      Grain or grass-fed may only have marginal impacts on the health benefits. Regardless of whether the beef was grain fed or grass fed, beef is still high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Some folks may dispute cholesterol's role in heart disease, but if a new study funded by beef producers suddenly pops up challenging decades of other studies with thousands of papers covering hundreds of thousands of participants, you can be sure something fishy is going on with the outlier.
      For the sake of health, I recommend not eating as much meat. When you do, make it count, but let's not kid ourselves: eating meat without restraint is not healthy, either for your own health or for the planet.

    When you're used to grain fed beef, then grass fed tastes gamey. However, when you are used to grass fed beef, then grain fed tastes uber bland. Having lived in the USA for most of my life, I loved grain fed steak. Then, I moved to Ireland and started eating (local) grass fed beef and fell in love with the real taste of beef. Back in the states now, grain fed beef lacks flavor. Maybe try that comparison from someone living in a country that only eats grass fed beef and see what they think of grain fed.

      Surely cows wouldn't be eating grain in their natural environment, so makes sense to me that grass fed is better. I guess people get used to certain tastes though. For example some people prefer farmed rather than wild salmon.

      Mr LaPan At the time I was growing up all beef was grass fed as a matter of fact, all the food was also organic. We didn't have these corporate farms. Most people don't even know how food is really suppose to taste. Its a shame, the fast food we considered "junk" back in the day is todays organic whole foods smh.

    • @LaPanIAm_
      @LaPanIAm_ 5 років тому +14

      @@djxbangoo It depends where you get your 'wild' salmon from. When I lived in Ireland (SW coast) the local, wild salmon was AMAZING. Way better than any farmed salmon by miles. That being said, some farmed salmon has improved since they've stopped feeding them (see if this sounds familiar) corn and switched over to actual small fish instead.

    This tells me that you both prefer the flavor you grew up on. I am in my 70’s and grew up on grass fed. To me, the grass fed has a much better flavor than the grain fed. Before I discovered the availability of the grass fed, I wondered why the beef tasted so poor. I had noticed the paler color and the blander taste in ordinary supermarket beef. Now that I have grass fed beef, I am loving having that great flavor back.

    Growing up, I lived on a small 15 acre farm. My dad loved to do all kinds of meat experiments. One time we had a calf we let have all the ground corn he wanted (we called it ""free feed") from the time he was weaned until time he was butchered. That was truly "grain fed"...ha ha! My dad also had a walk in cooler where that beef was dry aged as a whole carcass for several weeks. At the time (a teenager) I didn't fully appreciate the fantastic beef I got to eat, but now in my mid fifties, I would love to try these things again.

      We have beautiful grass fed rib eyes come from Victoria state. Victoria is bit colder, more rains and has got huge healthy green lands. In culinary school we used to do tests and right grain fed is more tender but grass fed has got stronger beefy flavour
      Everyone at school preferred grass fed.
      From this video, I think grass fed beef depends on region I guess.

    How grass-fed beef tastes is how beef is meant to taste, while the grain-fed is what people are more used to. So, the grass-fed beef will taste a little off. I personally think conventional beef tastes bland compared to grass-fed. Flavor preference is personal, of course. Regarding tenderness, maybe grass-fed needs to be cooked longer to achieve the same tenderness.

    The size of the ribeye has very little to do with feed, it is genetic and related to individual Breed muscling.
    Dehydrated Alfalfa pellets are considered grass and it takes much longer to completely finish a beef on grass. The size may indicate the grass fed was younger.
    You need to track down a grass/grain combination fed steer. We butchered a 2 year old Jersey steer we fed a mix of a grain and rich summer pasture here on our farm in Kentucky.
    Jersey are a dairy breed and are unique as they marble very well on grass and they tend to have a more yellow fat. Even grain fed. The fat is unbelievably rich tasting. The Jersey cows produce extremely high butterfat milk and it seems there is a correlation to how they convert feed to butterfat and body fat.

    Hey Guga, I’m doing a Koji Rice experiment on 4 Grass Fed/Finished ribeyes tomorrow. They will have “aged” around 64 hours total. Cook will be at 129F for 2 hours with a 1 hour pre-seasoning. I’m hoping to use the longer cook time in order to increase tenderness. I choose grass fed/finished meat for its superior Omega-3 Profile and health benefits.

  • @adambecker7990
    @adambecker7990 3 роки тому +4

    Hey there. I enjoy watching your videos. I wanted to chime in to help explain the health differences a little better which you wont see on the labels. So it may appear that grass fed red meat has similar fat ratios as grain fed meat but the fat profiles are different. Grain-fed red meats have a much healthier fat profile breakdown. Meat and milk of grass-fed red meat is significantly higher in omega-3 fatty acids than the meat and milk of grain-fed which has higher levels of omega-6. Grass-fed beef consistently contains a higher proportion of stearic acid a type of saturated fat, which even the mainstream scientific community acknowledges does not raise blood cholesterol levels. Grain-fed beef has much higher levels of palmitic acid, and myristic acid which are saturated fats known to raise cholesterol. Grass-fed beef also has much higher levels of CLA which exhibits potent antioxidant activity, and research indicates that CLA might be protective against heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Hope this explains the difference a little better health wise.

    Great video! In Australia we mix the grass/grain fed - so we often have beef that is raised on grain and finished in the last month on grass - that way you get the tenderness of the grain and the tastiness of the grass - which I think you determined in today's video - you can't have one or the other, but a blend .... oh YEAH!! :)

    Well obviously you are going to choose what you've been used to eating for the last 20 years as opposed to something that you haven't been. Grass fed costs substantially more because of the cost in raising the cow vs cheaper feed used.
    We've been breed by mass production to accept grain fed as beef. Is it healthier, no. But very few things in this world that are healthy taste delicious, that's why we have so many fast food restaurants in the world!

    • @snoweh1
      @snoweh1 3 роки тому

      I find grass finished to be very delicious. Of course processed foods are delicious too, but is it worth the health risks? Not to me. I'd understand if the grass finished beef was bland and tasteless, but it's not at all. For example the meat I can buy at my supermarket is grain fed. It is objectively worse in every sense. Flavour, texture etc. The breed, farm, processing and so on all affects the end product. Even from cow to cow raised in the same pasture. It's a difficult comparison to make because there are too many variables.

    I love your vids but I am looking at two grain fed animals in this vid. The only difference in the animal is age. Both are grain fed. I can tell that because I am a farmer and the fat in a grass fed animal is just off school bus yellow. Its the way the grass fed effects the taste, and actually gives a much firmer meat due to less fat marbling in the meat. The competition of the two is good but really need to go to the source of your meat. As a dairy farmer I love your support of my industry, even though its just the beef side of things.

      Folks are just in too big a hurry to butcher. Grass fed can be beautifully marbled, if the bovine is allowed to finish growing! They then put all that grass into marbling. I raise Highlands...you have to wait minimum 3 years. In Scotland they butcher at 4-7+ years. Fantastic beef!! Folks i know just butchered a 20 year old Highland cow. Best beef they ever ate, they said.

    I've been on a lookout for beef that is full of strong beefy flavour and aroma. Generally not suitable for steaks but great for gravy and stews. Wonder if grassfed would fit the bill. So far most of what I can find is too sweet and light in flavour. That what I'd really like to know from this video.
    Also would slightly higher temp and/or time for grassfed would make it more tender?

      I don't think so. I think that the majority of their diet is probably plant matter, but most ruminants will eat small animals if given the chance. Cows have been observed going after birds (successfully) and deer prey on mice and other small animals. Don't let the vegans get to you. The lines between carnivore and herbivore are not clearly defined.
