Why Dragon Ball Gt's Art Was Consistent

  • One common praise point around Dragon Ball GT is the consistency of quality artwork throughout episodes and that isn't entirely wrong. But how did this come about? Well, one major difference was Toei Animations' own involvement, with supervisors like Takeo Ide, Tadayoshi Yamamuro, Akira Inagami, and Naoki Miyahara.
    Of course, there are still other studios at play, so join me today as we uncover the full answer and more in today's video!

Dragon Balls viewership was already on a downward spiral during the Buu saga from franchise fatigue. GT already had that going against it when it started. It was practically predestined to fail. So they didn't choose the number 64 from the beginning really. They had to jam all the planned arcs into much smaller packages to wrap it up.

    This is one of the reasons I really like GT. I prefer on-model artwork to superior animation. My imagination can already fill in some gaps... but when characters are off-model my experience is really compromised and its immersion breaking. One moment a character LOOKS like Goku, the next second he looks like Homer Simpson? That's a leap my imagination struggles with. Something about just being consistently on model changes a lot for Dragonball, I mean people don't want to admit it, but the broly movie did suffer from radical artstyle shifts at times where the characters barely looked like the sheets if we were really being honest. I wince whenever I see the early clip of base Goku with huge ears and a small chin or a super Saiyian Goku with a scrunched face and overly grainy outlines. Just being honest here.

    GT had more of Z's top tier animators working more frequently vs them being out of the line up/rotation due to other studios doing episodes. Their best animators weren't pulled away from the anime to do thirteen movies, TV specials, special DB projects, etc. like how it was during Z. The scheduling was probably better and each episode had the proper amount of staffing would be my guess.

      Both can have their place. It ultimately depends on what they're conveying with the animation and what aspects of the character design they keep consistent. Obviously you need characters to stretch and distort during certain frames or else they move like puppets. Then you have super cartoony cartoons where purposefully drawing a character off-model enhances the humor. That said, it'd also be weird if you drew SSJ3 with eyebrows for example, or completely change certain character features long enough for it to be noticeable.

      I prefer high quality artwork over good animation. As much as I like Z; it's hard rewatching those Studio Live and Last House episodes. It hurt my eyes looking at that poor art work. And besides those studios that provided great art work had decent to good animation. They just didn't have the characters always zipping all over our TV screen at hyper speed throwing melee punches and a endless rush of ki blasts.

    • @NIMPAK1
      @NIMPAK1 2 роки тому +2

      @@MrB-bg7qe I can see your point as well, especially for a series like Dragon Ball which has extremely specific character designs and if one thing's out of place it looks like a completely different character.
      That said, I do think that's also an aspect of good animation. Some scenes require more exaggeration, while others require more precision. Good animation is not just about fluidity or how many flashy things you can put on the screen, but about making the world and characters feel alive.

When he draws the face with the three quarter angle he rounds the shaded area of the nose at the bottom where the shading begins on the side and it makes it look more static and consistent and it emphasizes the multiple dimensions. He also adds a slightly curved line which seems to be indicating the nostril in the area sometimes. It's subtle but it makes the characters look more human without undermining the original design

    Back when I first started watching GT back in 2015 (remastered set I still own today lol) , I never noticed at the time how some episodes, character details/art looked different and/or better than before
    This is apparent with the ending of that one GT episode where Frieza and Cell come back, but the next episode they look different. And also how SSJ4 Goku looked either extremely polished or ok polished in some parts of the Omega fight
    That’s when years later, I found out about the different artists who worked on Dragon Ball Z and their episodes they worked on. This explains why many episodes of DBZ looked so different
    However with GT, I noticed the art style stayed the same most of the time with art only changing or being downgraded with slower paced episodes (certain Blackstar episodes), but it was still the same art
    My favorite thing about GT art was the Super 17 fight and certain parts of the Shadow Dragon fights! Why? The detail put into SSJ4 looked like it was “Fusion Reborn” levels of quality

It’s weird how the much more profitable productions based on a successful manga have rushed schedules and more obvious budgetary constraints. You’d think they’d double down on success and take more time and money to get it absolutely right so you have an incredible anime and manga

