Thanks Keith! Been digging through a mountain of comments to get to yours. Glad you liked it. I've had tons of questions & views from this video and part 1 showing how it was built that I will have to make a part 3 showing more details like more shifting both transmissions.

@@lovesloudcars You're missing out if you don't know Deboss Garage. A knowledgeable Canadian mechanic with a great sense of humor who just wades through really cool projects. Way more entertaining than any of those dolled up, actor mechanics with their fake southern accents on TV. We have a '68 Kenworth powered by an 8V-92 Detroit 2 stroke on our farm that I learned to drive, hauling bales as a teenager. I'd always dreamed about dropping that engine into Grandpa's '58 Chev 1 ton. I gave up when I got out my measuring tape.
When I had my IH 3-53, I was living on a mountain (still do), with a 12% grade and 1600' to climb every night. The sound it made pulling that grade (with the water temps always cool no matter what the load was) was like this....great to hear it again! I shouldn't say this probably, but 40 years later I now drive a Prius, ha ha ha.
That's hilarious. Certainly not the same sounding machine as back then hey?? I think I drive older stuff in comparison now than I did then! My work truck is an 82 International with a 466, just over 100k miles on it. Between this & part 1 there's enough questions I'll have to make at least a part 3 to show & answer some of them. Hopefully get some posted within the month?? (fingers crossed)
Yup! Hope you liked it. Tons of comments & questions on this video, will have to make a part 3 I guess. Hope you check out part 1 if you didn't already.
I love that truck ,a 4 ×4 thansmission, that means if you use both shiffters you have a 16 speed .awsome .i have driven a 5 speed with a 4 speed. auxiliary trans.

Phoenix AZ owner of a 58 Panel. Its driven during cool weather everywhere. So much more fun to drive than ANY modern vehicle.Your truck is ready to report for duty sir!
That is cool Stan! I think the 58 and 59 are the best looking models. I've driven to Phoenix once and envy your winter weather. Planning to record some more footage of shifting and exploring things like what happens when both are in reverse. Stay tuned, stay safe and have a wonderful Christmas season.
That's cool Clay. Part of a very important & valuable part of history. There's lots of great engines out there, but those screaming jimmies hold a special place in a lot of hearts around the world. Part 1 was fun & will be definitely making a bit more of this one. Stay tuned!!
It is something only certified gearheads will appreciate. Very well done. I considered doing the same many years ago to a 59 1 ton I owned that had a Armbruster double cab on it as the frame was extended 26 inches to accomodate the conversion. Never got around to it with all my other projects and stuff. Now I'm 81 and no longer do this type of things, but I certainly do appreciate others keeping up the good works and posting so we can see it. Thank You, Fred
Wow Would that be a great truck to get hold of now days Fred! Will do my best to keep things like this going. I'm 30 years behind you but probably dislike the new stuff more than you do!! Got any old projects you need passed on?

