Listening to him talk about the philosophy of drumming has changed how I approach the instrument. He is a purist through and through and I really appreciate that about him. I used to be super into gospel chops, but now I can barely stand them because they all sound identical to each other. No individuality. What I have really grown to appreciate is seeing a gospel chops guy play time in a different genre and use their chops in that situation. Much more musical and beautiful than just listening to people beat the drums to death. Gavins song "19 days" is one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard on the drums. In my mind that song is what sets Gavin above the crowd and shows his genius.
Gavin is so completely down to earth, and he is SUCH a good drummer - his porcupine tree stuff is just terrific, not just technically, but his parts are in total service to the song. He's the very best kind of musician, IMO.
This person is so sympathetic. I love how he's so calm and collected. He tosses out anecdotes and touches on negative sides ever so slightly but never with any regret or anger.
Interesting that Bill Bruford went through the same realization about drum clinics later in his career. After seeing the super-technical and super-fast players, he too realized "this is not what I do" and stopped doing clinics.
Truly a easy going logical man. His describing Chick Corea really grabbed my soul. Reverance to a master pianist closer. Also Gavin the professional very grounded. Thank you Mr.Harrison

Been drumming for almost 25 years...this was so very much what I needed when I found it. Amazing interview; his way with words are commensurate with his way with drums.
I’ve been blessed to see him in a relatively tiny venue with Pineapple Thief and months later, Porcupine Tree at Radio City just a week ago. I can honestly say that as unmusical as I am, he single-handedly inspired me to pick up sticks. He’s one the most thoughtfully gifted, brilliant musicians who elevates the music without overwhelming it. I’m obsessed with his sound, his style, his mindset. Before him, there was only Danny Carey for me. But the past 15 years has revolved around his sound. Absolute Savage skill and talent. True gem.
Saw him recently with The Pineapple Thief. They were on the first song and heard someone behind me saying to their friend ‘’he’s a really good drummer’’
I like Gavin's take on life as it's exactly mine. Life's too short to do things that don't make you happy and that you don't need to do; happiness is not about success but about living the moment, while you're doing what you enjoy and the feeling of contentment and fullfilment it gives you as a consequence. This man is a glorious drummer, a gentleman, a smart person and also very handsome. He's got the full package, amazing.
His comments about drum clinics are spot on! I’ve been to several and yes, a lot of impressive players were there. But I rarely learned anything that would improve my playing.
Music is about reflection~ your honesty is so rich and true. You've never stopped being a musician to become stage show! Bravo! God's speed and blessing with your Tinnitus... You deserve to have your hearing,, thank you for your great contribution to music and drumming!
Obviously he's a top-tier drummer, but he comes across as very insightful and kind. He had several opportunities to say something bad about people in the interview, but he was always respectful and diplomatic. After drumming for over 50 years myself, he was a goldmine of good music and inspiration when I finally came across his work.
Cheating the Polygraph is a masterpiece to a Big Band, Fusion Jazz and Prog music fan like me. Really exciting and the drummer is so on point. Thank you Gavin for it.
This guy is as much as a gentleman as an innovative drummer of our generation. I once reached out to him personally in terms of his drumming and his gear, and he took the time to reach back to me. Nothing but respect for him and his craft.
You must listen to Dear Alice, as he mantions here, of Chick Corea to understand why Steve Gadd is Gavin's hero. Incredibile performance by Steve Gadd... and you even understand where some inspiration of Gavin's drums come from.
What an interesting, down to earth, composed guy! I always enjoyed watching him perform even though I have no technical knowledge about drumming. Nice.
Really cool interview. Kind of makes me wonder how he would fit in the Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs circa 1976-78. They used a lot of country/polka rhythms, but there was also a lot of jazz fusion. I was always impressed by Rod Morgenstein's syncopation and odd time signatures(i.e. Country House Shuffle), but perhaps being a Brit, Gavin might have had a hard time being a Dixie Dreg.
Beautiful interview! I almost laugh when he said he feels nervous before a clinic o a drum festival...I mean you are Gavin Harrison! How could you be nervous?! (Ironically)
Because he's not a blazing fast / tech chops guy. That's what people think is amazing nowadays. Not a nice groove or a nice polyrhythm. No SPEED AND WOW... Chris Coleman is obviously an amazing drummer - but I get bored watching him after like 10 seconds.
if it's possible to convey to gavin: i had a terrible case of tinnitus a few years ago. i have a good friend who is a long-time practitioner of Chinese Traditional Medicine (herbs and acupuncture). i no longer have tinnitus. if gavin can find someone who is well-trained in TCM, he might want to give it a try.
I had a 26" Gretsch bass drum and it was hard to play (super sloppy head) but BOOOOMY as fuck. I really needed a LONGER beater to make it play to its potential. I should have sold it to Gavin.
1 minute in and I remember immediately why I like Gavin since a long time! Thank you for your honesty in this one! 1:00 but what if you're not good at being an actor? I think that has made my career quite difficult and in the end I decided to make music as a hobby instead.
Seriously that he never been forced to play in a simple 3 piece kit? Dude how is that a choice? I just cannot believe hahaha. Seriously, Gavin is so interesting on his toughts about music and drumming, he is really not just a player. He is a musical thinker and true artist.
I think Gavin would probably agree with you and admit that it's not about all people who play big sets. I've listened to a lot (all) of his interviews online and he really despises gimmicky drumming, which is what I think he meant. But he loves originality and musical drumming, which bozzio definitely is. I would put money on this... I am pretty confident that he would not say that about bozzio. I could be wrong, though.
for me the best rock drummer and his album 'Cheating The Polygraph' is a stunning big band re-interpretation of Porcupine Tree's music. So glad the band is back as i think Gavin's work with King Crimson, although superb, is not for me as i think the 3 drummer line-up is just a gimmick. Of course Buddy Rich remains 'The Governor'.
Agreed - I’ve been fortunate to see them on their last two tours. Absolutely spell binding. A couple of hours of amazingly intense and musical performances. I’ve made the comment elsewhere: If I could see them once a month I don’t think I’d ever get tired of hearing them.
I am not a drummer but I could listen to this guy talk all day long
True!
I used to watch and listen to this dude before I became a drummer
Listening to him talk about the philosophy of drumming has changed how I approach the instrument. He is a purist through and through and I really appreciate that about him. I used to be super into gospel chops, but now I can barely stand them because they all sound identical to each other. No individuality.