    GT is so underrated. If youre a fan of DB and you dont think the GT ending is one of the best endings to a show in history, then idk what to tell ya!
    Nah i hated half of the show but I feel its highs were high enough to at least even it out to above average. Maaaan unlike Super with is cheap hollow call backs, GT's calls were earned and felt real
    I literally cried when Goku and Krillin's last fight was reflected off Roshi's glasses. Thats a MASTERCLASS in visual storytelling unlike in Super where the peanut gallery has to explicitly tell us whats going on since, ya kno, we're so sTuPiD.
    Vegeta's last line to Pan was simple yet tear jerking. He just told her to take care of those his clothes is the most somberly painful way possible and flew off into the sunset (man ngl im tearing up right now). He knows he will never see his old friend again after what seems like an eternity of being side by side. Seeing their rivalry transcend time via Goku and Vegeta Jrs' fight was just *chefs kiss* perfection.
    Contrary to popular belief, its not the powerlevels or insane fights, or huge stakes that define DB. Its THE CHARACTERS and their relationships! GT perfectly got back to those Roots because Goku and Krillin IS Dragonball! Goku and Vegeta IS Dragonball! Piccolo, *King of Freakin Hell* IS Dragonball! Trunks being a bitch aint it but hell Goten being a player IS Dragonball! These 4 characters were the most integral to the series by a mile and seeing them all grow to where they are now is something special
    GT gave every character closure based on logical progression instead " just getting to point A and B on the Storyboard" . GT mightve started off rocky but goddamn did it stick the freakin landing!

    Isn't it obvious? Because Toei cared back then to give fans a quality product. Whether people agree with it or not about it being good, you can't deny they didn't try to make a cashgrab like with Super.
    The story and power ups were written in a way to give Dragon Ball a perfect closer:
    - SSJ4: Goku overcoming a powered up version of the form he killed his grandpa in.
    - Golden Oozaru: powered up version of Oozaru and given to Baby for the callback of the Saiyan Saga and let Goku redeem himself from his lost.
    - Addressing remaining issues about the Saiyans past and acknowledging the faults of the Saiyans. Goku absorbing the Revenge Death Ball may be stupid but at the same time it symbolizes Goku accepting all the grudge Baby has for the Saiyans.
    - Dragon Balls turn to enemies punishing the "heroes for mistreating them and Goku has to take responsability for his action by leaving with Shenron finishing his Heroes Journey.
    So it would make sense the art and animation quality would reflect that as well as the focus on adventure.

      Not exactly, as I go through in the video it's more so staff-related than anything with different supervisors stepping up and others like Ebisawa stepping away, which provided a more consistent look to episodes than both Z and Super, which equally fluctuate in quality between ep's.
      And how was GT not a cash grab lol, Toriyama had no interest in going on with Dragon Ball, but Toei wanted to continue the series. Right after GT, they tried to milk the Dr Slump franchise by producing a remake.

    • @M3rtyville
      @M3rtyville 2 роки тому

      @@forgottenrelics1197 If they wanted to milk Dragon Ball, they would have dragged out the fights pointlessly like they did in Z and Super.
      Interviews hint that they dropped ideas so the story flow won't be disturbed like Gohan getting ready for battle being an example.
      Dragon Ball needed a satisfying conclusion which Toriyama couldn' deliver. Toei took that role.
      Whether they wanted to "milk" Dr. Slump or not is a different story. To be honest that show didn't age too well mainly visually so a remake was appreciated.
      With Super we see non of that. We are told he cares but from interviews we see him just throw some notes up to intepretation as the ToP arc shows. It's written like actual filler.

    • @forgottenrelics1197
      @forgottenrelics1197  2 роки тому +3

      @@M3rtyville Dragging out fights has little bearing on determining whether or not the series was created for cash, the fact remains, is that the story was concluded in the manga and Toei wanted to continue on for the sake of keeping that timeslot and making money off merchandise. It's not like GT was greenlit by producers just because they wanted to "give the story a proper ending". It would be a pretty naive take on the animation industry to think so.
      And the interviews from Toriyama and Morishita more so hint that Toei didn't know where to take the story and was stuck for some time. Even so, I don't even hate GT and believe that the motives for creating it don't take away from the enjoyment of the story itself, but adopting a rose-tinted view that "back then they did it for passion, not money" but "Super is just a cash grab" isn't exactly accurate considering it always was about money.

    • @M3rtyville
      @M3rtyville 2 роки тому

      @@forgottenrelics1197 There would be no need for the term "cash grab" if it were to apply to everything like you said.
      Even if people make product with the goal to make money, you can tell when they put efford to give you something worth your payment.
      If we were to apply that to Nintendo, why is it that something like Mario Galaxy is seen as a passion product but Mario All-Stars remake as a cashgrab?
      Reselling an old game for much cheaper with 4 games in it, free soundtrack and artbook with some information about the game in it.
      Would Mario Galaxy be considered the cashgrab for being more than twice as expensive at the time? Or a rerelease of an old game from home consoles nobody owns?
      The answer isn't simple because the information I left out is that these games are already available for cheaper online (back then) when you buy them individually. You only get a handful of soundtracks and the "artbook" has hardly anything in it. Not to mention it was a 25th anniversary release.
      On the contrary you have a new game taking advantage of Nintendo's motion controls, has unique gravity mechanics to solve plattform related puzzles, takes the franchise to new highs and has lots to explore. Tho you can call it a cashgrab in a sense when arguing that unlocking a new character at the end of the game and letting you recollect all stars again can be considered a Cashgrab in itself.
      The difference is that playing a game back then like Galaxy has given you worth your money and "rehashing" content like that is hardly a factor at the end.
      Don't bother even bringing up "Rose-Tinted view" claim, everyone knows Toei rushed Super's production and Toriyama not even being as involved as they made out to be.
      Not only Super, even Kai was hardly a visual improvement for a normal person to identify the difference and the intro serving as false advertisement of the animation quality people can expect.
      Comparing that to the Dr. Slump remake is honestly laughable. Whether it is a "cashgrab" or not.

