- It's not uncommon for a mangaka to have little involvement with the anime adaptation of their work. However, how involved was series author Akira Toriyama when it came to Dragon Ball? Well, join me today as I present all the documented information on this subject, from the creation of Broly to the design of Gregory, in today's video!

I just imagine toriyama out of nowhere opening a two door studio with both hands in a very agressive but controlled manner.
Kids coming out if the theatre whistling Gohan's song is one of the cutest tidbits I've heard.
That's why the Z Movies are perennial iconic pieces of the franchise.
This and MistareFusion are the best DB related UA-cam channels imo. MistareFusion for the plot analysis and ForgottenRelics for the art and production related content. Both channels are super underrated but I'm so glad they exist.
I am sensing a collab between them, is it possible?
@@vinceamaro1382 we can dream
Totally agree.
Mistake fusion sucks his content is over Reliant on interviews and outside influence when making his videos, he doesn't purely review it as a manga he overloads it with memes and meta information as a criticism this encourages people to ignore written material and instead base their thoughts on memes and meta information.
@@chronic-joker It's not like he presents his opinions as the holy gospel on DB, and when he states historical fact he is extremely dedicated to accuracy. It's entertaining and well researched critique whether you agree with him or not. I disagree with plenty of what he says but that's the point, it's often an interesting new perspective. Also I did specify that this is my opinion.
I still love that Cooler design sheet, it's the best I've ever seen the character look.
You know I always wondered what if Toriyama himself Storyboarding or even supervised some episodes of Z
He didn't, although he drew a key frame when he made that visit to Toei to select the voice actors. Of course it was never actually used however he did get to see it painted which is cool.
@@forgottenrelics1197 is there a picture of it?
@@forgottenrelics1197 show us
@@forgottenrelics1197 where!?
@@forgottenrelics1197 Really? Which Key frame was it?
Picking Nozawa to voice Goku in the was one of the Best Decisions Toriyama made. Her voice embodies the characters l perfectly.
sounds like shit lmao
@@mechajay3358 it's so insane she's still voicing the character to this day, hope she doesn't push herself... she's already old now and she hasn't considered to retire, and it goes to show how dedicated she is...
@@mechajay3358 Not really, not a surprise every other top tier Goku voice actor of the world (Italy, USA) sounds and embodies the character way better.
Keeping the voice of Kid Goku up to his adult and intense days was a mistake, he sounds like a joke every time a fight happens.
@@mechajay3358 the strongest and most skilled martial artist in the universe sounds like an 80 year old woman. She was good as kid goku though lol
The voice is perfect
It’s cool that Akira Toriyama came up with designs of some characters for movies. Congrats on 20k!
Thank you so much 😀
@ForgottenRelics I hope you one day do a video on his involvement on the Super anime and maybe the manga. Many people don't know by now that he doesn't do as much as they think. It would be an interesting topic also.
Toriyama: "Lets do some good ol shippin with Lunch and Tien"
Also Toriyama: "Who is Lunch...?"
Have we even seen her in super? I've always liked her
They were able to bring back the Pilaf Gang in Super, but yet no mention of Lunch.
She was actually in a Christmas image during the Saiyan saga. I don't think he forgot about her during that time, I think he was joking
She just vanishes from time and space xD. I think that last time we saw her on the anime, she was drunk on a bar.
Nah she appeared in the end of Z and was going to appear in the manga within the scene where the people of earth are giving energy to the spirit bomb, but was replaced by android 17.
one of the main criticisms of dragon ball is one that content creators like plage of grips uses "Toriyama asked them to add it because he didn't think of it" it's a surface level criticism based on surface-level interviews research, in reality, Toriyama seemed to leave some parts of dragon ball to the anime intentionally which is why I love these videos. since they correct the misinformation content like his has on people, the amount of dragon ball haters who harass fans because of content like his is an issue in the community that encourages not properly reading the story and basing criticism on interviews like "cell wasn't planned" or "this was were dragon ball was meant to end" and then these people insult Toriyama personally for "lols" despite not actually having real criticism.
Yeah it's unfortunate how so many people will take one quote and extrapolate to the entire series.
Yeah, it’s like how Toriyama really liked the Bardock special, in part because it felt like something he wouldn’t write.
