    Franz Stigler explained in on of the interviews, that his former Squadron Leader told every Pilot, that if he will ever gets aware that one of his Pilots shoots at Parachutes, he will shoot the one himself. Stigler saw the hardly flying B-17 as their Parachute the get out alive

    • @daedalron
      @daedalron Рік тому +3

      Yes, that's kind of a chain of unlikely events that saved the B-17 that day. If the guns hadn't been frozen, they would probably have shot at Stigler when they saw him, and he would have shot back and shot down the B17.
      But given that the B17 was damaged so badly AND that it couldn't fight back, that's what made Stigler think of the bomber as a "parachute" and pushed him to not only not shoot them down, but even escort them so that they could cross the anti-aircraft guns without being shot down.

    It is a real story. They didn’t take down the bomber even when ordered to because it was retreating, heavily damaged and as mentioned the guns were inoperative so it was no threat. It would have been like shooting an unarmed man. Instead he led them back out of their airspace.

    Sabaton has reminded me of what I miss about the old metal from the 80s and early 90s. Back then CNN was the only 24 hr news channel and it was a baby only a few yrs old, and there were only 32 cable channels on tv. Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Iron Maidan often wrote songs about stuff they read about or saw in the news. They didnt go WAY deep into the stories. But they gave you an overview of the top the song was about. One of my faves is TANK MAN. On CNN while they were showing the Tiananmen Square Massacre. A man saw three tanks coming up the street and he stood in the road blocking the tank and the ones behind it. The tank tried to go around the man but he stepped to the side again blocking the tank. A few months later I was listening to the new Anthrax album Persistence of Time and a song called "One Mans Stand" reminded me of TANK MAN (the guy that blocked the tanks). A few months later I was reading a Metal Edge magazine the guitarist of Anthrax confirmed that the song was indeed about Tank Man. I'm a history buff so I loved the fact that many metal songs were based on actual events. This was lost for a long time. Good to see Sabaton bringing it back.

    Good reaction my friend...I have seen your reactions of Dimash, the best male singer of the world...The passion and dedication when interpreting a song can only be compared with the person who has influenced him to sing leaving everything on stage: His idol, the queen, the incomparable Lara Fabian...Lara is the best female singer and performer of the world...She is a light lyric soprano with a great vocal range and incredible breath control, which is one of the things that Dimash admires the most about Lara...She speaks 5 languages and sings like in 12 languages....That's why she is the inspiration for Dimash and several singers around the world...You can see on UA-cam covers of her songs made by singers of the stature of: Dimash, Floor Jansen, Morissette Amon, Gabriel Henrique, Katrina Velarde, Cakra Khan and others...Please react to her songs, all masterpieces, in LIVE versions, because Lara is more impressive when she sings live, so you can see why she is the idol of Dimash...Try to do it in this order and almost all songs are from the same Lara’s concert “From Lara With Love” in Montreal 1999, one of her best works: 1) Je Suis Malade (Singing in French)...2) Caruso (Singing in Italian)...3) Je T'AIME (2002 Live version in Paris Singing in French)...4) Perdere L'Amore (1999 Live version Singing in Italian)...5) Adagio (1999 Live version singing in english)...6) Broken Vow (1999 Live version singing in English)...7) You are Not From Here (1999 Live version singing in English)...8) Quédate (1999 Live version singing in Spanish)....9) Ti Amo Cosi (2019 Live version Singing a trío with Dimash and Aida Garifullina)....Thank you.

