I wanted to create this short video to really emphasize that grass-fed beef is not the same as grass-finished beef. Grass-finished beef vs. grass-fed beef (grain-finished beef) Grass-finished beef:
• 0 grains
• All grass
• Takes 30 months Grain-finished beef:
• 150 days GMO grains
• Takes between 10-14 months
• Digestive gas (10x more acid in their intestines and less fermentation)
Just because something says it’s grass-fed does not mean it’s grass-finished. If it doesn’t say it’s grass-finished, then it’s grain-finished. Organic also does not mean grass-fed or grass-finished.
Organic means:
• No pesticides
• No hormones
• No antibiotics

If you live in the UK like me, the farms don’t advertise grass finished. Instead they advertise as ‘100% grass fed’ or ‘100% pasture fed’, this is grass finished so don’t worry.
Thanks for that. I was wondering if it applied to the uk different standards and all.
Where do you get grass fed beef in the uk
All beef in the UK is pasture fed.
We dont generally feed our livestock grain.
@@zororat
All beef is grassfed, it's 100% reared on pasture.
Are you sure, this is a shock to me, so why do the supermarkets not state on the labels pasture fed
I raise cattle as part of my living and have been in and know people in both sides of the spectrum. Grass fed and Grain fed. So I have here’d people talk about this and get it so wrong.
It is very refreshing to see someone get this pretty close to right I can tell that you have done your research.
Thanks for sharing I appreciate your videos.

What a bummer in my whole country there's no grass finished at all
Did you find any grass fed meat in Israel?
We need more truth tellers like Dr Berg in the world! ♥️🙏🏻
I literally just talked about this one hour ago and you answered my question on whether organic grass fed is as clean as finished. Thank you Dr. Berg!
As long as you caught that it's completely different.
K Digiacomo, I did. Thank you ☺️
@@lisak1476 - Good deal, just because it can get confused sometimes. I played that part twice because it kinda caught me up there for a second.
@@lisak1476 - Nothing negative meant by that at all.
Too many marketing lies grass fed can also mean grass pellets and not the same. Know the farm!
Okay, so this leads me to some questions:
1) is grass-fed beef that's not grass finished any different/better ultimately than not grass-fed beef?
2) does grass-fed beef still mean, however, that the cows were treated humanely (pasture raised)?
3) is organic beef better than grass-fed (if grass finished is not signified)?
4) will grass-finished beef always say it is such on the package?
Thank you so much, Dr. Berg! You are such a trail-blazing superstar! Love and light to you and yours!
@@Kube_Dog Haha I'm pretty aware these days, believe me. oftentimes I wish i wasn't. ignorance is bliss and all that. at any rate, just trying to navigate as best as humanly possible via the choices available.
@@nancyfahey7518 thank you for your answers. not clear on some of them, though. for #1, are you saying grass-fed IS better than NOT grass-fed if its NOT grass-finished? this Q isn't asking about grass "finished", only grass-fed (not finished) vs not grass-fed.
And with #3, does this mean grass-fed are shot up w all that crap too and thus, organic is better no matter what? Thanks!
Whats funny is that I've NEVER even seen grass finished meat.. not even at whole foods 🤔
Maybe I need to keep a better eye out for it because I promise I've never even seen it.. I'd like to see if I can afford it though.
Exactly...I also have never seen grass-finished beef at any grocery stores. Only grass-fed.
EDIT: It was pointed out to me that Strauss beef is grass-finished if your store carries that brand.
www.publix.com/pd/strauss-free-raised-beef-grass-fed-ground-85-lean15-fat/RIO-PCI-186107
And there is a labelling loophole. Maize is considered a plant of the grass family and is legally labelled as grass-fed. They grind up the old dried-up corn stalks into a mulch, which often turns moldy from the enviroment because it is stored in giant containers that aren't water proof (rain).
Kyla Siler they have it at Whole Foods here in Portland.
@@nancyfahey7518 Thank you. I've purchased Strauss beef from Publix also. I didn't recall it being labeled grass-finished. But I looked on their website and I can see on the package label that "grass finished" is in smaller print at the top.