    • @forgottenrelics1197
      @forgottenrelics1197  2 роки тому +4

      @@M3rtyville Oh Toei's producers 100% rushed Super's pre-production to fill Kai's timeslot, my point is simply that the reason why GT's art was consistent, wasn't because Gt's producers "cared more about the franchise", it was to do with with the animation supervisors that took over or left, as well as having more time which I again mentioned in the video.
      The reason I mentioned rose-tinted or cash grab is it comes off as if you're making out that Toei's producers in GT, had a different motive to continuing the series than Super's and that somehow brought about "better quality" when again it was to do with the actual animation staff layout. My bad if I caused confusion.

    Maybe a bit out of subject (sorry for my english, I'm french speaker). A lot of people seems to not like gt a like super, for me both have their good and bad. A friend had to insist.. a lot.. for me to watch db super.. because of the visual being soooo lazy.. all this cmputer drawing with lines that all have the same thickness, very basic style without life and so far from gt and even from dbz or db. Andabsolutely no imagination in the visual designs, take goku black.. and his ssj rosé, ssj blue, hit's dick head, broly in girl, the strongest of all (forgot the name, bold from the team of topo) should have a unique design but no.. the simplest thing possible, bold guy with the ears of freezer and buu, big muscles and oh a bit originality in the eyes shape.. (and the character has absolutly no deepness, he is empty, no charisma, nothing..) beerus is a skiny cat (that is totally invicible btw).
    Db gt: look at baby, baby vegeta, 'love it !! And then in ape, wait, ssj ape ! Oh and ssj 4, look at this design ! Even the first real bad guy in turquoise with a strange head has an original design that is cool ! And all the dragons in the last arc..
    I remeber a time where most of people liked dbz until buu arc, Look at this stupid 3rd ssj transformation with long hair, horrible.. (was so happy to see the 4th) but at least there was an idea, originality, something changing ! Ssj blue.. just the name tells everything.. and "rosé".. pink ! Say it ! And where is ssj green ? The story was a bit, sometimes, interesting.. at least.. oh and I forgot : golden freezer.. aren't you tired of color swap.. ?? Oh and bringing back broly.. super fan service and the design is crap, dbz broly is way better, not fan of the green hair bulky broly but normal, ssj turquoise-purple and the broly in normal ssj in the second broly movie are 3 beauriful broly designs.
    Where are the freezer-cell-buu bad guys type in dbs ? Still waiting a cool bad guy in dbs..

      The majority of Super's animation was hand-drawn as is standard in the industry. An episode still requires thousands of drawings.
      -www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/35541
      It's the compositing and colouring that's finished on computer. And the quality of the linework would vary between episodes. Suichi Iseki's ep 16 is great.
      With characters, even though I love kid buu he had no deepness either, he literally was a walking power level that yelled and blew planets up. Cell likewise once he reached his final form was empty, all he wanted was to be the strongest, that's it.

    I had commented on your "What did Toriyama think about DBGT" video that one of GTs' attributes that I like and thought it did better than the other Dragonball series was it's consistent high quality on model artwork. I kinda figured that with series being shorter and having more of top tier animators who drawn for the original 13 Z movies drawing for the anime was the biggest difference. And since GT didn't have a bunch of movies like Z those top tier animators were able to work strictly on the anime and weren't pulled away to do special assignments (TV specials, movies, promo stuff, etc.) I was so blown away that a DB anime series was drawn so well and consistantly that it made up for things I dislike about the show: subpar fighting choreography, repetitive use of signature attacks and the awkward poses when they fire them, Pan, execution of the story line, etc.

It’s the movement,art style,colors,story boarding,backgrounds and timing of the movement being timed right. Animation isn’t “only movement” . That’s a lie totally not mark and animeajay came up with to help super fanboys defend super. It’s annoying. If you’re only talking about the movement then say movement,don’t say animation.
      Animation is the fusion of art style,movements and several other things. It’s disrespectful to downplay animation to just movement. If goku has green skin we’d call it an ANIMATION error,even though it’s irrelevant to movement,but it’s ducking animation. No hte to the uploader but he’s wrong. Animation is more then just movement. Good animation is defined by looking good?not movement equivalent to keys jingling. It’s about how it looks not how much movement you have.
