Why is Goku tan in GT?

- Dragon Ball GT made a lot of strange design choices but what is the reasoning for this one? Well join me today as we go over all the reasons for Goku's colour palette changing in GT. Hope you enjoy :)

Goku is tanned in GT due to living in UUB’s village so long without applying SPF

In universe, I always thought he got tan because he spent a lot of time training Uub and got a lot of sun exposure. It's implied that Goku spent a lot of time away from home during that period. I liked the tan look tbh. It's just a shame we didn't get to see him more as an adult. He looked really cool in his new gi.

@Don't Start i was born white and i am white. When i get exposed to the sun for a very lo'g period of time i stay tan for a long time.
Bronze skin tone makes him seem wilder. It's a tan from being in the sun. That's all I ever saw it as.

@@RexVergstrong Well, the Room changes temperature very frequently between like 50°C to -30°C, right? Maybe Goku was just awake during the more "hot" periods of time, maybe? I don't know.
It’s because in Japan having a tan is a symbol of youth. It’s a trope that kids with tans are always outside and playing. It’s a cliche of sorts.

If you look at a lot of elderly Japanese people they have a similar skin tone also goku has the tan as an adult at the beginning and end of gt

I feel the same way, I find it very refreshing & criminally underrated in my opinion.
@@ms.antithesis The Buu Arc was so detailed and filtered, it had atmosphere like the rest of Z.
@@TheMightyN sure, it had the same atmosphere as the of Z because it had the same pallete but the artstyle was ridged and kinda shit imo.
@Henry Tuttle just because I can't produce the highest tier animation, doesn't mean I can't critique animation. The fact still stands that the art quality has declined. Its not the animation imo, but toriyama's artstyle becoming a lot less dynamic
I actually really really like how Goku looks with tanner skin, he's a character who lives an out-doors-y lifestyle and spends a lot of time outside training so it makes sense that he'd have a darker completion than someone like Pan or Trunks, who live in a more urban environment.
It also adds a bit more variety to the show's character designs. For better or for worse Toriyama is definitely an artist who falls back on features that feel a bit templated or repetitive, and something as small as giving some characters different skin-tones helps to alleviate the "same face" effect a bit.

granted Toriyama during the original manga's run. was always on a time crunch to get chapters done so. makes sense he would cut corners.
Personally I liked the way Goku, and other characters, had a nice colored Tan. It made it look more distinct and helped distinguish the outfit colors more. Also, I kinda thought it help show the age of Saiyans, where Goku& Vegeta reach over their 30s..they get a nice aged Tan. Goku is the exception as he was "cursed" into being a kid. Plus, like other Super Saiyan transformations, their skin turn brighter, almost " pailer" with their SS glow.
Yeah it was never a deal breaker really but part of me still likes the original colours and I agree it does work well with depicting age😁

@@nomad155 Super's art looks like someone tried to boil Toriyama's style down to the most basic elements and it lost its soul as a consequence.
The artwork for Super Broly looks great though. The animators really knew what they were doing in that one. I really hope they keep whoever was responsible for that when Super inevitably comes back.
I always thought it was cool how GT’s art shows more similarities to Toriyama’s original colors and design. Great video as always!

I always thought Saiyans looked cooler with a tan, sometimes they made Vegeta a little more tan and the broly is also tanned. It makes the muscles pop and look better.

Thank you! With videos lately I don't really plan out much ahead anymore and I just make a video on whatever I'm feeling that week haha. So it allows me to be a lot more creative with topics :)

@@santiinx737 With fanart it is a little different as there are always new characters I want to draw but I don't have time for so I create a back catalog so to say.
But with art block for me personally, I always found that the reason typically was because I had done something I was comfortable with over and over again which lead to boredom and at the same time I had got too comfortable so I became anxious to try something new. So perhaps push yourself to try a new medium or subject, if you do cel-shading try watercolor, if you do full-body pieces try doing a portrait or vice-versa. Or perhaps even go on artstation and find some new artists to draw inspiration from. And finally, I find learning something new whether through youtube vids or a course always keeps me going!

Nice, always loved tan goku myself. gave me the impression that he was out training in the sun all day long. kinda wish we got to see more of that style in the anime.
Even better they put more effort in the designs in distinguishing goku apart.. when I was a kid I thought he gotten a tan over the years that's why he had a bronze skin tone.
It's really the same reason anyone's skintone changes, the sun. But in case that answer isn't satisfying I'll leave you with this. Baby Vegeta is taller and darker skinned than normal Vegeta.

Great to get some explanation on this! I was wondering, it's really hard (At least for me) to find character sheets from Z, the movies, and GT but I've seen quite a few on your videos, where do you get them? And in such good quality. I love looking at old character sheets.
Yeah they are a pain to find. Although I managed to get some from scans uploaded onto Twitter or sometimes I go on Pinterest which works out great because it shows similar images to something you may have found. I also just recently found a site called comic.dragonballcn.com which seems to have several of the daizenshuu's completely scanned however the quality is average. Hope that helps :)

I have thought of that since he was training with Uub who's obviously an islander from the more rural areas of Japan it would make sense that Goku gets a tan since he was training with him in most likely where Uub was from not just at Kami's Lookout.

Not exactly he flicked back and forth between several different colour palettes for Goku. Some had a more white/pinkish look while some went to a more brown. The reasoning for the inconsistency is most likely that it just came down to what paints he had available at the time

It reminds me of what they do in JJBA when some scenes change so does the color of their outfits and hair Giorno is the best example his suit is blue but appears pink and sometimes black (at the end) when the animators color shade it different..

@@TheChosenOnesTime Yes it is, all the characters have white skin. The only brown and black skins are Uub and Popo.
I remember watching GT and in one episode Pan had a flashback of her family at the beach and in that flashback Goku's skin looks lighter so I always assumed he just trained for a long time and got tanned because of that

TBH, While I found GT Goku to be jarring at first, it didn't take long before I found myself liking the idea of tan Saiyans, period.
I always figured as a kid: he trained in some island home lands of Uub for years and thus, got a tan. Pretty simple.

Not exactly, both in the manga and colour illustrations the palette isn't consistent and flicks between a white base tone and light brown/orange then back to the more brown tones in others

Yea the skin tone isnt consistent even in early dragon ball in the first chapter which was colord goku was a pale yellowish color and in a color chapter of the first tournament goku was noticable much darker a little darker tham his gt color in the next color chapter he was palish once again

If i remember correctly toriyama once did a live drawing of goku back in the 80's in a tv show, and the final product was a fantastic tan goku. This could mean, that originally goku was supposed to be tan (latino color) instead of light

I mean it’s pretty right, dude should have been tan from the beginning of DB as he has lived wildly, but to me it seems more like just an art color change, or to convey that even though Goku became a kid he still kept some features such as tan skin which he had from maybe years of living wildly and in multi role battles etc.

Uub's darkness rubbed off on him while they were training.

The pigments count of his adult body did stay 1:1 the same when he turned a child, so more pigments per inch, which results in a darker skin tone.

Goku has always had tan skin. He's been living with a disease that made his skin white that's all.
