I am buying my first Tacoma tomorrow, and I can't wait to apply some of the budget friendly mods I've watched on your channel. I already have a few places I would like to go in my backyard of Northern Ca.
I grew up, camping, fishing, hiking, boat camping, island camping in the Pacific Northwest. We did all these things out of a little rear wheel drive import car, a borrowed tent and borrowed sleeping bags, a Coleman lantern, and a Coleman stove. We did it that way until the early 80s when we bought a very used pop top camper van that needed a ton of body work. In my day we just called it camping or car camping now it’s Overlanding and requires a $60,000 vehicle plus all the accessories and equipment to go on it. All you really need is food, water shelter, and some form of transportation. Oh, and don’t forget the private chef and the required footage of him preparing food.
I had a similar life experience during that same time period in the Central Utah Region. We didn’t call it over landing-it was the weekend or a week of vacation.
Thank you brother. I see these cars are pretty popular down there. It’s funny every country in the world loves ravs except the US. And they kick ass. No need for all the fancy stuff half the time!
Prado off-road great point. It's almost like these clout chasers have ruined this lifestyle with their poncy ways😡😡😔 Btw I'm always struck by how similar Australia is similar to Zimbabwe and South Africa landscape wise and also lifestyle to an extent. Land Cruisers are very common in Oz and so too southern Africa. The dusty country roads, the big haulage trucks, livestock and wildlife on the road, the heat in the bush etc. the similarities are endless. Lots of ex Rhodesians and South Africans end ended up there I'm currently in UK and it's so different. Landscape, lifestyle etc 😢 Hope one day I can drive across Australia in an old land Cruiser 80 or 100/105 Regards
@@GrumpyTinashe rigs don't need to be expensive and fancy for Instagram clout, our second car is a 2006 T30 Xtrail with a 35mm lift and Cooper AT,s + throttle controller makes a fun and capable offroad unit and a great little go cart onroad. Towed a 1 tonne camper trailer around Tasmania for three weeks like a dream, I get jealous of some of the desert trips I see people doing in SA & Zimbabwe, dream would be to do that series 1 Landrover old school style
I own a first gen Rav4 and I have really enjoyed your video. It gives away the first gen spirit, a recreational vehicle, not a proper off road but very capable though. I use mine in farming and I love it!.
I’m so impressed with you doing this rig! It’s always make me crack up with the $100k rigs people don’t want to get pinstriped. I take a ZJ or a GMT400 Yukon. But, once I was going shooting with a cousin and drove my MB CLK. Slow and picked my lines. Wouldn’t do it again but didn’t hurt anything. Just do it with what you got. Upgrade when you know what you really need. IMHO thanks for the vid!
It’s super rare that I see builds in $100k range. In Michigan/Wisconsin/Minnesota I see a lot of under $7k budget vehicles and they are just as capable and comfortable.
Overlanding has definitely become over commercialized. Great topic for a video! Love it! $2600, 5 speed manual, center locking diff...Go Rav4! The cave was seriously cool. 18:10....great stream bro ha ha! Awesome video guys!
Another great inspirational video brother🙌 You hit so many valid points on this video that are so true if you aren't looking for clout or attention, looking forward to the new build 💪🐐
Exactly, I've been to those overland shows, it's just overblown commercial sales of products we really don't need. I've gone to more places in my 36 years old Toyota 4×2 long bed pick up truck with a simple shell than people with a 75 thousand rig.
I travel all over North America in a full size GMC with an 8' bed and a tall commercial topper, total $7000. Gets tight and slow going sometimes but it always gets there.
Great points, great video. I am almost tired of convincing my buddies that its not about the money you make but the time you spend. I give them a date and a destination and if they make it great, if not I will be making memories with my son that can never be bought.
I picked up a 2003 Jeep WJ 4.0 for 1300. I planned on a lift bumpers the works, so far I've added AT tires and roof rack from a Upull-it. Four HF flood lights and a 9k winch I got at a yard sale. My entire rig was less than a lot of roof tents and I get everywhere everyone else does.
i have a rav 4 and all the dudes in the big rigs make me feel like i shouldn’t bother going anywhere because my cars “not good enough” it was disappointing bc i have set it up for camping, this video made me feel a lot better about the capability of my car!! thank you for this video
I am 1:21 in and, I already enjoy that you acknowladge and, understand you don't need a new expensive rig to do it. and most people overbuild for what they are actually looking to do
Good show , and thanks . Raised in the 70s and 80s ,we had old pickups and I had an old cj 7 jeep . Qnd on the weekends we offroaded , we called it camping and 4x4ing . I have had the privilege of offloading and camping a lot of the US and Alaska. We didn't have exspencive rigs like those overlanders on UA-cam . Like backpacking . My gear is budget gear , I dont have 5k in my backpack gear . Now I'm building a 1995 ram 4x4 , with a campershell , See ya on the trail soon .
