The arrival of the electric era arguably challenged BMW more than any other mass market brand.
BMW is a company famous for its drivetrains; it's a brand that differentiates itself from the competition by offering a unique combination of chassis dynamics, handling and characterful engines.
But electric drivetrains all feel remarkably similar to drive, and on top of that, there's no unique engine note or exhaust note to further separate a BMW from its competitors.
BMW needed to embrace electricity and find a way to imbue the brand's DNA into electric sports cars.
For our video journalist, Ciro De Siena, the i4 M50 is their best effort yet.
We hope you enjoy this video and do let us know what you think in the comments below.

I love the consistency and quality of this channel. One of the best car review channels on UA-cam.
Thank you so much
True
Aah man I would buy this car. A bit too expensive for a daily. I can’t wait for Hyundai and likes to bring in their iterations. Great review as always
One of the best i4 m50 reviews I have ever watched. Great content ❤️. Keep them reviews coming.
We're so glad to hear this. Thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching
I love this channel our own in SA🇿🇦. I really like the camera work and the world class professionalism .
Thank you for putting a big smile on our faces! We're glad you're enjoying the content. Thank you for your support
I truly haven't enjoyed any electric car video as much as this one. Love it!
That's so great to hear, thank you!
The camera work and the rolling sound effect... BEST CAR REVIEW I've ever seen for this vehicle... Beautiful 😍👌🏾
Well this made us smile! Thank you so much
What I would love to see is seeing you charge on those 50-150kW chargers because people think there are no chargers at all in SA. Please next time do some charging experience in SA, maybe drive from JHB to CPT or Polokwane to CPT just to show that it is possible, not just saying it. And I wonder why BMW didn’t give us i4 eDrive40 since it has better range especially for a market that hasn’t developed yet.
Having owned manual transmission cars for over 50 years, I can answer absolutely, yes. No question some steering feel is lost w/o rack & pinion steering. Simply goes with the electronic reality. The car simply doesn't need gears, although a highway overdrive might extend range. Using brake regeneration - B mode - for one pedal driving yields the same feeling of oneness that you get in a manual. Handling in the BMW autocross was superb. In a few years when a "bespoke" model comes out & battery tech advances, the next generation will be 500+ pounds lighter and even better.
Amazing visuals here
great show!
Always look forward to these reviews. It’s not so much about the cars, Ciro is a delightful personality. ☕️
That is true. Wish he was my boss instead of the screaming mad arsehole that I work for. ☺
You are utterly brilliant at reviewing cars...👌
very good review................always a pleasure to watch your reviews
BMW i4 M50 is just brilliant🥰
Ow wow that drone shot
Ah man I just love how you guys review cars. The camera work, the content and ofcourse a bit of Ciro humour just makes it one of the best on UA-cam. Great work guys!
And how much Range did you achieve on a single charge. I see there was 13kms remaining (hope you managed to get home lol) at one point... And how effective is the charging with "Regen-On"?
Thanks so much for the kind words! Makes all the hard work worth it. Yes we did make it back to the office, but it was right! Apologies it was remiss of me not to mention the range. BMW claims 416-521km on the WLTP cycle. Thank you for your support of our channel :)
Great review Ciro. The i4 seems like an incredible daily. Electric is certainly getting there.
Probably the best review you guys made
Thank you so much, we're glad you enjoyed it!
Very impressive charging!!!
M power for sure, nice interview bud
Beautiful car, great review and camera work... But just where is that road? Beautiful scenery. Someone, let me know, I want to go and take a drive there??
Looks really good
Cool Golf Cart....
Have you driven the Model 3 Performance? If so, how do the 2 compare?
looks interesting enough
Pretty amazing 🤩
Can u review new hyundai atos 2022
They need more budget car reviews
@@ShadowLady1 yes
Great car
I want one soooooo bad after watching this!!!
Would be interesting to compare it with any BMW 20d model...
Can't wait for the electric 5 series
Nice. What about service plans, warranty information and how frequent software upgrades would be done. Are those options BMW work into their EV ranges?
Another video 😆
A question about electric vehicles in general, does charging the battery between capacities, affect the battery at all? So charging from 20% to 50%, or 30% to 80% or 55% to 65%?
what's that in front of the car at 10:16 ?
Do you also subscribe to your heated seats?
First EV that made me think, maybe this would be a good buy. Great review Ciro.