And play all day long Alex....
He and Steven Wilson have this quality of entertaining by just talking. I guess it's a Porcupine Tree thing.
One of the greatest drummer in the world, he’s amazing
Gavin is so completely down to earth, and he is SUCH a good drummer - his porcupine tree stuff is just terrific, not just technically, but his parts are in total service to the song. He's the very best kind of musician, IMO.
I've always felt thst Anesthetize is a song composed for a drummer :)
Can't wait to see PT on stage again after 11 years
Ticket already booked. Hope you enjoy them when you see them.
Does this guy even age? I just watched his performance at the David Letterman's show 10 years ago and he looks exactly the same
My hero
I get that to, its the drumming.
Gavin’s devotion to his craft is so inspiring! Listening to his thoughts is just as inspiring as listening to him drum
Yeah, totally agree.
the ultimate drummer
This person is so sympathetic. I love how he's so calm and collected. He tosses out anecdotes and touches on negative sides ever so slightly but never with any regret or anger.
Interesting that Bill Bruford went through the same realization about drum clinics later in his career. After seeing the super-technical and super-fast players, he too realized "this is not what I do" and stopped doing clinics.
Gavin is not just an amazing drummer and my all-time favourite, but he improves every song or piece he plays on exponentially.
Truly a easy going logical man. His describing Chick Corea really grabbed my soul. Reverance to a master pianist closer. Also Gavin the professional very grounded.
Thank you Mr.Harrison

he is absolutely incredible, also as a human being
I love this guy. Amazing drummer and human being.
Great to hear Gavin's comments on drum clinics - I think he is absolutely right.
talented , down to earth , decent guy... one of the best drummers ever..
Been drumming for almost 25 years...this was so very much what I needed when I found it. Amazing interview; his way with words are commensurate with his way with drums.
Such a mature musician.

I could sit and listen to Gavin all day
Saw him recently with The Pineapple Thief. They were on the first song and heard someone behind me saying to their friend ‘’he’s a really good drummer’’
The world needs more musicians like Gavin. I would have KILLED to see him play with Chick Corea.
I like Gavin's take on life as it's exactly mine.

What a great drummer Gavin is, technically perfect, so creative, always doing each hit in the right place and the right moment. I love him.
I can only play the radio. I still loved listening to him. He is quite articulate.
beautiful soul, very informative discussion. thanks for making it.
His comments about drum clinics are spot on! I’ve been to several and yes, a lot of impressive players were there. But I rarely learned anything that would improve my playing.

