RE 7 is like... masterclass horror up until the Jack Baker fight. After that it just falls off so hard in my opinion.
I didn't like the mold very much, but the recurring run ins with the Bakers really help offset that for me.
After Jack they are all pretty much dead and then you just got the mold, and at that point all the intrigue is lost.
I am still grateful for this game, though. It showed Capcom could still do horror well, even if it did drop off a little at the end.

Resident evil 7 has the dumbest characters in the franchise.
The smallest infraction i can think of is Ethan going to a swamp in Louisiana wearing a business casual outfit.
The worst is him not calling the police after his wife sends him an address to find her, getting there and finding her stuff being burned, the deer monument, an empty van and still goes into a rundown house.
I could write an essay about the cop.
How Zoe did apparently jack (pun intended) in the three years since it started.
Or how Chris goes into the caves by himself and with a gas mask that doesn't do its job and doesn't call for backup when the soldiers start dying and a bomb is placed on his arm.
Or the Umbrella soldiers in the dlc who are out in the open by themselves.
Or how Joe Bakerman sees the umbrella soldier ripped out of his house and just leaves zoe on a couch right next to the water by herself.
Also.... The molded have the same problem that the main enemies in resident evil revelations do. It's a really scary look but is so overused that it just becomes boring.

People overexagerate just how terrifying RE 7 & RE 2 are, especially with the stalker enemies.
IMO RE hasn't really been able to make a good stalker enemy.
Both Mr X and jack baker only chase you for the last part of their locations, so even on a first playthrough and 100% playthrough, they're never really in the way. With Mr X you only need to finde one item that is really easy to find and that segment is over and jack bakers chases are always scripted and right before either completing the shadow puzzle that stops time while you do it that gives you acces to a room he can't get to or right before these boss fights.
Never really found them terrifying and more like an extra enemie to maneuver around.

Idk if this is the right place to leave a hot take but I have one for RE8. I think the middle half of RE8, is really bad (especially on replays). Stretching from the end of the Lady D boss fight to the start of the factory, which includes the whole of House Beneviento and all of Moreau's section. That whole part of the game is 90% completely on rails and really boring on repeat playthroughs. Sure House Beneviento is cool on a first playthrough but after that point it becomes tedium personified I'd argue the RE7 boat section is better than both House Beneviento and Moreau's sections. Maybe another hot take is that the factory is actually the best part of the game for me. Once you learn the layout of the factory it actually becomes fun to traverse and has a good flow to it.

I really don't like how similar to Evelyne they programmed Miranda. As in, both of them stalk you throughout the game with the endgame revelation that Evelyne is the grandma / Miranda is the old hag, at least Miranda disguised as Mia was a shocking one off moment (also huge for promotional footage) and finding the real Mia as Chris is an amazing set-piece but the old hag could, and should have been her own character like the Duke.

    1. RE6 isn't the mainline RE game that most suffers from an identity crisis, it's RE8. Village is pretty exciting your first time around, but I eventually realized it's just worse versions of all other RE games smashed into one.
    2. While RE7's enemies are grossly lack in variety, I don't think I've ever fought more frustrating grunt enemies in any mainline RE game than in Village. They move around way too much to compensate for Ethan's increased firepower, in addition to being bullet-sponges, with little-to-no hit reactions in a weak attempt to force the player to use the non-intuitive block ability.
    3. The bosses feel way too scripted and simply cycle through attack animations with little interruption from the player.
    4. Aside from RE7, this is my least favorite version of Chris. He looks way better than 7, but his ridiculously edge-lord attitude and bone-headed reasons for not talking to Ethan just for a forced sense of drama really hurt the character. I really can't stand modern Capcoms attempts to "humanize" the classic RE cast by making them more dour because of "trauma" (see Jill in Death Island and Leon in RE4R).
    5. I love Ethan Winters, he's so goofy and potentially the most aloof character I've ever had the pleasure of playing.
    6. Like RE7, way too many scripted story segments that hamper replayability.
I still love Village mostly because of Ethan and the silly ways it connects back to the larger RE lore, but it's pretty low on my ranking and one of the RE games that I least want to replay. Just like RE2R.