@@AlexanderDiviFilius Not sure if that was the reason he liked it.
@@jasonone8726 To paraphrase Toriyama, he liked it because it was a more tragic and darker story than he’d write.
It certainly contributed
@@AlexanderDiviFilius Ok, to be honest, I never understood that comment at all, he's written dark and tragic stuff before in DB, like Trunk's history
The king Vegeta thing is the most hilarious thing. Just a headshot of basically regular Vegeta with a goatee.
This is an impressively compact yet comprehensive video on Toriyama's involvement with the anime. 10/10.
It doesn't happen often where I'm actually stunned by how high quality a video is. Great work!
Going to miss his interviews comments and designs 😢 Rest in peace
The mere fact people hate on some of the movies, but especially GT without having seen anything but joke clips when Akira Toriyama was involved in making or at least approving character designs versus not really being that much more involved in Super is such a joke to actual fans as opposed to those who pretend to be deep in lol.
And how do you know people haven't seen it? Stop with the excuses. 😂
@@jasonone8726 By listening to ho badly they misinterpret the series, it's easy to infer they haven't seen it. Skimming through a series with a preconceived mindset and notion that it is a joke and it's bad is not the same as actually watching the series and trying to understand it with an open mind.
@ryugakishatu6372 Again, with the excuses. People just didn't like it.
R.I.P Heromi Suru 😔
It makes sense that Toriyama would want to take advantage of the animated format by adding minor bits of material to flesh out characters that do not advance the story in any significant way as space (and therefore time) in a manga is at a steeper premium than it is in the run time of an anime.
Readers might have been disappointed or annoyed if the only Dragonball content that they got in Shonen Jump that week involved Yamcha playing Baseball where it only took up a few minutes in the anime.
Congrats for 20k man! You deserve this and much more
Thanks mate!
@@forgottenrelics1197 Do you mind, if you can, making a video on his involvement on the Super anime, many fans think he writes everything, plus I'm not aware or not, if he disapproved of some things.
Hi hello congrats on your success 🙌
Ahh yes, quality dragon ball content
Dam you hella underrated
I really like how Toriyama was somewhat involved in the production of the anime and decision making. Plus I really never knew about him designing grand Kai but it was an interesting thing to learn regardless. Also congratulations on 20k subscribers 😁👍🏻
Congrats on the 20k subs! In my opinion, having both actors voice the fusions, instead of one or another or a third one, is genius!
Thanks for the video man, it was very interesting
Congrats on the 20 k!!! I remember much of Toriyama's involvement in the anime was covered in the Daizenshu guide books( I was lucky to get 4 of them.) Fantastic coverage! I'm glad to see creators involved with their adaptations. Tite Kubo would be another example!
Damn, 20k that's based! This is one of my favorite DB channels, good job!

“To the creation of Cricket”
Gregory: Am I a joke to you?
Congratulations for 20k
Glad you made this video, as a powerscaler of Dragonball...I get annoyed so greatly when I use Databooks or references such as the Dragonball afterlife and how it's a seperate World/Universe that transcends human world.
Daizenshuu 4 page 20 provides this info along with a 1998 western book also licensed by Shuiesha for Goku RPG databook implying the same, and Daizenshuu 7 1996 also implying this information.
Then we learn that the map exist because the anime staff requested it, and Toyotaru even includes it in the Super manga.
But dude sooooo many ignorant people ignore this, and I'm glad you did this video. So the public can be educated on Dragon Ball; even outside of powerscaling purposes...just for general knowledge. Good video (subbed)
I remember Toyotaro included it when depicting Universe 10 in the manga, but what chapter was it?
10:40 I thought Janemba was the ONE movie design that wasn't changed by Toriyama.
Once again an incredibly interesting video !
Surprised to see no involvement during the Frieza and Cell saga in the anime version really. Mainly the saiyan saga had the most involvement from Akira Toriyama.
Yeah pretty common for Mangakas to be less involved in animes
great video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
All he really did was confirm art styles and made Character design but Super Animation was Denied by him but the episodes already was made so he couldn’t change them back and he was mad at the company, Even the creator felt disrespected by the Anime
So off topic questions.....is there anyway you could explain the art process of the dragon ball legends cards or something around the lines of that? If anything i just wanna know what and how the card arts are rendered (probably all on digital which i don't like doing) and mainly the abstract black brush strokes that are usually in all the cards and how exactly there made too. I really wanna implement it in to my art but don't really understand what it is and how to do it. Anyways great video as always and congrats on the 20k!!!!
