  • Is my Orchid Dead or Dormant? Top 8 Questions About Dormancy
    Once an orchid has blossomed, displaying its beautifully exotic flowers, it will go into a dormant cycle. Some orchids have a shorter dormant cycle while others need a little longer time to recover. Orchid dormancy starts after the last flower has fallen off the flower spike and can look very different in every species. Some hardly have any signs; others look half-dead. In this video, I'll go over the top most common questions new orchid growers have when it comes to dormancy.
    1) How do I know my orchid is dead?
    2) Do all the Leaves Drop During Dormancy?
    3) Why is it Important to Repot during Dormancy?
    4) Is Crown Rot Normal During Dormancy?
    5) Do All Orchids Respond to Dormancy the Same Way?
    6) How Long do Orchids Live?
    7) How do I Care for Dormant Orchids That Look Half-dead?
    8) How do I Induce a Dormancy Period?

    Thank you for this informational video!! I kept wondering if phals went through a long dormancy period. I have some that have created a flower spike and once the flowers drop, a couple weeks later there is another spike! I have started to branch out to other types of orchids (dendrobiums, cattleya, & vandeae), but instead of keeping them in their pots, I have started switching them to the Japanese art of kokedama (moss ball) or mounting them to driftwood branches.
    One question I have is will the care for a dormant kokedama style orchid be the same as one that is in a pot?

      HI Karen, Thank you. I'm not sure about awesome, but I appreciate the comment and am trying to get better. I'm still a newbie at UA-cam and have lots to learn. 😊😊 A fan? Yes! Absolutely! Even with my home office being so dry, I have to keep the air circulating so I don't get any type of water pooling on top of the leaves. Since it's getting colder now, I only keep it on during the day. During the summer months, I kept it on day and night. In this video, ua-cam.com/video/-TRyI6btESs/v-deo.html even though I talk about the cost of my small space, it will show you the humidifier I use, and my fan.

    I had a "stick" of a dendrobium orchid plant!! I thought it was dead, but the cane stalk was quite green. No leaves, and very naked roots. I kept it in water for about a month, then decided to pot it (charcoal and pebbles) to see what would happen. Last week I noticed a little "nub" on one side of the cane stalk - now the little nub is growing fast, and this morning I detected two tiny leaves. This is a stalk I rescued from our orchid nursery; all it had were dried up roots which eventually rotted away. I'm now dying to see what will evolve from this resilient and hardy stalk of a dendrobium orchid. Yes, it has been fertilised. It is now going on two months that I have it.

    I have one Specimen plant that has slightly yellow tips, where as none of the 3 others do. They all get the same light and water, but this is the only one with yellow tips. I googled "Cattleya with yellow tips on leaves" and AOS says it's either too much water, or not enough, which really helps a lot...NOT.
    I did have one plant get a little red sunburn and cover the greenhouse with 4 mil plastic, which is about equivalent to 20% shade cloth, nothing has been burned since.
    Those 14" baskets w/ Coco Coir take longer to dry out than the potted plants do, but the top 3/4 layer of media dries out fast but the bottom 1/4 of media stays damp for about 2 more days. I dont water until all is dry.
    Can't see where I'm making a mistake, or if having a little yellow is a mistake. Also this plant is "Hawaiian Island Bride" and in bloom with 7 flowers & buds.
    Oh yea, it's been pretty hot out there, yesterday it was 108° in the GH while outside is in the low 90°s. So I put a sprinkler on a timer to water the 4 mil plastic skin when the GH is dead nuts in the sun, which is a little under an hour. It was only 92° today in the GH, so I am starting to match inside - outside temps. A grower says his plants can take up to 120°, so that was comforting, hope I can keep it closer to 100° in August. More shade cloth maybe in order, but afraid lower light could cause other problems.

      Hi Tally, The yellow tips shouldn't be related to watering, which is funny as why they'd say that. At least for my growing conditions, the very tip yellowing means too much fertilizer (either too strong or too frequent).
      Is it only the tip or does the yellowing circle the entire leaf, like a halo?
      Cattleyas can take higher Temps as long as they are out of direct sunlight in the afternoon, so the shade cloth is perfect. If the yellowing was due to sun, it would only be on the leaves that are in direct contact with the rays. It wouldn't be uniform across all the tips. So I'm ruling this hypothesis out.
      I'd recheck the fertilizer.

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому

      Another thing... Have you checked the salt content in that coco coir? That could be pushing the fertilizer over the top. For that specific orchid, I'd rinse the pot out several times with water (no fertilizer added) and see if that helps. The tips won't turn back to green, but it will stop from further yellowing. Just an idea.

      @@Orchideria just started tea bag with a tablespoon of time release 10-10-10 in it, about 4 days ago. A lot of people sware by it, because in nature, nutrients flow down to the plant every time it rains. They show good results and it makes good sense to me. I also use complex B vitamines once every 2 weeks. For my buds and blooming plants I plan to use a black tea and banana skin tea mix twice a week but havent done that yet.
      I deal with one problem at a time before I add anything new to the mix and complicate things. In my experience, if you throw may things at a problem and it is fixed, you don't know which thing cured the problem.
      The yellowing is just on the very tips of the leaves, maybe a half inch on the very tips.

      @@Orchideria Dont know how to check for salt, but I heavily wash/flush it out with lots of water. When I need more potting mix, I soak enough to fill a large mixing bowl in a Lowes mix tub full of water, the kind the use to mix mortar in. Once soaked in the tub, I put it in a 1/4"mesh hardware cloth sifter and hose it down for a few minutes on the Shower setting of my sprayer, then let it air dry ready for use. I think that's a pretty good flush, so salt shouldn't be a problem.
      Oh yea...that $10.00 Lowes moisture meter maynot work very well. My grower in Fort Myers says the cheap ones don't work well, that I need one that cost $50.00 to $100.00 to have an accurate meter. So now I use a dry stick to put through the media, then touch it on my lips to see if it's cooler. If so there is still moisture in the mix, if not it's dry and may need watering. Lips are cheaper than a good meter, and I already have a pair that works pretty good.😁

    I am new to Orchid love. I have had 2 new blooming Phil. that grew a big new leaf when in bloom. Then, for a long time, there is not another leaf. I have noticed an increase in roots at that time. The leaves are very dark green. Is this normal?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  Рік тому

      Hi Karen, Dark green leaves usually means not enough light. Light is the main factor for blooming, so I'd move the orchidnto a place where it has more light and can bloom. It's normal to have phases of leaf growth then root growth one at a time.

    I have a phalaenopsis. The tag it came with said to water it once every 2 weeks during its dormant state. Would you say that is a good idea?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 роки тому

      Hi Isabellle, When it's not actively growing, it doesn't need that much water. Yet I think 2 weeks is a very long time, no matter what medium you use, but that's just me. Is where you live very dry? Or humid?

    Why my orchid leaves are turning yellow? :(

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому

      Hi Stella, If it's the bottom 2 leaves, than that is the normal life cycle for the orchid. They will "shed" the lower leaves and new ones will be born. If the leaves are the top leaves, or if the yellowing is not on the whole leaf, just in spots, then I suggest looking at the video of how to identify orchid problems, because that is not supposed to happen.
