I can’t even draw a straight line across a ruled sheet of 8x11 paper so this would never work for me. It is fascinating to watch someone with skills you don’t possess. Such a great appreciation of you sharing what you do with us.
Talent, intelligence and perseverance, and WOW, not so easy I think. Loved watching you, also loved perceiving how much you enjoyed it. Meg… fabulous editing. Blessings
Ben, I've said it before and will say it again, gladly: You never cease to impress me with what you can do and what you know. From a disabled, single-mom, old lady in Canada who has never lived on a homestead and knows very little about them (aside from what UA-cam channels have taught me, lol) I cannot imagine doing what you do without a family such as yours. You, Meg and the boys have that go-get-em attitude, are so smart, healthy, resource-friendly, faith-based and family-oriented. When I realized what this video was about - cutting boards from a log - I thought "hmmm, maybe not for me". But man, this was so amazing and satisfying to watch, lol. I could go back very easily and watch it again (and likely will). Good on ya, young man, for not only trying to make do with what you have, but figuring it out, doing it well and taking that knowledge and sharing it with others. This is a prime example of why The Hollar Homestead is one of my top 5 fave channels here on the UA-cams. Meg, you are doing an amazing job teaching those boys and taking such great care of your family. Thank you SO very much for taking so much time to put together these videos for us. I know it is a lot of work and you do it masterfully. Not only is the content fun and interesting to watch, you do such an amazing job of putting them together. xo Heather🇨🇦
Kids. You were one of the first utube channels I watched. I’ve followed you since the beginning. I changed my name on you tube a week or so ago. I love to see you posting more. Your channel has so much potential ❤️
".....and then rinse and repeat." Love it! Awesome job Ben! Thank u for showing step by step and in simplicity. Seeing it done can make learning so much easier! That's for anything really. Thanks again. God bless.
You guys are one of my top homestead channels. You truly are just inspirational. Currently my homestead is small, but someday I hope to quit my job and homestead full time!
Many years (MANY) ago, as a little girl I used to make mud pies with the saw dust instead of dirt. My mom didn't like mud everywhere and my dad built boats. I had an endless supply.
Ben, I can see your sense of order. I appreciate the hard work you two are putting in devolving content for us. Thank you, love how you work together and your children are growing up free and learning great skills. Meg thanks for your editing and hard work to run this Homestead 🌾🍂🍄🌻🧡💫🌍🌼🍁🌟🦃🌱
Ben, you are such a hard worker. Thank goodness it's not necessary now for you to spend so much of your time on the house. Now you will be able to spend more time on new projects on the land and in your shop. You're amazing!
It's a beautiful thing to see how you cut your own boards. I'd add the shavings to my compost pile. I do mine with total soil contact so it breaks down faster, plus that way I can add large piles of veg matter, including trimmings from shrubs, then too, a big load of fall leaves, & when needed & can easily turn it with a garden fork, getting some soil into it, at any time, & also add torn up cardboard, non glossy printed junk mail & newspapers in layers with food scraps, & any green materials, ideally before a big rain, or water it by hand regularly.
Great video! My husband has been working on building a woodmizer. With a house remodel underway, expansion of our garden, and future homestead plans, being able to mill our own lumber is a game-changer.
Great video Ben but I have to say looking back at some of the first videos that I seen of you guys Ben you have found your little bit of heaven on earth why I say that your facial expressions are so much more happy looking then they were in the beginning of your videos way back when. Keep up the good work. As always stay safe stay strong stay healthy God bless and enjoy life and hold that little cutie for me 🌻✌💖💪👨🍳🎅🚌👍
Thank you chef! I have let go of a lot of anger I was holding onto in the few years since I quit my job. And that’s exactly how I feel… like I found my little piece of heaven!
Chainsaws are NO JOKE. You are very skilled! I absolutely love your hand crafted garden beds!!! I Bought my husband a Husqvarna at a yard sale. Yikes, chain went flying off and nearly decapitated him. Tree branch took the hit and saved his life. I now have chainsaw PTSD.
If you put those blue tarps underneath where you are sawing, you don't have to rake up the shavings. You can just pull the tarp to where you want the shavings. Only then do you jave to shovel or water. If you are putting the shavings on walkways, you can even just drop the shavings as you pull the tarp.
I literally told my wife I saw some Russian guy cut lumber like this once, before we started the video...lol. His wood skill are on point!!! We're saving for a Norwood right now. Love the video guys!
I don’t know anything about using a chainsaw but my other half knows lots having had chainsaws for close on 70 years. He was most impressed with your chainsaw skill Ben. Another great video. 💕💕🌻🌻
Put the compost as walk ways , or in muddy areas to soak up water , also keep a pile as mulch for around plants ..!! You can mulch beds over winter , it will break down and feed the soil
You are truly one amazing dude! Your family is blessed to have you. We all out here watching are blessed you share in this format. You rock! This is a awesome to this lady here...wishing I had the strength, tools and of course LOGS! LOL
i use my old vertical band saw then i made a rigid frame for it to go horizontal... a few angle iron lengths, box sections... welded up to be a stand and the sliders i used an old plastic chopping board... works great...
I had this video pop up in my recommended (even though I've seen it before). When I see you talking about the saw dust, it reminds me of Al Lumnah. I believe he referred to sawdust as "man glitter". Amazing to look back at some of these earlier videos on the property and how far everything (and everyone!) has come. With love and respect, Heather🇨🇦
Wow....this is totally amazing!! You have talent for sure. You should be very proud of yourself. Thanks for sharing this. Very neat to watch. You are a hard worker for sure. Love your beautiful family! Greetings from Wisconsin. Karen 😊
Ben, you make beautiful items with the wood you cut from the trees you harvested on your property. Love the shelves you made for Meg. You're a very talented person!!!
Ben, your content is now climbing to another level. Bravo. I've always had a feeling it would probably happen once life started to settle down some. Been worth the significant wait and looking forward to more of this. The stuff where you can't just run down to the hardware store and throw money at something, this is how to get the most from the resources around you, A lot, no, wait, too many, channels don't or can't go there. There's no right or wrong to stuff like this, just sharing what you found works with others. Be well.
You could also use the shavings in garden beds as mulch or bedding for the chickens or have the pigs and pigs turn it into the soil. Just a thought. That's cool though that you're able to make lounger with it!
I just knew when watching the times u were cutting ur own lumber that u might have learned it from the Advoco guy. I definitely want to compliment u on how good ur skills r for cutting this way, I'm certainly impressed, very good, way to go. I have a lot of respect for ur skills and all that u do. I'm surprised u don't have way more subscribers.
The sawdust can be used for mulch around your plants next spring, summer and fall to keep the weeds down. It will break down by the following year enough to make awesome fertile soil.
Hiiiiiiii….from Ohio…do you intend to make boards to cover your barn or build on and maybe make a large food storage room with freezers, generator and extra canning supplies…a ventless wall heater works well for maintaining the room just above freezing…I store my dry goods in Lowe’s food grade buckets and I throw a few bay leaves in around the items to keep creepies out….like meal bugs….just a thought…
Thank w for the inspiration. I’ve got a ton of logs and have been telling myself I needed a sawmill to do the work. Now I know I can just get this done with what I have and save a ton of money. Appreciate it man! Great video.
Ben, thank you for the shout out! I noticed people writing comments about you and this video today. Great job with milling those boards.
Thanks for posting here. It helped me find you to subscribe!
Thanks for posting!!! Have to give your channel a look!!!
I actually saw a few of your videos and was thinking Ben reminded me of you 👍 Now I'm going to subscribe 🙂
Just subbed!!!
Oh my gosh! This warms my heart! You and Ben are awesome at wood milling!
I bet your yard smells amazing. I love fresh cut wood. Great choice of music, Meg.
Great job Ben and you are making a beautiful homestead thanks for sharing God Bless
As a 67 year old woman, I will NEVER have need of this skill, but it sure was fun to watch you, Ben!
I can’t even draw a straight line across a ruled sheet of 8x11 paper so this would never work for me. It is fascinating to watch someone with skills you don’t possess. Such a great appreciation of you sharing what you do with us.