I fell in love with SUV camping after one trip. I camp in my 2011 ford edge all the time now. never bought anything expensive for it. Me and my gf love it.
love this man, on youtube overwhelmed with these suburban mall crawlers. I just love authenticity and real adventures that aren't the clout people try to gain.
Im new and just binge watch most of your video for the past days and you've always been positive and happy-go-lucky kind of person, but this video feels like you're mad and moody. hope you're ok man.
Shoot I hope I didn’t come across grumpy…. I have some what of a negative sentiment towards a lot of what’s going on in the hobby so maybe it came out that way
About 15 years ago, i rode up that on a cross bike. Started at a friends house in East Tucson, rode the roads up and around the the north side, and then up and over. I hadn’t ridden much that summer so it was rough as hell. It’s probably the hardest day I’ve ever had. This video has brought back a ton of tough but fulfilling memories
Good video! The wife and I use our 2008 Honda Odyssey, with 7” memory foam mattress and Thule carrier. Got a little pin striping and hit hard on the washed out logging roads in the Canadian Rockies. We always have fun. Even got snowed on during the last 5 day adventure. “Pick your line”
We bought a neglected 2008 CR-V with 144k miles & a blown serpentine belt for $2500. It needed lots of TLC including the serpentine belt, a full 100k-mile service, high pressure power steering line, door sensor, taillight, full cleaning inside & out, etc., but now it's an amazing, reliable rig that our middle son bought from us. Hard to go wrong with a Honda or Toyota.
I love crvs, my favorite is by far the first gens but they only seem to get more reliable. It’s funny what you can find so cheap that people over look. These make great versatile cars and run forever.
I've gotten my base model Honda Fit down multiple 4x4 roads, even if I had to go slower than the Tacomas lol. There's definitely plenty of roads I can't approach, but with a little forethought and 4x4 driving experience, I've gotten that lunchbox on wheels down roads everyone would have told me I would get stuck on. The dream is a truck with a light camper on the back, but for now, I'll get wherever this bean will take me.
Those are sick as hell. Don’t need to worry about being the life out of it either, simple and cheap to fix. Less is more with some rigs, can’t do everything but you can sure have fun trying!
Took my family the back route before and they loved it! Plan on camping one of these days when it gets cooler. Yes, I hate that it gets so crowded at Mt. Lemmon. Do enjoy it when we're able to find a good spot secluded from the rest.
Great video brother, you really showed what these little crossovers are capable of. I bought a 2000 rav4 last year and took it 7000 miles across the US and canada. While I did blow the rear shocks on a washboard road in Banff, the rav made it home in one piece. It's reliable, simple, cheap to care for, and ready for adventure out the gate. If you end up seeing this, link me that emu lift kit!
They’re truly capable little vehicles. I’ve really pushed this thing beyond it’s limit outside of what I’ve posted on this platform and it’s blown my mind. People really sleep on these.
Absolutely gorgeous views, really appreciate what you’re doing. Keep up the great work glad I was able to stumble across your channel. I just got myself a 2018 RAV4 adventure series AWD and I’m looking forward to the great outdoors. That’s my new ride !❤
Thank you! Love hearing from rav subscribers, if you watch any newer videos you’ll notice I also picked up a newer rav. 2019 adventure, love the car as I’m sure you’re loving yours also!
I've always thought that a lot of guys want the most capable rig they can build because they have no confidence in their ability to drive. You touched on this when you spoke of being more careful choosing your line. The cheapest thing to upgrade is your driving ability.
You couldn’t of said that any better, the cheapest thing you can upgrade is driving ability and a smaller less capable vehicle will do that. I’m hoping this idea can spread to more people who watch these videos, with so many newcomers I find it to be really important
I've been looking at first gen Ravs for awhile now. How funny that you got one. I just love the way they look. The manual transmission is definitely the way to go.
@@Whitedogoverland Heck yeah! I've seen a few online that are Toyota 3S-GTE swapped which would be super cool. I think it'd probably be easier and cheaper to throw a simple little turbo Honda B20 engine in it. Plus it'd get all the purists going. 😆I just daydream vehicle builds all day, and this in one of them. Now if only there was a way to do away with the McPherson struts in favor of a-arms. Get some real suspension travel to go with the power.
Just get out with whatever you have! When I first started years back, I started with a Suzuki Forenza Station wagon, it got me everywhere, never broke down, and I abused it! Had lots of fun...
