In this era of knives, nobody should be choosing between design and specs. Finding a knife with both at just about any price range is doable. Once your collection gets up over 20 knives or so, you find yourself making the choice not to settle on either, otherwise you'll never really end up with knives you actually desire.

For the Crooked River Vs Griptilian guy, I have both and have XL hands. Both knives are plenty big enough for my hands. IMO the Griptilian is a more form fitting handle and is a better size for EDC. The Crooked River is awesome, but I generally carry it for camping or outdoor activities, because its pretty dang big. Can't go wrong with either for large hands tho, so really comes down to cost and appearance.

DCA your reviews have not only reignited my interest in knives after a several year hiatus but they have also influenced well over half of my current collection. I grew up with knives as my father was an EDC guy many years before it was a thing. He collected hundreds of knives, pens, zippos, and the like. Lately I’ve been been enjoying one of my most recent purchases, the CJRB Gobi. This knife gets very little attention but I think it’s awesome. Is there anything out there that’s a similar design that you recommend under the $100 mark? Doesn’t seem to be a lot out there.

How popular are tracker-style knives, like the tops tom brown or the Becker? Are they worth the additional weight over a more traditional fixed blade? You've mentioned knives in the past that can fit chopping tasks and batoning, so I wanted to ask if tracker style knives had any real advantages to those knives considering tracker knives are heavy and quite expensive.

Hi all, new to EDC and I am looking for a recommendation. I chose the Civivi Praxis as my first folder. Overall I am pretty happy with it (nice action, micarta scales, good weight), but I would like sth smaller. I work at a desk, so a bit hard to justify having a large knife in my pocket as a daily carry.
I'd like sth with great action, multiple ways to open (the Praxis has no spidey flick option or thumbscrew, want sth more fidgety!), generally prefer a contoured handle. Drop point or maybe a tanto. Happy with a liner lock. I have seen some beautiful blades with a very high contour that look awesome. I'm not too fussed about the blade steel. I like the look of g10 for the handle. Thinking around $75-$100 USD, I am in Australia, so that won't really be 'budget here'. Can't be assisted as they are not legal here. Hope I am not being too picky with what I am looking for, with the prices we pay for knives here, I don't want to buy a bunch of them before find what I want. Thanks for the great content, keep it up :)

I’ve seen reviews, but I’d really like to hear your thoughts about them. 2) Are button locks safe? I’ve been watching a lot of videos about knives that I”m thinking of purchasing and I got to wondering if button locks were safe. It occurred to me that if you aren’t paying attention or wearing gloves or something, if you grip too high it might fail. Am I just overthinking it? Thanks so much!

Hey DCA, I have a couple of general question:
    1. Why get rid of a knife? If you are a knife collector, why not keep the knife? Yes, I understand there is a possibility of storage space. But if you didn't have to worry about storage space, why give it away? Are there knives that are not worth keeping? Are there knives that should be thrown out, or recycled?
    2. Why isn't Thomas in the videos? Is he hiding from law enforcement? Or is he part of the knife mafia and doesn't want his picture taken?

I respect American made knives, but I think everyone should own a Boker Kalishnikov. It's 50 bucks, fully automatic, and very well made. I used to own a Benchmade 535 Bugout that cost $160 and it wasn't even remotely as nice as my Boker. It had thin plastic handles, and didn't spring out (automatic) and close easily. It actually hurt my thumb a little each time I had to close it. If you're super worried about your state laws in regards to automatic knives, then don't go for it, but what is law enforcement really doing if they find an automatic knife in a state where you aren't supposed to have one? Plus, when are they ever going to see it? It's in your pocket. I personally think people get too hung up on American made knives and assuming they're better just because they're made in America. Could you buy a much more expensive made in the US knife that's overall better than the Boker? Sure, but I would argue the return in investment is vastly diminishing.

Hey Steve Simmons, check out Survive Knives. They make beastly knives out west somewhere. Saber grinds, 20cv or 3v steel and g 10 handles. I think they make up to a 12” blade with kydex sheaths. I own five and love them all.

I’m wondering why when brining up a Buck knife as an all around USA made folding knife to recommend why go with the Buck 112 Tanger over the Buck Bantam 284?
The 284 Bantam doesn’t have a pocket clip but it does have a nice lanyard hole, they have also thumb studs for both left and right handed and the kickback is mid handle lock back which makes opening the knife with that thumb stud easier than say the Buck 112 wheee the lock back goes nearly all the way down the handle and it’s more convenient to close the blade.
It seems like to me the Buck Bantam 284 is a better user friendly knife to operate than the Buck 112 Ranger.

I have a full size Crooked River with normal man hands. I find the crossbar lock hard to actuate with such a large handled knife. my bugout and full size griptillian are much easier to use. The problem with the big handle is that I usually put the end of the handle into my palm to to give myself leverage with my fingers to pull back the crossbar axis lock. With the Crooked River the knife is too big to brace into my palm and I can't get leverage.

Hey DCA - I’m on a quest to find the most fidgety folder possible BUT it has to be compliant with Canadian laws… No button locks, no axis or its variants, no automatics, no assisted… Best I could find so far is Buck’s Trunk, which I can flick open with lots of practice… Anything better out there? I know - not actual legal advice - just inspiration!
Loved you in Stranger Things - thanks!

What would you recommend, for a Made in USA, small "key chain" knife? under 2in closed, closer to 1.75in would be even better, with a lanyard hole, to attach to a key chain.

Can you suggest a finger safe edc folder and complimentary fixed blade to cover the task of field dressing animals, big and small? $400 combined budget. Thank you for your fun and informative videos.

I did not get the kitchen knife I wanted for Christmas.
Looking for a prep knife with a hand-filling grip, crowned spine, and stainless steel.
Mostly for cutting pork and chicken meats in to smaller pieces and cutting vegetables. Thanks and Happy New Year to you and Thomas!

Okay, here's a question. I've got a Benchmade black series folder that I've had for a couple of decades. It's a big brute, 9-1/4" overall, 4" D2 half serrated blade. These days I mostly use it for cutting twine on hay bales with the serrated edge. The twine is tough stuff, multi-strand nylon under high tension. But I've noticed that stabbing the blade into a tight bale to bring the serrations into play takes the edge off of the rest of the D2 blade. Would any of the more modern steels stand up better for this? I haven't seen a half serrated edge recently, guess they are out of favor. Oh, and I'm a lefty!

David, Ive been looking for a lightweight, fixed blade knife for backpacking. I’d like about 3.5-4” drop point blade shaped like the one one the Benchmade Bugout or the ZT Sinkevich 0450. Ideally, the knife would have a full, skeletonized tang to maximize strength and minimize weight and handle that would be comfortable for large hands. I’d love for it to have a convex grind for a very sharp strong edge that can be maintained with a light strop and compound. I can’t find what I really want-I’d buy a bugout if they had stronger handles. I’ll accept more weight to get a knife I can depend on. Finally, I’d value a tough steel like 3V or maybe Cruwear. Are you aware of anyone making a knife like this?

I like SpyderCo knives, but their pocket clips are weak. I break them. The clips on the Buck Knives are far superior. I carry a 726 mini Spitfire. That would be my recommendation over the 112 slim for clip in pocket carry, but I love the 112 as well.
