as a character is somewhat consistent.
Idgaf if Chris Isn’t voiced by Rodger Craig smith he’s not Chris to me
honestly there are so many chris voice actors to list through yet they all do him decent enough because chris is just designed as a boy scout who's tough. I think the VA who matters most is Leon as matt mercer raised the bar on how good gruff leon could sound and i haven't noticed anyone match that except detective masterclass
@@rottedminx Yeah. RCS is a legend, he is also young Batman.
@@rottedminxcry about it
What's interesting is that they had the right idea with Chris in RE8: his facial features from re5 were still obviously prevalent, but they transitioned the face into the RE8 engine and made him older and I think it worked perfectly. At this point it's kinda too late to do that with Jill, but it has been done before. So it's kinda weird how inconsistent they are with Jill.
It's unfortunate because I (and I'm sure others) would've loved to see a HD interpretation of the Jill from RE 5 in the new movie.

For little Infinite Darkness did but has the potential to, RE2R to RE Vendetta/Death Island feels like the same character with an arc.

Haven't thought on that, makes sense

I wasn't all too entirely on board with this until this point.
100% agreed. It's actually pretty out of character for Jill to not be in uniform. The whole point of that costume design was meant to constantly underline just how vulnerable and out of her element she was. I don't like it returning because of the suggestion that she came out of her experiences in 5 completely unchanged.
I thought about this too because I'm pretty sure she mentioned during the sewers that she burned those clothes in RE3R

@@zeropolicy7456 Sure, but this time it was Chris punching boulder through her room instead of Garbagesis.

Sherry already had it because of her own previous infection. It's not farfetched that it might apply to Jill too.
Couldn’t have put it better myself :)
@@DeathFanaticdid we play the same game? Leon has cursed in RE4 remake. 🤨
Western countries don't know what to do with women in or out of media. The best they got is, woman = sex object.
Very very well said 👏
Yeah man totally agreed.
Japan writers for women? You mean the big tits and onichan?
Those are all excellent points about Leon! I really need to revisit his older games. You have a keen eye for the character.

i think it makes sense because T-Virus had a really huge regenerative properties and it remains in Jill's body. Also she was infected with Uroboros that also a T-Virus based virus. Sherry Birking that have been experimented with the G-Virus had also stopped aging because of it's regenerative properties.

D.c Douglas was supposed to return as wesker but about 2 years ago he broke nda by leaking early concept art of wesker(re4make version but with a burnt arm) so that probably got him fired among his other allegations
Damn shame his wesker voice is so iconic😢
DBD Wesker could easily take over. They've got a whole new direction for the voice in general in RE4.
@@CenoriaWoah why didn't they use the dbd va?
The best Wesker voice actor was from RE1 on PS1

@@ThrillingDuck they love replacing the main characters with filler characters for some reason I never understood. It would make more sense if they did that with side Resi titles. Funnily enough, it's Jill and Claire that got those side entires.

They literally just amplified the breasts on her R3mak3 model.

The remake Jill is better written imo. The issue is that their was a change in the writing, which puts people off. It's a valid point, especially when we have been playing these games for decades.
It will always be an issue. Write better characters vs. writing a faithful one.
I hate the new Jill. I like the other remake characters but the new Jill is just... not Jill to me.
@@yellowball597 i personally don't like her but that's just personal opinions, I get why people like her and that's fine. I got so hurt from RE4 remake because I didn't like it AT ALL. Characters are just not them. It's boring and it misses what made RE4 great for me.
@@BenDrowned01001 so Luis and Ashley are better in og? Xd especially Ashley who will prefer her in Og over Remake
Some aging lines under their eyes and such would be all you really need to do, too, its not hard VFX
You age gracefully if you take care of yourself. 40 isn't old. However, the main characters are definitely closer to 50 than 40.
Yes! Very concisely put :)
Uh yeah the remakes are now the new canon
I forgot how much different Ashley was.

Totally agree, except I suspect Capcom rly is going to try and full-time replace Original Jill unfortunately :( Would love to be wrong though!
If Capcom want to release the original RE games in modern platforms... 😫

While the earlier versions appeared bland she appeared a lot more vulnerable, added more realism to her personality, and more down to earth. Especially when thrown into such horrific circumstances.

I like Jill to be tactical so Lost in Shadows and Revelations are decent designs too.
Jill was supposed to maintain the softer and less harsh attributes and Claire was supposed to have the more defensive and guarded traits.
if you watch the movie, it's explain why jill acted like that
I mean even in the older games claire I don't Necessarily get the traits of her acting like that only really in cv and that's it ya know, and in movies like damnation which is technically old claire she has clear traits of loving mother like compassion in that claire which transfers over to her new traits so overall I feel like claire I sort of the same it's jill who had a more noticeable change

I think they want a 'spicy' character for the audience to experience, to get further immersed in the story,
and also since deep characterization is 'in' on the market.