I had thought about this grass fed/grass finished issue the same way as described here. One local seller of grass fed beef told me that the USDA requires them to be fed grass totally, from birth to butcher with NO GRAINS whatsoever in their diets and they have a way to test the meat to be certain that the standard has been upheld. The younger couple who had purchased the farm three years before I spoke with them at the local farmer's market, told me that this had been their instruction in order to pass that hurdle to get USDA certification. So apparently USDA grass fed does mean grass finished as well. Who knew? I'm not sure I trust our government to maintain those standards where there is BIG business involved. I suspect very large companies get by with things that aren't "kosher", so to speak. My trust is shattered thanks to finding out the unethical things that have gone on with the FDA and Monsanto, etc. I still shy away from 'grass fed' if it is a big corporate brand, even if it has the USDA certification. But if you find local farmers that are selling grass fed beef that don't add the grass finished to their labels, but do have the USDA certification, I would trust that. Plus you can ask them directly as opposed to large corporations. I also had asked them if they sold organic produce as well. They explained that while they did grow their crops organically, they could not get the USDA certification for organic-ness :) until the land had been free of any chemicals for 5 years. I thought that was interesting to note also.
If local farmers don’t label their meat as grass-finished so that means it is not grass-finished. As simple as that.
@@danielbroomhall8882 If they are labeled grass fed and have the USDA license they are grass finished because that is the USDA requirement. If they are not licensed through the USDA then it's anyone's guess as to what has really gone on. But two of our local farmers that I've met at farmers markets have told me the same requirements, independently, and also told me that they get spot inspections from USDA representatives to make sure that there are no feed lots present and that the only food source is pasture grass or hay. So the Wisconsin reps working under the USDA are serious about the restrictions. Oh, and the label is for USDA grass fed, probably because that is the most commonly recognized name. Most people wouldn't have a clue what grass finished meant if they weren't into following keto and other healthy food lifestyles is concerned. If it's not USDA approved then grass fed most likely means most of their lives have been corn and grain fed.
As a cow calf farmer I need to correct your conclusions, beef breeds will reach 1200 to 1500 lbs live by 12 to 16 months of age. The average beef calf spends the first 205 days of its life on pasture with the cow.(grass)Normally it is just the last 6 to 10 weeks that grain (barley in Canada, corn in US) is included in the animals diet in order to marble the fat through the meat. Dairy breeds are quiet different in that no matter how much grain they are fed the meat marbles very little, in fact like some humans the fat from grains accumulates in the organs and inner body cavity, for this reason they can take longer to finish, and do get the distinction of being called grass fed finish, at an older age.
I do share your concerns with modern agriculture, however it is at least disingenuous to suggest that there is a way of avoiding, GMO, herbicides, insecticides, or any of the poisons your neighbouring farmer is using.
🏆
Without that grain were talking about wild meat flavor too which no one loves tbh . I tolerated it for years as my husband is a Hunter. I'm dying to eat meat with fats that aren't repulsive and I got my wish this year with two black Angus heffers in my pasture being finished out with grain. Hope I don't die 😁
Good choice of breeds, bred for beef. Cattle unlike humans are ruminants and can readily digest grass and grass seeds. The point I was trying to make, a barb wire fence will not stop Bees from spreading GMO s to your crops or antibiotic resistant disease.@@reneeodayok859
This varies greatly between countries.
The use of gmos and hormones, also how the cows and other ruminants are fed by default.
So you basically need to research how your own country does its farming and where your meat comes from.
Or just go to a local farmers market and speak to your farmer, the quality will be better no matter.
So after a year of researching grain finished vs grass finished I’ve decided to go back to grain finished and here is why. First the increase in omega 3 fatty acid in grass finished are insignificant to what I can get in a can of sardines. Grass finished has a much “gamier” flavor to it. I like it but my wife did not. The price on grass finished is substantially more compared to grain finished. I can get an organically raised side of beef locally that is grain finished. To me it’s just not worth it to focus on getting grass finished.
Very important distinction. Thanks, Dr Berg!
Important. Lots and lots of deception out there
Wowwww!!! Thank you so much for explaining this concept to us. That may explain WHY I’ve been having digestive issues because of the meat not being grasses finished 🤔
No problem. Happy to share this info.
How on earth do you find grocery stores that label their meat this way?! In my town, you can choose between pork and beef and that's the only information they give you.
One big difference is that grass fed and finished is a higher Omega 3 ratio but the corn fed/finished meat is higher Omega 6 ratio. The average ratio of omega6:omega3 in grass fed beef is 1.53:1. In grain fed beef, this ratio jumps all the way up to 7.65:1.
So, what if the package says 100% grass fed? Will it then never have been fed any grains, even at the finishing stage?
So the question is, if it's not grass finished is it worth buying?
tbonesteak unless you’re making dr berg money eat the grass fed and be happy 😊
@@chrish1695 How? The local stores don't tell you how the cow was fed. It's beef and that's all they tell you.
Dr. Berg, can you talk about Carrot Finished? What's the difference is it better than Grass Finished?
No! Too many carrots are high in sugar and gives the cows diabetes and you'll consume their cortisol/insulin.
@@Kube_Dog Yep lol
Grass finished beef seems to be best quality and most difficult to find for purchase.
If both grass fed beef and non grass fed beef are fed GMO grain, should we pay extra for grass fed beef?
What about when a company says “ 100 percent grass fed” versus “ grass fed” only?
Thank you for explaining this. I always buy organic, & most beef is grass fed here in the UK, but their fed hay & silage indoors in the Winter. I'm going to check out if Lamb & Pork is to.🤗 Thanks again for this very important information, & take care of yourself to. ❤🙂🐶
we grain and grass with are own grown grass and grain. so the beef cattle doesn't get large bones you pay for more beef not bones taste great