Got a 97 4Runner for $2900 5yrs ago, love it! But now it’s in need of repair because my wife pulled out in front of someone she thought was turning. So it’s gonna be a bit before I get back out! However I’ve always agreed, just get out and just make some memories!
What a bummer… the beautiful thing about this hobby is the only thing that matters is you enjoy what you have, even if your rear bumper is smashed and dragging all the way into camp
Big fan of this video. I agree with your message regarding not needing a super expensive rig and all the bells and whistles to enjoy the outdoors. I think finding clever solutions to maximize your experience is far more enjoyable than spending 100,000 dollars on a camping set up. The idea that you need a overbuilt rig with a $6000 RTT and a stupid Skottle to go camping is preposterous. Keep up the vids and get out here an enjoy your Rav4. Can't go wrong with a Toyota.
Thank you brother. Love seeing more people on board with the realistic approach to overlanding. It’s just car camping in the end. I mean I’m not really a good example my tundra is a bit over the top that’s what I bought the rav to get back to minimalism.
Nice. Love your philosaphy. Weve been camping for a 1000 years. No reason to make it so complicated. Lovin my 98 rav4 std. Very capable and more fun than my 07 taco. Its a beast in the snow. Cheers from Yukon
I'm here for the affordable rig for us poors 😂I want to get out and experience my life, decompress a bit and need some nature! I love going off the beaten track a bit and I couldn't care less about impressing anyone, just need to get there and back safe. Thanks man, I appreciate you for doing this.
Thank you for making this video. People spend so much money on overpriced 4x4s and expensive camping gear and make it seem like you need a lot of money to enjoy overlanding. Poor shaming is a huge turn off and goes against everything overlanding stands for. Enjoying out doors is suppose to be cheap fun not rival 5 star European vacations. I subscribed.
Really good video. I hope it gets a lot of attention. I have been running around Colorado and NM since the late 80's is 2wd silverados. We called it hunting and camping until a minute ago. Like you i trie to let people know that just getting out is the goal and it dosent matter that you get out there in. I recently got back to Tx from Colorado where i did 110 miles off road on my 2000 honda rancher 2wd. Nearly every other vehicle in the back country was a 25k sxs or 75k overland rig. I know i had just as much fun as every other person on the trails. My tent and my honda and days of great fun. I jsut bought an old CJ7 that i plan to take to NM and chloride canyon in lat OCT. so if you guys are up there i hope i run into you.
Maybe we will see you on the trail one day! It’s such a simple concept that’s been over complicated. Just use what you got and get it done. No one cares about what you drive other than yourself, if more people thought like that they could have just as good of a time as we do. I can’t really talk cuz this build is a bit over the top as far as my tundra but the rav takes it back to basics.
I feel ya. I have an 02 Sequoia, the last of the cheap "moderm" Toyota 4x4s, and people are always blown away when they see I've built and welded everything myself on it. All these folks with blank checks and deep pocketbooks muddle this hobby.
Love the content… Simply put “less is more”…No mortgage loan required. Me and my family rock my paid-off 2017 Subaru Crosstrek. ( mods coming) Works well in our Arizona back yard of trails. If we think things will get heavy or crazy offroad, I break out my old school 1stgen 02’ AC cab 4x4 tundra. Never lets me down in the rough crazy stuff. (Well maintained ) Keep on keep’n on with your method of thinking.
Thank you brother. Sounds like you have a similar set up to myself, a cross over for the easy going trips and a tundra for the real stuff. My dad had a first gen tundra he bought brand new and took it to 400k no issues. Solid trucks.
Absolutely agree with your logic. Im still driving a 36 year old stock simple Toyota truck with good A/T tires, non 4×4 just a 4×2 with a shell and i go everywhere!
Interesting take and i share the same tought as you on the ridiculous level which overlanding has reached, its funny getting to a camp spot and enjoying the same view as the guy with the overbuilt rig. I also have a heavy 4x4 (2002 Sequoia) but for two years i went out in a lifted awd rav4, i live in northern baja and i took that little thing all over the place, it really went where it shouldn't, i am interested in looking how that rav4 will end up looking and i bet it will reach all the places you intend to take it.
It takes so little to get out and “overland” or just weekend car camping. There’s not much of a difference between the two anymore. I have a tundra and it’s overkill a lot of the time probably like your sequoia but those rigs are bad ass!
I hope this Rav gets a little lift and bigger tires. Not extreme, but just some more ground clearance. I'm all about driving what you've got and making it work for what you're doing! I love it
Just got some old man emu on it, slightly taller lift and what not. Haven’t been able to do a solid video on it recently but when temps come down I’ll have it back out!
