There's actually a colorblind mode in the settings, but it doesn't do anything other than add jarate and mad milk icons over the heads of people because the discolouration can be hard to see. I'm not colorblind but this option is just generally good to use imo.
i am personally dealing with my colorblindness alot while playing tf2 and that mixed in with my rather old monitor, makes it sometimes really hard to tell wich player im meant to shoot thats why i play medic with the crossbow
purple and gold team colors are discernable with almost every type of color blindness if you can find a addon for it (except the one shown in the video where you can only see black and white because i dont think theres much you can do about it)
I'm a bit colorblind and, while it's nothing severe, I do sometimes fail to recognize what team someone is on, especially at distance, with brief glances, or if there's something in the way, despite over 2000 hours in the game. A heavy shooting at me from a distance is sometimes hard to tell because the muzzle flashes and the distance make it hard to see the color. People covered in jarate are also nearly impossible for me to tell which team they're on
I think it also depends on the class you're playing. If you played medic, spy, or maybe even sniper it might be a lot harder than if you were say, pyro.
Monicrom color bilndness, definitely among the rarest color blindness type. But it is definitely possible too tell the difference between "blue" and "red" with monicrome color blindes, and would be comparably easyer for someone who has lived with monicrome color blindness too tell the difference compared too someone who isnt color blind. And if it is a little too hard then its not like there isn't any mods too help with that.
I also think monochrome color blindness makes team recognition a lot easier than most types of colorblindness since it completely eliminates the confusion of seeing 2 similar shades of the same color and not being sure if its due to your blindness or if the outfit is colored with paint, especially if you see multiple pairs of seemingly the same color but each pair may or may not be on your team. With monochrome sight you stop relying on sight and use your HUD automatically
NA comp scout Yz50 was colourblind and was one of the best scouts of his era back in the day. in his fragvids you would sometimes see him round a corner and shoot a teammate first before realizing who the enemy players were. context and the targetID hud element does a lot to help you distinguish players
0:58 If that ain't an introduction, nothing is. *Thunder mountain babeeee!* Playing tf2 colorblind was that chaos tf2 didn't need, but damn, did *we* need it.
This is why the tranquilizer isnt in the game, but it should be. I like the chaos spy creates not knowing who is on whos side, an colorblind mode is basically another method of that same madness.
With scout you at least have some time to figure out who's the enemy and who isn't. Imagine trying to land a backstab on somebody as spy when you can't tell if they're on the same team as you. (Or, accidentally disguising as the wrong team)
The sentry target sound has been ingrained into my brain so much that I'm funny convinced if I heard it in real life I'd flick my head around and panic
the original team colors were chosen to be distinguishable when turned greyscale, but the artstyle shift with cosmetics threw that out the window. that said, i'm sure there's some monitor or post-processing option you can play with to boost the brightness or contrast of certain colors.
TF2's colours are so good I could even see them when colour blind. I was watching the kill feed and I could tell which team was which because the red was darker and the blu was lighter.
I just want to once again congratulate you on the insanely well put together video! Everything from animation to transitions and sound is just awesome!
There's an RTD effect called Monochromia. It lasts for like, a minute I believe and any time I get it I 100% struggle with telling who is on what team. Though I also play on a 50-player class wars server, and if both teams are the same class that also messes me up on occasion.
I like the occasional flashes of color. But it got the video editor in me wondering how you did that? If you recorded the footage in black and white then… well it would be possible to color it afterward but it would take much more painstaking work than those brief segments would be worth imo. If I had to guess I’d estimate that you set your monitor to black and white, so OBS would pick up the footage in full color and you can desaturate it while editing? Really curious if that’s the route you went or if you found another creative way to get that effect
The easy option is the answer haha, I changed my monitor settings which didn't effect how OBS recorded it which gave me more freedom to experiment with it.
If you put TF2 photo in other colorblind types (ex red green) you can still distinguish teams just fine. Making red vs blue the best colorway because not many people have that.
I'm not colour blind, but I find it ableist that only one type of colour blindness - and even the rarest kind - is being covered on the video. I would've liked to see dichromacy and red-green colour blindness for example.
One thing about this challenge, try it on a game mode like koth where everyone is all over the map unlike payload where people hold the cart much more frequently. I think that would be interesting
mat_color_projection color blind mode has 9 modes. And you can set each one into each class config files. So when you switch to scout you can be mat_color_projection 1 and 9 for spy. I once had each class as there own number. Useful? No. Funny? To me, yes.
When I saw it in my recommended I thought it would be another annoying discussion about team recognition and I was pleasantly surprised. Really good video!
One of m y greatest memories of TF2 was finding a setting on my GPU that removed color saturation (I wasn't aware of the mat_color_projection command). So I just went into a Community CP_Orange map with cpu bots. Things were going... along but then someone else joined. I was able to beat them but then I guess they started using paid VIP benefits for infinite jumps, extra helath, extra damage, and the like but I was still able to beat him. At some point, he just leaves and I see someone else going "Lol, he rage quit." and the entire server disconnects and I don't see it on the server browser. Thankfully, I was recording the session thinking it'd be an interesting idea. And then I saw some chat notification I ignored before: the person I fought wasn't a paid VIP, it was the server owner! I curb stomped someone that was using every possible VIP bonus, maybe ever beyond that, and he still lost. To someone that couldn't even tell who was on the same team as themself! Among the best memories I have of TF2.
