Did you already listen to the new album from Porcupine Tree (CLOSURE / CONTINUATION)? You should! I think you should react on the song Harridan, if I need to pick one from that album. Gavin plays beyond belief.
Recently saw a documentary on Porcupine Tree and just days before the band was about to go into the studio to record their first "big" album (i.e. they had a budget and big label support) the band lead Steven Wilson fired the drummer. He had no replacement and thought it was all going to fall apart but the keyboardist said "I know this fellow I played with a couple of times, he's pretty good. Want me to give him a call?" It was Gavin Harrison. Can you imagine that you're desperate and the only drummer you can find is Gavin Harrison?
No shit huh? I was just contemplating what vetting process Steven went through to lock him in as a drummer, long term. Sometimes it's all who you know.
Gavin is not just a drummer, he is elite drummer. His virtuosity, feeling of the song, rhythm, and drums as an instrument above the chart. He is a sort of Van Gough of the drums art. His presence in any band says a lot of a band itself: PT, King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief, 05Ric - they all amazing bands. Drummers like GH are priceless.
An inspiration for this song was the story of two Wisconsin girls who apparently killed themselves in a suicide pact. Arielle Daniel, 17, and Heather Bates, 14, were struck by an Amtrak train on November 12, 2005 in what was ruled a suicide, but was possibly an accident. Daniel was a huge Porcupine Tree fan and created the band's MySpace page - it was reported that she was listening to Porcupine Tree on her iPod when she died. "She also became a part of that song," Wilson told us. "The idea was very disturbing to me, that there were young people that would seek escape through such brutal, This, like so many of Wilsons material, is a horrorstory tied to reality.

I'm always impressed that the band retains such rock-solid time in that outro section where Gavin is really playing around with the meter. 1st chuckle - "Mansplaining", 2nd chuckle - "7 minutes 55, that's a long one". Like many my age, I fell in love with the drums in the 1980s because of Neil Peart. I discovered Gavin Harrison a little more than a year ago and he has changed the way I listen to the instrument. Precision, musicality, timing, pocket, groove and restraint... those are now my measuring sticks. I heard Gavin say in an interview once that there will always be someone who can play faster. I can't remember his exact words but he was talking about serving the music. That is my favorite thing about Gavin Harrison, nothing ever seems out of place, it's never about him... I don't believe he even likes drum solos. It's always all about the song. For me, he creates a delightful tension in the music the keeps you comfortably on the edge of your seat. Does that make sense? The two biggest compliments I can pay him are 1) I never imagine anyone else playing his drum parts (although there are some good covers out there), and 2) he was apparently one of the aforementioned Neil Peart's favorite drummers.
Neil Pert wrote a long (and generous) forward to Gavins book "Rhythmic Illusions". He had a deep admiration for Gavins approach to the drums. He said something along the lines of "If I could play that way, that is the way I would play." Truly remarkable. Gavins approach and philosophy towards music could benefit any musician, no matter the instrument. As a side note, I'm going to meet him and watch him play two nights next weekend.. I'll be a kid in a candy store :)
@@meters_and_madness As usual, I know half of the story. I knew it was cool that Neil was a admirer but the whole story is about a thousand times cooler. I am not a musician, just a lover of the drums. Could I possibly get anything out of that book?
@@timhilton7254 As an admirer, but non-player of the drums, I couldn't say how much you would get out of the books. There is also a Book / DVD combo called "Rhythmic Designs" that you might appreciate. It is a breakdown and explanation of every song from his albums with 05ric, which contains some of the most creative, interesting, and musical drum parts I have ever heard.
Glad you stopped to point out the "Pocket". My number 1 requirement of a drummer that I play with is pocket and feel (add listening to that). Gavin's dynamics and groove are at the highest level. Plus chops galore and such clean attack makes everything he does a clinic and most importantly is done in service to the song. Love your reactions and break downs.