@@lovesloudcars First, You're Welcome.. I think a "in reverse" race video is in your future,.. your Apache against a late model something.. the roll out on the vids is great, keeps 'em coming back for more. Great job, LLC !
I’m usually not much for patina, but she looks so honest and genuine. And the engine swap + 2 transmissions is genius. She looks like she’s worked hard every day of her life and she is Ready for more.
Thanks Bernard! It's all genuine for sure. The patina thing is a new trend trying to appear like this one became naturally over the decades. I tend to agree with you that I'd prefer restored to have nice paint. My father drove this truck back & forth to the sawmill when I was a boy & i can assure you this was a WORK truck not a town version of it.. I'm not sure if you watched part 1 where I showed the walk around & explained how I put it together. You might enjoy that. I bought another 59 Apache this summer. & have all the components to build version 2! @@lovesloudcars a truck I’d be proud to drive every day. Always been fascinated by Detroit Diesel 2 stroke motors… seems like they would be very efficient compared to 4 stroke motors
@@bernardboka4277 I've always loved the Detroit engines. I probably have 8 or 10 of them.. If you're interested in crazy cool 2 stroke, look into the opposed piston engines! Achates is a new(ish) company messing with them. I first saw on in an airplane museum. German built around second was "Junkers" certainly spelled wrong. Two stroke opposed piston diesel airplane engine. 6 cylinders 12 piston 2 crank shafts, no head or valves. Fantastic.
The 3-53 has always been my favorite sounding jimmy. The Coast Guard used it in the 26 foot lifeboats they carried on the cutters. Nice to hear one again.
Bet it puts you right back to a specific place & brings a smell to mind as well! Between this video & part 1 walk around & explanation I've been swamped with questions & comments. Will have to make a part 3 showing a bit more I guess.
Absolutely fantastic! I’ve always love the style of this truck and I love you guys style with two transmissions and a Detroit diesel! I am in Ontario and I’d just love to see this thing up close. You know this would be a great truck to show. Excellent! The body seems pretty good and I could just imagine it done up in its original colour with the original chrome installed. Nothing like the sound of a Detroit diesel even a little one like this.
Yup . I love the dual headlights way better than the singles. A Detroit just has something about it hey? I like your name by the way, did you get a kick out of the Tax me hat? If you're ever in North Western Alberta come on over & we'll check it out. Hard decision to know what would be best - show room restoration or more rat rod style with the patina paint... I'm planning to record some more in the spring, like more shifting, maybe some drone footage & exploring what happens when both are in reverse, so stay tuned! Meanwhile other things like blowing up beaver dams, and less exciting weekly adventures.
I used to be 50 once upon a time. I love the sound of that Detroit. I'm a long haul truck driver and I always loved the old two-stroke Detroit Diesels. :)
Thanks! It really is a cool truck hey? Got new tires and rims finally this fall, so hopefully will get a chance to make a few more videos of it including shifting and exploring things like what happens when both transmissions are in reverse. @@lovesloudcars yep. Any jack ass can lower a pickup and drop a pos cumminig in it and think they are cool. Take a regular Gm pickup and leave it alone with a gm detroit. That is nice. Not everybody wants a dropped midget vehicle
@@bullcraphere1316 That’s the point of mounting the second one backwards. When you’re in a lower gear, what is happening normally? The input shaft is spinning faster than the output. So when mounted backwards, the input shaft (which is now the output shaft) in 3rd, 2nd and 1st is now spinning faster than than the shaft coming into it from the first transmission.
lovesloudcars I’d say all the old girl needs is some serious highway gears in the back, I’m not sure what the gearing is right now but she’s screaming in both fourth gears haha
I’m from Manitoba and bought a 1959 Chevrolet Apache fixer upper over thirty years ago. I swapped it a rebuilt 261 Pontiac motor, bought retreaded 19.5 Michelin retreads and put new brakes in then extended the frame to put a 12 foot deck on although I still have the original 9 foot step side box for it yet. I then taught myself to weld by building a 24 foot long gooseneck trailer which I still have also. I hauled everything from round bales to logs to lumber to tractors with this rig and never broke anything mostly because I never let anyone else borrow it!After I quit farming and moved to an acreage I brought my truck with me and used to start it almost every year but neglected it for a couple of years until last fall when I got a friend to help tow it into my yard Wish me luck!!!with the brakes stuck but we got them loose enough to do that.So hopefully I can get it running and play with it again this year!
Fantastic! I'm filled with excitement and jealousy at the same time. I think the 59 is the best looking truck Chevy ever made. I hope you checked out part 1 as well. Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend. Will you be posting videos of yours? If I was closer I'd want a video of it myself. Yesterday I posted a video of a whole bunch of fixer uppers.
my Grandpa had dual 3 speed transmissions installed similar to your setup back in the early 1960s. the old timers knew this would work but Ive had a tough time over the years getting anybody to believe it. Thanks for the test ride. I love the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit! The only other time Ive seen a Detroit 3-71 into a Chevy (a 70s square box) it had a Clark 5 speed and a Browning over under box behind it. It was a workhorse!
That's fantastic! Glad you found the video and made a comment.. I'd have loved to see that truck! Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend! Did you see part 1?
I used to! it's a great truck Between this video & part 1 walk around & explanation I've been swamped with questions & comments. Will have to make a part 3 showing a bit more I guess.
I'm a small time, part time scrapper. Supplements my pension, gives me somethin' to do. I found a blown up 3-71 in the local dump years ago. It was disassembled. I grabbed the blower and sold it to an old hot rodder for $150! He knew how to rebuild em for gas engines. A year ago, I found a 4-71 at the same dump. It's on a Reservation on the coast, and we got a ton of old, wooden fishing boats. Would love to find a 6-71 blower someday! Anyhow, lotta Detroits out here, still.
An endless supply of potential projects.. I'd probably end filling 50 acres with junk that would sell for 3 cents after I die. I probably have 8 or 9 Detroit engines plus a bunch of other stuff. Might do a Detroit collection video..
I rode in one of the first automatic transmissions in a Semi back in the 1970s made by Detroit Diesel in Indy. I will never forget how proud they were of it when they demonstrated it during a short ride & told me how rare & new it was. Detroit diesel was also merging with Rolls Royce on making aircraft engines at the time. I think maybe Detroit Diesel was working on the fan blades at the time. They were a wonderful company at that time. That transmission was really something back then. That sound really brings back memories.
I bet it brings you right back to a certain place! sounds & smells do that hey? Lots of Detroit lovers like myself around the world. Between this video & part 1 walk around & explanation I've been swamped with questions & comments. Will have to make a part 3 I guess.
Well I'm glad you enjoyed it it certainly wasn't one of those well-rehearsed and scripted documentaries like you see on TV. I still need to make a couple more videos of it exploring things like what happens when both transmissions are in reverse and get some better footage of shifting and i'd like to get some drone footage of it that would be fun but as you can see for my channel I'm always busy. I thank you for watching and also for your comment. stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend.
keep on truckin Man Lol you’re probably not too far off Back on topic though, theoretically because of the way the transmission(s) work on this truck, I would think it would have the same top speed capabilities in forward and reverse. With that being said, a 3-53 won’t exactly be a barn burner, but goddamn it will sure clean all of those tree stumps out of your yard RIGHT now.
Not exactly sure should be 60-70? Tons of views on this and part 1, maybe I'll make a part 3 to show a bit more like shifting and speed once the tires are replaced.
Let's see...assuming the "economy" rear end for 1-tons (4.57:1) and 32" tires, with the aux & main transmissions in 4th, cruising speed at 2500RPM is 52MPH. SM420 ratios (according to my '67 dealer data book) are: 7.02:1 1st 3.56:1 2nd 1.71:1 3rd direct 4th 6.78:1 reverse So in a O/D configuration they'd be: direct 4th 0.58:1 3rd 0.28:1 2nd 0.14:1 1st 0.15:1 reverse That makes top forward speed in each O/D gear (assuming all other variables are unchanged): 52MPH 4th 89MPH 3rd (!) 186MPH 2nd (!!!) 367MPH 1st (!!!!!!!) That'd be a quick trip to Vancouver Island!
This brings back memories. I remember being in front of Kenny Isom Industrial Engineering Caldwell, Idaho listening to a 353 Detroit ideling in a Toyota Land Cruser. Had to be about 1973 or so. I remember he had a browning behind the main box. Think browning was three speed but that was a long time ago. Fun listening to driver shifting after leaving business putting her up thru the gears. Nothing like the sound of a 2 cycle Detroit. The primary reason I am deaf today as an owner of a International 4200 conventional with a 318 Detroit. Oh to be young once again.
The good ol 871! If I had an auxiliary I'd have likely used it instead , but This worked good. ( don't know if you watched part 1) Glad you liked the video