    • @slaviclad9705
      @slaviclad9705 Місяць тому

I disagree 100% about the identity thing, re 6 has so many crappy sections because it tries to be the biggest RE ever made and it just fail and the lycans are not even that bad, learn to fucking block, its incredible we've reach a point when even 6 considered better than village, i guess im a fake fan after all

    • @johnathonhand8570
      @johnathonhand8570 29 днів тому

@@slaviclad9705 That's why these are my "hot takes." I know most players think RE6 is a huge failure, and rest assured Capcom does too. I just happen to think it's underrated compared to the ridiculously horrible reputation it has. I still REALLY like RE8, but when I think back on all the mainline games I've played in the series I just can't find much about it that excels compared to other entries. RE6 has many weak elements, but it's also unparalleled in spectacle with novel combat mechanics! By comparison, Village plays the franchise hits in order to be "safe to the point of being unfocused."
But again, I definitely know I'm in the minority and these are just my opinions.
Also, I'll never get over my feelings about the blocking, it just feels bad. And it makes me ever more unreasonable angry that it's because of this mechanic I find horribly implemented that the enemies move around so darn much and have very little hit reaction! It's a negative feedback loop of personal frustration! Ahhhhhh!

My take is that I liked Ethan, he had a memorable but realistic design, and watching this average dude get his hands/legs ripped off and have to go through this heightned the horror. I felt a connection and liked when he did occasionally say something. I think he needed more of a personality in 7 but it was a good point to jump off to in 8. Imo the reason why most hate him is because 8 expanded on his personality in the worst way. It turned him whiny and boring. I think if 8 went a diff direction Ethan would have been seen way better

The argument that it’s “nOt A rEsIdEnT eViL gAmE” is so unbelievably stupid and as you said especially for a franchise such as this. I cannot believe real humans today are saying this. One can argue RE7 is more “Resident Evil” than RE4, RE5, and RE6. It has nearly all the core tenants of classic RE and survival horror.
    -emphasis on backtracking and exploration
-large interconnected maps that open up more as you progress
-a sense of relative freedom on what order to complete certain objectives.
-the ability to outright miss out on certain items, resources, and weapons
-moment to moment combat decisions weighing resources and health
-tight inventory management and decision making(butchered in 8)
-crafting decision making(also butchered in 8)
-puzzle solving(admittedly on the light side but that’s just me)
-you even have a choice on how you want to deal with Jack kinda like with Nemesis. You can take him head on to down him for a bit. You can run and loop him around geometry. Or can hide and wait for him to take his search elsewhere. Also I like that his garage boss fight can also play out in two ways with you taking the car or himself taking the car
The game’s biggest sin imo is the lack of enemy variety. We have the molded that came in 4 flavors and they’re a cool enemy but by the end they lose their luster. And then there are the bugs which are more annoying than anything. We needed more variation with molded imo as well as add some alligators or something. This is Louisiana! The DLC fixes this issue a bit with actually having gators and the Chris dlc have different molded types. “Fix” wasn’t the right word because base game is still an issue. Addresses? Idk.
Also, like all Resident Evils, this game does still have that RE cheese. There are plenty campy moments. People gotta stop pretending like the humor is completely gone in Resident Evil.

    • @ZelaumTheHunter

the huge elephant in the room is the aesthetics, re7 is so much outlier in aestetics that is so much deviation. Like not having the announcer, typewritter, satysfying inventory sounds, characters that would fit in the re franchise, not having first aid spray, the collor pallets of ammos types (pistols red, shotgun green, smt blue, rifle white and the list goes with each of the mark), not having any iconic weapon from the series like matilda, samurai edge, ithaca, hydra or broken butterfly, no healing sound effect, just a generic and "deep" menu only contributes to not that feeling. Its not only gameplay that defines a franchise, but also the aesthetics, plot and vibes, that even the not beloved re games like even umbrella corps got it better than re7. So thats a huge reason why many still say re7 is not resident evil. The same energy of bo6 zombies people been complaining, even the core gameplay being there what bothers the most is the aesthetics