I really enjoy your videos lol, how much freedom do we have when asking questions? (Q&A)
Thanks and ask whatever haha, doesn't have to be anime related!
Toriyama also had all the filler, weather he sent designs or not, sent to him for him to approve or disapprove of and leave notes. He did this for all of ball and z and GT. No doubt he does this for super.
I wouldn't say super has filler at least not the super from beer us to giren since that was all anime first
@@pheunithpsychic-watertype9881 who on earth is bee rus and giren
@Pheunith: Psychic-Water Type The episodes in the non main arcs are filler. Clone Vegeta, Hit rematch, Pan flying, and those Gohan episodes.
when you thing about it, Toriyama seems to have a lot more work to do on top of his work with no breaks
Definitely, this man wrote and drew weekly manga's, for 16 years straight.
We can see why the man was always tired
A new banger yessir
Upopular opinion: I think Bardock's original proposed design looks way more original and interesting than the decision of making him just a "meaner" clone of Goku.
Disagreed, the original one looked like a typical wannabe gangster, the redesign makes him actually look like gokus father and more of a badass
Absolutely Mind blown.
6:30 those are the shamoians from the OG Broly movie
Never realised that haha
I've been watching naruto recently and I have this same question about that show. Especially about shippuden. I've read the Manga and there is a lot of filler but some stuff feels as if he had some say in it.
Subscribed just based on how thorough the research must have been.
Airport to HEAVEN!!!
Sounds like a JoJo part 6 before JoJo part 6
This channel is too underrated.. spreading it around facebook n reddit grps of dbz cud help you. Wishing you growth 👍
Ok now It makes a crap ton of sense why DBZ filler is so good ... R.I.P the legend 😢
I wish that most of designs would return back to canon.
What designs?
What's up with the new editing style ? Lol
Been laughing the whole way
Just subscribed 😎👍🏻👍🏻
Didn't know because toryima has social anxiety.
Doesn't surprise me. He's only ever done one promotional appearance, which was back in 2002. If you look up any Toriyama interviews, only one camera interview comes up, which was in 1983, before he even did DB lol
Sometimes I wonder if or how much he was involved at all. For such an important figure in Shonen manga who has influenced so many, little is really known of him and he almost doesn't really even remember anything he's done or who half the characters he's come up with are. I feel like there was a ghost team pushing him through the majority of his work. One example is how the androids who killed future Gohan were originally Dr. Gero and android 19, but his supervisor disliked their ugly looks and had Toriyama come up with 17 and 18.
i feel like if the android was some kind of fusion of 19 and 20, a bit taller, it wouldn't look that bad and would look kinda edgy and scary
To be fair, most manga artists are super private. Most of them are just nerds who like drawing. Even Oda is super private. It's really rare when an artists is super open, like Araki who makes Jojo.
if toriyama okays the episodes im calling it all canon.
Toriyama was the Supervisor for both animes
You should do an analysis on dragon ball kakumei artstyle
5:58 Well, that right there might explain why he never appeared much in the show then
King Vegeta? It's because he's dead.
7:06,uh...don't you mean antagonist?
10:25, Zangya...oh yeah.
wow did not know these ones it seems like the stuff that would have been filler don't feel too much like filler now.
So Toriyama did intended to make a relationship between Lunch and Tien... or sort of
Anyways, congrats for you 20k, sometimes I wonder why you don't have 100k subs yet, but hey, better 20k than nothing, keep it coming
Yep he didn't completely forget her like many fans think :) And thank you for the support!
@@forgottenrelics1197 Well, now we need her to return in the Granola arc!
@@forgottenrelics1197 It's after the Saiyan Arc is when he would forget get her. She up and vanished after that.
@@jasonone8726 What about DBS Superhero then?
I completely forgot that she showed no romantic interest in him in the manga.