Go into the woods with a rifle, kill a wild animal, deer, elk whatever you prefer, gut it, carry it out, take it home ,skin it and hang it to drain blood, quarter it up, rest the meat a few days , cut every single piece of fat off cause it makes the meat taste bad, cut to your liking, grind for hours for burger, place in sealed packaging and boom. Nothing to it 😉

Never seen a label that says grass finished at any market - including a local farm raised market .
Since most meat corporations, like most corporations, lie, cheat, and exaggerate whenever they can... I'm wondering if there is a USDA, FDA or lab test that can possibly identify the difference in any test on a beef meat sample between
"grass fed" and "grass finished." I doubt it.
I worked in the meat and dairy food industry for years, and the things I have seen... well, let's just say were not a pretty sight.

It really doesn't matter. All US beef is mostly raised by independent ranchers (corps call them "producers." The ranchers lie, the corps lie, and the prices go up. "Sure it's grass fed and grass finished..." (fingers crossed.)
I saw a video with a farmer and he said you can always tell grass fed beef, the fat looks yellow'ish. Grain fed beef has white fat.
Remember get meat that doesn't get fed antibiotics and hormones.
Dr. Berg ~ If there is a lot of red liquid from the ground beef, is that a sign of a coloring additive? I did finally find '100% Grass Fed, Non-GMO, Organic' Ground Beef, but it doesn't say Grass Finished.
100% grass fed is grass finished. See American Grassfed Association standards. The red is "heme." It's natural.
@@CarbageMan That's what my sister told me. She used to work in a German meet market. I was wondering if Dr. Berg had any input. Thanks for the confirmation.
Didn't you already do this video? 🤔
I don't think in my country anyone can get meat which is not grain-fed
Grass fed can mean seeds/grains right? And we all pay more because it's stamped [certified grass fed] ! A butcher I met today said everything Mr Berg says here! I'm actually craving quality aged grass finished AAA Angus steak, or Kobe..but it's hard on the pocketbook 😮

Didn't know! 😯 but thank you. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Dr. Berg thank you for this info. I would really like to know more.
He's got plenty of videos on this subject.
Does it make a difference if the label said “100% Grass-Fed?” Thank you.
Beware, there is a labelling loophole where grassfed label means fed corn stalks, because the maize plant = grass. These maize stalks (dry, old and moldy GMO and mixed with candy wrappers and whatnot for roughage) can legally be labelled as 'grassfed'. No joke, its true, did my research.
Lilly Pod ~ Hi, do you have a source? I'm wondering if this has something to do with CODEX.
I just wrote an alarming article saying that even if companies claim that they are grass fed, grass finished, organic etc. it doesn’t mean that they actually meet those standards. I usually get my meat which is grass finished from New Zealand and now I’m wondering if what they’re claiming is true..? If anybody has any information other than this please let me know I would really appreciate it!
Wow! No kidding! I had no idea about this... thanks for the info💜
Dr Berg is the best doctor, I switched to Keto and Fasting after his videos, now I’m learning more about more organic and grass fed meat
we don't find those in Europe
Whole Foods beef has no antibiotics / growth hormones ... not sure about the pesticides used for the food for the animals as it could be natural ones , so you don’t necessarily need to buy fully grass fed to receive those benefits..
Also grass fed seems to cook faster and taste grainier (imagine that , cow eats less grains and has a more grainy texture!) so I tend to stay away from it for the latter reason.
Although I do hate the soy content in non grass fed beef , but I stay away from soy in every other facet of my diet so I think it will be fine for now until I can accustom to grass fed beef , both taste wise and wallet wise .
I have never seen "grass finished" on any meat label.
Does anyone know where I can find it?

Ive rarely seen it, in small specialty butcher shops. And it is considerably more money. Probably why it isnt as widely available 🤷🏾♀️

Are there any meat companies that are not only grass fed and grass finished but are also USDA, 100% organic.
It's difficult to find grass finish
All the more reason to support your local farmer! I’ve been warning people of the mislabeling too. If you live in the South Bay in Los Angeles, check out buyranchdirect.com. They supply grass fed AND finished beef. Yes, it’s expensive but you are what you eat. I buy all my meat from them at the farmers market in Torrance and boy does high quality make a BIG difference in taste. You’ll never go back to conventional, grocery store meat
Bought some Australian grain fed sirloin steaks yesterday (I'm fairly certain you Americans call that a Strip Steak.)
Now as a Brit im used to grass fed beef but thought I'd give it a go - it was flavourless... Utterly devoid of any flavour at all.
In my opinion grass fed is far superior.
Yes, get the grass-fed only.
Dr. Berg please please please, can you explain into one of your videos why alcohol cravings appears in the keto diet. What about 100% grass fed, that means finished im pretty sure???
As usual, the term organic gets misued. Organic doesn't mean that there aren't any pesticides or fertilizers used, it means that SYNTHETIC pesticides/fertilizers were not used.
If grass fed grass finished isn't an option, should I just stay away from beef altogether?