    • @thatoneguy1232
      @thatoneguy1232 Місяць тому +3

@@ZelaumTheHunter once again I cannot believe real humans are still saying this today.
First there’s the aesthetic thing. What does this even mean? What about RE4? That game, while it does have its critics, is hailed as the greatest RE ever by many, if not most. And yet it’s a massive departure from the first three Resident Evil games from setting, tone, camera, gameplay, story, and enemies. The same would go for future Resident Evils.
What do you mean “characters that would fit the RE franchise”? That’s an absolute ridiculous thing to say especially for a franchise such as this one. What about any of the characters here makes them “not Resident Evil”? We had a guy come back from the dead with matrix powers. We had a girl throwing fireballs. Little girl with super senses. A guy that could mind control people with a parasite. The list goes on.
The first aid med is essentially the healing spray in a bottle
Ammo boxes are color coded. Handgun ammo is red, shotgun shells are green, etc.
what’s wrong with the plot again? A nefarious organization creates a bioweapon, turning people into horrible monsters and you need to find a way out. The biggest difference is with the protagonist not being a soldier or cop, but just a regular guy. And everything that occurs in the story is rooted in the fictional science of it. And while it is an isolated, 1. So is 4. And 2. That shouldn’t be an issue. It’s also not like it’s a completely separate world with many references and later Chris or “Redfield”(thank goodness they changed him for RE8) comes along. Is it the new characters? Well RE2 were new characters with references to the others. And Umbrella was loooooong gone since 4.
I feel like the change in perspective is the only thing that turns people off despite not being the first time the series has done so as well as the lack of a past playable character which leads to people trying to nitpick the smallest of things or outright make up reasons to not like it as a Resident Evil. And I’m not even saying you have to like it. But it’s weird to gatekeep what a “Resident Evil game” especially when it has more in common with the first 3 than the last 3 and many other games have taken greater departures.

RE7 definitely should not have been a hard reboot. It's so separate from the continuity in previous RE games, that a hard reboot wouldn't have made sense to start with RE7. Like you say, it would have functioned better as just a completely different game and IP had they gone that route. I think they made the best decision by gently leading old, jaded fans of survival horror back into RE with it, and by even getting new survival horror fans into it -- fans who may not have been around when Resident Evil left the last vestiges of true survival horror at the door.
RE7 is definitely rough in terms of replayability -- and it's mostly because of the beginning and end, funnily enough. The section in the guest house at the beginning feels like a long unskippable cutscene, where you're forced to hold up on the analog stick, and engage in two annoying Mia fights. Seriously, the last playthrough I did on Madhouse had me on my phone for the first ten minutes while Mia was slowly walking me through that basement. The ending boat section is a slog, with lots of forced slow walking, and I didn't like having my Ethan loadout stripped away for the Mia loadout (remote bombs aside).
I also don't think it's fair to compare the Evelyn fight to the G-5 Birkin fight, outside of how the fight works. Firstly, that G-5 fight is a carry-over from the original RE2 game, and sticking to those roots instead of changing the mechanics of the fight or even removing it entirely, was riskier. I'm sure Capcom could have made that fight more interesting, but meh, I didn't really mind it, and that leads into the second point: G-5 is not REALLY the game's final boss -- he's better characterized as a bonus boss, like a special cutscene for finishing both A and B scenarios. When you play as Claire in one run, and Leon in the other, you get two completely-unique boss battles (G-4 and Super Tyrant respectively). By the time I fought G-5 for the first time, I had gotten through the two campaigns, killed both G-4 and Super Tyrant, and felt like I had been sufficiently-challenged, overcame those challenges, and now was in for one last, silly hurrah by unloading on G-5.
Evelyn's fight, on the other hand, is not preceded by any unique boss. The last true boss before her is Mutated Jack back in the marshland. You have the whole third act with the sluggish boat section, a brief ramp-up with the gauntlet of enemies in the mines, and then after those two fat molded, you're given Evelyn as a boss battle where you just stand there and shoot. Those two fat Molded are considered bosses by some, but they're just minibosses that you've fought before.