Put the rear trans in Reverse and run the front 1 through 4, so high gear is synchronized? Run both sticks in reverse for a super-low-granny mode? (Not sure why you'd want that beyond testing the torque limitations of the driveshafts and axles... LOL
@@JT-SE-OHIO Yes, exactly - a super-low granny-gear - perfect for that modern "In My Feelings" challenge, where you can get out of the truck and film yourself dancing alongside of it, with a cane and walker, get five shots at taking the video, and still not get out of the garage :-D
That's funny. I'm not sure you are right though. First in front & reverse in back should be super low reverse? reverse in both should be same as direct forward. Will have to put out a # 3 it looks like. Tons of comments & questions on this video as well as part 1.
@@lovesloudcars My initial comment was suggesting two different scenarios (not sure if that got confused or not) - Assuming both transmissions are the same, it should make no difference which box is in reverse, for the end result to be the same -- except that if the rear box is reversed, you won't be shifting "backwards" 4th-through-1st, you'll be running the front through the gears 1-through-4 normally - the difference being that 4th is a synchro'd gear, so no playing with clutch and cramming the stick trying to keep from grinding. The "both sticks in reverse" was a different concept, a very heavily gear-reductioned forward gear (I know that's not a word... "gear-reduced" just didn't seem to fit the sentence very well LOL)