Thank you for the inspiring video, and pep talk. My dream is to go Overlanding with my car, and yes, I have been intimidated by these decked out rigs. Thanks to your video, my mindset now is F it, I'm going to make this a reality! New subscriber
Have an 05 with a sleeping platform I built for me and my girl for going to festivals. Thing is surprisingly capable for what’s essentially a stock minivan with a little more suspension travel. Going to do some minor work on the suspension and maybe different wheels and tires and make a new sleeping platform with storage out of aluminum. other than that it’s good to go for pretty much everything we do. An awning would be pretty dope so we had more dry space when it rains found that out in New Mexico last week!
Just found your channel a few days ago. It's so refreshing and wholesome. Especially using an AWD to overland with. I'm in Australia and I have a Tank300 which would be perfect for those roads. The tank has a 2 litre turbo gasoline engine, 8 speed auto and low range . It would be perfect for these tracks you ride on! Thanks for the great videos, I think it also Inspires people to realise you can go places with an AWD vehicle with some basic improvements. Obviously auto gearboxes are slightly better if one doesn't have low range I would imagine? 😊
Rav 4 for the win. Lived in mine two years. Bed platform a must. Mines snuck up a few valleys its shouldnt have, landcruiser and jeep drivers are in disbelief.... My other ride is a cheaps as, and way more capable isuzu mu, or amigo as yanks had them. Epic fun and value. Out drive many expensive heqvy rigs ❤ fantastic vid and thoughts. ❤
this kind of camping feels more fun than spending a fortune for luxury. I've got a 2007 ranger with a roof top tent and it suits all my needs, although id love to get a rav4 aswell. My biggest glamping thing i do is bring a portable power source for my projector to watch a movie!
It is so much more enjoyable when you don’t have loads of gear to unpack just for an evening at a spot. Less is far more when it comes to this stuff, unless you tend to stay put for a few days.
You bought this low cost car because you could but for me, I am really that poor guy who loves the dirt. Your video is an inspiration and motivation for me to pursue my dream car without breaking the bank! 👍
The whole reason I bought the rav was to highlight its low cost and capabilities for the budget kind of travelers. Glad I could give ya a bit of motivation!
I've owned two. Actually on my second one. Im thinking about a schoolie build since i camp host most seasons and i can't tow a camper with a Rav4. But i can car camp with one and I have before. When i got into car camping, i did it in a 84 S10 Blazer. 😊
This video is inspiring me to take my 98 4Runner out to do the same thing, I’ve been hesitant about it because it’s only a 2WD but it has decent ground clearance, just needs better tires
I used to take my Ford Fiesta up some pretty rough stuff here in Maine. Was replacing suspension parts a little too often but overlanding doesn't have to break the bank.
Awesome video brother. Loving the vibes. It's great to see what a RAV4 is capable of. Also cool how you don't go for name brands. Just be sure the products you purchase are solid so it doesn't hurt you out on the road (obviously). I respect the non pretentious view on this hobby & culture. New subscriber.
Thank you, I try to keep it simple to show newbies it’s not about your gear but your experience. Which doesn’t change much even if you have the best stuff!
Maaaan i dont blame you, id trade off the tundra for this guy too! lol only kidding. Another awesome video with a great meaning behind it. I agree, todays influencers are too much about the next new thing and not about being out doors and using their equipment.
Fortunately I’ve still got the tundra! This rav is just going to get me out to those spots where the full size isn’t necessary. Thanks for watching brother
Pull off the headrest from the front two seats, slide them all the way forward and lay them down all the way. Then lay the two rear seats back. It turns the seats into a bed. Put your foam on top too of you want. Can fit 2 people easy
I'm currently doing a similar build with an old beater Subaru Outback. This is a lot more fun when you're operating within the limitations of building an oddball vehicle that doesn't have a lot of support on the cheap.
@@Whitedogoverland Right? I had to replace my front bearings because whatever clown had last worked on the brakes put the driver's rotor on wrong, and new Timken bearings were like 25 bucks and I did the swap in my driveway with my three year old daughter.
Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV are two of the earliest CUVs out there (barring Suzuki)back when these vehicles were actually meant & engineered to go to the trail head or beyond. And this is when CUV actually meant compact utility vehicle.
Had a 99 RAV4 for years, took it to all kinds of places, lived out of it for two years traveling all around NorCal mountains. I was hard pressed to find places i couldn't take that thing, and it was amazing in the snow. Got myself an 03 Highlander now and I'm looking for a repeat of the same kind of experience. I put a set of falken wildpeak AT3s on it and now i just need to get a basic gear collection together and I'll be on the road again this fall. The best time to get out there is as soon as possible. I'll never understand guys that put $100k into an overland rig only to leave it in a garage in the suburbs.