Thank you kindly
We feel the i4 m40 should be the car for us
I agree with you 100% since it has more range which would ease our minds in SA where charging infrastructure may be in its early stages.
what road is this looks like a nice sunday morning run type of road beautiful
Motor trend said it had everything but a soul it was fast handled but was lacking a connection
I will stick to a Parallel Hybrid. If BMW Reliability and Resale are Poor as it is with Fully Blown Internal Combustion Engine, Imagine the Sell-By on these Electric Computers. Great Vid.
It’s a pity that the i8 was canned so soon, I really would have loved to see this drivetrain in that as opposed to what was in there since it would look like the future and also have the tech to boot. To prove that you can’t please everyone, I feel this one could do with more visual interest given the quantum leap from the ICE.
Go and check Rich Rebuilds on UA-cam and see the struggles he has with his i8 and dealerships are refusing to fix his car because it’s costly and I think “over engineered” or something like that.
One thing I Beleive BMW should have added as a option for this car is to be able to turn off the front motors, so that when traveling on the open road your range could double using only 1 motor, and 200kw is more than enough for the rear motor alone.
When driving in comfort or eco mode it will only use the rear motor, it will only engage the rear motor when using a lot of power.
In sport and sport boost it will have both motors engaged
What's the range?

Cool
The problem with electric cars is the prices and lack of engine noise (load shedding of course) but apart from that, good cars and good for the environment.
Ciro, where does the engine sound comes from then 🤔
At 10:14 you should've done mission impossible stunt and drove under to pass it.
I saw one just before it was delivered to the owner a Eastview BMW
The advancement of these electric BMWs make me lose my hope for an M1 ever being revived. Great car, the i4, though. Love it.
What's is the range on this one .
Apologies it was remiss of me not to mention the range. BMW claims 416-521km on the WLTP cycle.
Can't wait to test drive one
10:15 what is that?
Good review. I don't know if we will ever get the feeling of commotion engine powered car from electric vehicle partly because we talking different technology all together. Even the great car manufactures will struggle to infuse their identity in the current and future era of automotive industry. Maybe we the consumers may have to adjust.
For those who can't afford this.. Ioniq 6 or 6 N
Can't wait for the Ioniq 6 to be available
Load shedding ... ? 😕
So this is not a trick well done BMW
When new generation of batteries arrives, these cars will look like dinosaurs...
no guys. i mean come on.... the quality of your videos is somebthinyg else, I run a photography companny anyd iv bteeny sibtbtinyg here bthinygkinyg abtoubt bthe btnype of gear nyou are using, am impressed . keep ibt up

huh?
Talk about the i4 range?
Apologies it was remiss of me not to mention the range. BMW claims 416-521km on the WLTP cycle.
8 hours to charge full and what range can one get from a full charge?
Apologies it was remiss of me not to mention the range. BMW claims 416-521km on the WLTP cycle.
@@CiroDeSiena thanks, that's not bad at all
I imagine the way we handle mileage will change. I don’t think most will drive their EV to near empty as we do with ICE vehicles. You could plug-in your vehicle every night (even if not necessary) and perhaps never actually have the battery below 30%-50%. Perhaps you plug-in at your destination too.
What about the range?
Apologies it was remiss of me not to mention the range. BMW claims 416-521km on the WLTP cycle.
Cars will end up being like phones. They all do the same thing difference is the camera. With cars it will be the range.
Some data seems wrong. Charging at 350 kW ?! I thought it was 200. Also The 0-60 is The same as The m4 🤔
I just double checked and it seems I did get everything correct. Perhaps you are thinking of the RWD M4? The xDrive M4 is quicker
The screen looks stuck on, zero effort to integrate it into the dash.
What's the range of this car?
Apologies it was remiss of me not to mention the range. BMW claims 416-521km on the WLTP cycle.
@@CiroDeSiena thanks
Why does the car sound like it’s gonna teleport or is it just me
They had to play music over every drive by cause the car makes no sound. Lol.
What's the estimated range on this car??,surely it can't even do a 600km on a full single charge..
Apologies that we did not include it in the video. BMW's official figure is 416-521km on the WLTP test cycle. Thanks for watching!
Quick math over 10 Yr period is it cheaper to own than petrol version????
It won't last 10 years. EVs don't last long-term nearly as long as petrol cars because batteries permanently expire. It'll probably only last you 5 years until you need a battery replacement, at which point it's cheaper to buy a brand new car.
BMW offers an 8 year warranty on their batteries in most markets. After 8 years ANY BMW is worthless. Ask me, I have sold a 6 year old 330d F30. BMW not even intersted to make an offer on their own cars once they are out of warranty.