Planning to record some more footage of it messing around with things like what happens when both are in reverse and showing some more shifting and such. Stay tuned and thanks for watching & your comments. Also Merry Christmas!
Hah, I'm seriously imagining that if I won the lottery, I'd probably get something like this first and get the obligatory Lamborghini later. No rush they've got plenty of those out there.
Canadians are so " Cool " ... compared to most of Americans .... which I'm a Texan born and raised & still here in Texas ( 64 years) ... anyway... listening to this Canadian talk and while explaining about the Pickup... I had flashbacks of the movie " Fargo " LOL! The first Pickup I drove that had a manual transmission was a 56 Chevy 6 cylinder gasser 3 speed when I was 19 years old... working for the College yard maintenance crew! They had 4 old 50 model Chevy gassers and a couple of Fords . I would like to own an Old 50 or 60 model Chevy Pickup ( Gas) ... but I wouldn't be able to work on it being disabled after having to have back surgery 11 years ago! ( Degenerative Disc disease, 8 Titanium rods and nerve damage) ... I enjoyed the video... thanks for sharing! 👍👍😎
I'm very glad you enjoyed it Warren and that it brought back some good memories. I obviously love the truck, but I also really enjoy connecting with folks & hearing their thoughts & memories. Driving that old truck (I assume it was a 3 on the tree) would likely have not been as thrilling then as the memory is now. Meanwhile I'll try to share other adventures that are easier on your back to watch than to experience. Always family friendly, and hopefully entertaining. Planning to do some more videos of it after winter is over and the tires are changed & brakes gone over. Planning to get some more footage of shifting & messing with the gears to answer questions like what happens when both are in reverse. So stay tuned and I'll do my best to keep you entertained. Posted another blowing up a beaver dam a couple weeks ago. Music on your profile picture: who's your favorites? Mine Mark Knopfler.
Thanks SteamGent. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Part 1 shows a little more about how I put it together (if you haven't seen it already). Either way. I think 58 and 59 were the best looking truck Chevy ever made. Add in a Detroit engine & it's all noise and beauty! Thanks for watching and for your comment. Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend.
My son has some friends that live in the upper peninsula of Michigan which I is really a part of Ontario. They talk the same, build specialized cars and trucks the same, live 20 miles past the end of the map. His friends were into off road racing. They build a 2 transmission Subaru Brat. Half car half pick up. They did not turn #2 trans around. They wanted reduction. They had creeper gears that could climb trees. They talked just like Red Green. My son was up there going to Michigan Tech to become an engineer. I went there for 2 years to avoid an all expenses paid, one year vacation to sunny Vietnam. Still go there in the summer for a refresher course in how life is suppose to be lived. My son’s professors drove snow machines to work starting in late November early December. They had to cross a 1/4 mile section of open shipping cancel that didn’t freeze until January. Oh yeah, you just screw it open, hit about 60 and it will go as far as you want on open water, no problem. Crazy world north of the 45th parallel. Must be dem nordern lights! Like your style. Never move down into the madness. It will F you up!
Maybe it is the northern lights after all. Good memories and good advice. I've never been real fond of the winter cold, but yet here I still am. The Subaru guys, I've heard of people doing that too. Sometimes I think you have to think a little outside the box and dare to try. Thanks again for your comments, that's one of the things I enjoy about this is connecting with other people wherever they are.
MAN the 'ol Detroit sounds GOOD...I wonder why nobody else ever did this - maybe with newer trucks? This COULD be such a great SHOW TRUCK, guys! I know you're HONEST farmin' lads - but bring this to a few local shows! Let more people see/hear it! (a fan in Toronto who hasn't been to Alberta in years!)
There's too much disposable junk these days. I'd like to spend some time driving it and make more videos but keep getting distracted with the million other projects and life. I bought another 59 Apache pickup last year and have another engine. Could build a 4x4 version! I need to quit my job and play full time!
Thanks Chris. It does fit well & adds all kinds of character I think. I'm hoping to capture some more things in the new year when the truck is more road worthy. Things like more shifting , maybe some drone footage & exploring things like what happens when both are in reverse. Stay tuned!
Watching this is a great way to start off our Swedish Midsommar weekend! Truly awesome, I didn´t realize until now you´re Canadian, that just makes everything better... Cheers!