It’s hard to want to use your vehicle when it’s spotless, brand new and decked out. I’d rather buy old, understand how to fix it when it breaks and beat the tar out of it. But hey we all have our own definition of fun and I couldn’t give a damn what anyone spends their money on! Just not for me
Great video, Mt Lemmon is my go to spot for camping (Tucson native). I have taken my 2017 stock civic to Mt. Bigelow (on the maintained roads), it would be quite a struggle for me to go thru the back entrance. I am a little disappointed that I didn’t see anything new for camping spots. My recommendation if you’ve never been, is to go to Mt. Graham. There are a lot of inaccessible spots there that only off-road capable vehicles can get to. It would be a better test for the budget overland build!
I wish Lemmon was the same as it was 10 years ago, used to be able to take a trip down almost any road and not see anyone. Graham is really nice, not as bad as Lemmon but similar nowadays. It’s pretty flooded with folks the last couple times I was up there over the last year. Thanks for watching and the support!
Thank you for the opening. I grew up in Zimbabwe and rhe white farmers who did this sort of thing did it for fhe love of it and practicality. They had Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrols and other japanese souble cab pick ups etc Now i get imoression its all about show off and as gou rightly said, clout. I am now 50 and want to buy a Land Cruiser 80 or 100 and restore it and deive across Southern Africa. But i cant afford nor justify spending lots of money on most of rhe stuff i see on most videos. I just need a rooftop tent, shower, basic fridge and a powerpack for my gadgets Thanks for making such a video for us who want to do it on the cheap. I wanna see all of Southern Africa with my 50 year old wife. Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, zambia and Lesotho👍💪
@whitedogoverland dude I grew up on that side (San Manuel) and moved a few states away. Thank you for the trip down memory lane! Hunted those hills for years and used to go in that cave as a kid during the summers
The San Pedro and cascabel valley is a spectacular area, especially the galiuros to the east. I grew up hunting this area as well, my first deer came off the back side of the Catalina’s!
@@Whitedogoverland I don’t miss the town, I just miss the life that came with living there. I’ll have to bring my 4Runner back and go off reading those areas again
Had a 1,400 isuzu trooper and did a ton of camping and off-road while I had it. Slow and gutless but with 4 low it was a little goat. Most fun for the least amount of money I've ever had.
Most people don’t think like that. They need the best of the best to even consider going out and doing this. Troopers are bad ass, would love to add one to my stables but I already have one gas hog!
@@Whitedogoverland Just had the 4cyl that's why it was so gutless. Usually got 18mpg with it which I thought was good for an 88. The best part was not caring about scratches or actually using it bouncing the frame off rocks just made us laugh.
I rode that road 3X on my 70cc Panda Trail Rider (CT70 clone) having to lift the bike over the boulders towards the top. I like the less = more approach, Wish more people took it. Like the RAV Nice underdog vehicle choice.
15:00 this. I own the next gen just after that(about $6~8k), and I love it. Sure I could buy the brand new but, I know that just like the fancy rigs, I would not put a 50k investment in the sand and mud as I do with my lovely 2ºgen, and of course, not gonna lie, its always fun to rescue the fancy rig mid-trail with them not beliving it until I get them out hahah
Man you’re exactly right, I just prefer an old beat vehicle that’s plenty capable at a quarter of the budget. People just go wayyy to far for some car camping. All you need is some creature comforts and a dirt road
Crazy to think 10 years ago when I was a kid it was called camping we couldn’t afford to do anything cool so driving into the woods and setting up camp was our “vacation” now all of the city slickers are going crazy over it
I know right. Always reminisce on taking a buddies beat shit car out into the desert, sleeping on cots and drinking myself into oblivion when I was 16.
I'm one of those guys that bought a brand-new vehicle for overlanding and (unfortunately) doesn't go out as often as I'd like. But here's why: parking space. If I had unlimited parking space (and money for insurance) I'd have a practical and comfortable daily driver, a sports car, an offroad truck, something for road trips and towing... but I only have one parking spot. So I need to compromise and a cheap 20+ year old toyota just doesn't cut it for me as a good all-arounder if that were to be the only car I had. So last year I bought a brand-new SUV and that's what I use as a daily, as an "overlander", as my errand-runner etc. It's comfortable, has modern features and great for road trips, and as far as offroad goes it's gotten me to all the camping spots I wanted to so far without issues. I could have kept my old hatchback and bought a beater for offroad instead, I would have spent less on the vehicles, but I would have had to move to a different house or rented parking space somewhere.
Everyone of us has a different circumstance. I have loads of parking, but I don’t make a ton of money so I have a few beaters in my drive way. If you can find yourself a nice new vehicle that gets you where you want to go, keep the build light and simple, not cumbersome, then you have exactly what you need and any more than that sounds like overkill!
