This story is truly history.
The last Night Witch died in 2017.
And in case you are wondering, the Commissar went out looking for the crash sites because of Soviet military protocols. The Soviet military had the protocol that only those confirmed KIA, Killed In Action, was to be given any earned awards and medals. If a soldier or airman was MIA, Missing In Action, the Soviet military could not be sure if the person in question was dead, had defected, or deserted. So military awards and medals were denied those who were MIA.
The Commissar who actually found the crash sites not only made sure her girls got every medal and award they earned, she, at the same time, created one of the most accurate records and stories of World War II.
And for their time, the 588th was unique in the world, because there were few, if any, all-women combat units, let alone combat air units. They fought with the men, and earned every commendation they received. And it is because of their bravery fighting against the Nazi war machine that the Night Witches, the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, will always have my respect, and my admiration. And I'm a 40 year-old man who is a military veteran myself.

I must say, it gives me the feels seeing you watch this with your daughters. It's so important for young girls to know they're not limited by anything as far as what they do with their lives. I'm no war advocate, but the Night Witches deserve to be admired by anyone who knows their story.
I shown this animation (with Russian subs and some explanations) to my younger daughter. She was 13 at moment, and was too sceptical: "I'm too mature to watch the cartoons for children"
At the end of animation she was wiping the tears

I'd recommend that you watch "The Christmas Truce" by Sabaton. It's a very touching song
To pput the thing about 23 of the members of the regiment getting the title of "Hero of the Sowjet Union" a bit perspective: Only 29 women were rewarded with it during WWII.

Isn't it funny how the UK and USA absolutely refused to allow women to take an active frontline role in WW2, yet there were _so many_ women _demanding_ they be allowed to take the fight to the Germans that Russia went "you know what? Sure, we'll allow it. Show us what you've got, ladies". And _BOY_ did those badass ladies show the world - and more importantly the Germans - their determination, grit and bravery!! They showed that actually, perhaps there really _is_ a place for women to take a more active role in defending ones country. Especially in situations like WW2 where it was an everything-or-nothing situation. Where you either won or you lost your country, your freedoms, your way of life. Everything. It makes sense when you think of it - why exclude _half_ of your potential fighting force simply because they are female? If you do and the men lose, do you really think the women left at home will somehow have a good time? The enemy doesn't care if you're male or female, you'll be treated horribly no matter what, so you might as well not give your country's defense a huge handicap right off the bat.

Though this video does a good job in presenting the story, it relies too much on viewers ability to evaluate the events in their historical context and the way narration is set makes people miss on important details of it every time (I mean, almost every reactor fells for them), creating a false overall impression.
For example, stome of those misleading phrases are "the least skilled women are placed", "largely ridiculed by Soviet men", "given men's uniforms", "boots all of the same size", "the equipment they were given was woefully out of date" and "not allowed to fly a Victory Parade" alltogether paints a very grim picture like if they were purposefully mistreated, believing they are useless and die soon, so no need to provide them with valuable assets. But if you know the context, the picture couldn't be more different.
First of all, Soviet society provided equal rights for all people, no matter their race, nation or gender, resulting women allowed to almost any historically men's professions, so female pilots in civil aviation in the late 30s(!) wasn't something uncommon, with most common plane they were using was Po-2. I think I don't need to emphasize that that such level of civil rights was unprecedented by world standards of its time, so no surprise Soviet men, especially in military, had some troubles adapting the new mindset, and more out of curiosity and awkwardness, they made harmless (as it seemed to them) jokes and comments to the girls, with no real intention to insult or humiliate most of the time.
Second, the very fact women were allowed into ranks speaks against the implication of disrespect - all-women regiments were formed by suggestion of Maria Raskova (an air force sensor lieutenant, hero of the Soviet Union) and approved personally by Stalin, allowing female volunteer pilots to join the military.
Third, there were two more all women regiments formed - 586 fighter regiment and 587 bomber squadrons, so those women who had the required skills and reflexes joined them and operated the modern planes. And here we came to the equipment issue - first thing to notice, that Soviet military in general had no wide uniform size range and boots in particular was ONLY of one size (which every soldier had to compensate it with a footcloths), so needless to say that military just wasn't ready for women inflow, which required if not special uniforms, but at least the very small sized ones.
Then the planes - as I've mentioned, not every female pilot was applied to the main air force, but those who didn't were still a trained Po-2 pilots, so they were provided an opportunity to fight on a planes they're familiar with and a task they can handle - night bombings were carried out not to destroy targets (though they were still kinda successful in this regard, considering circumstances), but to harras enemy forces, depriving them from sleep, and under given conditions it was safe enough for those girls to fly such missions (23 women and 28 planes for 23 672 sorties is VERY low casualty rate). Those who say those girls should've been given a better planes just don't realize that it would've been a sure way to get them killed, taking a valuable equipment with them - you always would use not the best tools you have, but those that fit the task best.
Not allowing them to fly a Victory Parade was a safety and protocol issue - all the participating planes should maintain same speed and pacing, and as you might remember from the video, the maximum speed of Po-2 was below the stall speed of the most planes, so even if they would've joined last, they still had to make their approach to the formation in advance, which creates a potential collision danger over the city. And, again, giving them better planes, as some suggest, not only defeats the purpose of them being on the parade, but also an another recipe for disaster - you can't just sit and fly next generation plane and there is no talk of flying it in formation.
Don't get me wrong, it still took a lot of courage and effort for those young girls to carry out night combat missions, especially in winter times, but it's not like they were left on their own to survive against the odds - the were given a fair support to get the particular job done.
Fun fact: The second German airplane attacking them is actually not a fighter. That is a bomber.