one of the best starting engines I've ever owned - if not the best.I had no batteries for a while in it & used to park it on a set of oilchange ramps & pop the clutch when it was rolling. It would be running before it was off the ramps.
Thanks Michael. I agree on both points. - in the summer time at least, the winter I'm not so fond of.. Will be trying to post a bit more about it as time goes by.
Thanks for watching! Will have to put out a # 3 it looks like. Tons of comments & questions on this video as well as part 1. Maybe we'll get some good footage from outside too.
Nice 👍🏽😁 I haven't been to Canada in about 25 years. Last time I went with my grandmother was when the Peace Bridge had its 50th anniversary....that was even longer ago ☹
Glad you liked the video. Time visit again after all this lock down stuff is over. Tons of views and questions on this video and part 1. Will have make at least part 3 to demonstrate a few more things a bit better
I'd love to have me a Detroit. Those engines are tougher than nails. That engine sounds a lot bigger than it looks. Once all that lovin' gets put into it, that truck will be second to none.
@@lovesloudcars Yes, I sure did. I really like what you did with everything ( engine, exhaust, both transmissions, driveshafts, etc. ) That is some outstanding mechanic work and creativity. I'm looking forward to part 3.
Thanks Ross! I am partial to it myself but there's been a ton of people who seem to agree. Tons of comments & questions on this video and part 1 showing the walk around. I think I'll have to make at least a part 3

There is only one thing that is that loud n slow besides a sherman tank. A 59 Chevy with a Detroit diesel! 👍 Much love from the USA

An Evinrude BRP 1.9L 3 cyl G2 would be a good alternative to a 3-53. Its now the Rotax 1.9L 3 cyl outboard.
If the words Detroit Diesel are in the title, it's probably gonna go viral 😆 love it!

It is something only certified gearheads will appreciate. Very well done. I considered doing the same many years ago to a 59 1 ton I owned that had a Armbruster double cab on it as the frame was extended 26 inches to accomodate the conversion. Thanks Bernard! It's all genuine for sure. The patina thing is a new trend trying to appear like this one became naturally over the decades. well, as far as i know those are both 1:1 transmissions. that means they have no gear reduction ratio. if so it doesnt do anything lol

28.5 miles an hour
keep on truckin Man Lol you’re probably not too far off
Back on topic though, theoretically because of the way the transmission(s) work on this truck, I would think it would have the same top speed capabilities in forward and reverse. With that being said, a 3-53 won’t exactly be a barn burner, but goddamn it will sure clean all of those tree stumps out of your yard RIGHT now.
@@calebkey2050 Thanks!
SM420 ratios (according to my '67 dealer data book) are:
7.02:1 1st
3.56:1 2nd
1.71:1 3rd
direct 4th
6.78:1 reverse
So in a O/D configuration they'd be:
direct 4th
0.58:1 3rd
0.28:1 2nd
0.14:1 1st
0.15:1 reverse
That makes top forward speed in each O/D gear (assuming all other variables are unchanged):
52MPH 4th
89MPH 3rd (!)
186MPH 2nd (!!!)
367MPH 1st (!!!!!!!)
That'd be a quick trip to Vancouver Island!
( don't know if you watched part 1)

Put the rear trans in Reverse and run the front 1 through 4, so high gear is synchronized? Run both sticks in reverse for a super-low-granny mode? (Not sure why you'd want that beyond testing the torque limitations of the driveshafts and axles... LOL
Wouldn't reverse plus reverse equal forward?
Mind blown