Full of great advice and that’s awesome that you are trying to get more people out there. For the love of all things good tho, get good tires. If you do actual trips on something like the Dalton Road in Alaska Chinese tires don’t make it. Your life is worth the extra money it takes to buy actual decent name brand tires. Especially if this is a solo trip
I have always like that 1st Gen RAV4, especially the 2 door model. I do have a 2022 Gladiator that I take out to the trails here in Georgia, its probably overkill for the majority of what I do. I decided to do a semi budget build with a 2005 Grand Cherokee. I have a lot of fun in it because most people who see me on the trails dont think it can make it. Great vehicle, I sub'd to see more stuff like this.
Buying good tires is really about ensuring your own safety and the safety of everybody around you. After all, it's the only physical contact you have with the road. Glad to see you didn't take your own advice of "all [tires] function the same in the end." and bought Toyos.
Im gonna be putting some money in at least offroad tires and wheels on my mazda cx-5 to do some easy trails to start our journey into overlanding but will eventually find a used rig that has 4x4 capabilities to do some more complicated trips where there is less people.
I got RAV4 j 1998 3sfe stock with a left broken spring but still moving 😂..430,000 on clock overhauled he motor at 405,000 everything was still factory std, these cars are very underrated im in africa Swaziland it handles my farm roads with ease🙌
Thank you for this videos. I have needed to kill time this last week and was watching camping videos. The algorithm kept pulling up asmr videos. The creators were using a different tent each time, everything came in a nice, clean, zippered kit. It was all commercial made. I bet folks have $50k in their equipment. Isn’t part of the fun building the set up?
If you aren’t looking for flashy, you found the right channel. I have a clean rig, a beat rig and this little shit box but everyone of them I prefer to build mostly diy and cheap. I’m pretty poor in perspective to most so I don’t buy all the fancy stuff but it truly is more satisfying to build out yourself.
I watched one video where a guy disconnected his sway bars on, what I call an over glorified driveway. He also told some people they would probably need a Jeep or something with 4WD and a good amount of clearance. He was driving on The Georgia Traverse. If you've never heard of it, it has less obstacles than in this video. I drove on roads like this in a Ford Escort when I was younger. It really teaches you how to find the right lines for more technical trails later.
It’s funny to see these incredibly built rigs take on forest service roads. I’m not one to talk with my tundra but that’s why I bought the rav. A lot more realistic for short outings and it really tests the skills.
My son the rav man plain and simple. Short wheel base makes up for a lot of the clearance. Love that hat boo. Another great one son. Your pops. ❤
Thanks dad, this car is great so far!
Just want to encourage people to get out, then complains when all the camping spots are taken. Had to laugh a little.
Haha you are not wrong 5 years ago this place was dead, guess I’m chapped all my old spots are gone
Grew up in Tucson and have never been on that side of the mountain. Going to have to make a trip up there during the week. Great drone work.
This is why i can understand people like 395jnky that doesn't put out his coordinates for the spots he finds. It's like a fisherman holding on to their fishing holes. Gotta respect it. People burning spots sucks! I have a hike i like to do that is popular before but now has gotten over populated to the point people trash the parking lot at the trail head and park in mass blocking the gate rangers need to be able access in case of an emergency. I was almost blocked in my parking spot by someone double parking because the lot is so full you have to park alongside the road leading up to the trail. I hate people. When something gets popular, they can ruin the experience.
I am buying my first Tacoma tomorrow, and I can't wait to apply some of the budget friendly mods I've watched on your channel. I already have a few places I would like to go in my backyard of Northern Ca.
Glad I can provide some ideas! Good luck with your build!
I like the "Run what you brung" attitude. Great drone work. Another real good video.
Thank you brother!
I'm Aus we have a bunch of wankers in $130k 200 series LandCruisers with another $50k in canopies, this stuff is out of control, great rav build😊
And yet they get bogged and wonder why a awd just passed them at Fraser Island
Thank you brother. I see these cars are pretty popular down there. It’s funny every country in the world loves ravs except the US. And they kick ass. No need for all the fancy stuff half the time!
Prado off-road great point. It's almost like these clout chasers have ruined this lifestyle with their poncy ways😡😡😔
Btw I'm always struck by how similar Australia is similar to Zimbabwe and South Africa landscape wise and also lifestyle to an extent.