You didn't mention the omega fatty acid profile differences...
Which is the most important part.
Actually, that's not the most important part. Beef fat has very very little omega FA's. It's mostly all monounsaturated and saturated fat. The most important part is its overall nutrient content. Especially its fat soluble vitamins.
Is it legal to use OGM food in the USA? I am Italian and here it is forbidden by law for both farm animals and humans...
Thank you Dr berg for all health education, I will be starting grass finished meat soon! I have a question about pasture raised vs organic pasture raised. Are they different? I eat eggs from vital farm, it is pasture raised but there is an organic version, and I wonder if the extra $2 is worth it or am I just paying for the organic label?
Know what's even more difficult?...finding organic/grass-fed/finished meat.
Must be nice to live in areas that have this stuff readily available.
i just treat food as poison now. and as with poison, don't overdose and you should survive. so i just make sure to eat a little of everything. even different waters.
My local butcher only does grass fed but organic grain finished for 45-60 days out for marbling, says that only 10% of grass fed taste good at all. What should I do?
I can find lots of suppliers of grass finished beef locally and have a regular go to supplier at the local farmers market - I never checked whether it was organic or not though. The biggest problem I have is finding organic free range pasture raised poultry. I can find a lot of “free-range” chicken at organic butchers but it is not pasture raised. Ironically I have no problem with regards to finding organic eggs from pasture raised chickens. Is it just me or am I being a bit too pedantic in trying to find pasture raised organic free-range chicken? Same goes for pork, the food labels in the supermarkets for ‘free-range’ seem to take on many different meanings?
Great video :-)
Grass finished / fed and organic should be the norm. It's what existed 50 years ago and it was the only way. It should get back to that and both the farmer and the customer should be help for that (and not paying overpriced pieces of meat at the shop).
So grass feed and organic if you wish to get best quality.
I raise grass finished beef. But, I supplement with grain and protein. The fact that they are free range gives me tremendous lean meat yields. The exercise builds more muscle and less fat.

Is onions and garlic okay to eat in keton diet?
I make my salad using tomato, carrots, onions, lettuce, cucumber, and olive oil. Is that good or I need to change my salad components?
yes all good; but 30 tears ago we tried to go toward the grass finish (about 50 of us). sounds good...alas the idea lasted only 3 years. the feedlots not wanting to lose customers and potential income came up with the idea to redefine their feeding. corn is a grass thus they are grass-finished. we gave up, true we could have marketed to yuppie base (with lots of money and no real knowledge) at a price to realize our costs. we were ranchers, not tradesmen. we could not make a living raising cattle, slaughtering in a way as to sell the meat (cost 3x or 4x as much in federal compliances), those and coddle the education of our customers
Are grass finished animals happier?
Dr. Berg, I'm assuming you would approve of someone eating deer meat? I live in Pennsylvania and I have brothers who hunt and will give me some of the deer steaks. I can only assume that the deer have eaten all stuff from the mountains, though during this time of the year, they come down to the valley for mating season and many deer are seen in the farmers' fields, grazing on the dried-up corn stalks and such, which I know wouldn't be good.
Does "100% grass fed" mean the beef is grass finished?
Yes. 100% GF or GF/grass finished is good.
why are you showing photos of dairy cows? shouldn't you be showing actual beef cows? and 30 mths is the cut off due to any beef older requires a test for mad cow. losing all cuts with spine ie T-Bone

Back when I had goats, I was in the feed store. While I was there, this lady came in and asked if they had non gmo or organic feed. All cattle are grass fed until it is time to finish them for butcher. At that time a choice is made to either finish on a grain based diet or finish on a grass type diet. We raise grass finished beef in Wyoming. They have never had hormone implants or any type of grain and are finished ready to process in 18 months. It depends on genetics and what typed of forage they are grazing.

Is grass-fed non-gmo grain finished okay? That’s all I can find near me
Do you recommend eating grain fed every day?
There are cattle that will finish on grass at 10 months, especially if they are still nursing there mother. These cattle have been selected for early puberty, at puberty marbling starts in cattle. Perhaps you should say that beef is like buying wine. Allot to know and very nuanced so much so that lack of knowledge can lead to information that seems contradictory.
With the jersey and hereford breeds I have seen 4 month old heifers get pregnant or the mother get bred by he own calf.