Yes. Electric version has less parts to maintain and less parts to end up being broken especially by the engine. You do also save alot on brakes if you use One pedal driving allowing your brakes to fade slower compared to a petrol car. Plus the obvious is that its costs less to refill since electricity is cheaper and more accessible than petrol and also the car can bring back more charge when braking or going downhill when your not accelerating
😎😎😎
Ahhhhhh man, I really thought there would be a lot more " Load Shedding " related comments 🤔🤭 ?!
I'm an eternal optimist :)
@@CiroDeSiena I live in Boskruin Jhb ... been sitting , without electricity for three days 😬
How does these cars benefit Joe Average... I don't think my tiny little inverter going to charge this sucker 🤔
@4:33 into the video clip
Ciro De Siena: "McLaren is not really a practical car. Not really space for 5 adults in there."
Mafia BOSS: "Not even if you chop them up?"
Could SA even have electric cars we can't even keep the power on with load shedding
The mentioned quick charge times are a lie.
That’s a sprayer not a combine
That grill looks like a weber attachment
You didn't talk about range thought 😔
Yes sorry about that. BMW official figure is 416-512km on the WLTP test cycle.
Ei but that aerodynamic sound, sounds not bliss. better set it to quite
Fastest EV up the pass
Great car, love it. Unfortunately too many cavemen in SA who will point out any negative thing they can think of to keep their archaic oil guzzlers.
0-100% in 30min using a 150kw charger? Am I so behind on new car specs or were those numbers a tad off?
It's's an 81kWh battery, so charging at 150kW would mean a 0-100% charge in just over half an hour.
@@CiroDeSiena It doesn't charge at 150kw throughout the 0-100%? It tapers off depending on temp and capacity. That's why I'm so confused 😕. I am open to correction as I have been avoiding EV reviews coz there aren't any affordable EV's in RSA.
@@raaz1zn Yes that is a good point. In a shorter video like this its' difficult to cover all the nuances. I think I should have said that it's better for the battery to charge to 80%, and then it should charge at the full 150kW. I think in the relatively short term we will see a big shake up of the EV market in SA. They are definitely way to expensive for the average South African motorist but I think (and hope!) that that will change.
Not yet sold on EV's
Im watching a clip of a car I won't be able to afford
It sounds like a spaceship though. I'm not a fan of electric cars
noooo
Realising that kWh/h is kW...
Ah yes, an EV in SA when load shedding is only going to get worse and worse and worse...
Imagine Eskom that already doesn't have enough electricity to go around, trying to support everyone having an EV as well 😂
Alot of people who can afford these cars have solar at home and with a dc --> dc charger this will be little problem :)
@@nicholasdevilliers4005 yeah... It'll take you approximately 4 years to charge this thing via solar energy. You still have to entirely rely on Eskom
That's not the fault of BMW, blame the dumb assholes in the government.
@@yissibiiyte I have a 14kw solar system at home 😉Many who can afford a 1.6mil car would be able to do the same at home or probably have the same/similar
You are too negative Bro
You can`t keep the lights on in your house but want an electric car...?
Only in South Africa...
who is going to be able to buy these cars when the world's economy is being destroyed?
Im not so sure about putting an M badge on electric vehicle, does not feel right
...WAIT... how much?! lol wtf
Can we all just acknowledge it's coal powered?
Depends where you live
I guess you figured that few people who watch your video will ever drive this car so you can just say whatever. The rear seat space is not great according to Munro, the boot is a small 10 cubic meters, just over half what a Model 3 has, and the handling sucks. Cannot wait for the Moose Test with the M50, the 40 failed spectacularly, taking out cones on each side of the track.
Where do you get your info from? The i4 has 470l in the boot, vs 425l in TM3. With 10 cubic meters it would be a small van.. Have you driven the i4?
Get serious, fanboy.
@@ronnyt5795 the M50 has ten square feet of cargo, Model 3 close to 20. You might have heard of Google, use it to look this up yourself.
So we stopped talking about the BMW grill. We've all accepted it now ?
Beautiful car though honestly. The consistency beautiful the exterior and interior is just wow .
What an ugly grill! Puts me off the car completely.
M440i XDrive please, at R1,3mil. Not only has it quick refuel times, and sounds a million times better (the i4 sounds terrible), you'll still get a decent trade-in value after a while. (EV's depreciate faster than ICE)
Can’t wait for the Ionic 6 to be released.. still find the grille of these super ugly
No matter how journalists try sell electric cars. They are still boring.
Rubbish boring electic cars. I'll rather buy a e36 or e46 M3 over this overpriced nonsense.
