Tldr: Leonia, ID (30 min drive from Bonners Ferry) has a super sketchy off-road trail to an old mining town/cemetery and ends with a burnt bridge that you should check out.
A couple of years ago when I was visiting some friends up in Bonners Ferry, we took some dirt road basically from his backyard to the top of a cell tower overlooking the valley. After that, we saw signs that pointed to an old cemetery and an old mining town in the middle of the forest.
So being stupid California boys, my friend and I drove my Subaru Outback (I know, don’t judge) down this old forest road after the cemetery and drove through this nasty sand trap that we couldn’t get back up.
We said, screw it and drive down the rest of the road. After almost sliding off of the road multiple times and being literal inches from body damage due to the narrow trail, we finally emerged next to some railroad tracks across the highway. All we had to do was cross the Kootenay river over a bridge. Unfortunately for us, the bridge had been burnt for five years.
So here we are, stuck next to an active railroad in the middle of the night in a valley known to have grizzlies prowling. So what do we do? We flag down the train and they actually stop for us and we get a ride back! The engineer told us that we were crazy and that in 20 years he hasn’t seen anyone come down that road except coincidentally a few weeks prior, a few old Toyotas had gotten stuck and tried to drive on the tracks to get out.
Anyways, after we got back, we took my buddy’s monster bronco to the sand trap and winched my little city boy Subaru out of the sand trap.
We were the laughing stock of the town for a bit after that, but hey, at least we didn’t get eaten by grizzlies!
