5043 Roaring Up Sapperton! The Cotswold Explorer - 19th October 2013

Due to the success of last year's 'Cotswold Explorer', Vintage Trains decided to have a re-run. Once again this tour would run from Tyseley to Oxford and back, out via the Golden Valley Line and back via the Cotswold Line. Again this tour would feature Tyseley's finest in the form of 5043 'Earl Of Mount Edgcumbe'. As with last year's run I decided to film the outward leg on the climb to Sapperton Tunnel, although this time I chose the foot crossing at Frampton Mansell rather the top of the tunnel. Ordinarily I like to keep my videos as short as I can - within reason - but today I thought I'd use as much of this shot as I could, so you guys can properly experience the sound of a Castle storming up through the Golden Valley. And as ever, 5043's performance up the bank was simply stunning, talk about rolling thunder!
Now this is where the video ends, however, there was supposed to be a second shot of the return run taken near Broad Campden, on the climb to Chipping Campden Tunnel. Unfortunately when the Earl appeared she was only coasting along at medium to slow speed. She also appeared out of the trees to the left of where I thought she would, meaning I had to make a quick readjustment. Not worth uploading I'd say.....
At least I had that epic performance up Sapperton though!
Later on I was informed by a friend that the laid back performance up to Chipping Campden was because they were timed for 60mph up there rather than the usual 75mph, and of course with the GUV on board they didn't require the water stop at Moreton-In-Marsh as they did with last year's run, so she would have already been up to speed long before she got to us.
