Formula 1's Europe Problem

  • For so long, Europe dominated the Formula 1 calendar but as time goes on, the sport is drifting further and further away from the continent. With the sport focusing on more races in the United States, and the endless cash available in the Middle East, European Formula 1 Grand Prix are facing shorter contract extensions and uncertain futures.

U can’t compare the USA to Europe, yeah similar size but USA is just 1 country 1 culture pretty much, all of Europe is different multiple countries people and cultures. Here's the thing though, if the 'classics' don't produce good racing anymore, do they deserve to be on the grid. Barcelona has been on the grid since 1991, for 30+ years, yet very few individuals are mourning its departure coming in 2026/7, because the circuit hasn't been good for a long time now. You have also seen the argument with Monaco in recent years, how modern F1 cars just aren't suited for the track anymore. It's not the circuit's fault, its just like Brands Hatch or Watkins Glenn its just not F1 compatible anymore, the cars are too big, and smaller series like Formula 3 or Formula E are still able to produce good racing on the track.

Silverstone was almost chopped a few years ago, and it's fate still lies in the balance. Suzuka was abandoned in favour of Fuji for a good few years, Spa had been reportedly in the balance over the last few years. Also Hockenheim and Nürburgring GP, both classic F1 and grade 1 FIA circuits have been abandoned by F1.
F1 management will go where the money is. It will cut traditional tracks where the owners either won't or can't pay the fee to host F1. This is why there are so many awful street circuits these days.

As an American who has been watching since 2019, this topic is realllly interesting to me. I don't think people understand how big the US is and how bad our transportation infrastructure is. I live on the north east coast, and if I wanted to go to COTA to watch a race I'd need to fly or drive over 1,600 miles (~2700km) to to do. Miami wouldn't be as bad that'd only be 1200 miles (~1900km). So even tho there are multiple races in the US, practically speaking, they may as well be in a different countries. The Mexican Grand Prix & COTA are closer than COTA & Miami.
With that being said, the idea of replacing historic/iconic dedicated tracks to make more room for tracks in other countries is ridiculous. Not having a race in Germany or France is crazy. Getting rid of Spa would be crazy. The thing that really got me into F1 was going back and learning about the history of the sport. I'm sure this is due to the massive bias of being an American, but in my view, if F1 wants to chase the money but still stay true to the sport they could drop races from countries with terrible human rights records, bring back racing to Germany & France, and add another track in the US.
For the US tracks, and all the newer tracks in general, I think they should be dedicated racing tracks (not street circuits), and they could rotate the years where each track is used to keep the calendar from bloating while also serving multiple regions of the world. It'll never happen, but bringing back Watkins Glen would be awesome lol
I also think the regulations play a big roll in why the racing quality has deteriorated. I'm sure the engineers can figure out a way to make the cars safe while still reducing size/weight. But if that doesn't happen the problem of boring races will continue to persist.
Money moves the world I get that, but neglecting Europe would just be a shame. It'll be interesting to see how things play out over the next decade.
I think most fans would agree that people just want exciting races, it doesn't really matter where.

@@JRoo97 TBF the Canadian market is much smaller than US due to population. Like Montreal and Vancouver would cover most of Canada's Population as far as races go. Australia could have much more but again not many population centers in the center of the country. As far as the US goes, if you want to cover the nation in a density half that of europe, you'd add another track to like the US South East (carolinas, georgia perhaps) A track to the North East, Track to the Mid West, and a track probably somewhere close to the pacific northwest, although a Vancouver race could kill 2 birds with one stone there IMO. China would have more tracks but its all about market, Zhou has helped F1's popularity in China but with him likely being dropped, the market shrinks. One race in China makes sense because of the market, although I wish we could have more tracks in asia, like bring back india at least, markets though again. The truth is that F1 not having these tracks in these areas are due to its historic euro-centricity. Great tracks in europe, don't get me wrong, but they're still so many in a small area. As an American, we only need 1 or 2 F1 races. Over saturation will drive fans away. Ask NASCAR and its 36 race calendar, where they visit some tracks twice a year, or tracks are too close in proximity to each other. F1 needs to remain a spectacle, and having Austin and another track (Vegas at the moment) would be ideal. There is the idea floating around of Chicago getting the 4th US date. I don’t like that. I think giving Indianapolis another go would be more appropriate, not just for the fans, but for the drivers. It’s a historic track known the world over. To win there makes you immortal. The place can also pack 350,000 fans, and the track is much better suited now for F1 than it was in 2005. I think we can all agree, we don’t want another street race.

BUT when the racing is terrible, and the country in question is one people are not okay with racing in. It can be a disaster (see Sochi and Abu Dubai).