Land Cruisers are very common in Oz and so too southern Africa. The dusty country roads, the big haulage trucks, livestock and wildlife on the road, the heat in the bush etc. the similarities are endless. Lots of ex Rhodesians and South Africans end ended up there
I'm currently in UK and it's so different. Landscape, lifestyle etc 😢 Hope one day I can drive across Australia in an old land Cruiser 80 or 100/105
Regards
@@GrumpyTinashe rigs don't need to be expensive and fancy for Instagram clout, our second car is a 2006 T30 Xtrail with a 35mm lift and Cooper AT,s + throttle controller makes a fun and capable offroad unit and a great little go cart onroad. Towed a 1 tonne camper trailer around Tasmania for three weeks like a dream, I get jealous of some of the desert trips I see people doing in SA & Zimbabwe, dream would be to do that series 1 Landrover old school style
Those Gen 1 RAV4s are still cool.
Probably the toughest GEN of all RAV4, so far!
They were the right size. Tiny.
That's a second generation Rav 4 isn't it?
I own a first gen Rav4 and I have really enjoyed your video. It gives away the first gen spirit, a recreational vehicle, not a proper off road but very capable though. I use mine in farming and I love it!.
They are absolutely under rated and capable as hell.
Great to hear simply get out with what you have and don't worry about having the best rig. It will be interesting to see your mods on the Rav 4.
That’s all it’s about!
Shoot it drives me nuts to see people dump money and never take their vehicle out. It’s just a little clear coat at the end of the day shitllbuffout!
I figured someone needs to call out the over the top shenanigans! Love this car, so far it’s treating me just right, thanks for watching!
It’s definitely not about how much money you can spend, the fancier the rig, the less you want to take it out and scratch it. Be minimal stay minimal!
There is something to be said for keeping it simple. Plus it can be more fun in a rig that isn't as capable, pushes your skills a little more.
Less is always more. It’s fun not having that 4lo knob and clearence really pushes the skills!
That's what its all about, just go, then keep going! Bring home memories and a hunger for the next adventure.
Keep it simple and don’t over complicate. Not too common for this hobby now!
That’s how it should be! Good stuff!
i have a rav 4 and all the dudes in the big rigs make me feel like i shouldn’t bother going anywhere because my cars “not good enough” it was disappointing bc i have set it up for camping, this video made me feel a lot better about the capability of my car!! thank you for this video
I am 1:21 in and, I already enjoy that you acknowladge and, understand you don't need a new expensive rig to do it. and most people overbuild for what they are actually looking to do
Absolutely.
Keep the videos comin’ 😎✌🏼

I have had the privilege of offloading and camping a lot of the US and Alaska.
We didn't have exspencive rigs like those overlanders on UA-cam . Like backpacking .
My gear is budget gear , I dont have 5k in my backpack gear .
Now I'm building a 1995 ram 4x4 , with a campershell ,
See ya on the trail soon .
Forsure! Gotta keep it real and obtainable for the every day human
Looks like an awesome way to get into overlanding cheaply, and figure everything out. Maybe I can get this to work for me too. Thanks for the video.
Awesome video very well said that you don't need a new or big truck to overland
Thank you 🙏
I've gotten my base model Honda Fit down multiple 4x4 roads, even if I had to go slower than the Tacomas lol.
@@Whitedogoverland I might put some two inch spacers on just to give it a tiny boost but other than that, I'm just going for it lol.
This is awesome, I love the old rav4s. I have a lifted outback that I’ve built out and it’s great and keeps up with all the trucks and jeeps.
Took my family the back route before and they loved it! Plan on camping one of these days when it gets cooler. Yes, I hate that it gets so crowded at Mt. Lemmon. Do enjoy it when we're able to find a good spot secluded from the rest.
Awesome intro to the Rav man! Keep it up! LIKE THE VIDEO PEOPLE😎
Thanks brah, EVERYONE LOCAL GO CHECK OUT SOUTHWEST MOTOR VEHICLE TUCSON AZ
Great video brother, you really showed what these little crossovers are capable of. I bought a 2000 rav4 last year and took it 7000 miles across the US and canada. While I did blow the rear shocks on a washboard road in Banff, the rav made it home in one piece. It's reliable, simple, cheap to care for, and ready for adventure out the gate. If you end up seeing this, link me that emu lift kit!
They’re truly capable little vehicles. I’ve really pushed this thing beyond it’s limit outside of what I’ve posted on this platform and it’s blown my mind. People really sleep on these.
I’ll drop that link, got the kit on Rocky road outfitters!
My friend had a 1998 Rav4 about 12 years ago and boy did it went places!
They are bad ass little rigs!
I love this!!! Real world overlanding and adventure for the "Normie".
Just out being weekendlander not crossing the continent or anything!
I’ve had some of the best outdoor experiences in my 94 ZJ. Doesn’t take much to get out on the road less traveled.
Absolutely not!