Gavin's awesome. So musical. I've seen video's and interviews where he explains his approach and how he always tries to find the right part for the song. His Drumeo session is cool for those who haven't seen it.
A lot of drummers just play the drums, but Gavin understands that each hit is part of a phrase which is part of a statement. Every combination of hits is saying something and never falls into redundancy, like good grammar.
I don't think you've covered Nicholas Barker on the channel, but I haven't double-checked. He's a legendary Metal drummer. He has drummed for Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Brujeria, and others. His most impressive work in my opinion is his drumming on the 2001 and 2003 albums from Dimmu Borgir, but there aren't many good drum cam videos of him (to my knowledge). His speed, precision and fills are incredible. Songs I suggest are "Indoctrination" by Dimmu Borgir", and "For the World to Dictate Our Death" by Dimmu Borgir.
Since you are also a fan of Gavin Harrison: There's a new video of the Porcupine Tree song "Harridan" on UA-cam. It's taken from the new live DVD. Take a look at it. 😊
I love the tone of the drums in this mix. Just the right amount of pop and bruh taht sequence hes doing at like 10:38 - dude is like a death metal drummer
Oh my g.. you find new levels of extravagant comedy... ;-) (but it was funny) =) Good video - the level of control in the first bars of drumming - wow!
He maxed out at the end with those off-time polyrhythms. And well he should max out with that type of exit from the world of experience into the world of perfect forms.
This album was my go-to during the "angsty emo high school phase" One of those times where you don't realize the intellect/maturity of Gavin's playing (or Wilson's songwriting) until quite a few years later.
Oh coarse Gavin’s brilliance in every song. If you do get a chance to see Steven Wilson even doing solo stuff. Go, the musicians he surrounds himself are second to none.
Albeit the incredible drumming by Gavin, please take a moment to appreciate the amazing song writing abilities by Steven Wilson. This song like many others by him is pure gold.
Mark the coffee guy must be from my neck of the woods since Community Coffee is roasted & packaged right up the road from me, here in Louisiana. If so, then...Bonjour, neighbor! Community Coffee is definitely the best, and I bring a bag with me every time I travel anywhere that it is not available.

This is the best I have ever heard from a drummer. The band itself was in rarified air with this song. Timing was incrediable. Execution was just totally brutal. The video was awesome as well, capturing the audience reactions. The ending with the special effects train steam sound was perfect.
Hi Andrew, I love listening to Gavin too and I'll add something to your description of his playing, he has swing. Proper, old fashioned swing, it doesn't matter what he's playing there's always swing in there. Ginger Baker would have approved.
Hey Andrew! I don't know if anyone suggested it yet, but you absolutley should check Troy Wright playing Animals as Leaders 'Physical Education'. You won't regret a single bit of it, I promise!
I think Gavin became the drummer he is, is because of Porcupine Tree challenges. In absentia proves it was a challenge for him to do so. He grew along with PT
"Is it overplaying or under-executing?" Andrew, that is honestly a profound and thought-provoking question. I'm going to keep it in mind for my own playing. But I don't think it pertains to Gavin Harrison; he seems capable of executing at such a high level that even his mistakes would be musical.
Great playing from Gavin as usual. Andrew, if you get chance there's a video of Mike Portnoy doing the drums to Constant Motion, I highly recommend checking it out.

Cradle of Filth... Man it has been some time since I thought of them.. barker was a thief of breath.
What an awesome song not usually my selection but I'm so glad I watched this the whole thing was beautiful thanks Andrew
Since you are also a fan of Gavin Harrison: There's a new video of the Porcupine Tree song "Harridan" on UA-cam. It's taken from the new live DVD. Take a look at it. 😊
I need to see them at their own gig. I’ve only ever seen the tree at a festival.
Something is wrong with the PT-video's audio....(otherwise amazing critique Andrew - subbed :)
Oh no! What is wrong with the audio!?
"Without further ado" must be part of a standard UA-cam script.
HAHA Brian!