Formula 1 is not deliberately changing. It's merely responding to an economic reality. Americans generally spend more on sporting events per capita than Europeans. If the people who manage F1 understand the American market, and how governments justify spending on sporting events, they can leverage US sports fans. Also, the amount of money that the developing world is willing to spend to market their country and society to global businesses and tourists, outweighs what Europeans (and Americans) are willing to spend at the gate.
F1 is not making an attempt to go anywhere in particular. It's just going where it's wanted. If European governments were willing to substantially increase their payments, F1 would go right back to Europe.

It got widened and got a few good cornors like the “kombocht” which has an angle the further you go outside similar to what you see in American oval races. Drivers really enjoy those tracks as they challenge their skills.

I would like it if the tracks are more properly dispersed over the USA. A track around Chicago, around Seattle, around Boston would balance it.
I think 3 races in one country is a bit overbearing judging by the fact that China has 1 and India had 1 (India is a massive market for motorsports so I don’t know why they are not really tapping into India as much as with the US).
I think the United States should have a rotation of 2 tracks per year. There will always be 2 US GP but the set list will change each year. An F1 race is pretty reliably 2 hours and has no commercials. It really is the only reason that that a tape delay TV sport event can have good ratings here.

Stuff like this is interesting too me but as an American I do not want F1 in my country. The FIA is a plague that kills local series and destroys tracks. Look at the way nascar and F1 both handled their new street circuits. Nascar has had two years of huge successes despite being weather affected and F1 has had 3 failures that are possibly the most boring races of the year in any Motorsport. Even the way they both handle COTA is vastly different with the nascar races sometimes getting out of hand but the fan experience for nascar being universally praised as being better. The FIA thankfully hasn’t invaded to bad because they would kill any home grown racing series like indycar in an instant. It would take the character out of tracks like Sebring, Daytona, Indy, leguna seca, Watkins Glen, and road America. They’d put miles of run off that kills the racing and repave them to be like glass killing the racing even more. F1 as a company and the FIA as a sanctioning body do nothing but choke and harm their series and kill any other that could compete

What tracks in Europe might be considered the next on the chopping block? Hungary? We still have European drivers dominating the sport, are F2, F3, F4, etc. still safe from this massive shift? Are they also starting to trend?
If anyone has thoughts or video recommendations please let me know 🥲

Here are some facts about f1. F1 is a rich people sport, and it will continue to be. If european promoters/tracks dont make enough money they will be out. Plain and simple.

I found F1 in 2018-2019. I have long enjoyed both IndyCar and NASCAR, but mainly for their forays into street tracks and grand prix formats. Watching them drive ovals is ... less than fun. And especially how NASCAR has watered down races with their "stage" nonsense... So when I found F1 and its all grand prix and road courses, well, I was hooked from the get-go. I enjoy the races and even some of the drama associated with the "silly season" drivers market and the constructors battle. Even the fact that the cars are not identical is a plus, gives them some character and allows the engineers to explore different solutions to various problems. I was hopeful that Mercedes would be able to make the zero side-pod concept work just for the variety, but I have also loved watching the recovery of Merc, McClaren and the four-way fight at the top we have this year. Much more fun than seeing who will come in second to Verstappen or Hamilton this week. 🙂 As for expansion: I enjoy COTA, Vegas was OK, and I honestly enjoy watching the race in Miami. I would not be opposed to dropping one or both of Miami and Vegas to see F1 back at Indianapolis for the GP track, though. 🙂

    WRC is more fun.
F1 drivers see few corners, a rally driver sees thousands...

I dont think F1 is moving away from Europe but it is Moving Aways from tradicion: Spa, Monza, france, germany, canada and maybe even Japan do not seam to be the priority anymore...
City circuits in City centers or massive autodromes with massive paddoks are the priority

The popularity of F1 will only last so long in America……I’d give it another 5 years or less.
As for Europe, things are just getting way to expensive there for your average person. Once Verstappen retire , the Dutch GP will go the way of the German GP like when Schumacher retired

Americans love Cars and Racing. F1 has a growing interest with that crowd.

The disrecpect from f1 executives towards their long term fans is crazy! It all started with liberty media who dont care about the history of the sport and its historic sporting venues. Leaving countries like Germany who build this sport up and always choosing money over passion is what real fans hate to see. I personally watched this beautiful sport over 20 years and witnessed some of the most intoxicating battles and victories. When i look at todays cars, tracks this beauty is slowly fading away. When i look at todays slow cars with extrem regulations who all look the same and more and more street circuits in countries and cities with no history and often no human rights than i feel like this is making me sick. And when the hype because of Netflix is finally slowing ending and the revenue starts to drop again they will once again rely on the the timeless circuits where this sport has been growing for so many years and hope that the old true fans come back.

they can race wherever they want. i don't really care the country to race is at. what matters to me is good tracks. some of the tracks introduced in the past ~10 years are.... yea. if that's the quality we can expect then i would rather go back to classics that always produced good races. so, it will depend on track builders if i like it or not.

F1 runs in BIG money, so they seem to go where that is.
The Singapore race was the most boring of the year, and Monaco is similar.
I get that Monaco is iconic - but it sucks as a track.
