Yellowing Orchid Spikes:7 Reasons & Their Remedies

  • One of the main ways orchids communicate what is happening to them is through the color change. Their leaves, roots, stems, and flower spikes can all change colors, displaying the most varied differences in what should be normal.
    If an orchid produces a flower spike and it turns into a pale yellow, either the potting medium and environment are too dry, it is suffering from nutrient deficiency, an extreme change in temperature suddenly affected the blossoms, high concentrations of elements in the water supply, presence of ethylene gas in the environment, and it might indicate a normal decaying process.

    Your videos are great. So informative and easy to understand for an orchid beginner like me. I still have difficulty diagnosing orchid problems and the majority of my orchids are dendrobium ( because those are the ones I haven't killed yet🤣). Thanks again for sharing. Warm greetings from the southern Caribbean 😎🌴☀

      Hi Nicole, wow! Thank you so much for your words. I appreciate it. 🙏 I think that we all have an orchid type we like more and others we like less. It's like they seem to grow better under our care than others, no matter what we do. The secret is to get that orchid that does best with you, and buy a whole bunch of them. :)

      I enjoy your videos always informative and calm. My growing conditions are similar in SW Pennsylvania. My water ph is neutral and I use a Britta water pitcher to filter the chlorine. Phals are in sphagnum moss and bark. The neofinetia are in moss so they like filtered water with distilled mixed in. I just got a Leptotes bicolor so still figuring her out. Got to love orchids. Missed your 🐈 need more of him.

      Hi Betpal! Thanks! I appreciate it. 🙏 Midnight has been asleep through the last set of videos, so that's why she isn't in them. It's probably because she's up at all hours of the night though...

      Hi Mark, LOL. I'm glad the videos are entertaining and informational. I'm still struggling with that balance, since I tend to be more educational (read=boring) and how to keep the videos viewable yet still provide solid info. So I appreciate your comment.

    I really appreciate your advice. I have a vanda that has a developing flower spike and it was looking great until, suddenly, the top portion turned yellow. Very sad. Its all part of the process of being an orchid Mom, I guess 🌺

    I need help. My orchid spike after it bloomed slowly has turned yellow hard. My other spike is still green no yellowing. I live in Fl it’s inside near a window that gets sun only morning times. Never had this issue. I am going to start watering more because the high temps. I have never re- potted it. Do I cut this spike? Where do I cut its yellow seems all the way to the stem. Thank you.

    I watched the entire video, but didn’t get an answer for what to do with my plant. Should I cut the stem? Keep the stem? What’s the treatment?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Cheree, I'm sorry about the confusion. You can cut the stem but where to cut depends on what you want done with the spike. If it yellows just a little bit, you can cut it back to the a little before the last flowering node (the furthest away from the stem). If you want the orchid to work on root growth, then you can cut it back to the very first node closest to the stem.

    Hi I had to make a decision. I got my 7 ice orchids 3 months ago and could see they had no space. So changed them to 1 liter clear pots made plenty holes. Found they had the little peat balls so glad got them out and got rid. The only worry is can not see any roots showing out of bark will they be alright until find edge of pots or will it make them rot not having light. Re potted 3 weeks ago since then I have found new top root growth and leaves and spikes from nodes so they do look healthy in there own stages of cycle. Leaves nice and green and shiny no change to flowering bloom on all plant's just roots worried about as can't see them and what there doing.

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Lee, The roots will take a while to reach the outside of the pot. I suggest you test everyday to see when you need to water by putting your finger 2.5 cm into the potting media, near the middle. The outside/outer layer of media will dry up first but the middle is the last place to dry.