Man... what a class act. I'm glad I heard this interview.
Cheating the Polygraph is a masterpiece to a Big Band, Fusion Jazz and Prog music fan like me. Really exciting and the drummer is so on point. Thank you Gavin for it.
*the drumming
Thank you guys for a great questions! Gavin's interviews are as much of a treat as his playing is!
This guy is as much as a gentleman as an innovative drummer of our generation. I once reached out to him personally in terms of his drumming and his gear, and he took the time to reach back to me. Nothing but respect for him and his craft.
Quote Copy .."I am not a drummer but I could listen to this guy talk all day long" I agree , what a bright interesting guy ..excellent !
You must listen to Dear Alice, as he mantions here, of Chick Corea to understand why Steve Gadd is Gavin's hero. Incredibile performance by Steve Gadd... and you even understand where some inspiration of Gavin's drums come from.
That Latin syncopation from Chick always did it for me. Illusions...What a phenomenal song. Looking forward to seeing PT in 2022. Gavin is the best.
Great insight from a living master of the instrument.
What an interesting, down to earth, composed guy! I always enjoyed watching him perform even though I have no technical knowledge about drumming. Nice.

Absolutely spot on.
I once saw a drum clinic with Andy Newmark, he played groove to click. It was great. Thank you Gavin
Thank you for sharing your dads story♥️
Yes!! Steve Gadd 👍🏿
No, Jeff😂 But hey, it's a dilemma. It doesn't matter: they're just great!
Beautiful interview! I almost laugh when he said he feels nervous before a clinic o a drum festival...I mean you are Gavin Harrison! How could you be nervous?! (Ironically)

THE LEGEND
Niesamowity perkusista!
Amazing drummer. He would be an amazing clinician..so much to offer
Great understanding and deep person behind a wonderful artist.
What a brilliant man.
Gavins knowledge and love of music is infectious and inspiring. Amazing interview, could literally listen for hours.
if it's possible to convey to gavin: i had a terrible case of tinnitus a few years ago. i have a good friend who is a long-time practitioner of Chinese Traditional Medicine (herbs and acupuncture). i no longer have tinnitus. if gavin can find someone who is well-trained in TCM, he might want to give it a try.
Great interview with the maestro, really enjoyed listening to this
Gavin. You are such a great man and musician. All my respect to you. You are my hero!
If you haven't already, listen to "Chemical Reactions" - Antoine Fafard.
My very favorite drummer. And I learnt a lot from this video !
15:42 i guesss that's what happened with Pineapple Thief
Awesome! Gavin my favorite drummer and a shout out to Roger Federer, my favorite tennis player.
Me too!!!
Same here. Roger is globally revered for his humanity and professionalism always
They both are a class apart from their peers.
Harris Gavinson
Does he know he is what every drummer should be? true, hard worker and musical !!
100% agree
He is the man! just brilliant
THE BEST POUND FOR POUND DRUMMER IN THE WORLD!
Wisdom... Thanks for sharing
I agree with him when talking about playing in the afternoon against playing in the morning. The afternoon is the best time frame to play imho
I'm very much a morning person, but it takes me so long to warm up and stuff that when I record it's usually afternoon or even evening 😅
these very interesting topic.
I would kill to see Steve gadds reaction to playing onstage with Gavin.
Gavin is just on another level ☺️
Brilliant.
great perspective on his drumming career and what works for him, which you can incorporate into your routine.
I love this guy
I had a 26" Gretsch bass drum and it was hard to play (super sloppy head) but BOOOOMY as fuck. I really needed a LONGER beater to make it play to its potential. I should have sold it to Gavin.
imagine you have the chance to make an interview with gavin and the question you ask is: "no toms or no rides?"
one of my hero!
6:03 oh Gavin 🤣🤣🤣
And i could Listen to play bis drumming all the day long, he’s the one who can reach you by talking …..👍🤷♂️🥂
I would love to have a beer with Gavin
It makes me incredibly sad to hear gavin say he won't do another drum clinic
Some really good questions
Gavin and the guitar player Bill Steer of Carcass... NEVER age
Jeff is doing all the aging stuff.
Always inspiring!!
😎👍💗🇬🇧🥁🔥🎼💣🔊)) GAVIN!!!
How is this dude 58??? What a kind, thoughtful, funny dude
😅
Great questions

6:07 Is no one gonna mention he's also a comedic genius?
How about the dilemma of realizing you have the opportunity next year to tour with Porcupine Tree AND King Crimson XD
Seriously that he never been forced to play in a simple 3 piece kit?
Dude how is that a choice? I just cannot believe hahaha.
Seriously, Gavin is so interesting on his toughts about music and drumming, he is really not just a player.
He is a musical thinker and true artist.
gavin has a similar view to vinnie about drum clinics being a circus act nowadays. understandable!
GENIUSZ !!!
thanks!!
10000% relatable.

Terry Bozzio: 🤔

Question:
I am @ 10:00 ish!
Is he talking about having fun playing drums at some point?
Or is it just about no need for money or fame anymore?
13:04 Easy answer for Lars.
Drum God.
8:32
There are currently 2 alphas on the planet today: Floor Jansen and Gavin Harrison.
Maybe hes talking about Chris Coleman or drummers like that.
what do mean? like the super fast technical drummers?