Between this video & part 1 walk around & explanation I've been swamped with questions & comments. Will have to make a part 3 I guess
Looks like a lot of fun, love to see that 59 going down the road.Good luck with her and have fun.
Between this video & part 1 walk around & explanation I've been swamped with questions & comments. Will have to make a part 3 showing more driving & shifting I guess.
I’m so happy knowing someone knows how to shut down a runaway engine, better and less expensive fix
I've heard of a few runnaways & been around a couple.- watched lots on you tube. Glad you liked the video.
From all the questions & comments from this video as well as the part 1 showing everything in the walk around, I'm going to have to make a part 3 at least to show the gears & shifting & speeds a bit better for sure.
This is the coolest truck I’ve ever seen, without a doubt.
Thanks for the compliment. I agree with you. All the character and unique things, plus the 58 and 59 are probably the best looking truck ever built by Chevy.
I hope you checked out part 1 showing how it was put together. Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment too. I'm planning to record some more footage of shifting and exploring things like what happens when both are in reverse. Hopefully some good driving and drone shots as well.
that thing is a doll! Flashed off like she'd been running an hour previous and sounds amazing. Keep 'er keepin' on!
Like I said in part 1 that's how she started all the time. Always fun.
@@lovesloudcars almost wonder if the battery took a charge while you were drivin' the thing. Did you try bumping it on the starter?
that sounds very intimidating...that truck should be in production...chances are I be on a waiting list...
I agree 100% tough, cool, usable, character,. Just plain good idea.
I wish I had 50 of these. Part 1 walk around was fun, this was more fun. Planning to make a couple more to show & demonstrate a bit better detail & answer questions like "what happens when they both are in reverse?"
I'd pay good money for it the way she sits this to me is automotive perfection like to see what my other favorite Canadian peg thinks of it
No such thing as perfect ( no jake). - close though.
Between the tons of comments & questions on this video as well as part 1, I'll have to put out a # 3 it looks like.
Ah no Jake you've got me there sir either way damn fine build good job
Nothing like the sound of a Detroit Diesel 👍🏼
Oh yeah! Isn't that the truth hey? Glad you enjoyed the video. Still gonna make some more footage of shifting and exploring things like what happens when both transmissions are in reverse.
Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend.
I love it when someone says you can't do something yet you show them otherwise. Add a two speed rear to what you have and that baby would really fly. It's a nice looking old girl with a country grown attitude....be careful with those split rims though; if they come apart they can be deadly.... in some states; DOT won't allow them on the highways any longer. Florida is one of them. Thanks for sharing from ShadyHills, Florida. USA.
Yes they don't have the nickname widow makes for nothing... Between this video & part 1 walk around I've had a surprising amount of views & comments ( almost buried trying to get through them). Will have to make a part 3 at least to show a bit more detail & fun I guess. But first replace the tires that are older than 75% of the viewers & make sure she's roadworthy.
Got to take out my corvette yesterday though! hope you check out the channel if you are interested -lots of family friendly variety.
I love it ! There's only two kinds of engines .... Detroit Diesel and the other brands LOL !
That's funny. Keep your Yellow one on the road too!!
Got to get me one of them Detroit!!!!
And a couple of transmissions.
get them & build on!
Between this video & part 1 walk around & explanation I've been swamped with questions & comments. Will have to make a part 3 I guess
I've always wanted an Apache. They are very hard to come by. Especially in that shape still.
Shit, there's a guy with 5+ in his lot around the corner from me.
Colin Camus where are you?
@@HubertofLiege he's in the north pole
well Colin let me know when he wants to get rid of them...
Bighorn 44 if you need to clear out the yard let me know. - BUT DON"T TELL MY WIFE
This guy would make a really good reality show. Amazing ingenuity
I don't mind trying but would be tough to pump out quality original for a long time without some massive budget & time. so far this hobby has paid me zero, But I'll do my best! Tons of comments & questions on this video, will have to make a part 3 I guess. Hope you check out part 1 if you didn't already.
I'm in heaven watching this video. Thx for the video.
Thanks Fernando! I enjoyed sharing it & am pleasantly surprised at the amount of response. I've always loved this truck & wondered who else might like it.
Between part 1 walk around & part 2 driving it, I've had tons of feedback & questions. I'm definitely going to be making a couple more at least to show things a bit more. Stay tuned hopefully I'll be able to get them soon.
Love the screamin Jimmys.
Me too James!
Part 1 shows it better plus explains the truck more. Lots of questions & comments, I'll maybe have to make part 3.
"If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy"
Seriously that auxiliary transmission is amazing. I gotta figure out how to do that myself!
Go for It! Mostly I think I takes a bit of nerve more than anything. Let me know when you get it done!
@@lovesloudcars I'll definitely think on it. Wouldn't be for a while though. I've got to many other things going on right now, and I'm about to get into trucking.
Sounds like an old timberjack lol
Lol that's what I was thinking too
Exactly. - different smell because not the same twigs & crap stuck everywhere....
Among all my crap I have a 60's Franklin with a 353 & a Timberjack with a 453
You know when your looking at a fantastic job, 10 years later it runs and drives as good as the day you built it.
ERk409 said something about Canadians being like Americans, well, maybe in 1920s to 1950s, Canadians have pride and dignity, and on display on this video is class, no swearing, no ridiculous comments, no baggy pants at his knees, simply a guy whos a straight shooter.
We go up into Nanticoke to pick up argon, and on the way pass many, many farms, farms in great condition, lawn mowed, nothing out of place, theres alot of pride in Canada, I wish we had as much here in the states.
Great video, enjoyed the Detroit, another good noise comes from the 238 in a aingle axle, drove one with a 13sp in a cabover it was an old 4070 International, boy did that sound cool. Would love to fund old cabover 8v92 to build and play with, Detroits are the best.
Thanks Sleeping! It's been more than 10 years too- closer to 25-30 and she's running just fine!- so I guess I'm getting old. Parts of my yard are looking good, - others not so much, but I think you are right. As for video content I appreciate your comments. I like to share stuff that I hope are entertaining & just different than what most folks see. Keeping git family friendly for viewers is a goal for sure, I don't need any of that other stuff in my life either.
Always loved the sound of a Detroit engine, have several more out back in various stages of life. I've even got a 353 that's rebuilt & kept in a shed since 1984, still don't know what to do with it, (like saving a candy so you still have it)
Hope you check out the other videos I've posted & find further enjoyment.
You need to look up zip ties n bias plies
I've been know to do a little rigging in my life, but sir I bow to you. Well played.
Thanks Donald. Glad you enjoyed it. If you didn't watch part 1 showing how it was put together you might find that interesting.
Hoping to record some more footage showing a bit more shifting as well as exploring things like what happens when both are in reverse.
Meanwhile stay tuned & I'll do my best to share entertaining & interesting things.
I bet that thing is fairly fuel efficient. Did you ever measure it?
Fuel inefficiency and couldn't meet smog emissions limits is what killed it. A very reliable and great sounding engine.
@@Hanzyscure Diesels are not fuel inefficient... it also has very large cyclinders comapred to modern engines, which means tends toward more efficiency. It's basically a 2.7L 3 cylinder. Achates power has a modern take on this engine design by eliminating the head (basically 2 half size 353 detroits bolted to each other with an injector on the side.... electronic controls and in a ford F-150 it got about 37mpg... and had emissions good enough to meet next gen standards. ua-cam.com/video/usmauFigpzk/v-deo.html even a plain jain 353 in a pickup ought to get around 20mpg with the right gearing (3.08 or similar) and a turbo.
@@tripplefives1402 30 plus mpg ? I don't believe that . A 4 stroke diesel might be 30% more efficient than a gas engine. A 2 stroke is not.
@@tripplefives1402 diesels are way more efficient. They don't use any gas..... I had to say it
@@tripplefives1402 well then...that went straight from a joke to science real quick lol
What's top speed in forward? Sorry if you mentioned it i missed it and i know top speed would be a bad idea with those tires