Yup I stole that from some UA-cam guy for sure. #UA-camTick
@@AndrewRooneyDrums A few years ago, nothing, a few months now, everyone has stolen it.
I love the tone of the drums in this mix. Just the right amount of pop
and bruh taht sequence hes doing at like 10:38 - dude is like a death metal drummer
Gavin is too good.
New band for me! So pretty.
So glad you dug it!
Oh my g.. you find new levels of extravagant comedy... ;-) (but it was funny) =) Good video - the level of control in the first bars of drumming - wow!
He is a master Andreas :)
I hope you are well
He maxed out at the end with those off-time polyrhythms. And well he should max out with that type of exit from the world of experience into the world of perfect forms.
I WAITED THIS SINCE LONG TIMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
This album was my go-to during the "angsty emo high school phase" One of those times where you don't realize the intellect/maturity of Gavin's playing (or Wilson's songwriting) until quite a few years later.
Gavin is 1 of a kind. No way to match his vision of drumming.
Beautiful melodies ♥️🎶🎼🎵
I missed one on your last live, Larnell Lewis, another great one I think you should check out.
I've done a few vids on him Jeff!
My mistake guess I need to look at your history a bit. Thnx👍👍
Gavin learned his craft by being a BBC session drummer in his TEENS having to play/sight read just about every style of music.
This guy is unbelievable. He can seemingly do anything on drums. He's right up there with Peart and maybe better.
Gavin actually once told me I was a good drummer. I quit after that, figuring I had probably peaked.
HAHA
Check out Gavin Harrison playing AWB, “Pick Up The Pieces”, live at Zildjan 400.
" I don't want to pee in your pocket"... is that a common phrase in NZ? I've ever heard that
HAHA. Must be :)
Marco and Gavin both played for Steven and also Guthrie … maybe you should check more Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson.
Damn, what a great song.
Yes. He sent a heap of it.
Delicious!
i am originally from Ohio. was working out of HubCity Lafayette LA in the early 90’s and got addicted to the TradDarkRoast . I moved back to Ohio after the 1st Gulf War ended and tanked drilling in the GOM. Thanks to the interwebs , I don’t have to send my LA friends money to get my CC fix
Gavin is an absolute craftsman on the drums. Apparently Porcupine Tree are returning with a new album, fingers and toes crossed.....
It's due out in the next couple of weeks. They are also touring Europe and the US later this year.
Thanks Artem!!
10:10 Those flams...Let's hug them
How can a flam be that perfect?
Gavin Lord of the Drums ! 🤜🏻😉
I think Gavin became the drummer he is, is because of Porcupine Tree challenges. In absentia proves it was a challenge for him to do so. He grew along with PT
Not all bad ass drummers can be in a band likePorcupine Tree. That is my dream.
"Is it overplaying or under-executing?" Andrew, that is honestly a profound and thought-provoking question. I'm going to keep it in mind for my own playing. But I don't think it pertains to Gavin Harrison; he seems capable of executing at such a high level that even his mistakes would be musical.
Guys like Vinnie and Gavin prove the point! They can play anything 🤯
Great playing from Gavin as usual. Andrew, if you get chance there's a video of Mike Portnoy doing the drums to Constant Motion, I highly recommend checking it out.
God needed a symphonic metronome, and so created Gavin Harison.
Need more Gavin Harrison!
The Atomic Clock is synchronized by Gavin Harrison
Époustouflant....top level
🙌
The whole DVD is 😳
Gavin is the GOAT
Hard to argue.
Funny, the whole time that Dream Theater was looking for a replacement for Portnoy, I kept thinking, Dave DiCenso, Zonder, Jarzombek, or Harrison
Check out Gavin Harrison “Cymbal Song”. One song just from cymbals. He will blow you away again!
Have you seen Danny Carey ,with RUSH ? just posted ,what an awesome player.
Hi, there is something wrong with the sound of the track. Gets less louder and then back loud again, could you check this? Its too bad to not hear that song as it was recorded and I love your reaction videos