    Stigler felt something was off when he came up behind the bomber, and the tail gunner wasn't shooting at him. As he came closer, he saw the gunner slumped over and the bloody gunner's compartment. The only guns that were working in Ye Olde Pub was the ball turret, and Stigler maintained position above where those could aim. Coming up on the bomber's right side, he got a clear view into the fuselage and saw the wounded crew. Brown, focused on flying the crippled bomber, didn't notice Stigler at first. When he did, he closed his eyes, hoping it was a hallucination, and then looked again. The German fighter was still there, and Brown felt a pit in his stomach. During the flight, Stigler tried to signal Brown to turn North for neutral Sweden, but Brown refused and continued for England.
    One of Stigler's prior squadron leaders in North Africa told them "If I see or hear any of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself." Seeing the bomber barely keeping together, Stigler equated it to a parachute and just couldn't shoot it. Knowing the bomber still had to cross the Atlantic Wall, with some of the best AA gunners the Wehrmacht had, Stigler knew the bomber would be destroyed. Flying alongside the Pub, Stigler gambled on the ground crews to recognize one of their fighters and not shoot. While rare, there was a Luftwaffe wing that operated captured American and British aircraft that had to crash/emergency land in occupied territory. So seeing the fighter escorting, it was assumed that was what was going on.

    Also for emotional live audience participation, try En livstid i krig, live from Gothenburg 2020 (A life time of war). Also anything from that tour is great both audio and video and an unusual camera angle. You're on stage with the band looking out to the audience. Active duty Air Force NCO here. Very early in training we're introduced to the Law of Armed Conflict, which is an overview of what you can and can't legally do in war. This includes a discussion of "lawful" vs. "unlawful" targets. Someone that is "hors de combat"--French for "out of combat," i.e, incapacitated or incapable of posing a threat--is an unlawful target. The fact that Ye Olde Pub was full of holes and limping back to base would probably meet this definition. Long story short, attacking an unlawful target constitutes a war crime and could result in criminal prosecution under international law and/or military law. That said, I don't think these laws were nearly as codified in the 40's as they are today, but even in war people can act out of a basic sense of decency. Some of the principles of international law include Honor (fight with a certain degree of fairness--wearing enemy uniforms to trick them is illegal), Proportionality (you don't get to carpet bomb a whole city just because one dude shot a gun at you), Humanity (don't cause unnecessary suffering), and Distinction (only attack valid targets that contribute to the enemy's war effort--a factory making tanks is a valid target, but a residential area is not).
    Since you talked about "codes," I refer you in particular to this passage about the principle of Honor:
    "Honor has been vital to the development of the law of war, which was preceded by warriors’ codes of ethical behavior. U.S. military canons of personal conduct continue to emphasize the importance of honor as a core value. Honor as a core value and other ethical norms continue to be vital as a medium for the implementation of the law of war. Honor has also been called chivalry. Chivalry is often associated with a specific historical context-a code of behavior for knights in Europe during the Middle Ages. Rather than refer to this specific context, the term honor is used in this manual to indicate more clearly that the law of war principle of honor draws from warriors’ codes from a variety of cultures and time periods."
    -DoD Law of War Manual para. 2.6.1 dod.defense.gov/Portals/1/Documents/pubs/DoD%20Law%20of%20War%20Manual%20-%20June%202015%20Updated%20Dec%202016.pdf?ver=2016-12-13-172036-190

    This story is both true, but during one of the shows after this song was made, the grandson of the german fighter heard this and brought it up to his grandma, who said this was the story of her father. They ended up getting tickets and going to a show

    I know you don't always do long form content but if you like WWII or airplane stories there is a GREAT documentary about a group of WWII pilots after the war directed by Steven Spielberg's daughter "Above & Beyond"

    For me as a German, im so thankfull for People like Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown, because our Goverment will Teach us Germans that every German in the Years betweet 1930 and 1945 was a Nazi. Im thankfull that German Soldiers like Franz Stigler who sayd to his fellow Pilots in his Squadron, "If i see someone of you shooting an Enemy Pilot on a Parachute, unable to fight back, killing them, i swear you i will shot you down!" , show the Enemy that not all People in Germany are or were Bastards and only have to fight for the wrong Side.

    Even if Germany was ruled by terrorists and madmen.. There were still real Germans with a heart. Like Stauffenberg or Franz Stigler. It doesn't matter which country.. All countries have done shit like Russia and the USA or Germany.. But as a German, I love you as human brothers.