I think he said 60 MPH.
👌🏼
RP's right- though I never did clock it for top capable.
Between this video & part 1 walk around & explanation I've been swamped with questions & comments. Will have to make a part 3 showing a bit more I guess. new tires & bleed the brakes & see what it will actually do.
“There, now I don have to shoat “
You know it! Hope you enjoyed it.
Will have to put out a # 3 it looks like. Tons of comments & questions on this video as well as part 1.
Just stumbled across your part 1 on this truck. Hands down...the coolest truck AND videos on YT currently. Who doesn't LUV the sounds of an ol' screamin' Detroit. Pure music for the ears imo.
Thanks Oldskool, I kinda like it myself and glad so many others do as well.
I'm planning to record some more footage showing better view of shifting and exploring things like what happens when both are in reverse.
Won't get to it this winter, but it's in the cards.
Meanwhile I hope you are interested in other things I shared and keep posting. I've got one video lots of folks like about pushing out a beaverdam with the log skidder, plus a few odds and ends. Next up ( hopefully this week yet) is another beaverdam vs tannerite video from this summer.
Stay tuned and thanks for the great compliment.
Ran a bunch of Detroit’s on logging equipment and trucks, have to hearing damage to prove it! 353,453,471,671 some silver series with turbos. We ran a 353 T in a knuckle boom loader and it turned 2500 rpm to get enough flow out of the pumps. Don’t be afraid to let it wind up. They can do it for thousands of hours! Your old 1 ton is probably geared pretty low. Neat old truck!
Thanks Carl! They didn't get the nickname Screaming Jimmies for nothing! I have a bunch of them in various stages between rebuilt and looking for a home to " not sure if it runs". Figure I'll make a video of them all just for kicks.
Glad you enjoyed the truck. It's my favorite looking Chevy model.
Stay tuned for further nonsense and entertainment my friend.