I'm like 99% sure Jill's model was just completely reused from RE3 Remake. the quality of her model looks noticeably higher than the other characters too, its almost uncanny how much more realistic she looks.
I think so too. As versatile as that RE Engine is, I could see it being able to do that.
The only thing they changed was her breast size...
It feels as if new Jill's and Claire's general characteristics got swapped.
It really makes me sad, I LOVE just how very campy RE was, there was a time where we were allowed to have fun, but now everything has to be broody and serious.
exact reason i just hate the environment of RE4 remake, so trash and generic, while OG re4 is campy as shit
They turned her into Alice
Unironically. Her design looks closer to Alice and her 'superhuman' traits are emphasized more through her enduring ridiculous amounts of damage without any permanent scarring (even when she's supposedly 'uninfected' for most of the remake). Main difference is that Alice is stoic to the point of being boring while R3mak3 Jill veers into the opposite problem of being too excitable and aggressive.
Capcon took a page out of the book of the dreadful Paul W.S. Anderson's movies 🤣🤣🤣 What an irony.

Yeah new Jill barely feels the same. She borderlines on being just a straight up B who curses too much.
@@TheRealAdaWong Did a similar thing to other characters in another series, and drastically redesigned them, but since gen z, twitter, left/"woke" millennials (many that seem to be female "artists"), tumblr users, and furries LOVE the new version, it is deemed 100% better in EVERYWAY. And anyone who disagrees gets mobbed.
Original Jill > New Jill
without attempting to starting a flame war from those that care and those livelihood pretends on caring:: They arent the same.
And this was only her second main line entry in 3? we dont even have modern characters in cinema that acts this way.. its toxic.
Oddly masculine facia features?
You must be kidding me. You don't know many women, right?
It isnt.
I can understand why people wouldn’t like it as much but I think vastly inferior is a stretch
"Vastly inferior" No she isn't. You're just nostalgia blinded.
@@Shevtress She is vastly inferior. She's ugly with a generic design and now a boss bitch. Jill was never any of those things until her character was butchered in 3make.
You Voth fanboys need to get the hell over it
I've never seen anyone have a hottest, more accurate take on this.
I agree with all that except the use of the term "fake fans" lol
Legit they could have given it to the VA that voiced his quotes in Dead by Daylight if DC Douglas can't come back for it, he's so close to capturing it I didn't even realize it wasn't the same VA until later.
You didn't notice it because you are a sheep a human npc
and then there was jill slapping carlos at some points on the original, in new jill defense she harshly talk to carlos at first because she knew carlos is under umbrella company and do you think she would talk calmly after knowing that?? she literally apologized to carlos and felt guilty for being harsh with him at their first met..if that wasn't a gentle action idk what it is
I NEED this video to blow up and circulate through the algorithm.
YOU need this to circulate? Bro, I need this to circulate.
In all seriousness though, thank you and totally agreed with everything you wrote.
My friend might have had a hand in making this video, because he's been yelling this from the rooftops for as long as I can remember. Good video.
@@omellemmor4732 Claire too it seems.
I miss Rebecca’s model too
She looked grown and not so cutesie
@@Carlos-ll7bz she was such a little sister! just the right blend of being annoying and sweet at the same time.
Where's her braided blonde hair?!" 😂
But anyways, thanks for the vid.
First thing that came to mind when I saw RE2 remake gameplay was these aren't the characters I remember.
11:35 you captured exactly how I felt seeing Jill again
Honestly, all Capcom had to do with Jill’s design in Death Island is just give her a different outfit and/or longer hair(most likely a ponytail because it’s what she’s known for in later games) and that’s it.
Keep the current hair tbf, and change clothes not the same ones from the remake.
Chris is a different person in 7 and Village from his persona in RE1-RE6 and the cgi movies.
Actually they don't, lmafo 😂... RE "community" it is not as strong outside twitter and even them will not able to save it from capcom forever 😢
yes right thank you re4 ORIGINAL is better than remake cut content and changes
OG Jill in RE1: Silence of the Lambs
RE3 Nemesis Jill: Law and Order
RE1 Remake Jill- Revelations Jill: Julia Voth
RE3 Remake Jill- Current: UA-cam Guntuber
They made her somehow less and less mature and sophisticated a character as soon as 3 Remake dropped, but I really missed her Ripley from Aliens vibe in Nemesis.
Rip Julia Voth’s Jill.
She’ll always be my favorite.❤😭
13:07-13:19 FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT
Capcom, Hire this man
I've been feeling the same way, Jill Valentine being my absolute favorite character.