@@Whitedogoverland Yes Sir I have seen her out on the trails ! Best of luck 🤞 with that one !
They are awesome, I love the old buggy aesthetic and the retro vibe!
The 2 door ones are even cooler
@@wildmikefilms I like them, they're just so tiny. Harder to find too.
Just get out with whatever you have! When I first started years back, I started with a Suzuki Forenza Station wagon, it got me everywhere, never broke down, and I abused it! Had lots of fun...
Absolutely! That was my message behind this one, use it if you got it!
Love your message. Been following for a bit. Gonna be cool seeing how you build it out.
Thank you, it’s currently getting an engine rebuild then the real build starts!
Ravs are killer, very under rated in the community!
I daily drive one of these. I'm slowly retoring it. Truly, an underrated, versatile vehicle
Super underrated. I didn’t realize what it was capable of until owning one
I'm here for the affordable rig for us poors 😂I want to get out and experience my life, decompress a bit and need some nature! I love going off the beaten track a bit and I couldn't care less about impressing anyone, just need to get there and back safe. Thanks man, I appreciate you for doing this.
Have to show some appreciation for the budget friends. It’s all flash and show these days, but not the reality of what’s going down on the trails!
Love the content…
Simply put “less is more”…No mortgage loan required.
Me and my family rock my paid-off 2017 Subaru Crosstrek. ( mods coming)
Works well in our Arizona back yard of trails.
If we think things will get heavy or crazy offroad, I break out my old school 1stgen 02’ AC cab 4x4 tundra.
Never lets me down in the rough crazy stuff. (Well maintained )
Keep on keep’n on with your method of thinking.
I think the majority are in the same boat, there’s just a small minority with rigs whose payments are similar to a mortgage.
I love it
Another video just popped up after this one and it looks like it got a little higher. Nice!
That was my whole goal for this video. Glad I could push you to do it, just get out and have fun!
@@Whitedogoverland Hell yeah.
They rock, even my new one is great but nothing compared to this old beater. I almost bought an amigo, those are killer!
this kind of camping feels more fun than spending a fortune for luxury.
Damn.....great video just great I like that generation Rav for sure
I’ve waited a long time to find one of these for a project, thanks for watching
Great video!! Love the old Ravs!!
They’re killer rigs! Thanks!
You bought this low cost car because you could but for me, I am really that poor guy who loves the dirt. Your video is an inspiration and motivation for me to pursue my dream car without breaking the bank! 👍

This video is inspiring me to take my 98 4Runner out to do the same thing, I’ve been hesitant about it because it’s only a 2WD but it has decent ground clearance, just needs better tires
Get out there, even if it’s easy grated roads just do it!
I used to take my Ford Fiesta up some pretty rough stuff here in Maine. Was replacing suspension parts a little too often but overlanding doesn't have to break the bank.
Hey they might not be made to do it but who says they can’t!
I put a spacer lift and 33" tires along with a control arm mod on my 2015 Ford Expedition. Looking forward to taking it out for. Some camping.
This motivates me to take my XJ Cherokee out there on some trails!
Hell ya! Do it man, that’s why I put this video out!
It really is, and it’s way cheap, so breaking and bashing doesn’t hurt as bad!
Great video man! and i love the Rav4!!!
Just not for me
Great video man. Sick rav and sick drone shots 🤙
Thank you brother 👊🏼

Haha! Same where I live in East TN. It's just car camping with the most expensive (and often unnecessary) gear.
If you can find yourself a nice new vehicle that gets you where you want to go, keep the build light and simple, not cumbersome, then you have exactly what you need and any more than that sounds like overkill!
i just moved to arizona and cant wait to get out and go overlanding
Heck ya man!
Thank you!
$250 fresh toyos, I buy for the bargain not the brand haven’t been let down in 10 years
Im gonna be putting some money in at least offroad tires and wheels on my mazda cx-5 to do some easy trails to start our journey into overlanding but will eventually find a used rig that has 4x4 capabilities to do some more complicated trips where there is less people.
You really don’t need even 4wd but it’s nice for insurance if you get stuck. The cx5 is a great rig!
I got RAV4 j 1998 3sfe stock with a left broken spring but still moving 😂..430,000 on clock overhauled he motor at 405,000 everything was still factory std, these cars are very underrated im in africa Swaziland it handles my farm roads with ease🙌
That’s impressive! My engine is shot but I still fires up and goes. That’s the beauty of Toyota, driveable even broken.
I got a hyundai tucson 2005 diesel turbo 4x4 really cheap and does the job with just replacing the tires with off road ones
Bad ass!
The first SUV ❤
Nice vid. We have new cars, but I run a 99 f150 out camping.
Thank you!
That rig did awesome !
It sure did!