I never knew the Saiyans where the ones who created the Saibamen,
thank you, akira. thank you 👍👍
Tengo que decir 2 cosas:
1) felicidades por tus 20k suscriptores y
2) guau... ¡¡todos los diseños de Toriyama "de capítulos de relleno del anime y películas"!! ¿verdad?
Si, salu2
Gracias por el apoyo!
does anyone know how u find the dragonball special with launch and that
I can imagine not much especially since he was more concerned about his model kits
I thought Toriyama designed Gogeta, huh. Either way congrats on 20k. Anyone can see you work hard
in hindsight it does seem to borrow from gotenks a lot. Looking at how unique he likes to make every character design, seems like he mightve done it different
So.. does that make the filler canon?
En el próximo vídeo podría hacer un vídeo sobre el animador Shingo Ishikawa
The fire eater is based on a cassowary not an ostrich.
Does Akira Toriyama do all the art on the Dbz guidebooks
It should be noted that toriyama was likely referring to Japanese fairy tales very specifically with regards to the art style. Think Japanese scroll art.
Please another one but this time about DBS
Hey
Before I watch the video I think he made gregory from dragon ball z?
Idk if you remember, but you once sad you didn’t know who was responsible for all the dbz promo artwork and I recently stumbled upon this. Junya furusawa is responsible for the promo artwork!
What about GT? There's a lot of Toriyama illustrations and character designs from Toriyama for GT. I know that the title says "Z" but you also showed the stuff from the original Dragon Ball so I was confused with GT missing.
He designed the main cast for GT, that's all I know.
Oh there definitely were, but I touched on the original series because it fits in with some of the points I would make about Z, like the one about the increase in his involvement for example. Also, there wasn't a whole lot to cover in general with the original series so I didn't see its inclusion as a problem. GT somewhat felt like an outlier in that regard so I left it out :)
@@forgottenrelics1197 Would be great if you make a separate video talking about Toriyama's participation in Gt and ofc the new movies and Super
@@forgottenrelics1197 Oh I see, great video man!
Toriyama is the goat
It's funny that people rip on so much of these non canon things that toriyama had pretty much the same level of involvement in as super which they turn around and ragefully insist is objectively canon. Honestly I don't think Akira toriyama himself actually cares about the canon or making it all make sense. The fans are the ones that make canon a really weird discussion to have around any series.
Thank Kami for Toriyama
Hiya
I don't get why US people change the names of so many characters and other japanese-related stuff, my guess is that it has something to do with some degree of racism.
yes and also bc it's funny
Isn't the colors of Vegeta when he appear a mistake and Toriyama call to the studio to let them know they messed up the colors for Vegeta and Nappa, that wouldn't be a contribution as well, if this was true, we never know if is exaggerated info or real facts XD.
Yes, that's correct.
It's understandable but sad that manga authors aren't really involved in anime. . .
Why?
@@jasonone8726 understandable 'cause they literally have no time and sad 'cause anime isn't 100% their vision
@@RandomVex I meant, why is it sad?
@@jasonone8726 because anime isn't 100% like the author intended
@@RandomVex But sometimes, the anime does it better, I can name a number of them, in the original series and Z.
How could cooler be real ? I’m saying this because he’s more powerful than freiza was in his final form yet he just appears out of nowhere
He only exists in the movie timeline.
Wait didn't Toriyama also design Gogeta for the Fusion Reborn movie though?
He did
Dude, all the jump cuts is hard to watch, fuck this shit.
:)
I would really appreciate it if someone could send me 1 million dollars so that I too could tell my own comic book (manga) stories. I need money. I need enough money to produce several books.
There are creators out there, that are very talented and yet, money is holding them back. I no longer want this restraint.
Work for it like everyone else
get a job
Great video bro! But I just want to mention that "race" is not a scientific way to say "ethnicity". This in 11:20 when you talk about Metallic hahaha.
Too many pictures
Wait so he designed cooler and his forth form??? If so this begs the question why he didn't use him in the show when knowing he had a huge fan base? But whatever the redesign of brolly and his approach to the character are not my fave at all. So honestly I don't care about the show the creator sucks and has no care of actually making his show good.
Because he wouldn't have fit in the main timeline, the Z movies and anime are two different alternate timelines. Also, Cooler didn't become popular, until much later on, when the movie was dubbed, back in the early 2000's, for the Western people to see, DB was long over by that point.