I'm a Dodge guy but I would *love* to have that truck! Old school ingenuity never ceases to amaze me! 🙂👍

I've had my 57 3154 Chevy 4x4 since I was 17. I'm 59 now. It has the factory installed Napco 4x4 set-up. Currently running a .030 over 350 with a Duntov cam and Fuelie heads.
Now that is super cool! Not many get to hang on to their vehicle like that.
Tons of comments & questions on this video, will have to make a part 3 I guess. Did you also see part 1?
That is the coolest old school truck I have seen. Thank You for sharing this with us. Being born in 61 I should have seen one before this.
I've always thought these were the best looking 50's trucks with the dual headlights.
Glad you liked it. Although being born in 61 I doubt you were watching for that model for the first few years of the 60's!
Hoping to record some more video of more shifting, maybe drone footage following it while accelerating and exploring things like what happens when both are in reverse. Stay tuned!
That Rig is Absolutely Beautiful..
Fantastic Sound too....
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for the compliment and watching the video. Hoping to capture some more footage of shifting and exploring things like what happens when both are in reverse. Stay tuned and I'll try to get more recorded whenever winter finally leaves.
She sounds GLORIOUS! OMG!
Yes. she does hey? I'm planning to record a few more to show better shifting & explore things like what happens when both are in reverse and a few other ideas. - AFTER the tires are replaced. Can't figure out how to try and clock it in reverse safely - probably won't try it straight on in case it goes bad because it will go bad in capital letters if it does. And maybe a little footage above with a drone. So stay tuned & thanks for checking it out. Glad you enjoyed it.
Meanwhile, other odds & ends & entertaining things to share until the weather is good enough to run the truck again. Posted another video yesterday of blowing up part of a beaver dam with Tannerite. Hope you enjoy, & stay safe out there!

Neat old truck ... nothing better than twinsticks behind an old diesel 👍
You got that right! I wish I had a few smaller auxiliary transmissions now. I'd use one asap on my work truck.
Thanks for making another video !
My pleasure! We'll have to make another yet I think to answer & demonstrate a few things better. I don't like super long videos so it's hard to know how much to post.
I would drive this instead of tank. My drill rig had a 353 Detroit. We called it Damion. Only one thing in the world sounds like that and 59 Chevy. Goosebumps!!
I'm glad you liked it Jesse. I feel the same way, it's s beautiful looking truck, I think the 58 and 59 are the best looking truck Chevy ever made. Add to that the melody of a 353 Detroit engine an extra transmission and voila- a thing of beauty.

I bought another 59 Apache last summer as well as an old international truck with a small auxiliary transmission. I've got a divorced transfer case I bought years ago for 25$, I could build a version two 4x4!
As you can see from my channel I'm not short on projects.

Sounds better than 95% of the trucks these days, ole Detroits have always been my favorite and can tell what they are miles away where i live. Would love to find and install a 453T in my 79 F150 but they are as rare as hens teeth and more expensive than mule dentures around my area.
you have a 451? or a 453? Not many 451's around. I've only seen videos of them.
missed out on a ( should not have) 353 this week. - not sure if it ran or anything for 200$