You are absolutely correct young lady.

Those boards look so nice around the garden beds! Hope Jack is doing well with his new ducks!
Ben always keep safe ana healthy.....LOVE your family and homestead....
Love seeing the videos explaining how to do specific, important homesteading skills. Keep it up, y'all!
I use a local mills sawdust for in between our garden beds makes a great soft walkway and suppresses weeds just top up every year or so 👌
Thats cool how you make the boards and actually keep them straight.. I enjoyed it.
Great job piecing that together,Meg,
You guys are one of my top homestead channels. You truly are just inspirational. Currently my homestead is small, but someday I hope to quit my job and homestead full time!
don't wait too long, then you may have trouble bending over. start small. grow gradually !
Many years (MANY) ago, as a little girl I used to make mud pies with the saw dust instead of dirt. My mom didn't like mud everywhere and my dad built boats. I had an endless supply.
Great memories you made!
Wow...impressive. Thanks for sharing.
Ben that is God given talent. Not many could do that. God bless.

FREE lumber !!!! Amazing !!! Thanks for sharing this !!! AND bonus with the sawdust to use for other projects.
Wow what a great technique to making your garden beds! Awesome!👍💖👍
My PA Dutch grandfather-farmer would be proud of you👍🏼
Everything I ever learned to do was by hand! I’m prepared! You will be too!👍🏼
In the end you have a bonus product . Use the sawdust as a mulch or animal bedding. I love your skills .
Great Job!

Ben, the capable honesteaders. Always a pleasure. And shoutout to Megfor her great editing skills!
Ben, you should look into getting an alaskan chainsaw mill they are relatively cheap to buy and would help you make a little more consistent lumber.
Very cool project 👍 thanks for sharing!!!

Interesting 🧐. You’re so clever. Enjoyed that 👏👏👏
You should use the round ends and make servers or platers for Meg!
Or make a lazy Susan out of it!
You are amazingly talented! Blessings 🙏🏻💕
what a joy 3 videos this week:)
You did absolutely wonderful. Those slabs of wood would also make beautiful furniture.
This is very educational to me, never realized how much math goes into cutting wood! But still in aww of you making the “chicken plucker”
I don’t know anything about using a chainsaw but my other half knows lots having had chainsaws for close on 70 years. He was most impressed with your chainsaw skill Ben. Another great video. 💕💕🌻🌻

This is almost the same way I do it to make wood for my beds. Great job.
Aadvoko has awesome project’s love you all keep videoing
You could trim the live edges off and have lumber to build more stuff. Better barn for cows, well done Ben! God bless

Another satisfying video. ♻️
A ripper chain is a great help for cutting lumber with a chainsaw. Thought I'd share...
I'm a 62 year old grandma and I want to mill some lumber 🤣🤣
Go Becky!
A good thing about cutting timber that way is that you are developing a skill for doing it.
Thank you for this video! Awesome job
